Cricket Australia will look to introduce third-umpire technology for all WBBL games next season in a bid to introduce parity between televised and streamed matches.Inconsistencies in officiating have been highlighted time and time again this season, raising concerns from current and past players.Hobart Hurricanes opener Lizelle Lee should have been out stumped for 12 on Monday night against Sydney Thunder, only to be given not out and finish with 91.Brisbane Heat’s Mignon du Preez was also declared run out in bizarre fashion against Adelaide Strikers on Sunday night. With the bails already off, Strikers bowler Amanda-Jade Wellington removed one of the stumps to effect the dismissal.Related

It’s understood CA has already begun internal discussions to remedy the issue for next year. After introducing the decision review system for the 24 free-to-air games last year, CA will expand that to include an extra 10 matches next season.Talks are already in place to have fixed run-out cameras positioned for all other games, ensuring a third-umpire can be called upon in every WBBL match.”We’re always focused on continuous improvement around the competition, whether that’s scheduling, players, technology or officiating,” Big Bash boss Alistair Dobson told AAP.”Next year is the first year of our new media rights agreement, which will bring with it some further growth in the technology and facilities available at WBBL games”We’re really optimistic we’ll be able to continue to improve and enhance WBBL matches around the use of technology and decision making.”Tahlia McGrath at the launch of the WBBL’s Stadium Series•Getty Images

Man Utd now racing rival clubs to sign "insane" £46m Premier League forward

Manchester United are now racing rival English clubs to the signature of an “insane” Premier League forward, with a big development in the transfer saga expected soon, according to a report.

Man Utd pursuing new wingers this summer

In truth, a huge rebuild is probably needed to turn Man United back into contenders for the top honours, but they appear to be particularly keen on a new winger ahead of the summer, given that Antony and Marcus Rashford were sent out on loan in January.

Barcelona’s Raphinha is said to be one of the more outlandish targets, with a report revealing United could have the capability to make a huge bid for the Brazilian, who is currently thought to be among the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or.

Antoine Semenyo has also emerged as an option for the Red Devils, in light of an impressive campaign with AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League this season, with the Cherries making an unexpected push for Europe.

The Red Devils would be willing to use Rasmus Hojlund in a deal to sign a top striker, according to one journalist.

Brighton & Hove Albion are also vying for a European spot, and Man United are thought to be interested in a winger currently playing for the Seagulls, with a report from Caught Offside revealing they are among the suitors for Kaoru Mitoma.

Ruben Amorim’s side are set to battle their Premier League rivals for the winger, with Chelsea and Liverpool also eyeing a deal, which could be relatively affordable, with an asking price of around €55m (£46m) being touted.

Brighton & Hove Albion's KaoruMitomain action with Fulham's Timothy Castagne

However, there could be a big development in the transfer saga soon, as Brighton are now believed to be trying desperately to tie him down to a new contract, which would see Mitoma extend his stay at the American Express Stadium until 2030.

"Insane" Mitoma enjoying another impressive campaign

The Japanese winger has been a key player for Brighton for quite some time, and former manager Roberto De Zerbi was a big fan, saying: “I have no words left for Mitoma. He’s really underrated but trust me, he’s so so underrated. The world of football hasn’t understood the value of Mitoma. He can be an incredible player for any manager, not just for me. He’s insane.”

The Brighton star has been particularly impressive since the turn of the year, picking up five goals and one assist in all competitions in 2025, having cemented his place in the starting XI.

£46m seems like a fair price for a player of Mitoma’s ability, so it is promising news that Man United are in the race for his signature. However, a move does not seem particularly likely as things stand, given that a new deal to remain at Brighton could be on the cards.

Jozy Altidore sees ‘opportunity’ for USMNT with Christian Pulisic’s Gold Cup absence, opens up on working with Michael B. Jordan, Tyler Adams

Altidore speaks exclusively about the USMNTGives opinion on Pulisic's Gold Cup absenceShares excitement for next calendar year of soccerFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

CARY, N.C. – U.S. men's national team legend Jozy Altidore said he has no issue with Christian Pulisic requesting not to be a part of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup roster. Rather, the 35-year-old is excited to see the group that there for the tournament, ahead of what he describes as a "massive opportunity" for the national team program.

