Nott’m Forest vs Sheff Utd: Head-to-head record, key stats & more

With the 2023/24 Premier League campaign kicking off last week, Nottingham Forest will be looking to bounce back from their opening-day defeat at Arsenal in front of their home fans this weekend.

The Reds were beaten by the Gunners on Saturday lunchtime, with Taiwo Awoniyi's consolation unable to spark a successful turnaround at the Emirates Stadium.

After gaining automatic promotion from the Championship, Sheffield United's first away trip of the season comes at the City Ground, as they seek their first points of the season after being beaten themselves by Crystal Palace.

Ahead of the clash at the City Ground, Football FanCast takes a deeper look into the previous meetings in years gone by…

Nottingham Forest vs Sheffield United: Who has the better head-to-head record?

There isn't much separating these two sides in this statistic, but Nottingham Forest just edge it.

The pair have each had their own spells of dominance in this fixture, with Sheffield United claiming 11 wins across their 16 meetings between 1925 and 1952, whilst Forest got their own back from 1963 to 1971, going unbeaten against the Blades during this period.

In recent times, the results have constantly swung back and forth, which is evinced in the stat below.

Nottingham Forest wins: 46 Draws: 32 Sheffield United wins: 44 Nottingham Forest vs Sheffield United: Who has the more wins at the City Ground?

Forest will certainly be the favourites in their first home game of the campaign. Last term, the east Midlanders won the majority of their points at the City Ground, and it was a difficult place to go to, even for some of the league's strongest teams.

Treble winners Manchester City were held to a 1-1 draw there in February, and three months later, Arsenal suffered a fatal blow in their title charge after Steve Cooper's side clinched a 1-0 victory to hand the Premier League trophy to the Citizens – whilst retaining their top-flight status in the process.

Though, Sheffield United can take some comfort in the fact that they've had their fair share of victories away at the Reds.

Nottingham Forest wins: 27 Draws: 16 Sheffield United wins: 17 Nottingham Forest vs Sheffield United: Who has the better cup record?

Sheffield United have never met the Tricky Trees in any cup competition other than the FA Cup, where they have racked up a sizable advantage in victories.

The Blades are four-time FA Cup winners in comparison to Forest's two triumphs, but they have never won the League Cup, whilst the east Midlanders have won the competition on four occasions.

But it is Paul Heckingbottom's side who tend to come out on top when they are pitted against each other in the cup, with the Blades' last victory coming en route to the FA Cup semis in 2014.

Nottingham Forest wins: 3 Draws: 3 Sheffield United wins: 8 Nottingham Forest vs Sheffield United: What were the last five meetings?

17th May 2022 – Nottingham Forest 1-2 Sheffield United: The last meeting between the pair saw Forest clinch a dramatic victory in the play-off semi-final second leg via a penalty shootout.

Brice Samba saved spot-kicks from Oliver Norwood, Conor Hourihane and Morgan Gibbs-White to send his side through to the play-off final at Wembley, where they defeated Huddersfield Town 1-0 to gain promotion to the Premier League, ending their 23-year absence from the division.

14th May 2022 – Sheffield United 1-2 Nottingham Forest: Three days prior, Forest defeated the Blades 2-1 at Bramall Lane thanks to goals from Jack Colback and Brennan Johnson, who scored his 19th goal of the campaign.

Norway international Sander Berge netted a vital stoppage-time consolation goal, which kept the tie well and truly alive going into the second leg at the City ground.

This fixture was the first time the two sides had ever faced each other in the play-offs.

4th March 2022 – Sheffield United 1-1 Nottingham Forest: Ryan Yates headed home a last-gasp equaliser to keep Forest within touching distance of the top six.

The crucial away point moved them up to eighth, two points adrift of the sixth-placed Blades, who were on the verge of moving five points ahead of their promotion-challenging rivals.

Ulitmately, Cooper's side ended the campaign in fourth on 80 points whilst Paul Heckingbottom's Sheffield United finished 5th on 75 points, setting up the aforementioned play-off semi-final clash.

