AC Milan plotting Nottingham Forest transfer raid for £40,000-p/w defender

AC Milan are now the latest team to be plotting a move for a Nottingham Forest mainstay, according to a recent report. It has been an impressive 2024/25 season for the Reds so far, as they have 13 points from a possible 24, losing just one of their opening eight league games. Nuno Espirito Santo has put together a strong squad that has players who are really impressing, leading to interest from around Europe.

Forest will be looking to continue this good start to the season for much longer, and even though their players are performing very well, the Reds already have their eye on potential transfers in the near future.

Last week, Forest were linked with a move for winger Rayan, as they are prepared to battle fellow Premier League side West Ham to win his signature. Vasco de Gama are ready to sell the player for as little as £8.5m in the New Year, and that has alerted Forest as well as other top flight teams.

As well as eyeing a deal for Rayan, Nuno’s side could potentially be plotting a transfer swoop for Jamie Bynoe-Gittens. The Reds have sent scouts to watch the Borussia Dortmund player in recent times, and they could now be preparing a move in 2025.

As Forest eye potential reinforcements, they look to have a fight on their hands when it comes to keeping one of their top performing players from this season.

AC Milan plotting Nottingham Forest transfer raid

According to AS Roma Live, relayed by Sport Witness, AC Milan have now joined the race to sign Nottingham Forest’s Ola Aina. This comes after it was reported earlier this month that Roma were keeping an eye on the defender, as they plot a £10 million move in January.

Roma are still interested in Aina, who is on a weekly wage of £40,000 at the City Ground, but now Milan are also in the hunt, as they have been watching him play for Forest this season.

Furthermore, they are looking for a replacement for Davide Calabria, as he looks set to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season, and Aina is an opportunity being “carefully monitored” by Milan’s management team. This has alerted Roma, and they may look to make a move in January to get ahead of their Italian rivals.

This all comes as Forest are looking to open talks with Aina over a new contract, who has been described as being “reliable” by analyst Ben Mattinson in the past. The 28-year-old joined Forest in the 2023 summer transfer window after spending a couple of years playing in Italy for Torino. Aina has been a key player for Forest this season, so the club will be doing all they can to secure his future beyond this campaign.

'Be competitive with all of the teams' – NYCFC have a new coach, youthful roster, $780M stadium on the way and a stable philosophy the MLS club hopes will spawn success

With two years until their new stadium opens, the City Football Group club is focused on both the present and the future

David Lee knows what the perception is. The NYCFC sporting director is aware that the City Football Group-backed side haven't had a big name star since 2018. He knows, too, that some eyebrows were raised when a busy offseason included moving on from three key pieces.

From the outside, this appears to be a team treading water – especially with $780 million stadium set to open in 2027. Looking for a big name club in a big market looking to spend even bigger? You've come to the wrong place.

Except, that's not the plan. NYCFC, he insists, are being intentional. They want to focus on cultivating youth, getting the best out of returning players, and supplementing it all with key signings in positions that need immediate attention.

And more broadly, it all points towards long-term ambition. NYCFC insist they can finish in the top four of the Eastern Conference this year, while also competing for trophies outside of MLS. The goal here is sustainability. This team insists that they have all of the right pieces in place.

"I think what we've tried to do – and what we've been asked to do, what we've been asked as a football club – is to build a team that can compete for trophies as often as possible, and to do that in a financially responsible way for our business," Lee told GOAL.

Getty Images Sport'I'm not sure if there's pressure'

In December 2018, David Villa walked out of the training ground for NYCFC for the last time. He had been a fine servant to the club across his four years in New York. A 2016 MLS MVP, four-time All-Star, and top all-time club goalscorer – it was hard to ask more of a player who had spent the majority of his career tearing up the Spanish top flight. Since then, though New York has looked a markedly different squad. This was once a club of Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo, later managed by Arsenal legend Patrick Viera. It all looked rather glitzy.

Now, though, there are no more stars in New York – at least, not in the traditional sense. Instead, money has been spent on the kind of signings that move the needle in MLS, but might not sell shirts worldwide. Maxi Moralez, Santi Rodriguez and Taty Castellanos have all, at various points, been crucial for the club, Lee argued.

"I think Max is a star. I think Taty is a star. Santi Rodriguez is a star. But we haven't had a star name in terms of the global, European lens of what that looks like since 2018. So it's been quite a while," Lee said.