Speaking at The Soccer Tournament 2025, where he is coaching AFC Bournemouth, Altidore reflected on the AC Milan star’s absence and what it could mean for the USMNT heading into the continental competition.

"Listen, this is an opportunity for the team," Altidore told GOAL. "No one player replaces Christian, and if he needed the time off, he needed the time off. This is a chance for the group to come together and really step up with some big absences."

Altidore also shared his excitement about the next year of the footballing calendar for the country. Beginning in June 2025, the CONCACAF Gold Cup and FIFA Club World Cup will both be held in the U.S., and come next summer, the FIFA World Cup will follow in 2026, with matches played in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

"It’s a massive opportunity for soccer in this country, and a chance at a real rebirth for the game here. I’m excited, fans are excited, and the players are excited," he said. "It’s a real opportunity and I’m looking forward to it."

The U.S. roster for the Gold Cup this summer will feature plenty of new faces, amid an injury crisis, along with a handful of regulars being unavailable. In addition to Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, and Gio Reyna are unavailable due to the Club World Cup, while teammate of Pulisic's, Yunus Musah, is absent due to "personal reasons."

In the striker position, the U.S. is particularly going to be tested in the competition. Both Ricardo Pepi and Folarin Balogun are missing out due to injury, and after a tough performance in the March Nations League, Josh Sargent was left out of the squad this summer.

An area where Altidore excelled for the USMNT for over a decade, he believes it's a wide-open race at the moment – but with the group available for Mauricio Pochettino this summer, it's all about opportunity. MLS strikers Patrick Agyemang and Brian White are joined by uncapped 20-year-old prospect Damion Downs, Coventry's Haji Wright and FC Utrecht's Paxten Aaronson.

"The striker position is an interesting one," Altidore said. "It’s hard and not easy to play. There is a group of talented guys there, and any one of them could emerge. I’m looking forward to seeing them all."WHAT ALTIDORE SAID ABOUT TST

Altidore was offered the coaching role with Bournemouth at the 7v7 tournament in North Carolina, thanks to U.S. international Tyler Adams – who plays for the senior team in England – and co-owner Michael B. Jordan, via a personal training initiative they collaborated on.

"The conversation stemmed from all of us at Sogility – a soccer tech training facility – and so Bournemouth was interested in partnering with businesses that are trying to push the envelope in soccer, and we started discussing how we could work together on this," Altidore explained. "There were some conversations with Michael's team, that's who I got in touch with originally, and he's getting more and more into soccer, so there was a lot of synergy there. Our groups are partnered on a couple of other ventures, so that just made a lot of sense."

Rangers loanee who left in 2022 is now worth 2421% more than Lyall Cameron

Fair to say, there have been better times to be a Rangers supporter.

On Sunday, Philippe Clement’s Gers were dumped out of the Scottish Cup by Queen’s Park, beaten 1-0 at Ibrox, with James Tavernier seeing a 96th minute dramatically saved by an inspired Calum Ferrie.

This is the Light Blues’ first Scottish Cup defeat against lower-league opposition since being beaten by Berwick Rangers 58 years ago, while, remarkably, it is the first time ever that they’ve been defeated at home by a side from a lower division in the competition’s 152-year history.

This has only intensified the scrutiny on already under-pressure manager Clement, but his players are simply not doing enough, making it hard to believe that one of the Premier League’s best youngsters was plying his trade in Govan not that long ago, valued 25 times more than Rangers’ newest recruit.

Lyall Cameron: Rangers future midfielder

Last month, it was announced that Dundee midfielder Lyall Cameron had signed a pre-contract agreement with Rangers, which will see him make the move to Glasgow in the summer.

Technical Director Nils Koppen described Cameron as a “talented young player”, while Scottish football writer Kai Watson asserts he “has the potential to play at a higher level than the Scottish Premiership”.