2nd November 2021 – Nottingham Forest 1-1 Sheffield United: The reverse fixture produced the same result, and it was the east Midlanders again who fought back late on to salvage a point.

Morgan Gibbs-White broke the deadlock in the 78th minute for Sheffield United before Lewis Grabban levelled in the 83rd. At times, it was an 'ill-tempered' clash as the pair fought to get back into the win column.

Neither side had hit their rhythm yet, with Forest languishing in 16th at that stage, whilst the Blades sat one place above their eventual play-off rivals on goal difference.

19th April 2019 – Sheffield United 2-0 Nottingham Forest: Sheffield United moved into second place after defeating 10-man Nottingham Forest 2-0 at Bramall Lane. Chris Wilder's side went up that season, pipping Leeds United to the final automatic promotion spot.

Forest, under the stewardship of Martin O'Neill, sunk into 13th, 10 points adrift of the play-off places with three games to spare.

Who has played for Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United?

Billy Sharp (Sheffield United 2004-2005, 2007-2010, 2015-2023; Nottingham Forest 2012-13): The Championship's all-time top goalscorer spent a year on loan at Forest from Southampton during the 2012/13 season. He netted 10 league goals that year whilst laying on five assists.

Sharp made 377 appearances for boyhood club Sheffield United, scoring 129 goals whilst providing 44 assists. He was an integral part of the club's promotion to both the Championship and the Premier League.

The striker is now a free agent after being released at the end of the season. Rotherham United had been in talks to sign the 37-year-old, but if reports are to be believed, they decided to pull out due to the time it has taken him to make a decision.

David McGoldrick (Nottingham Forest 2009-2013; Sheffield United 2018-2022): The Republic of Ireland international was on Forest's books for four years. He made 73 appearances in total, scoring nine goals whilst providing five assists.

His time at Bramall Lane was far more fruitful. McGoldrick, like Sharp, was a key player during the club's return back to the Premier League, after spending 12 years outside of the division. The centre-forward racked up 42 goal contributions in 136 games for the Blades.

He now plies his trade in League Two with Notts County, who signed the forward this summer on a free transfer following a 25-goal season with League One outfit Derby County.

Oliver Burke (Nottingham Forest 2013-2016; Sheffield United 2020-2022): Burke, a Nottingham Forest academy graduate, was snapped up by RB Leipzig in 2016 for £13m after netting four goals in five games at the start of the 2016/17 Championship campaign. His time in Forest's first team was short-lived, making just 31 appearances.

He joined Sheffield United in September 2020 from West Bromwich Albion and went on to appear 36 times, which remarkably is the most amount of games he's played at a single club. The 26-year-old is now at Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen.

Adlene Guedioura (Nottingham Forest 2012-13, 2018-2019; Sheffield United 2021-2022): The 62-cap Algeria international made a century of appearances for Forest across his two spells at the club.

Contrastingly, he appeared just twice for Sheffield United across a brief four-month spell and will certainly be better known for his time in a Forest shirt.

Guedioura, 37, is currently playing his football in Qatar with Al Wakrah SC.

Ben Osborn (Nottingham Forest 2014-2019; Sheffield United 2019-present): Osborn graduated from the Nottingham Forest academy and went on to make 230 appearances for the club before sealing a Premier League move to Sheffield United in 2019.

The former England youth international has been a valuable member of the Blades' squad over the last four years and now has the chance to play in the top flight again this season.

What is Nottingham Forest's biggest win over Sheffield United?

9th October 1976 – Nottingham Forest 6-1 Sheffield United: The Tricky Trees' biggest win over Sheffield United came during Brian Clough's era, as his side annihilated the Blades thanks to goals from Viv Anderson, Terry Curran, Peter Withe, Barry Butlin and a brace netted by Ian Bowyer.

The east Midlands club gained automatic promotion that year from the second tier of English football.

What is Sheffield United's biggest win over Nottingham Forest?

