Ipswich could axe Hutchinson with January move for "unique" PL star

Ipswich Town will already be pondering what moves to make this coming January, praying that some deals in through the door during the transfer window could steer the Tractor Boys away from the relegation drop-zone in the Premier League.

Until then, however, Kieran McKenna will be tasked with picking his troops up from off the floor after a sobering 4-1 defeat to West Ham United last time out, as Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus toyed with the away side in the humbling demolition job.

Omari Hutchinson will know he needs to up his performances moving forward, to remain in his manager’s good books, after struggling throughout the one-sided contest at the London Stadium.

Hutchinson's performance vs West Ham

The former Chelsea youngster would have a quiet afternoon away at the Hammers, with no end product present in the 20-year-old’s game, away from some slaloming runs attempting to unlock the home side’s defence.

Hutchinson would fail to register a single shot on the home side’s goal during the 4-1 win in favour of the hosts, whilst also failing to deliver a single accurate cross into the box from two attempts, as the flashy attacker failed in his mission to breach Julen Lopetegui’s men time after time.

The 20-year-old, much like some of his other flustered teammates, has seemingly struggled with the gigantic step-up in quality, with zero goals coming his way from seven Premier League contests to date.

In stark contrast, when starring in the league below week in week out last season, Hutchinson would score an impressive ten strikes from 44 games, playing a key role in McKenna’s side unbelievably sealing promotion up to the elite division.

Long gone are the days now when the Tractor Boys number 18 would hammer home goals like this to send the Portman Road masses into raptures, with McKenna perhaps tempted to revisit this deal in January to boost his side’s attacking midfield numbers away from the former Chelsea man.

The transfer Ipswich could look to revisit

Back in the summer, the newly promoted outfit were linked with an ever-growing list of exciting faces, as the Ipswich boss went about adding in sprinkles of quality here and there to ensure his side took to the step-up well.

There might well be a regret on the Suffolk side’s end now that they didn’t try and tie up a deal for Miguel Almiron to join from Newcastle United, who is undeniably experienced at the level, having been reportedly been interested in his services back in May, as per TEAMTalk.

Although it does look as if the Paraguayan’s time at St James’ Park is coming to a natural end now – with the same outlet more recently reporting that a January exit looks in store – the table above shows how much of an asset he has been to the Magpies in the Premier League over the last couple of seasons, with a stunning 11 goals picked up during the 2022/23 campaign.

Last year, Howe would go out of his way to wax lyrical about Almiron – even when his form wasn’t blowing the league away – describing the South American attacker as “unique”, with the 30-year-old clearly very highly thought of.

Almiron could well have even struck up an electric relationship up top with Liam Delap if the pair had managed to link up with each other at Portman Road, with the raw former Manchester City striker netting an impressive four goals from seven league games, even as his team struggles like they did away at the London Stadium.

Newcastle United forward Miguel Almiron.

Adding in the 30-year-old could also have meant McKenna was less reliant on having to play Hutchinson in a number ten role behind the lone Delap, with the former Manchester United coach turned Tractor Boys icon then pushing the ex-Chelsea attacker back to the flanks or onto the bench.

Almiron would then tussle it out with Conor Chaplin to the rights over that main attacking midfield spot, with plenty of positives to latch onto if a deal had been successful.

There could be a chance still that this move is reignited in January, with Almiron looking to be heading for the exit door soon in Tyneside, as McKenna attempts to boost his relegation-threatened side with some new welcome additions shortly.

Ipswich wanted to sign "amazing" PL forward, they got Delap instead

Ipswich Town will be relieved that they snapped up Liam Delap now.

Ultra-positive Birmingham Phoenix go head-to-head against fast-finishing Southern Brave