Meantime, speaking on Premier Sports’ Scottish Football Social Club, former Hibs and Hearts midfielder Michael Stewart described Cameron’s move as financially low-risk, with Alan Pattullo of the Scotsman believing they’ve secured “one of Scottish football’s hottest young talents”.

The two clubs will need to agree a compensation settlement; if not, a fee will be decided by a tribunal, as Connor Barron’s move from Aberdeen was last year, which ultimately saw Rangers pay £639,920 plus up to £250,000 in “conditional performance-based payments”.

Cameroon has ten goals and eight assists to his name this season, having bagged a brace against Airdrieonians in the Scottish Cup on Saturday, with his current manager Tony Docherty adding the move is a “credit” to his consistent “level of performance”.

Thus, it’s hard to dispute the fact that Rangers have secured a top talent for next season, but they had an even greater talent on their books not that long ago.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Underwhelming Rangers ace is now starring in the Premier League

The 2021/22 season will always be remembered fondly by Rangers supporters as the year they reached the Europa League Final in Seville.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team dumped out Borussia Dortmund, Crvena Zvezda, Braga and RB Leipzig throughout the knockout stages, before a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in the final.

An unused substitute that night at Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán: Amad Diallo.

Back in January 2021, having made just five senior appearances for Atalanta, totalling 59 minutes, Manchester United paid a whopping £37m to secure Amad’s services, a huge outlay for such an inexperienced youngster.

Well, after making little instant impact in the Red Devils’ first team, accumulating only nine appearances in 12 months, the Ivorian joined Rangers on loan in January 2022, scoring little over four minutes into his debut against Ross County in Dingwall.

However, after that, he did little else in a Rangers jersey, making just 13 appearances in total, only six of which were starts, his two other goals for the club coming in inconsequential post-split fixtures, the most telling statistic being the fact that he remained an unused substitute for all nine Europa League matches.

Fast forward three seasons, it’s hard to believe that, as Rob Dawson of ESPN puts it, Amad has been Manchester United’s best player this season, with former Man United midfielder Owen Hargreaves adding “he makes things happen” in big moments and fans “just have to love watching him”.

Transfermarkt believes his current value to be £21m, the highest it has ever been, while the aforementioned Cameron is valued at under £1m.

So, let’s analyse how the youngster has improved since his brief loan spell in Glasgow.

As the table shows, Amad’s breakout year came immediately after leaving Rangers, spending the following campaign on loan at Sunderland in the EFL Championship.

Former Black Cats’ captain Corry Evans said, despite the old idiom that one should never fall in love with a loan player, supporters “absolutely adored” Amad on Wearside, describing him as “unstoppable”, while Dougie Critchley of Sky Sports added “Sunderland gave him a platform that he really needed at that time”.

It’s fair to say Rangers did not see the best of the Côte d’Ivoire international, Tom English of BBC Sport describing his spell at Ibrox as “underwhelming“, hence why fans surely could not have foreseen just how good the winger would become.

Only 23% duels won: Liverpool’s 4/10 flop was even worse than Elliott

Up to this point, Arne Slot’s Liverpool hadn’t really shown visible chinks in their armour, with an EFL Cup final on the horizon and a top spot in the Premier League very firmly in their grasp.

However, after Sunday afternoon’s disastrous trip to Devon, the Reds will be concerned about the strength of their full squad, as a much-changed Liverpool side crashed out of the FA Cup 1-0 to lower league opposition Plymouth Argyle.

Slot will be disappointed with a whole host of his reserve faces after this crushing defeat on the road, therefore, particularly when it comes to the lacklustre showing of Harvey Elliott, who gifted the Pilgrims the golden penalty that sealed their gigantic Cup upset.

The 9 greatest FA Cup upsets of all time

The FA Cup is famous for its giant-killing moments, but which are the greatest upsets in the competition’s history?