3rd December 1904 – Sheffield United 4-0 Nottingham Forest: It has been well over a century since Sheffield United's biggest victory over Nottingham Forest.

John Nicholson was the club secretary back then, but often took duties associated with being a modern-day manager. Nicholson's side dispatched the Reds handsomely thanks to goals from Alonzo Drake, John Lang, Jimmy Donnelly and Arthur Brown, with the latter finishing the campaign as the division's top goalscorer after netting 23 times.

They finished in sixth place, eight points adrift of champions Newcastle United whilst Forest ended the campaign in 16th.

Nottingham Forest vs Sheffield United: Key match stats This will be the 123rd meeting between the pair The two sides will be in England's top flight simultaneously for the first time since the 1992/93 campaign Brennan Johnson has scored in his last two appearances against the Blades Morgan Gibbs-White will face his former side for the first time since departing Bramall Lane

Leeds In "Advanced Talks" To Sign "Solid" £10m Wober Heir

Leeds United are in "advanced talks" regarding a deal to bring Liverpool defender Nat Phillips to the Championship, according to reliable journalist Rudy Galetti.

Is Nat Phillips leaving Liverpool?

Phillips has been at Anfield for the past seven years after initially joining the club’s U23s on a free transfer from Bolton back in 2016, and whilst he’s been involved in the senior first team fold since, he’s failed to ever make a significantly positive impression under Jurgen Klopp.

In the Premier League last season, the centre-back was handed just one start which shows not only how low down in his manager’s pecking order he is but also the fact that he needs to think about completing a move elsewhere should he want to get regular minutes under his belt moving forward.

Read The Latest Leeds Transfer News HERE…

Whites reporter Beren Cross previously revealed that the 49ers made several enquiries for the 26-year-old earlier in the summer and remain interested in securing his signature, which isn’t surprising considering The Athletic’s Phil Hay confirmed that Daniel Farke was keen to recruit him at Norwich, and the boss appears to be taking a second bite of the cherry when it comes to landing his target.

Are Leeds signing Nat Phillips?

Taking to Twitter X, Galetti revealed that Leeds are progressing in negotiations with Liverpool over a summer swoop for Phillips which would see him make the permanent move to Elland Road. He wrote:

"Advanced talks between #LeedsUTD and #Liverpool for Nat #Phillips. The parties are discussing some details about the proposal set at £10m, add-ons included. The CB has been targeted by Leeds as one of the ideal profiles to replace #Wober, now on loan at #Gladbach."

Liverpool defender Nat Phillips.

How good is Nat Phillips?

Leeds will know that Phillips wasn’t given a fair chance to prove what he was capable of last season, but he’s more than showed what he can bring to the table when handed the rare opportunity to play having been dubbed "absolutely insane" by Jurgen Klopp, so this could be an exciting move should it come off.

The PLG client averaged two aerial wins and one tackle and interception per top-flight game during the previous campaign and was calm and composed in possession recording an 86.6% pass success rate, via WhoScored, which was higher than any of the regular starters in Yorkshire, meaning he’d be an upgrade on the boss’ current options in that sense.

Furthermore, the 6 foot 2 colossus is even capable of getting involved with the action in the final third having scored four goals and provided three assists in 99 appearances throughout his career, so being a defender that can positively impact the game at both ends of the pitch, he's the perfect profile of player to be pursuing.

Finally, Phillips has the versatility to operate at right-back alongside in the heart of the defence which would be a useful attribute to have in the building considering the long-term injury to Stuart Dallas, so this deal really is a no-brainer to complete should the financial conditions be ideal.

Liverpool Eyeing Alexis’ Dream Partner In Combative £70m Star

Liverpool are pulling no punches in their pursuit of prominence after falling flat last season and failing to qualify for the Champions League and could look to sign Crystal Palace's Cheick Doucoure to continue the summer rebuild.

Alexis Mac Allister and Dominick Szoboszlai have both been signed already after James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain departed upon the expiry of their contracts, while Jordan Henderson and Fabinho are both looking to complete moves to the Saudi Pro League.

