A partida será no estádio do Morumbi.

Chelsea owners BlueCo agree to sign Julio Enciso from Brighton but will winger move to Stamford Bridge or sister club Strasbourg?

The ownership group of Chelsea and Strasbourg, BlueCo, has agreed a deal to sign Brighton midfielder Julio Enciso for an undisclosed fee.

David Ornstein reports that the Paraguayan has chosen to join the group, without knowing which club he will immediately join. Personal terms have been struck with the consortium. It is expected that Enciso will initially join the French side but he is viewed as a long-term prospect for Chelsea's first team.

The 21-year-old's career on the south coast has been disrupted by injury and managerial changes. He was not part of Fabian Hurzeler's plans for the upcoming season, as he spent the second half of last season on loan with Ipswich Town. He scored two goals and made three assists in 13 appearances for The Tractor Boys, as they were immediately relegated back to the Championship. Enciso is currently sidelined with a knee injury, that required surgery.

DID YOU KNOW?

This is the latest in a string of deals struck between BlueCo and Brighton since the ownership group took control of Chelsea in 2022. With notable signings including Marc Cucurella, Moises Caicedo, Robert Sanchez and the acquisition of Joao Pedro and Enciso this summer, they have spent more than £250 million ($336m) on ex-Seagulls in the past three years.

The young Paraguayan has been short on gametime over the past season. Given Chelsea's glut of attacking options, a move to France is probably the correct decision for his development.

No World Cup SOS for Jofra Archer, as Reece Topley faces cruel exit with broken finger

Reece Topley’s cruel misfortune with injury has struck once more with a suspected broken finger set to rule him out of the remainder of England’s World Cup campaign. But Jofra Archer will not be considered to replace him despite England now facing five must-win matches even to reach the tournament’s knock-out stages.Topley, who took four wickets in England’s solitary win over Bangladesh at Dharamsala, was once again his team’s most penetrative seam bowler, claiming three wickets in his 8.5 overs, including the big scalp of Quinton de Kock with the second ball of the match. However, he left the field with one ball remaining of his fourth over, after stooping to intercept a fierce drive back down the ground from Rassie van der Dussen. The shot had flicked the tip of his left index finger before flying away for four, and though he did return to claim two more wickets after undergoing lengthy treatment, he was not called upon to bat as England succumbed to a crushing 229-run loss, their largest losing margin in men’s ODI history.”I thought Reece Topley going back out to bowl with a broken finger showed great spirit,” Matthew Mott, England’s coach, told Sky Sports at the end of the contest, before clarifying that the team was still awaiting the full diagnosis. “We’re still waiting on that, but it’s very much looking like it’s a crack. Certainly that’s the early diagnosis, but we’ll find out properly with X-rays.”Topley’s own reaction as he left the field spoke volumes about the situation, however. He pushed over a chair and kicked out at a box behind the boundary boards, as he stalked to the dressing-room after yet another dose of extraordinary misfortune.Having featured on this ground in the World T20 in 2016, Topley did not play international cricket over the next four years as he battled back from a career-threatening stress fracture of the back, and having earned selection for last year’s T20 World Cup in Australia, he was ruled out before the competition began after twisting his ankle on a boundary marker ahead of a practice match in Brisbane. Then, having joined Royal Challengers Bangalore for this year’s IPL, he suffered a dislocated shoulder while fielding in his opening match. And now, he faces the prospect of another early exit from the competition. However, his replacement will not be Archer – who has been with the squad as their solitary travelling reserve, with the loosely expressed hope that he might be considered fit enough to feature at the back end of the competition, as he continues his rehabilitation from a long-term elbow problem.Mott, however, has now admitted that that will not be happening. ESPNcricinfo understands that Archer will instead leave India within 24 hours of England’s defeat. “Jof is actually not going to be considered for selection,” Mott confirmed. “He’s come out, he’s reported to the medical staff, but he’s not going to be able to play a part in the end of this campaign.”Any replacement will now be flown in directly from the UK, with Brydon Carse perhaps the most likely candidate after featuring in England’s home series against New Zealand in September. There is no stipulation that a replacement must be like-for-like, so they could use Topley’s injury as a chance to alter the balance of their squad. The news caps one of the most disastrous evenings in England’s World Cup history. Even allowing for the depths that the team plumbed in a series of abject campaigns between 1996 and 2015, never before had they conceded a total as high as South Africa’s 399 for 7, nor succumbed to such a vast defeat. And as defending champions, their campaign already looks dead in the water, with matches against Sri Lanka, India, Australia, Netherlands and Pakistan still to come.Related