ByBarney Lane Oct 31, 2024 Harvey Elliott's performance in numbers

Indeed, this would have been viewed as a big opportunity for Elliott to prove that he belongs in his manager’s main team selections moving forward, having made zero starts in the Premier League this season under the Dutchman.

Instead, the ex-Feyenoord boss will feel even more fixed in his ways that Elliott isn’t worthy of regular minutes in his first XI, with an obvious handball early into the second half allowing Ryan Hardie to be Plymouth’s hero from the spot.

Away from this horror moment at Home Park in isolation, the 21-year-old never looked comfortable all afternoon long, with possession given up a costly 20 times by the out-of-sorts number 19, as the well-drilled hosts were constantly awarded ways into the game to pull off a shock win.

Whilst Elliott’s handball will steal the majority of the headlines about where Liverpool went wrong, there were far worse performers from a Reds perspective, with a limp attacker for the away side really struggling to get going against the Championship’s basement outfit.

Chiesa's performance in numbers

Federico Chiesa was in the exact same boat as his midfield teammate heading into this contest in Devon, with the Italian having to make do with the odd bench appearance here and there in league action.

For a talent that was once named in the Serie A team of the season, it was slightly embarrassing to see how little he could offer against a team that sat rock bottom of the second tier, regardless of how well organised and dogged the hosts were.

He was way off his scintillating best in Italy playing at Home Park that’s for sure, with the numbers above making for some grim reading as Chiesa failed to hit a single on-target effort at Conor Hazard’s busy net.

Described as “atrocious” by one Reds content creator, the underperforming 27-year-old also only managed to complete one successful dribble from ten attempted, throw away possession a colossal 29 times and further added insult to injury by winning just 23% of his duels on the day.

Therefore, it wasn’t a great shock to see Chiesa receive some pelters after the famous FA Cup clash was over, with Daily Express journalist Amos Murphy handing out a 4/10 rating to the ex-Juventus man, stating that Slot ‘would’ve wanted more’ from a player who has shown his class on the big occasion previously in his career.

In the here and now, he floundered unfortunately, with the Reds number 14 now firmly chucked back into the reserve picture after such a drab performance.

Whilst Plymouth will still be celebrating this mammoth victory for many days to come, Slot will hope he can put this one down as a bad day at the office for his side before then returning to winning ways, with the Dutchman now well aware that his full squad can’t cut it when thrust into the spotlight.

Per The Sun, Spurs are considering a move to appoint Parker as Postecoglou's replacement this summer. The Australian's future is up in the air and it appears that he could leave the club regardless of whether the club win the Europa League or not; they play Bodo/Glimt in the semi-finals. And Spurs are now seemingly lining up alternatives.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Parker has guided Burnley back to the Premier League this season, and they could still win the Championship, which is said to have hugely impressed senior Spurs officials. Spurs want to appoint a manager who can play progressive football and blood younger players, two core principles of Parker's managerial style, but the former midfielder has had two ill-fated spells in the top-flight with both Fulham and Burnley.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The Sun quote a source who claims that Parker was almost appointed in 2021, when he was at Fulham, although they also claim that it may simply be too early for him to make the step into the Spurs dugout. Spurs have also been linked with the likes of Marco Silva and Andoni Iraola, of the Cottagers and Bournemouth respectively.

    WHAT NEXT?

Spurs play Liverpool this weekend before they take on Bodo/Glimt in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final. Postecoglou simply has to win the competition.

Man Utd interested in "pure difference maker" as dream Rashford replacement

Manchester United have made an impressive start to 2025. The Red Devils have not lost yet, drawing away to Liverpool in the Premier League and Arsenal in the FA Cup, which they proceeded to win on penalties. Most recently, Ruben Amorim’s side got a 3-1 home win against Southampton, who are bottom of the Premier League.

The star of the show has been Amad. The Ivorian scored the equaliser at Anfield, scored his penalty against the Gunners and, most recently, bagged a 12-minute hattrick against the Saints from the 82nd to 94th minute to earn his side all three points.

However, United clearly feel Amad cannot bear the responsibility all on their own, given they are reportedly targeting an attacking addition.

