Celtic in talks to sign "dangerous" player for Rodgers with £8m deal close

Following an excellent start to their Scottish Premiership campaign, Celtic are now reportedly seriously interested in signing a midfield reinforcement for Brendan Rodgers.

Celtic transfer news

The Bhoys couldn't have asked for a better start to their season, with six points from six as they attempt to defend their Scottish crown and secure a fourth title in a row. Meanwhile, with just nine days left until the summer transfer window slams shut, those at Celtic Park could be in for a busy week, on both the incomings and departures front.

The likes of Matt O'Riley and Kyogo Furuhashi could still depart. The former has been the subject of a number of bids from Serie A side Atalanta, who are yet to meet Cetlic's reported £25m price tag. As for Kyogo, the forward has reportedly attracted the interest of Manchester City, who have already held talks to secure his signature in an attempt to replace Julian Alvarez.

Even if O'Riley or Kyogo stay, then the door could be open for further incomings, which may see one midfielder arrive. According to Sky Sports, Celtic are in talks with LAFC over signing Mateusz Bogusz this summer, who they're reportedly seriously interested in.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder previously played for Leeds United, before earning a permanent move to LAFC in March 2023. Now, he could be on his way back to European football courtesy of Celtic, as they potentially look to replace O'Riley amid ongoing exit rumours. Reports elsewhere have even claimed that an £8m move to Parkhead is close after talks.

"Dangerous" Bogusz could replace O'Riley

Whilst he remains a Celtic player as things stand, a club could yet reach Celtic's valuation to leave them with quite the decision to make when it comes to O'Riley's future. Either way, the Bhoys must prepare for the worst case, and that should see them pursue a move to sign Bogusz in the remaining days of the summer transfer window.

Proving his goalscoring prowess at LAFC, with the ability to play as a centre forward as well as in attacking midfield, Celtic may yet gamble on whether the Pole can replicate his MLS form in the Scottish Premiership.

Former Leeds midfielder Mateusz Bogusz.

LAFC manager Steve Cherundolo praised the 22-year-old in March, saying via AS: “Since coming to LAFC we knew that he could play as an attacker. He’s sort of a ‘tweener’, he’s in between midfielder and attack. That’s exactly why he fits into our model, he can play multiple positions and he interprets each position in an attacking way and makes it his own.

“In pre-season we had him there and it takes some getting used to and the more Matty was able to stretch defences and make runs in-behind the better he is for us, the more dangerous he looks. He’ll get himself in scoring positions to get goals for us.”

Leeds showing interest in "incredible" £10,000-a-week Premier League talent

Leeds United are "showing an interest" in completing the signing of an "incredible" defender on loan this summer, according to a new transfer update.

Leeds transfer news

The new Championship season is now just a matter of days away, as Daniel Farke's side go into the campaign as one of the favourites to seal promotion to the Premier League. It has been a good summer to date at Elland Road, in terms of new signings, including Joe Rodon coming in on a permanent basis from Tottenham. They have lost Crysencio Summerville to West Ham, however, which is a massive blow.

There could still be further additions before the end of the summer transfer window, however, and NEC Nijmegen forward Sontje Hansen has been linked with sealing a switch to Leeds. He scored six goals and registered four assists in the Eredivisie last season, and at 22, is a young player with a bright future in the game.

Meanwhile, Liverpool midfielder Bobby Clark is a reported loan option for the Whites, with the 19-year-old playing his part for the Reds last season, filling in impressively when Jurgen Klopp had to deal with various injury problems. Farke could see him adding extra quality in the attacking third, bringing improved squad depth in the process.

Norwich City midfielder Gabriel Sara was also believed to be personally wanted by Farke, with the Leeds boss hopeful of snapping him up before the window reaches its conclusion, but he has now sealed a long-term move to Galatasaray.

Leeds interested in £10,000-a-week ace

According to Talking Wolves on X, Leeds are interested in signing Wolves defender Hugo Bueno this summer, with two other huge clubs also believed to be in the mix.

Bueno could be an eye-catching addition to the Whites' squad ahead of the new season, possessing Premier League experience in a Wolves shirt and making 42 appearances in the competition to date.

Still only 21, the Wanderers ace has been capped once for Spain at both Under-21 and Under-18 level, and Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs said of him last year: "Since joining us as a 16-year-old number 10, the work that Hugo and the coaches have put into changing his position, and the acceptance he had of doing that, shows what a good pro he is. To be able to get his head around a new position and develop at the rate he has was incredible."

While Bueno is primarily a left-back, he is also capable of playing in a more attack-minded wide role, with such versatility something that could be another positive for Farke.

Only seven starts came the £10,000-a-week Spaniard's way in the Premier League last season, so he could see a move to Leeds as beneficial to his development, allowing him more regular football for a side who are expected to be among the best teams in the Championship in 2024/25.

Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski was over the moon following his team's resounding 3-0 win over Brest in the Champions League on Tuesday evening as the evergreen Polish striker struck twice to become only the third player in the competition's history to score over 100 goals.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 36-year-old joined Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in elite company as the only players to have more than 100 goals in the Champions League.