In that time, though, NYCFC have developed something far more sustainable. They have only failed to make the playoffs twice. Their business has been smart, as looking outside American borders has served them well. They won MLS cup in 2021, a value-for-money South American star scoring the goal that got them there. But even that player, Talles Magno, admitted that this was by no means an easy league.

"A problem was that I left Vasco da Gama with the idea that the MLS was not so strong, but it was totally different from what I had expected," Magno told ESPN. "I thought I'd be in the first team, and be one of the best, but everyone was faster than me. It was a shock for me. I had to work hard to develop this. The game there is quicker than in Brazil, the ball circulates faster and the teams are more compact, one player close to the other, with a lot of physical contact. It's more like Europe than Brazil."

Advertisementfradi.hu'Experience winning and winning regularly'

In that light, then, the hiring of Pascal Jansen makes plenty of sense. The former Ferencvaros manager has been pursued by City Football Group in some capacity for almost 10 years. The global football network, that has 13 clubs on six continents, first initiated contact as early as 2015. And they have remained in talks.

"We've been in conversation ever since, not on a monthly basis, but now and then, and once New York was really interested in investigating if I would be interested to come this way, it became more intense," Jansen told GOAL.

In Jansen, they believe they have the right man. He has been on the New York radar for some time due to his intensity and playing style. Top to bottom, Lee thinks he's a perfect fit for the club.

"We want to be a team that creates lots of chances, to be entertaining," Lee said. "We're here to provide something for the fans that they want to come and watch. And we want to control the game in possession. If we don't have possession, and we've got to try and win possession back as quickly as we can. So, on a very philosophical level, that's the highest sort of points that we can go to."

There is also the appeal of being a winner. Jansen won more than 50 percent of his games for AZ. Hungarian side Ferencvaros were clear title contenders when he left the post in December.

"We wanted to find a head coach who had experience winning and winning regularly, because I think we've got a group that we're really excited about, and what we feel like is a base of a really talented group," Lee said. "And so it was important for us that he's got 200 games behind him, and is highly experienced."

IMAGN'I really don't mind if it's a guy who's 16, 17 or 37'

He will approach this all with an interesting squad. NYCFC were among the youngest teams in MLS last year. In sending James Sands to St. Pauli and Jovan Mijatovic to Belgian side Oud-Heverlee, they have gotten even younger. But simultaneously, key pieces all over the pitch have been retained. Players that accounted for more than 80 percent of the minutes last season are still in the squad. NYCFC believe that they have a group that can grow together.

"What we don't want to do is sign players that sort of block somebody's pathway from earning those opportunities," Lee said.

Jansen has bought into that from day one. He made it clear to Lee that he wanted to work with the group he had immediately before jumping to any conclusions about transfer business. He didn't want to hear about any options, in fact, until he had taken training.

"The first meeting we had in New York – and we were presenting some of the options we were looking at – and, his first reaction was 'I'd really like to train the group, if that's possible," Lee said. "I've seen you play a lot, I think I know what I've got, but it's very different till you actually get in the middle of a training session."

It is that kind of philosophy that has served NYCFC well in recent years. Starting goalkeeper Matt Freese, for one, was an afterthought two years ago. Now he is among the best in MLS, and knocking on the door for the national team. Jansen has embodied that in previous roles. He started his career working for PSV's youth teams, and, historically, has been willing to give young players a chance to thrive.

"I really don't mind if it's a guy who's 16, 17 or 37," Jansen said. "You will be held accountable for whatever is expected from you. So that, in my approach, has helped me create a lot of clarity in how we work and how we understand each other."

NYCFCThe future

NYCFC's roster is yet to be filled out, Lee emphasized. There is still room for something to happen here, and with the transfer window open until April, there is always a chance that they could strike if the right deal shows up.

"if there's a global superstar that becomes available, and we think is interesting and makes sense from both a football and a business perspective, then we should pursue it," Lee said. "And you know, those opportunities we don't think of have fell right into our hands right now."

Meanwhile, Jansen has been going about preseason diligently. He has been surprised by how difficult the team has found his intense fitness regime, he said, but is starting to see signs of a side that he believes can compete in MLS.

The key here, he admitted, is consistency. New York ran hot and cold last year – something that ultimately cost them over the course of the campaign. A bit more of that and New York expects to be among the top four of the Eastern Conference. Getting there means a focus on the basic things.

"What I just focus on is making sure that I get my ideas, the jobs that I require on field and off field, and the responsibilities that come along with it, to make them really crystal clear," Jansen said. "So what I've introduced working with my boys now is also shared responsibility and taking accountability."