“I can’t sugarcoat that, it was a hard night for us,” Mott admitted, adding that England’s decision to bowl first – in heat that Heinrich Klaasen, South Africa’s matchwinning centurion described as “brutal” – had been informed by statistics, rather than a gut feel for the conditions.”I think we come in with really good intentions in this game,” he said. “It was a fantastic cricket wicket. We looked at the ground stats, it said it was a good chasing ground. On reflection, I thought the heat was probably more than we bargained for. It certainly looked a little bit like a warzone there at times, particularly after Topley went off.”In a measure of what might have been, England actually outscored South Africa – 67 runs to 59 – in the first ten-over powerplay, but crucially they had lost four wickets by that stage, compared to South Africa’s one.”Hindsight is great. But we went out there in that powerplay to do a job and we were well on the way to doing that, and obviously it spiralled out of control in the last 10 overs,” Mott said, with Klaasen and Marco Jansen pounding a 151-run stand for the sixth wicket in just 80 balls.Jofra Archer has been with England’s white-ball squad since September, but isn’t ready for a recall•PA Photos/Getty Images

“That was class batting at the end there, with two set batters. We’d got five wickets in the first 40 overs, we’d probably done the bulk of the work to be honest, a couple more wickets there, we could have restricted them to under 300, which I think in these conditions would have been very achievable.”When pressed by Sky Sports’ Nasser Hussain on England’s decision to do away with three allrounders in Liam Livingstone, Chris Woakes and Sam Curran, and leave their batting dangerously top-heavy with David Willey batting out of position at No. 7, Mott conceded that the criticism of the decision was “a fair shout”.”These are the sort of games you’ve got to learn from, and now we’re backed right into a corner,” he added. “Looking at our match-ups with South Africa, we wanted to go a little bit pace-heavy. We thought that was our best way of taking wickets throughout the innings, but that balance is something we’ll definitely discuss going into the next game.”But it is very clear for us what we need to do now. Net run-rate is basically a non-event for us. We just have to win all our games and hope things go our way. But it’s certainly not the spot we really wanted to be in.”

WA's understudy attack set up innings victory over Victoria

Rocchiccioli and Gannon claim three wickets each as the two-time defending champions won by an innings without their frontline pace attack