The departure of Fabinho in particular would leave a hole in the midfield department, and Doucoure would be a worthy successor after an exemplary maiden campaign in English football that saw the Mali international secure the Eagles' Player of the Season award.

Are Liverpool interested in Cheick Doucoure?

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, speaking on the Talking Transfers podcast last week, the 23-year-old is a player that the Anfield chiefs 'love' after his strong performances in the Premier League.

He said: “Palace don’t need to sell and he’s an important player for them. From what I’m told in the [Liverpool} analytics department he’s a real highlight. They love him.”

The Daily Mail have reported that Palace have placed a £70m valuation on one of their most coveted assets, and while this is certainly a staggering sum, if Liverpool decide to push for the crème de la crème, they should head towards south London.

How good is Cheick Doucoure?

After a year of foiled ambition, Jurgen Klopp's Reds will be pushing to return to the forefront of English football and fight for the league title as opposed to scrambling – unsuccessfully – for a place in the top four.

The midfield's inability to effectively protect the backline was one of the chief reasons behind Anfield's seasonal demise, and for all the work plied on the transfer front to remedy this problem thus far, a top-class pivot is still required to knit the centre together with steel thread.

Enter Doucoure; praised as a star capable of "destroying everyone" in his path by one journalist, the £60k-per-week ace ranks among the top 3% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for interceptions, the top 19% for blocks and the top 18% for clearances per 90, as per FBref.

cheick-doucoure-liverpool-transfer-news-premier-league

A veritable machine in the midfield, Doucoure's role would consist of industriously sweeping up danger and instigating promising forward transitions, something that could bring the best out of Mac Allister, who is raring to go after his £35m move from Brighton & Hove Albion.

The 24-year-old "golden boy" – as he has been called by content creator Ryan Adsett – was immense last term, recording an average Sofascore rating of 7.21 in the English top-flight as he scored ten goals from 31 starts, averaging 2.5 shots and two tackles per game, and succeeding with 67% of his dribbles and 57% of his ground duels.

Truly an all-encompassing phenom, and one who could genuinely reignite the fire that has been missing from Liverpool's belly, but he cannot effectively ply his trade with a gaping hole in the defensive midfield behind him.

Moises Caicedo, touted with a £100m move to Chelsea, held the thriving Seagulls ship together last term and left manager Roberto De Zerbi saying that he could "become one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and in Europe."

Doucoure could emulate the impact the Ecuadorian had on Mac Allister, and Klopp must think hard about the best course of action to complete his summer revival and chart a course for success once again.

Wolves Could End Scoring Woes By Signing £12m Ace At Molineux

Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly interested in former Premier League striker Che Adams, as Julen Lopetegui bids to end his side’s struggles in front of goal.

The Spaniard will have a limited budget this summer after the revelation of the clubs’ Financial Fair Play (FFP) woes however, there is talent on the market that could bolster his team’s chances for a reasonable fee.

What’s the latest on Che Adams to Wolves?

As reported yesterday by BBC journalist Daz Hale, Wolves one of the Premier League clubs interested in Southampton forward Che Adams.

A separate report relayed by TEAMtalk last month valued the 26-year-old at £12m, with him having just one year remaining on his current contract on the south coast.

Boasting an expected valuation of £16m, as per Football Transfers, Lopetegui could land himself a bargain in a player proven to be capable of leading a line.

What could Che Adams offer to Wolves?

In a testing season that ended in relegation at St Mary’s, the Scotsman found some individual light in contributing five goals and three assists in 28 appearances for the Saints, via FBref.

Hailed as a “clever player” by Rangers legend Ally McCoist, the forward was described by the former striker turned pundit as being a “breath of fresh air” for his exploits in front of goal.

Southampton striker Che Adams.

Likened statistically via FBref to Roma forward Tammy Abraham, Adams could offer a host of strengths to Lopetegui’s side, who endured a woeful campaign in the final third last season.