Where, exactly, those principles take NYCFC remains to be seen. This is a team operating shrewdly in a big market – something fairly unique in the scope of not only MLS but also in American sports culture. But it seems the pieces might just be aligned for a future that unites both stability and success.

"And that is one of the things that drives us every day, to be competitive with all the teams, in order to compete for what we're looking for: top four and competing for a trophy," Jansen said.

Nottingham Forest wanted to sign 66-cap star but preferred Gibbs-White

Nottingham Forest currently sit 11th in the Premier League, having won two, drawn three and only lost one of their opening six games.

Nuno Esposito Santo’s side are averaging 40.2% possession, the third worst in the league this season, only scoring six goals’ the fourth worst in the division.

The Reds have had to rely on Chris Wood for three of their six goals, the other three coming from Callum Hudson-Odoi, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Ramon Sosa.

Despite having some really exciting attacking players, such as Gibbs-White, Hudson-Odoi, and Anthony Elanga, Forest are struggling in attack. However, back in 2022 they nearly signed a midfielder that could have improved just that.

Morgan Gibbs-White's time at Forest

Nottingham Forest signed Gibbs-White two and a bit years ago for a fee of around £25m initially, plus a further £17.5m available in performance-related add-ons.

Since joining the club, the Englishman has made 85 appearances, scoring 12 goals, providing 18 assists, and totalling 7,113 minutes played.

The 24-year-old has started well this season too, scoring one goal in his five games, but also creating plenty of chances for his teammates, which haven’t been converted.

Gibbs-White also earned his first England cap this season, coming from the bench against Ireland in the most recent Nations League games.

Morgan Gibbs-White celebrates for Nottingham Forest

But it turns out, Steve Cooper was also interested in another midfielder back in that summer 2022 window, which could have scuppered the plans and development for Gibbs-White.

When Forest wanted to sign Ruslan Malinovskyi

According to reports in Italy at the time, both West Ham and Nottingham Forest were interested in Ruslan Malinovskyi during the summer transfer window of 2022.

Described as an “animal” by Fernando Evangelio in 2020, the 66-cap international is now playing for Genoa and would have no doubt been a useful signing. A better move than Gibbs-White, however? Unlikely.

At the time, Malinovskyi was playing for Atalanta, the club he made his most appearances (143), scoring 30 goals and providing 28 assists, across 7,019 minutes.

As you can see from the stats, at the time, Malinovskyi was performing at a higher level, making more progressive carries and passes per 90, scoring more goals per 90, taking more shots, and putting in more defensive actions.

Gibbs-White did play a host of different positions in that season for Forest, playing 24 games as an attacking midfielder, eight games as a centre-forward, three as a right-winger, three as a left-winger, and one as a deeper midfielder, so this could have affected his metrics too.

Either way, Forest will be happy with their decision, as Gibbs-White is still only 24-years-old and is continuing to go from strength to strength, now valued at £33.5m by Transfermarkt, the highest he has been valued in his career so far.

Meanwhile, Malinovskyi is now 31-years-old, and only valued at £6.7m by Transfermarkt, which shows that even though it could have had a minor gain for Forest at the time in the 2022/23 season, putting their faith in the younger and higher ceiling Gibbs-White was the right decision after all.

Watch out Livramento: Newcastle can send Trippier packing with £25m target

Kieran Trippier has been an excellent addition for Newcastle United following his £12m move to the club from Atlético Madrid back in January 2022.

He’s provided quality and experience to Eddie Howe’s backline, playing a crucial role in the club’s recent success that has seen them qualify for the Champions League for the first time in over two decades, having notably been hailed a "revelation" by talkSPORT's Simon Jordan.

However, with the England international now 33, he’s coming towards the tail end of his professional career, as demonstrated by his failure to appear off the bench against Southampton in the first Premier League outing of the season last weekend.

Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier.

He’s since been linked with a move to Everton ahead of the transfer deadline next Friday, with the Toffees eyeing a loan move for the right-back.

His lack of game time could hand one other first-team member a consistent run as a starter after a stop-start beginning to his Magpies career.

Tino Livramento’s Newcastle career so far

Full-back Tino Livramento only arrived at St James’ Park last summer in a £40m deal from Southampton after the Saints suffered relegation to the Championship at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

His first full season on Tyneside was an inconsistent one, only making 12 starts in the Premier League, utilised as a backup to Trippier or as cover in an unnatural left-back role.

However, he started the opening day victory against his former side last Saturday, with Howe giving him the opportunity to stake his claim for a regular starting role – especially after the latest development on Trippier’s future.