Tristan Lavalette07-Oct-2023Western Australia’s second-string attack overwhelmed Victoria on a sluggish WACA pitch in an ominous start to their bid for a hat-trick of Sheffield Shield titles. In a re-match of the last two Shield finals, WA once again had Victoria’s number as they showed off their enviable depth of talent. Without frontline quicks Lance Morris, Jhye Richardson, Matt Kelly and Joel Paris, WA’s new-look pace attack produced a disciplined performance on the final day to bowl Victoria for a second time out shortly after tea.Fringe quick Cameron Gannon was relentless, while left-arm debutant Liam Haskett shone with fast and aggressive bowling. With Morris and Richardson engaged in centre-wicket practice after the match, selection headaches loom for WA’s hierarchy.Tall offspinner Corey Rocchiccioli conjured sharp spin and found inconsistent bounce on a wearing pitch that finally started to play some tricks having been sedate throughout the match. Rocchiccioli finished with the remarkable figures of 3 for 14 from 26.2 overs, including 20 maidens.Having taken three wickets on day one, Rocchiccioli outbowled Test offspinner Todd Murphy, who took just 1 for 141 off 32 overs in WA’s first innings.”He’s going to keep getting better,” WA captain Sam Whiteman said of Rocchiccioli. “The impressive thing is he’s taking wickets at the WACA which is notorious for [a lack of] spin.”I’m particularly proud of the bowling group, which is a completely different attack than what we finished with last season.”Allrounder Aaron Hardie capped a strong match by taking the early wicket of former Victoria captain Peter Handscomb. Hardie, who recently made his international limited overs debut, claimed five wickets for the match and made 48 at number five in WA’s first innings.WA’s attack set up the victory after bowling out Victoria for 256 on day one before opener Cameron Bancroft scored a century to power them into a big lead. With national selector Tony Dodemaide in the terraces, Bancroft made an early season statement to replace David Warner who is set to retire from Test cricket during the summer. But it was a particularly lacklustre performance from Victoria, who were left to rue gifting wickets on day one and they never recovered. The return of Will Pucovski, who made 39 in Victoria’s first innings, from an extended absence was encouraging, and so too was the final-day grit from nightwatchman Mitch Perry.”Getting sick of losing to them [WA], so was enough motivation to stay out there as long as I could,” said Perry, who made 43 from 173 balls.Resuming at 64 for 3, still trailing by 161 runs, Victoria’s hopes of avoiding defeat largely rested with Handscomb but he fell for 2 after being caught behind off a superb Hardie delivery. It ended a disappointing match for Handscomb, who has been keen to shake being pigeonholed as a subcontinent specialist. He lacked rhythm in a first innings of 31 from 85 balls and fell badly after miscuing a whip to point off a leading edge.Hardie, who had opened the bowling, was in a fiery mood with a searing bouncer smashing into Perry’s body and leaving him shaken. But Perry, something of a nightwatchman specialist, gamely fought on and found a willing partner in Jonathan Merlo, who was intent solely on defence.Pinned back to the crease, Merlo excruciatingly faced 36 balls without a run. He finally opened his account with a push through covers for two runs before being clean bowled next ball by a cracking Gannon delivery.Victoria shut up shop after lunch with captain Will Sutherland, normally such a belligerent batter, continuously blocking alongside Perry. They weren’t particularly looking for runs, essentially taking turns holding up an end. Sutherland’s 75-ball grind of 6 ended when Bancroft snared a sensational catch at short-leg off Haskett. Perry’s rearguard finally ended shortly before tea as Victoria inevitably slumped to a hefty first-up defeat.

Warwickshire clinch knockout spot with 10-over thumping

Northants need wins from final two group games after slipping to rain-affected defeat

ECB Reporters Network18-Aug-2023Warwickshire secured their place in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup knockout stage with a 24-run win over Northamptonshire in a ten-over thrash at Edgbaston. The endeavours of the Edgbaston groundstaff and the patience of the impressively large number of home fans who stayed through the rain was rewarded with a 5pm start and a sixth straight win for the Bears.Warwickshire made 104 for 3 as Ed Barnard belted 32 off 14 balls while skilful work from Simon Kerrigan (2-0-14-2) kept a brake on the run-rate.Northamptonshire never recovered from a stodgy start, hitting just two fours in the first three overs, and finished well short on 80 for 6 as Will Rhodes took 3 for 22 and Olly Hannon-Dalby 2 for 10. They now need to win both their remaining games to have a chance of qualifying.Put in, Warwickshire were abrasively launched by a stand of 40 in 20 balls by openers Barnard and Rob Yates. The latter sent one ball out of the stadium over the very short Pershore Road-side boundary but then perished when he chipped Jack White to mid-on.Warwickshire charged to 50 in four overs against the seamers but found the spin of Kerrigan harder to attack. The slow left-armer’s first ball dismissed Jacob Bethell, who lifted a reverse-sweep, and his fourth lured Barnard out of his ground to be stumped by skipper Lewis McManus.Rhodes (23 off 15 balls) and Michael Burgess (26 off 19) flailed away to mixed effect to add 51 in 33 balls to ensure a demanding target.Northamptonshire’s reply began slowly as Hannon-Dalby and Craig Miles each delivered an over for just five runs. Ricardo Vasconcelos lifted a Henry Brookes full toss to deep mid-wicket and the visitors’ decision to bat second came back to bite them as gloom descended. The innings’ first six, hoisted over the off side by Rob Keogh off Rhodes, at last came from the 33rd ball, but Keogh lifted the 34th only to extra cover.Tom Taylor, in prime form, launched his first ball for six and, while he was there, Northants still had a sniff, but Emilio Gay hoovered up 15 balls for his eight runs, Taylor skied Hannon-Dalby to extra cover, and the challenge of finding 47 from the last three overs proved far too much.

