Leeds injury news: Season over for 10-goal gem after "significant" injury

With every game vital in Leeds United's push for automatic promotion from the Championship, Whites boss Daniel Farke will consider himself quite fortunate on the injury front to this point, but the issues at Thorp Arch are quietly starting to mount up.

Some of Leeds' key players doubts for run-in

As the race for promotion reaches a fever-pitch, Leeds now look like they will be without a couple of their important players. Pascal Struijk and Georginio Rutter are the most high profile absentees at the moment with both players suffering separate groin issues.

The Whites could face plenty of competition to secure his signature in the summer.

There is also some concern over the fitness of star player Crysencio Summerville. The Whites' fifteen-goal winger sustained a knock during his strong performance in Leeds' victory over Millwall earlier this month. Speaking on the injury, Farke conceded that: "we have to wait a little bit", too see if Summerville is fit however, the German hopes it's "just a few days [out] and then he's back on the pitch".

Joining Summerville in the doubts column for Leeds' next game is Archie Gray. The 18-year-old was thought to have sustained an ankle injury however, his appearance for England's Under 21s during the international break suggests that the midfielder should be available for Leeds' next outing.

Archie Gray

The only long-term injury to Leeds' first team is Stuart Dallas, who is still said to be some way off a full recovery. The Northern Ireland international is coming up to the two-year anniversary of his broken femur against Manchester City back in 2022.

Whilst Leeds have few injury issues among their starting eleven, one of their most exciting young players looks set to spend the rest of the season on the sidelines.

Leeds youngster out for a number of months

As first reported by MOT Leeds News, Dr Rajpal Brar has given his verdict on the injury to Leeds youngster Marley Wilson. Speaking to the outlet, Dr Brar conceded: “Wilson unfortunately has suffered a significant back injury that will keep him out of action for a while."

The sports scientist and physical therapy specialist went on to say: “Considering Wilson’s age, my educated guess based on prevalence would be a stress fracture in the back which is relatively common in younger footballers. Highly unlikely he’s back in full training let alone available for selection before the end of the season.

Wilson suffered the injury on the 12th March with the Leeds Academy account on X backing up Dr Brar's assessment that the player will be out of action for the foreseeable future.

The forward has scored ten times for Leeds Under 18s this season including seven goals in the Under 18 Premier League. Wilson is of the Whites' most highly rated youth prospects, with the 18-year-old scoring two hat-tricks this season in victories over Derby and Everton's youth sides.

With Wilson approaching a crucial moment in his development as a player, suffering a set back of this nature will not be ideal for the 18-year-old. Despite this, his success at youth level so far means that this injury is unlikely to throw Wilson's career too far off course.

Levy set for Tottenham bidding war as marquee defender wanted for Ange

Tottenham could be set for a bidding war to sign one marquee defender for Ange Postecoglou this summer.

Spurs keen on signing another centre-back

As chairman Daniel Levy watches on with intent to see if Spurs can indeed seal qualification for the Champions League next season, the club chief and technical director Johan Lange and chief football officer Scott Munn are also working away on summer targets in the background.

The Lilywhites have been regularly linked with a new forward signing this summer. Wolves star Pedro Neto and Barcelona's Raphinha are rated highly at Spurs, according to recent reports, while there is also a belief that Postecoglou wants to add another defender to his ranks.

Spurs put pen to paper on a deal for Romania international Radu Dragusin in a £25 million deal from Genoa in the January window, gifting Postecoglou a much-needed centre-back alternative to Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero following Eric Dier's departure to Bayern Munich.

Of the names mentioned, Napoli defender Leo Ostigard, Borussia Monchengladbach ace Ko Itakura and Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly are among the centre-backs who are apparently attracting interest from N17.

Another defender who looks set to be a hot topic later in the year is Everton starlet Jarrad Branthwaite. The 21-year-old is on the radar of Real Madrid and Man United, as well as Spurs, amid his brilliant campaign at Goodison Park where he has shone as one of the standouts under Sean Dyche.

Branthwaite is attracting real attention from Tottenham, with rumours surfacing just last week that United and the north Londoners are making the "most concerted" effort to sign the Englishman pre-summer (Daily Mail).

Tottenham set for bidding war to sign Branthwaite

Sports Broadcaster Ben Jacobs, speaking to GiveMeSport, has shared his own update on their interest in Branthwaite. He believes Tottenham will be in a bidding war to sign Branthwaite this summer, despite reports he could cost as much as £75 million to prise away from Merseyside.

Jarrad Branthwaite for Everton.

"I think that there is going to be a bidding war, in many ways, during the summer. I think Tottenham will be there, and we know that Real Madrid have looked in the past as well," said Jacobs.