Big picture

In case anyone thinks that players involved in the Hundred are only interested in the gravy train, they need only look at Liam Livingstone’s celebration after he swung Matt Fisher away for six to seal Birmingham Phoenix’s place in Saturday’s final: screaming, punching the air and yelling “come on!” before embracing his team-mate Tom Abell. There were raised eyebrows when Phoenix used their first pick in the Hundred’s inaugural draft on Livingstone, after the seven other teams had gone with high-profile overseas players, but he has made his doubters look silly, leading the competition in both runs and sixes. “It was obviously a big move to pick me up,” he said. “It’s nice to repay that faith they had in me.”Phoenix started the season slowly, squeezing past London Spirit in their opening game and then losing their next two, but won three high-scoring games on the bounce at Edgbaston and then sealed top spot with back-to-back victories in their last two group games, with Livingstone standing in as captain after Moeen Ali’s recall to the England side for the second Test against India.Moeen is back with the squad in the gap between the second and third Tests, a significant boost given his form with the bat in the six games he played: “We’re adding a world-class captain, a world-class batter and a world-class bowler,” Livingstone said. The pair are key in the middle phase of the innings, particularly with the bat but also with the ball. But Phoenix’s success has not been down to that pair alone. Will Smeed, the 19-year-old Somerset batter, has been a revelation as an opener, while Chris Benjamin, a 22-year-old keeper-batter who made his T20 debut the week the Hundred started, has been a key late-order hitter. They have been ultra-positive with the bat, to the extent that they are the fastest-scoring team in all three phases of the game (Powerplay, middle, death). With the ball, Adam Milne has been the standout, hitting speeds of 94mph/151kph and excelling both in the Powerplay and at the death. He is the most miserly bowler in the competition in terms of economy rate, closely followed by the self-titled “fast spinner” Benny Howell, who has backed up his remarkable Blast record for Gloucestershire by squeezing teams through the middle of an innings in tandem with the ebullient Imran Tahir. They play Southern Brave at Lord’s, whose captain James Vince admitted after Friday night’s eliminator that he hadn’t had the chance to plan for Saturday’s game but will doubtless be cramming into the small hours following a celebratory beer. It is hard to believe things can go quite as smoothly for them as they did against Trent Rockets; George Garton and Craig Overton effectively killed the game off inside the Powerplay before Chris Jordan and Tymal Mills got to work at the death, and Vince himself found the ideal tempo in a straightforward chase.Brave started the season with consecutive defeats – Mahela Jayawardene, their head coach and a notorious slow-starter at Mumbai Indians, joked with the players that they had kept up his 100% losing record in opening games – but have won six on the bounce after squeezing past Phoenix in their first home fixture.Their pace attack has been the key to their success, but Jake Lintott – the left-arm wristspinner and their wildcard pick after the Blast’s group stages – has been a star in the middle of the innings. His match-up against Livingstone and Moeen, both superb hitters of spin, could be where the game is won and lost. The elephant in the room is a poor weather forecast, which threatens to reduce both men’s and women’s finals to 25-ball-a-side matches. The ECB clarified on Friday night that they will look to ensure the finals are completed on Saturday rather than extending them into a reserve day, but with rain likely to fall throughout the afternoon in north London, there is every chance of a shortened game.

In the spotlight

Imran Tahir provided the Hundred with arguably its viral moment of the group stages when his hat-trick saw off Welsh Fire at Edgbaston. His passion for the game is undimmed even at 42, but he will have a major role when bowling to James Vince and Quinton de Kock in particular, both of whom have treated legspin with disdain in the tournament to date. With Jofra Archer missing the tournament through injury, Tymal Mills has been pitching his T20 World Cup case through the Hundred and it looks increasingly likely that he will be on the plane to the UAE after getting through the tournament without an injury, hitting speeds of 91mph/147kph, and being miserly at the death. Every game at this late stage is an opportunity to remind England of his worth, not least with the pressure of a major final at Lord’s thrown into the mix.Liam Livingstone leads the tournament charts for runs and sixes•Getty Images

Team news

Phoenix welcome Moeen back into the squad following England Test duty but are without Finn Allen, who has consistently got them off to flying starts in the Powerplay but has flown to Bangladesh for New Zealand’s T20I series. He is replaced in the squad by David Bedingham, Durham’s South African batter, but they may opt to leave him out with Tom Abell fit again. Moeen’s return and Livingstone’s success with the ball means they can afford to leave out the third seamer if they wish.Phoenix: (possible) 1 Will Smeed, 2 Miles Hammond/David Bedingham, 3 Moeen Ali (capt), 4 Liam Livingstone, 5 Tom Abell, 6 Chris Benjamin (wk), 7 Benny Howell, 8 Adam Milne, 9 Dillon Pennington, 10 Tom Helm/Pat Brown, 11 Imran TahirSouthern Brave left Danny Briggs out in the eliminator after looking at the pitch at The Oval and seeing some extra grass on the surface; Craig Overton was picked in his place and is likely to keep his spot given the forecast and the short square boundaries at Lord’s. Tim David, the Singaporean finisher, did not bat or bowl on Friday night after replacing Colin de Grandhomme, who has left to Bangladesh on New Zealand duty.Brave: (possible) 1 Paul Stirling, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 James Vince (capt), 4 Alex Davies, 5 Tim David, 6 Ross Whiteley, 7 George Garton, 8 Chris Jordan, 9 Craig Overton/Danny Briggs, 10 Tymal Mills, 11 Jake Lintott