Tottenham eyeing Iraola alternative who Guardiola called "one of the best"

Tottenham Hotspur chiefs are continuing to conduct their due-diligence on potential replacements for Ange Postecoglou with the tactician’s future in serious doubt, and chairman Daniel Levy has more interesting names on his shortlist beyond rumoured top target Andoni Iraola.

Tottenham identify Andoni Iraola as leading manager candidate

According to credible reports recently, Postecoglou’s long-term future is now in “serious doubt”, following a dismal 2024/2025 campaign for Spurs.

The Lilywhites sit 14th in the Premier League table and have lost a disastrous 15 matches in the top flight, grim numbers for a ‘big six’ side, and while their plethora of injuries have played a major role in this, criticism has still surrounded Postecoglou.

“When you’ve had your best team available to you and you’ve lost at home to Ipswich, your best team’s been available to you,” said talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan.

“When you had your best team available, you’ve been 2-0 up against Brighton, you’ve lost. When you’ve had your best team available to you away at Selhurst Park to Crystal Palace, who at the time were stinking the place out, you lose.

“You don’t get those passes. I think you get some of them. So I think that Ange has to be accountable for some of the poor performances.”

Postecoglou made the best-ever start to a Premier League season by any new manager in the competition’s history last season, but the 59-year-old has suffered a serious crash back down to earth after what was a promising debut campaign in the Spurs dugout.

So much so, that Tottenham are reportedly considering a new manager to replace Postecoglou.

It is widely reported that Bournemouth’s Iraola is Tottenham’s leading managerial candidate, with Rayo Vallecano’s former boss having guided the Cherries to a very impressive campaign.

The south coast side are undergoing a damp patch of form right now, losing three out of their last four league games, but they remain surprise contenders to seal European qualification despite suffering their fair share of injury problems.

This has impressed Spurs enough for them to make the 42-year-old their top target to succeed Postecoglou, as per The Athletic and other sources. However, the same outlet reports that Levy has alternative options.

Tottenham eyeing Brentford boss Thomas Frank as Andoni Iraola alternative

Indeed, it is believed that fellow top-flight boss Thomas Frank is among the other names in their thinking.

The Dane is out of contract in 2027 and previous reports have suggested that Frank is expected to pursue a new challenge at the end of the season, following seven successful years as Brentford’s head coach.

Brentford managerThomasFrankbefore the matc

In that time, the 51-year-old has transformed Brentford from a Championship side to solid Premier League mainstays, and there is still an outside chance they qualify for Europe themselves this term.

The Athletic claims Tottenham are considering a move for Frank alongside Iraola, so this could be one to watch this summer. Man City boss Pep Guardiola, commenting on Frank last year, also called him “one of the best” coaches around.

“They are an extraordinary team,” said the City manager.

“What they do always makes sense. Every corner is a headache. They are compact. This season, they have a high press. Thomas is one of the best.”