"It is true that bringing in at least one young centre-back is on Manchester United's positional radar. Homegrown players are also a key focus, so Branthwaite ticks a lot of boxes, especially with him being a left-sided centre-back."

Branthwaite has started 22 league games under Dyche as a mainstay of the Toffees eleven, with former Man United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy also calling him a "very complete" player with "speed".

“He is a great talent," said van Nistelrooy.

"The boy is 20, but he has a future. He is good on the ball, can play on the left or the right of centre-back because he is two-footed. He has height and speed, so he is very complete.”

Aston Villa may have already signed a bigger talent than Philogene-Bidace

Aston Villa sold Jaden Philogene-Bidace last September for just £5m to Hull City after making only six first team appearances for the club.

Was Unai Emery acting too hastily by moving him on for such a low transfer fee? That seems to be the case, especially considering his impressive start to life at Hull.

Jaden Philogene-Bidace's season by numbers

The 22-year-old has certainly showcased his talents in the Championship since arriving last summer, already registering 12 goal contributions in the second tier – seven goals and five assists – but he saved his best for the clash against Rotherham.

Hull winger Jaden Philogene.

The youngster looked like he had scored a stunning rabona effort to equalise, but the goal was cruelly given as an own goal, yet there was no doubting the incredible skill to pull it off in the first place.

If credited, it would be worthy of the Puskas award, yet the Englishman will have to be satisfied with seeing his club win the clash 2-1 instead.

The winger was obviously deemed surplus to requirements at Villa, hence why Emery moved him on, but has the Spaniard signed a player recently who could be an even bigger talent than Philogene?

Morgan Rogers could be better than Philogene-Bidace

Emery shelled out £16m in order to lure Morgan Rogers from Middlesbrough during the January transfer window, and it could soon turn out to be a wonderful bargain.

The 21-year-old was previously lauded by Michael Appleton – his former boss at Lincoln City – as being “outstanding” and he has gone from strength to strength over the previous 12 months.

Indeed, when compared to his positional peers, Rogers currently ranks in the top 3% for shot-creating actions (4.28), successful take-ons (2.1) and progressive passes (3.98) per 90 in the men’s next 14 competitions, clearly showcasing his abilities in the final third.

In comparison, Philogene-Bidace currently ranks in the top 8% for successful take-ons per 90 (3.07) when compared to positional peers, while he only ranks in the lowest 13% for progressive passes per 90 (2.36) and the top 38% for shot-creating actions per 90 (4.07), indicating that Rogers has clearly impressed more across the same performance metrics.

Rogers is versatile and can not only operate on both wings with ease, but also either as an attacking midfielder or a centre-forward, and this adaptability was clearly one of the reasons why Emery persisted in securing the services of the youngster.

During the first half of the 2023/24 campaign, the 6 foot 2 sensation not only scored seven goals, but he also grabbed nine assists too, and it shows that he is equally adept at scoring and providing plenty of chances for others.

ByTom Lever Feb 14, 2024

While Philogene-Bidace is enjoying a solid debut campaign for Hull, Rogers certainly looks like he could go on to be an even bigger talent than him over the coming years.

He will now need to break into the Villa starting XI and start showcasing the form which led the Midlands side to lure him to the riches of the Premier League last month.

Chelsea hold talks over move to sign £30m "star" who could cover for James

Chelsea are gearing up for a busy end to the January transfer window and could make an offer for a new player who has caught the eye at Stamford Bridge due to his versatility.

Chelsea January rumours

So far, the Blues have been relatively quiet in the market, with the focus so far being on outgoings. However, Mauricio Pochettino did seem to admit last month that winter window signings were on the cards.

"The Sporting Director and us, we are always talking and assessing – if we need to do something, we'll be ready," said Pochettino on January transfers at Chelsea.

"The pressure is always to bring young talent, and we have different types of targets – with experience, without experience, some younger than others and that's what it takes to provide the team with what it needs.

"We need to be open to describing the situation. Always communication is really good with the owners, we're sharing everything. It's about sharing ideas; we need each other to express our vision in a way that's a positive statement for the club. If we need to add, we do it together, in a way that takes the best decision for the club."

There have been plenty of rumours regarding a new striker arriving, with Napoli’s Victor Osimhen appearing to be the top target in 2024, although five alternative forwards have been offered to the club as short-term solutions.

Additions at the back could also be made, with full-backs Ben Chilwell and Reece James struggling with injury and Ian Maatsen heading out on loan. Manchester United’s Luke Shaw emerged as a possible target last week, but it looks as if a move for Southampton’s Kyle Walker-Peters could be made before the deadline.

Chelsea hold Walker-Peters talks

According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea have held talks with Walker-Peters’ agent over the chance of a possible January deal. The report claims that a bid could now be made for his services and there ‘is some belief from sources close to the player that he could be available for £30m this month’.