Stats and trivia

  • Despite playing half of their games on excellent batting pitches at Edgbaston, Phoenix have the two most economical bowlers in the competition out of bowlers to have bowled more than 100 balls: Adam Milne (1.05 per ball) and Benny Howell (1.13).
  • The two batters with the highest strike rates in the tournament will open for their respective teams on Saturday, Phoenix’s Will Smeed (182.22) edging out Brave’s Quinton de Kock (177.27).
  • This is the first domestic final at Lord’s since May 2019, when Somerset – captained by Phoenix’s Abell – saw off Hampshire to win the Royal London Cup.
  • Phoenix finished top of the group stage despite making the lowest team total in the competition when they were bowled out for 87 by Manchester Originals.
  • Brave edged Phoenix out in their group stage meeting, winning by four wickets with three balls to spare in the first game of their six-match winning streak.

Arsenal star was once "like Dennis Bergkamp", then Arteta sold him

Bukayo Saka is Arsenal’s attacking linchpin, having risen from the lower levels of Hale End to establish himself as one of football’s biggest talents.

Mikel Arteta deserves so much praise for resurrecting the Emirates Stadium and putting Arsenal back in contention for the biggest prizes in the game, though you can’t help but feel that had Saka not emerged, things wouldn’t have fallen into place just so.

Hailed as “one of the best players in the Premier League” by Plymouth Argyle manager Wayne Rooney, the England star has already scored a goal and posted four assists from as many matches in the Premier League this season as the Gunners aim to topple Manchester City on the throne.

Saka, aged 23, is one of the finest players to emerge from Arsenal’s academy, but he’s not the only one to make his mark under Arteta’s wing.

Indeed, there was a fellow north Londoner who, not too long ago, carried the same prodigious potential as his friend, but Emile Smith Rowe no longer plays for Arsenal and dreams of becoming a superstar under Arteta’s guidance have faded away.

What was once said about Emile Smith Rowe

Smith Rowe, 24, made his senior debut for Arsenal at home in the Europa League against Vorskla Poltava in September 2018, scarcely one month into his 18th year. Incidentally, Saka also made his debut against the Ukrainian side, though his debut arrived two months later in the away fixture of the group phase.

kalvin-phillips-emile-smith-rowe-west-ham-opinion

A versatile, creative and cultured attacking midfielder, Smith Rowe has featured across a range of roles but is at his multi-talented best when deployed as a roaming number ten.

Blessed with crisp technical qualities and sharp intelligence, the Englishman was regarded as a playmaker who could have bloomed into the focal creative role in north London, even being praised by pundit Jamie Carragher in the past as the “best player in the league running with the ball at his feet”.

Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith-Rowe.

Arsenal’s resurgence of the past several years was swept forward by a tide of improvements. The transfer strategy was streamlined and the Spanish manager’s tactics dovetailed into the overarching vision. Now, Arsenal have finished second across the past two Premier League campaigns and pushed Pep Guardiola’s City to the brink on both occasions.

Smith Rowe, sadly, played nothing more than a bit-part role, with his glittering beginnings dulled by injuries and Arteta’s stylistic preferences, this latter issue had arisen from his fitness struggles, in fairness, precluding him from building the form and fluency to play a starring part.

The 2021/22 campaign was a year of significant strides for Arsenal. It ended in misery as a late-season slump pulled the club away from a top-four finish and handed Champions League football to arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur, but it was clear that something was being built.

Smith Rowe was instrumental, scoring ten top-flight goals and leading Danny Cowley, who coached him while on loan at Huddersfield Town, to remark that he “has potential to be world-class” and is “like Dennis Bergkamp but with pace”.

Having earned the nickname ‘the Croydon [Kevin] De Bruyne’ in his home borough, you’d have a decent understanding of the player’s quality without actually watching him play. But you must. It’s an artistic pleasure.

He plays with a sort of footballing poetic license, not stuck in one role but performing with unfettered freedom, gliding past defenders and wreaking chaos with sharp shooting and silky passing.

He carried the No. 10 embossed on the back of his shirt, like Bergkamp, one of his heroes. The retired Dutch maestro is one of the Premier League’s finest-ever forwards. A dignified and elegant player, Bergkamp’s close control and dribbling were truly first-class, capable of conjuring magical things at Highbury.