122 touches, 100% dribbles: Liverpool star is now as undroppable as Salah

One or two Liverpool stars might have had their minds tethered to the Champions League when Anfield got going against Southampton.

Wednesday’s Parc des Princes contest was as gruelling for the players as it was anxiety-inducing for the fans, and it may have taken its toll as the Redmen struggled to get going.

Liverpool players celebrate Mo Salah's goal

But, like so many times before in 2024/25, Liverpool got the job done, claimed three more points for their haul and extended their lead at the top of the Premier League, to 16 points – albeit having played two games more than Arsenal.

Liverpool's performance vs Southampton

It was a slow and uninspiring start, with Saints, adrift at the bottom of the table, growing in confidence as the Reds retained plenty of possession but did rather little with it.

Arne Slot watched from up high as he served the second and final match of his touchline ban, but the camera picked out his furrowed face as he watched his team struggle.

Ultimately, Liverpool’s quality prevailed, with Darwin Nunez poking home after good work from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah converting two penalties to move Slot’s side one step closer to the title.

Darwin Nunez applauds Liverpool fans

While Nunez and Diaz needed to make an impact after respective recent lulls, Salah just keeps on firing, with his latest brace making it 27 goals and 17 assists from just 29 Premier League fixtures in 2024/25.

He’s a force to be reckoned with and – it goes without saying – undroppable. However, he’s not the only one, with another star really proving his inimitable quality on the pitch.

8/10 Liverpool star is as undroppable as Salah

Salah so often steals the headlines for Liverpool, but this is a team heading toward the Premier League title, into the Carabao Cup final and holding an advantage in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Performance in Numbers

Trent Alexander-Arnold, 26, has long been regarded not just as Liverpool’s most creative player, but one of the most proficient playmakers wearing laces today. But he’s long faced criticism for his defensive ability – unjustly, for the most part.

Liverpool'sTrentAlexander-Arnoldapplauds fans after the match

Against Southampton, both elements of the full-back’s game were neatly showcased, always looking to drive attacking play forward while defending smartly against a Saints side with nothing to lose. Indeed, he racked up 122 touches and completed all four of his attempted dribbles, while winning seven of his nine total duels.

The Liverpool Echo’s Ian Doyle was enamoured with the Three Lions star’s display, handing him an 8/10 rating (the match best) and writing: ‘Denied by Ramsdale first half and probed the Southampton defence throughout with his range of passing. Defensively on point, too, in very fine showing.’

While PSG ran rampant against Liverpool, without ever finding the back of the net, Trent stood firm as Bradley Barcola, Khvicha Kvaratskelia and co targetted him.

Conor Bradley is perhaps a more naturally sound defender, and though there have been calls that he could eventually replace his senior positional peer, Alexander-Arnold has served a reminder in recent weeks that there is no one quite like him.

Liverpool right-back Conor Bradley

He’s evolving into quite the complete player. Is it any wonder Real Madrid are so desperate to bring him to the Bernabeu at the end of his contract this summer?

For Liverpool’s part, FSG will fight tooth and nail to tie the vice-captain down for the remainder of his prime. If he keeps playing like this, he’s not only undroppable now but a piece of paramount importance when considering Liverpool’s success over the coming Slot-led years.

Not just Lindelof: Amorim must sell Man Utd man who earns more than Mainoo

Manchester United were knocked out of the FA Cup on Sunday after they were beaten by Premier League rivals Fulham on penalties at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils found themselves 1-0 down to a Calvin Bassey header but battled back to draw level through Bruno Fernandes, taking the game to extra time.

Ruben Amorim’s side were unable to find a winner in the additional 30 minutes and the tie went down to spot kicks, with two misses for United sealing their fate and denying them a quarter-final clash in the competition they won under Erik ten Hag last season.

It was a disappointing performance and result for United, in a season that feels full of them for the club, and Amorim’s last realistic chance at a trophy this term is now the Europa League.