Man United target new attacker

The player in question here is Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens. The Englishman, who has yet to be capped by his country, has been superb for the German side this season and is now a target for some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

According to a report from Florian Plettenberg, reporting for Sky Sports, the Red Devils are believed to be ‘seriously interested’ in making a move to sign the 20-year-old, with a move in the summer potentially on the cards.

However, they are not the only side interested in signing him. United are set to go head-to-head with German giants Bayern Munich, and Gittens ‘remains a top transfer target’ for the Bundesliga side.

Plettenberg adds that the former Manchester City youngster is likely to become available if Dortmund fail to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Why Gittens would be a good signing

It has been a very impressive season so far for former Manchester City academy player Gittens. The 20-year-old has become a key player for Dortmund this term, scoring 11 goals and providing five assists in 26 games for the club.

That includes an impressive four goals and one assist in six Champions League appearances. The winger scored away to Real Madrid in a 5-2 defeat, but actually made it 2-0 to Dortmund at the time, bursting to the back post and getting on the end of Donyell Malen’s cross.

It is clear to see why football talent scout Jacek Kulig described Gittens as a “pure difference-maker”. Like Amad does for United, the Dortmund star is someone who can pop up with a big goal or assist to change a game for his side. A goal at the Bernabeu is a perfect example of that.

In fact, he could be the perfect long-term replacement for Marcus Rashford. It seems like his time at United might be over, with Plettenberg reporting on Thursday that Dortmund, and AC Milan, are showing interest in the winger.

If United view Gittens as their replacement for Rashford, the Dortmund number 43 will have to perform superbly if he wants to match the numbers of the Wythenshawe-born star. The United number 10 has 138 goals and 63 assists in 426 games for the club.

To get an idea of how good of a replacement Gittens might be for Rashford, statistical comparisons can be drawn. These particular stats on the pair’s FBref numbers from 2021/22, the Dortmund winger’s first season, up to the 2024/25 campaign.

You can clearly see how good of a ball carrier Gittens is. Per 90 minutes, he averages 5.41 progressive carries, compared to 3.06 for Rashford. He also averages slightly more key passes per game, with 1.10, as opposed to 0.94 for the United star. However, Rashford does come out on top in goals per 90 minutes, with 0.39 compared to Gittens’ 0.34.

It certainly seems like Gittens would be an excellent Rashford replacement if the United academy graduate were to leave Old Trafford, given the quality he can provide as a ball carrier, a creator, and a goalscorer on the left flank.

He is statistically able to hold his own against the United ace, and for the right price, could be a fantastic signing as the long-term replacement for Rashford.

Alex Malcolm29-Jul-2022Justin Langer’s next career move has been confirmed, with the former Australia coach joining Channel Seven’s commentary team to provide analysis on the Test side he recently coached. Langer’s move was announced on Friday after being widely expected when he withdrew from the opportunity to coach Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL.Close friend Ricky Ponting – also a Channel Seven commentator – had pursued Langer to coach Hurricanes, after himself being appointed as their head of strategy. But Ponting confirmed last week that Langer had decided against returning to coaching in the short term, and will now commentate on the players he coached for four years.Related

Seven’s coverage is only available in Australia, as CA have two television broadcasters providing separate broadcast feeds with separate commentary teams on Australia’s home Test matches. Foxtel provides the global feed, with Seven broadcasting to local Australian audiences only. But Langer’s move will likely cause some intrigue as he comments on the team that he departed from in messy circumstances earlier this year. Langer had wanted to continue coaching Australia’s men’s team long-term, but was only offered a six-month contract extension in February after relationships with players and staff had become strained over the previous 15 months.Instead, Langer chose to resign rather than accept the short-term extension.A raft of Langer’s former team-mates – including Ponting – had delivered a chorus of criticism of both CA and the players in the aftermath, forcing Test captain Pat Cummins to defend his team’s role in the saga.Australia’s next Test assignment will be a home two-match series against West Indies starting in Perth in late November, which is likely to be Langer’s commentary debut.