Smith Rowe will probably watch back at these past two years ruefully. He’s an immense talent and beloved by the Arsenal faithful, but he’s gained little from staying on the periphery of Arteta’s high-flying squad.

As hard as it was, selling him this summer was probably the right decision.

Smith Rowe is reborn at Fulham

The best things in life are the most difficult to let go. But Fulham paid Arsenal an initial fee of £27m, rising to £34m with add-ons, for the one-cap England international. The Gunners’ club-record sale – ever – is the £35m transfer of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to Liverpool in 2017.

And now he’s flying. Smith Rowe has only played five matches for the Cottagers in the Premier League so far but he’s scored twice and assisted another.

As per Sofascore, he’s completed 91% of his passes in the Premier League this term, also averaging 0.8 interceptions and 1.8 tackles per game, emphasising that technical skill and tenacity.

Will Arsenal ever see their former prospect playing at the Emirates in red once again? Who knows, but he has been promising throughout the opening weeks of the 2024/25 campaign and will only improve as the matches go by, building form and fluidness under Marco Silva.

Given that the club recouped some £27m for his sale despite having scarcely enjoyed his ability over the past few years, it can only be regarded as a successful move.

But Bergkamp 2.0 once promised so much, looked to be the future superstar at the nucleus of Arteta’s project. Given the regard Arsenal fans hold him in, there will be plenty of hope from north London that he reaches that lofty level, even if it’s not on the grass that the outfit had hoped for.

Arteta must axe 4/10 Arsenal ace earning as much as Raya & Gabriel combined

It’s time the experience ace moves on.

Imagine him & Salah: Liverpool must drop Jota to unleash "unstoppable" gem

Liverpool are purring under Arne Slot, who has inherited a top-class team and all that but is instilling his vision with expertly worked dispatch.

Against Ipswich Town, the newly-blooded style demonstrated its adaptability; against Brentford, at Anfield, Slot’s controlled approach was discernible; against Manchester United, Old Trafford was squashed and the Reds started to look like a genuine force.

Nottingham Forest are up next, headed to Merseyside as they look to preserve their unbeaten record to start the campaign – a win and two draws – they will face one of their toughest tests against Slot’s Liverpool, who are hungry to extend their perfect start.

Liverpool team news

Harvey Elliott will play no part in the coming run of fixtures after fracturing his foot with England U21s this week. The 21-year-old has scarcely featured yet this term but was expected to step up with the fixtures coming thick and fast.

That aside, positivity. Alexis Mac Allister completed a full session of training on Thursday and is in contention after a fitness concern with Argentina last week. Moreover, Curtis Jones has made his recovery and will be hoping to start.

Federico Chiesa could be involved for the first time after signing from Juventus in a deal worth £12.5m last month, but he may not be thrown right into the starting mix. Despite his probable start on the bench, Slot might want to consider dropping Diogo Jota for the first time this season.

Why Liverpool should drop Diogo Jota

Jota has started all three of Liverpool’s opening matches under Slot and has scored one goal and claimed one assist. He played a crucial role against Man United before the break, working tirelessly and prodding the backline to allow the likes of Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah to capitalise, but it wasn’t his finest showing by any stretch.

Jota failed to complete each of his five attempted dribbles against the Red Devils while also losing all ten of his contested duels. It was a display that underscored the depth of Liverpool’s attacking talent, and that the Portuguese is not immovable at number nine.

And anyway, his injury record leaves plenty to be desired. Jota must be handled deftly, especially when considering the forthcoming sprint of fixtures, as they do not want to overwork him and end up without the forward for a period of time due to injury.

Cody Gakpo will hope for his first starting berth of the season, but it is Darwin Nunez who should get the nod this time. The dynamic striker has a good record against today’s opponents and has the skills to succeed at the front of Slot’s system.

Slot must unleash Darwin Nunez

Nunez scored 18 goals and claimed 13 assists across all competitions last year, though he continued to ebb and flow from the expected fluency, with his inconsistent performances in the final third.

He’s got a myriad of weapons to hurt opponents but comes up short too often. He’s wasteful and erratic. He’s also brilliant, heralded as Liverpool’s “agent of chaos” by many – as relayed by journalist Theo Squires.

Nunez’s lack of growth across his two campaigns in the Premier League marks the crux of the problem, for he has yet to lift his underlying numbers and is still just as profligate, if not more so. He missed 27 big chances last year despite only scoring 11 times, which simply isn’t good enough.

However, the electric Nunez scored home and away against the Tricky Trees last year and will be confident that a starting berth could extend that hot streak, especially after the manner of his contribution in the City Ground fixture earlier in 2024.