With just 31 goals in 38 games, Wolves ended the term as the league’s lowest-scorers, highlighting the requirement for the Old Gold to poach a goalscorer this summer.

Having recorded a total of 118 goals and assists in 324 domestic appearances, as per Transfermarkt, the former Birmingham City striker could replenish Lopetegui’s side with a presence in front of goal.

Last season, forwards Raul Jimenez and Diego Costa contributed one Premier League goal between them in a year in which Molineux averaged just 0.82 goals per match in the league.

Averaging 0.23 goals per 90 and 2.12 shots per 90, the 26-year-old could be that prominent figure needed to see Wolves thrive once more in the top division, acting as a player that is versatile in his approach to goal.

As per FBref, the Saints forward averaged an impressive 1.08 key passes per 90 last season, showing his creative side in attack with attributes that could benefit those around him at Molineux.

It’s integral that Lopetegui recruits a goal scorer this summer, and with a chance to escape playing Championship football next term, Adams could be the perfect figure to rejuvenate the final third in the Midlands.

Burnley, Leeds United and Everton are also clubs reportedly interested in the Scotsman, with the expectation that Wolves must act fast if they are to snatch the talent this summer.

Dyche Could Land Everton Upgrade With £20k-p/w "Firework"

Everton are in need of new options in multiple positions this summer, none more so than out wide after failing to replace Anthony Gordon following his exit to Newcastle United midway through last season.

Most of those Sean Dyche does have to call upon in attack have shown they are not good enough for a team with ambitions of battling for a place in the top half of the Premier League, Demarai Gray among them.

The 26-year-old, on a reported £25,000k-a-week at Goodison Park, could be on his way out in the coming weeks, further heightening the need for an upgrade in that wide position.

According to one report, Everton are locked in talks to bring in Wilfried Gnonto from Leeds United – a player who, like Gray, is capable of playing in multiple positions across the front-line

Should Everton sign Leeds United attacker Wilfried Gnonto?

Gnonto is expected to be offered a direct route back to the Premier League following Leeds' relegation to the Championship, with Arsenal another team supposedly interested in the 19-year-old.

While Gnonto hardly ripped up the top flight last season with his two goals and four assists, it was generally considered that he deserved far more of a chance to show his worth, having started just 14 of United's 28 league games.

When the young "firework" – as described by pundit Noel Whelan – was given a run of starts around the turn of the year, the 11-cap Italy international scored four goals in the space of seven games, including an early strike in February's 2-2 draw at Manchester United.

demarai-gray-everton-premier-league-west-ham-transfers

Even when he was not on target, the £20k-per-week starlet earned praise for his performances, such as in the 2-1 loss to Aston Villa. Gary Neville, covering the game for Sky Sports, said at the time: "To see someone so mature, so young is very unusual in that position.

"Sometimes you see potential and talent but watching him so closely, his understanding of where to be, his choice of pass, when to run with it, his awareness of team-mates, really good honestly."

When breaking down Gnonto's bare figures, the Italian scored and assisted at a rate of 0.31 goals per 90 minutes last season, as per FBref, with that also taking in his handful of appearances for FC Zurich. Gray, by comparison, recorded a figure of 0.18.

The pair found the net from a similar number of shots – 0.06 for Gnonto and 0.04 for Gray – but the Leeds ace did come out on top for passes completed per 90 minutes (24.7 v 20.8) and goal-creating actions per 90 (0.47 v 0.18), with the latter taking factors such as passes and take-ons leading to goals into consideration.

Gnonto surprisingly won more aerial duels, too, 30.8% to Gray's 22.4%, despite measuring just 5 foot 7. That is not to mention his pace, recorded at 18.21mph by Speedsdb, which makes him a "very direct" option, as former Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford put it.

Leeds will not let the youngster go on the cheap as they attempt to recoup some funds following their relegation, but he has all the hallmarks of a player who can be a fan favourite at Goodison Park for a number of years to come, as well as representing a possible upgrade on Gray.