The youngster was part of the backline that kept a clean sheet, whilst winning all 100% of the tackles that he entered and winning 60% of his ground duels.

Despite his impressive display, he could find himself as a backup once more if the club complete a deal for one player who’s recently impressed in the Premier League.

Newcastle could land £25m Trippier replacement

This summer has been a relatively quiet one for Newcastle, with only four new signings, but given Trippier’s current situation, they may be forced to make a late move in the transfer window.

The Magpies have previously been touted with a move to land Nottingham Forest right-back Neco Williams, with the Reds demanding a fee in the region of £25m to part ways with the Welsh international.

23-year-old Williams has been a key player under Nuno Espírito Santo since his appointment back in December, winning three consecutive Player of the Month awards, potentially forcing Livramento to return to the substitutes bench.

When comparing the duo’s respective stats from last season, the former Liverpool ace comes out on top in various key areas – highlighting what an excellent addition he would be for Howe’s side.

The “relentless” Forest ace, as described by football writer Leanne Prescott, attempted more tackles per 90 along with 2.4 blocks – showcasing his excellent defensive capabilities.

However, Williams was just as impressive going forward, completing more take-ons per 90, whilst also attempting more crosses, potentially falling straight into the hands of star man Alexander Isak.

Whilst Livramento undoubtedly has the ability to be the club’s starting right-back, Williams has demonstrated he has all the qualities to displace the Englishman on Tyneside.

£25m in today's market is a bargain for a player of his quality, with Howe's side needing to act quickly to secure a deal for the Welshman before the transfer deadline in just seven days' time.

Craig Overton takes timely four-for as Gloucestershire, Somerset draw

The weather forecast is bleak beyond contention yet the cricketers are still practising in their morning nets. Most days in the summer and many in the winter you will find them there or indoors, preparing not merely for the next few hours but for the next game, the next week, the next season. They say Tom Graveney had a net every day of the season; an artist ensuring he could still draw a perfect circle. And here are Graveney’s heirs on a ground he once called home. One feels strangely honoured to watch them on this dull Sunday morning when there’s not a hope in hell of three sessions’ play…But it was not just professionalism and a hard-earned distrust of meteorology that informed the players’ warm-ups at the County Ground. There remains every chance that both these counties will qualify for Division One of the County Championship in late summer. If so, they will not meet again in another West Country derby but will play only the other four teams in the top division. However, they will carry through half the number of points they gained in the two matches they have played against each other in the conference stage. This meant that when Craig Overton pinned Tom Smith with the seventh ball of the day the bonus point Somerset gained for taking three wickets will be worth half a point at the sharp end of the summer, always provided, of course, that Gloucestershire also qualify for the top division. And Somerset’s bowlers were not finished. Two balls after Smith departed Tom Lace was strangled down the leg side, which, to judge from his reaction, was more or less what the former Middlesex batsman would have liked to have done to Steve O’Shaughnessy the instant he saw the finger go up. Next over Kraigg Brathwaite clipped Josh Davey very low to short midwicket where Tom Abell took a good catch to his left. The trap could not have been more obvious had Somerset’s captain carried a large sign round his neck with the words: “This is a trap” written upon it. Baldrick would probably have considered the ruse beneath his dignity. Either way, Gloucestershire were 21 for 5, Somerset needed one more wicket for another point and nobody needed to visit the moral maze to guess which team welcomed the rain that began a few minutes later.Related

In truth they were the lightest showers, psiloi compared to the hoplites that rolled in later. The umpires went out to the talk to the ground staff, although maybe O’Shaughnessy was just keeping out of Lace’s way, and cricket began again at noon. Only eight balls could be squeezed into this session but even they were significant. Ian Cockbain played on to the last of them, thus giving Somerset their fifth bonus point of the match and Overton his fourth wicket with the new ball, a fact that Chris Silverwood will have noted with interest. There was little to detain any of us thereafter. An early lunch was called and the abandonment was announced at 3.10. Having beaten Somerset at Taunton, Chris Dent’s side will take 16 points into Division One compared with their opponents’ 9.5, always providing both teams get that far.But a very wet game did produce one undisputed victor: Gloucestershire have not just accommodated spectators on these extraordinary days; they have made them welcome and that warmth has extended to the media and the rest of cricket’s caravan. Any necessary regulation has been light touch and enforced with the greatest good humour. As much as the spectators who turned up to watch the match, the Gloucestershire staff who made it possible for them to do so are a credit to the game.