It is believed that ‘his ability to play at both right and left-back is attractive to Chelsea’ and the fact he could cover for James and Chilwell is ‘pushing the Chelsea board to make a decision over his future’.

Labelled a Saints “star” by reporter Alfie House, Walker-Peters has shown his versatility this season in the Championship by turning out as a left-back, attacking midfielder and right-winger on occasions alongside his regular right-back role.

The 26-year-old has even contributed to four goals in 26 second-tier games and has been Southampton’s best defensive performer this season, as per WhoScored.

The former Spurs man could therefore be a shrewd late January addition at Stamford Bridge after showing his versatility and quality during the current campaign, and by the looks of things, a deal could be one to watch.

Celtic now in contract talks with "exciting" player after Parkhead twist

As he closed in on the expiry of his contract in the summer, Celtic youngster Rocco Vata had seemed all set to leave Parkhead. Clubs in Italy have been showing interest, with Bologna the first to emerge as a potential suitor and then Serie B side Como FC making an approach too.

The Hoops reportedly rejected multiple bids for Vata during last summer's transfer window, but they initially gave him permission to leave this month, even though they were set to earn less than £350,000 in compensation. Now, though, there's seemingly a twist at Parkhead following developments on Wednesday.

Vata could yet stay at Celtic

According to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, who shared a Rocca Vata update, Celtic have now begun contract talks with the Irishman. Hoops officials have initiated discussions with the players' agency, CAA Base, in the hope of convincing him to stay in Glasgow.

Vata is "believed to be keen" on remaining with the club, but on the condition that he's shown the "right pathway" to Brendan Rodgers' first-team. It remains to be seen, then, whether the negotiations have the desired outcome.

Vata can make Celtic forget about Van Hooijdonk

It's promising for Celtic that Vata camp are at least receptive to sitting down for a fresh round of talks. The 18-year-old, who can play as a striker, winger or a number 10, has underlined his potential this season while in action for the club's b-team in the Lowlands League, scoring 12 goals in 15 appearances. He's also making waves at the international level too, having scored a double on his debut for Ireland's under-21s in September.

Last weekend, as Celtic returned to action following their winter break against Highland League side Buckie Thistle in the Scottish Cup, Rodgers handed Vata a start, perhaps a sign that progress had been made behind the scenes. The 18-year-old took his opportunity by scoring his first goal for the club in a resounding 5-0 win.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.

At every level, he's showing that he's an "exciting" talent (in the words of talent scout Jacek Kulig), and it feels like Celtic could end up regretting it if they lose him. As stated, Vata needs to be shown a pathway, and that could involve more opportunities in the Scottish Premiership. For all his promise, he hasn't even been named in the matchday squad for a league game this season.

It was reported in Italy that Bologna's interest in Vata could potentially smooth over a deal for their striker Sydney van Hooijdonk, with Rodgers looking to strengthen at centre-forward before the end of the window. It's theoretically possible that taking Vata off the table will scupper that move, but the hope will be that the youngster reaches such a high level in a few years' time that Van Hooijdonk is ultimately forgotten about.

While it isn't a new face and may not generate the same level of excitement, this could end up being one of the most important pieces of business Celtic conduct this month.

Leeds gem who had fewer touches than Meslier was "superb" vs Cardiff

Leeds United kept up the pressure on both Ipswich Town and Southampton with a convincing 3-0 win away to Cardiff City this afternoon, with Daniel Farke's men powering to a third successive win in all competitions – having scored three goals without reply in each of those triumphs.

Defeats to both Preston North End and West Bromwich Albion had somewhat stopped the Whites in their tracks, yet the promotion hopefuls have recovered emphatically after seeing off Birmingham City, Peterborough and now the Bluebirds, with the returning Patrick Bamford notably finding the net in each of those victories.

Seemingly looking back to his best following what has been an underwhelming last couple of years for the Englishman, Bamford spearheaded an attack that simply ran riot at the Cardiff City Stadium, in what The Athletic's Phil Hay described as a "demolition job" by the visitors.

The scoreline could have been even more emphatic had Crysencio Summerville not struck the woodwork late on, although Farke will be more than content following a routine win in which a host of his stars came to the party.

Leeds' star performers vs Cardiff

As mentioned above, it was another fine outing for that man Bamford as he struck the early blow to give the away side control, albeit while not finishing quite as spectacularly as he did against Posh in the FA Cup last week.

Even so, the experienced marksman now has four goal involvements from just his last three outings, with summer signing Joel Piroe – who started on the bench earlier today – no doubt fearing for his place in the starting lineup.

With Bamford taking command as the focal point in attack, it gave another opportunity for Georginio Rutter to sparkle in that number ten berth, with the young Frenchman – who won ten duels and provided two key passes – capping his fine afternoon after producing a composed finish late on.