He’s only featured off the bench this year but Nunez could hit the ground running in this new tactical system by simply latching onto the imperious form of his side’s talisman Salah. The 32-year-old has already scored three goals and added three assists across three games for the Reds, and you wouldn’t bet against him making his mark today.

If Nunez does fail to score, should he start, he might also find his playmaking skills tuned to the Egyptian’s frequency, with ten of his 17 assists for the Merseysiders placed at Salah’s feet. This level of interchangeability could be crucial, keeping Liverpool’s adversaries guessing.

Mohamed Salah against Ipswich Town

Some of this is down to Salah’s brilliance, of course, but Nunez is a tireless forward with sharp movements and intelligent awareness. His inability to hit the mark with consistency does not nullify the expansive scope of his skillet.

Indeed, as per FBref, Nunez ranks among the top 10% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 11% for shot-creating actions, the top 17% for progressive carries, and the top 21% for tackles per 90.

That final metric is particularly interesting, highlighting a tenacious and willing approach to his defensive game, always eager to help out. Slot has a vibrant and broad range of attacking talent at his disposal, but the Uruguayan is arguably the most distinctive of players and will be hungry to showcase his unique talent.

Liverpool will be expected to defeat Forest on home soil today, but Espirito Santo’s side have shown strength of character and tactical understanding across the opening weeks, and they will not roll over for the hosts.

Forest have taken the most amount of shots in the Premier League this season with 53 – Liverpool are joint-second, with 48 – with their 21 shots on target also the most in the division. This is an early alarm bell for the Anfield side but suggests that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are apt to surge forward, and thus are susceptible on the counter. Nunez territory, that.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez

Slot would be wise to make a tweak or two, and with Jota’s injury record and recent showing in the Premier League, it’s surely the time to unleash Nunez, who was once labelled an “unstoppable” force when at his best by Jurgen Klopp, and get a taste of his style under new management.

The Uruguay international should be unleashed ahead of Jota through the middle of the pitch, with Salah and Diaz flanking him on either side.

Liverpool ace was meant to be the new Sterling, now he’s a free agent at 28

The talent has endured a rapid decline in recent years.

Talks held: Wolves could repeat Gomes masterclass with £30m "leader"

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been chucked right back into the thick of the Premier League, having lost against Arsenal in the opening game of the season, now awaiting Chelsea’s trip to Molineux on Sunday.

The forthcoming fixture will provide Pedro Neto with an early – and fleeting – homecoming after joining the Blues in a £54m deal earlier in August, with his sale potentially opening up space to make a few more signings before next weekend’s deadline.

Wolves winger Pedro Neto

Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale is being pursued to strengthen between the sticks, but Wolves might actually be keen on landing another midfielder too.

Wolves transfer news

According to TNT Sports’ Aline Nastari, Wolves are interested in signing Fluminense star Andre this month, with Manchester United also known admirers.

Fluminense midfielder Andre

An official offer has not been made but talks have been held between the Old Gold and the player’s representatives, and a late-stage bid might be forthcoming.

Fulham had held a vested interest in the Brazilian for many months, though ended their pursuit after signing Sander Berge from Burnley having been dissuaded by Fluminense’s €35m (£30m) demands.

What Andre would bring to Wolves

There’s combative, and then there’s combative. Andre loves to get busy in the centre, relishes it. Hailed as a “monster” of a player by journalist Fernando Campos, he has been essential to his outfit’s success over the past few years, winning the Copa Libertadores in 2023, bringing forceful energy and high athletic distinction.

Fluminense midfielder Andre

As per FBref, the sitting midfielder also ranks among the top 1% of midfielders across divisions similar to the Brasileiro Serie A for pass completion and the top 10% for passes attempted per 90. A high-class distributor, he would add to the intensity and fluency of Gary O’Neil’s system.

On that note, O’Neil triumphed with Wolves last season despite fading at the late stage, showcasing strategic versatility and ekeing every ounce of potential out of his robust midfielders: Joao Gomes and Mario Lemina, the latter of which saw his ground-covering numbers rise considerably.

Wolves are nicely stocked in the engine room but Lemina is 30 and out of contract at the end of the season (albeit with the option to extend for an additional year).

By all accounts, the 23-year-old has the talent to thrive in the Premier League, and he might even forge a deadly partnership with his tough-tackling countryman in the years to come, most certainly repeating the masterclass that was signing ‘the Pitbull’ from Flamengo for about £15m in January 2023.