The Portuguese head coach, who joined from Sporting to replace Ten Hag, may already have one eye on the summer transfer window and the decisions that he will have to take over several players.

Amorim

One player who could be on the chopping block is Swedish central defender Victor Lindelof, who was one of the players to miss from the spot on Sunday.

Victor Lindelof's performance against Fulham

The 30-year-old centre-back came off the bench to replace Leny Yoro in the 54th minute and may not have expected to rack up 67 minutes of action, including extra-time.

As part of a back three, Lindelof was fairly protected and put in a decent enough showing against the Cottagers, winning all three of his duels and completing 96% of his attempted passes.

The Sweden international made four clearances and two tackles, without being dribbled past a single time, and seemed to be on course for a solid outing at the heart of the defence.

Unfortunately, however, Lindelof’s own bravery let him down in the end. The centre-back stepped up to take one of the penalties, before the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Chido Obi-Martin, and saw his fairly weak effort saved by Bernd Leno.

As you can see in the clip above, the Swedish titan has proven in the past that he can stick away penalties in pressurised moments in the FA Cup, scoring at Wembley to book a place in the final in 2023.

Despite a decent performance outside of his penalty miss, Lindelof is one of the players who should be moved on by Amorim in the summer window.

Why Victor Lindelof should be let go

The former Benfica star is out of contract at the end of June and he has not done enough on the pitch to suggest that the Portuguese head coach should be looking to extend his deal at Old Trafford.

With only a couple of months left to go in the season, Lindelof has yet to start a Premier League game for United. All six of his appearances in the top-flight have been as a substitute, which speaks to where he is in the pecking order of centre-backs.

Chalkboard

This shows that he is not a frontline option for United, as he was rarely selected by ten Hag or Amorim, although part of that has been down to his recent struggles with injuries.

As you can see in the table below, Lindelof remained relatively injury-free, with no long-term absences, in his first years at the club, but he has missed a whopping 37 matches since the start of last term.

Lindelof, who has made 270 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils, has not been reliable enough in terms of his availability in the last two seasons, which has also led to him being on the fringes of the squad.

Therefore, Amorim must allow the experienced central defender to move on from Old Trafford in the summer when his contract expires, but he is not the only player who must be ruthlessly let go.

Argentina international Alejandro Garnacho is another dud who the former Sporting manager must cash in on when the summer transfer window opens for business.

Why Alejandro Garnacho should be sold

Firstly, there was reported interest from several clubs in the January transfer window, including Napoli, Chelsea, Juventus, and Atletico Madrid.

This suggests that there are plenty of teams who would be willing to do business with United if they decided to sell Garnacho when the next window opens up, rather than it being a case of the Red Devils needing to find a team to take the player off their hands.

The 20-year-old dynamo has had some terrific moments in a United shirt, as shown in the clips above, but his regression in the current campaign is a cause for concern with his decision to walk down the tunnel after being substituted against Ipswich last week undoubtedly the nadir of his career so far.

It was a moment that displeased some, including Man United writer Alex Turk, who suggested that the youngster needed to “grow up a little.”

So, with Garnacho (£50k-per-week) reportedly earning more than teammates Patrick Dorgu (£40k-per-week) and Kobbie Mainoo (£20k-per-week) his declining performances on the pitch suggest that the club should certinaly look to cash in on him before they look to increase his wages.

As you can see in the table above, the academy graduate’s output in the final third in the Premier League has decreased this season, with more ‘big chances’ missed per 90, fewer goals, and fewer assists and key passes per 90.

This, essentially, means that the United youngster is not offering as much as he did in the 2023/24 campaign as a difference-maker in front of goal, which has made him less and less effective on the pitch.

These statistics show that Garnacho, who missed two ‘big chances’ in the loss to Fulham on penalties, is trending downwards and United should look to extract the maximum out of his current value, amid interest from a host of teams.