There was also an "imperious" showing from Glen Kamara in the centre of the park – as per journalist Adam Pope – while the aforementioned Summerville also sparkled once again despite his penalty miss, notably laying on the assist for Rutter's 88th-minute strike.

Leeds forward Dan James.

It was Daniel James on the other flank who particularly sparkled, however, with Pope writing on Twitter that the Wales international "going forward and defending was superb", having been integral to all that was good about Leeds' dominant showing.

Daniel James' game in numbers vs Cardiff

On the face of it, it may not appear that the former Manchester United man was too heavily involved in proceedings, having actually made just 39 touches in total, prior to being withdrawn at the death – with even Illan Meslier (48) earning more touches of the ball in the sticks.

That being said, James certainly made his presence felt when he was in possession, notably playing his part in the breakaway final goal after surging into the Cardiff half before unselfishly squaring the ball to Summerville at the back post.

The wing wizard had earlier also been in the right place at the right time to poke home into an empty net on the half-hour mark, taking his season tally to nine goals and five assists in 25 Championship games – already the most productive campaign of his career to date.

So often maligned for his wasteful nature in the final third – having been described as "headless" in the past by pundit Darren Bent – the diminutive speedster is, to his credit, proving the doubters wrong, having also registered two key passes in the Welsh capital.

Although the one-time Swansea City man did lose possession on ten occasions, he also came close to adding a second for himself after seeing an effort strike the crossbar, having been deserving of his 7/10 match rating, as per LeedsLive's Beren Cross.

While such an outing may have come against a frankly dismal opposition, that display will now be the benchmark for both James and his teammates, heading into an undoubtedly crucial next few months for the West Yorkshire side.

    WHAT WAYNE ROONEY SAID

When asked on Sky Sports if he thinks Ten Hag's job is on the line, Rooney said: "I think they all are. Manager, coaches, players, recruitment, the whole club.

"They've obviously got some difficult games coming up, and then they've got the FA Cup Final. So for me as a player, now you need to show you where to you want to play for this football club, and you've got a big game to end the season against Manchester City, but that has to start from today. You can't just turn it on in an FA Cup final. So it has to start from today and go on up until our final.

He added: "We finished seventh with under David Moyes when I was here. I know that Moyes lost his job, but it never, ever felt as bad as what it is now."

Moyes succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson at United but lasted only 10 months in the role. In his time there, the Red Devils reached the Champions League quarter-finals, the League Cup semi-finals, and went onto finish the season in seventh with 64 points. At present, United are eighth and if they lose to Arsenal, they will be 10 points adrift of that total with two matches remaining.

Interim coach full of praise for captain Jason Holder and spinner Roston Chase after crushing Barbados win

Richard Pybus has urged his West Indies team to “keep their feet on the floor” after a thumping victory over England in Barbados.West Indies defied the Test rankings to inflict a 381-run win over England. But while Pybus, the interim head coach, was full of praise for the performance, he has warned his team that England will attempt to hit back in Antigua, location of the second Test starting on Thursday.”One swallow does not make a summer,” Pybus said. “Is it my job to keep their feet on the floor? Absolutely. We have our goals for the series and we have ticked off the first Test. But England will be hurting. They are a quality side and I have huge respect for them. They will come back at us in Antigua. Our game has to be at the highest level for them.”Pybus was particularly full of praise for Roston Chase, who claimed eight wickets in England’s second-innings, and Jason Holder, the captain, but pointed out that the overall bowling performance built pressure upon the England side.ALSO READ: Holder-Dowrich behind only Dhoni-Laxman”Chase was wonderful,” he said. “Roston bowled exceptionally well. His control was good, he set good fields and exerted a huge amount of pressure throughout the game with his consistency.”But I think the pressure created by the bowing unit was great, which is what happens when you have four good quick bowlers. As a unit they complemented each other. Roston bowled well but when you have pressure at both ends it is pretty tough for the batters.Pybus added that West Indies’ complete performance was down to the leadership of Holder, whom he described as “incredible”. Holder produced with bat, ball and in the field, lifting him to No. 1 in the ICC’s allrounder rankings.”We delivered on a gameplan with precision,” Pybus said. “The team kept their cool and did what we have looked to do strategically. That is all credit to Jason. He is a calm and composed guy. It is one thing to lead strategically, it is another to lead with performance. There were many special performances but his was exceptional. It was just an incredible performance.”Meanwhile Johnny Grave, the CWI chief executive, has branded criticism of the West Indies team from former England players such as Geoff Boycott and Andrew Flintoff as “borderline disrespectful”.”I saw Andrew Flintoff say he can’t believe Jason Holder got a double-hundred,” Grave told the BBC. “Yet I think Jason Holder is a fantastic cricketer and has been performing so over the last 18 months. He’s a brilliant captain.”