Lewandowski scored in the 10th minute against the French outfit to bring up a century of goals in Europe's most prestigious club competition, and then made it 101 goals by scoring in stoppage time. However, he is still some way off catching up to Ronaldo and Messi, who have 140 and 129 goals respectively.

Lewandowski's 101 goals, though, have come in just 125 games, which makes him the player with the best goals-per-game ratio among the trio. He scored 17 goals for Borussia Dortmund, 69 for Bayern Munich, and has 15 for Barcelona. With seven goals, the Barca No. 9 is the leading goal scorer in the ongoing campaign.

  • WHAT ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI SAID

Speaking to the press after the game, Lewandowski said: “Years ago I didn’t think I would reach my 100th goal in the Champions League. It’s good to have your name next to Cristiano and Messi. I’m very happy, I didn’t think I would score this many goals in the Champions League."

    WHAT NEXT FOR BARCELONA?

With the win over Brest, Barcelona climbed to second spot in the Champions League standings. Their next game in the competition is away at Borussia Dortmund on December 11. However, they have a cause for concern domestically, as a loss against Real Sociedad and the draw against Celta Vigo last weekend sees them just four points clear of Real Madrid having played one game more. Flick's troops will face Las Palmas next on Saturday, November 30, in LaLiga.

Man Utd player ratings vs Leicester City: Van Nistelrooy's night to remember! Ruud's Red Devils run riot as Casemiro rolls back the years & Bruno Fernandes finds goal-scoring form in Carabao Cup clash

United moved on from Erik ten Hag's sacking by flying into the League Cup quarter-finals as they saw off the Foxes

It doesn't sound like Ruud van Nistelrooy is in the frame to be given the Manchester United manager's job on a full-time basis, but the former striker made an ideal start to his interim tenure as he oversaw a 5-2 Carabao Cup win over Leicester City in the club's first game since the sacking of Erik ten Hag.

After a relatively slow start, Casemiro got the goal-scoring under way as he powered a curling effort from 25 yards into the top corner. Alejandro Garnacho then doubled the Red Devils' lead as he swept home Diogo Dalot's low ball across the edge of the penalty area.

Leicester pulled one back when Bilal El Khannouss drilled a half-volley in off both posts, only for United to go up the other end and restore their two-goal lead when Bruno Fernandes netted his first of the season via a deflected free-kick. Casemiro soon added his second of the night with a close-range finish after his own header came back off both uprights, but there was still time in first-half stoppage-time for Conor Coady to get another one back for the visitors after Dalot failed to clear a free-kick into the box.

Perhaps thinking the game was already won, United started the second half slowly and found themselves on the back foot until Fernandes latched onto Caleb Okoli's under-hit back-pass and rounded Danny Ward to ensure a relatively comfortable passage into the quarter-finals for the Red Devils.

Altay Bayindir (6/10):

Poor punch led to El Khannouss' goal, but made up for it with a superb save to tip Soumare's second-half strike onto the crossbar. Did look comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Diogo Dalot (6/10):

Good run in behind to set up Garnacho's strike, but will feel he should have done better in getting rid of the cross that eventually led to Coady scoring before half-time.

Matthijs de Ligt (7/10):

A physical presence in defence as he marshalled the United backline well.

Victor Lindelof (6/10):

Recovered from a shaky early period to look comfortable on a rare start in central defence.

Lisandro Martinez (7/10):

Again utilised at left-back and stood up admirably, especially early in the second half when Justin was running wild down the Leicester right.

Manuel Ugarte (7/10):

Broke play up effectively in midfield before giving the ball to the more gifted players to cause havoc in attack.

Casemiro (9/10):

Put on an absolute clinic. Stunning strike opened the scoring and controlled his finish well for his second. Covered every blade of grass, with his only blemish a header he sent wide when he should have got his hat-trick.

Bruno Fernandes (8/10):

Fortunate to see his free-kick deflect in off Justin to open his account for the campaign, but it did give him the confidence he needed. Showed good awareness to latch onto Okoli's poor back-pass for the fifth.

Marcus Rashford (6/10):

A quiet night given the attacking success United had, but didn't do much wrong either. Given the final half-hour off.

Joshua Zirkzee (4/10):

Just doesn't look cut out for this level right now. Misplaced a number of passes and wasted good attacking opportunities with poor touches.

Alejandro Garnacho (7/10):

Got his goal early on and caused plenty of problems down the left. Perhaps needs to do more defensively as he regularly allowed Justin to get in behind him to create chances.

Noussair Mazraoui (6/10):

Solid after replacing Martinez for the final 30 minutes.

Amad Diallo (7/10):

Jonny Evans (6/10):

Gave De Ligt the final 20 minutes off.

Didn't get any sights of goal in his 20 minutes on the pitch.

Crowd capacities for India’s visit to Australia have been confirmed, ranging from 75% at the Gabba which will stage the final Test to 25% at the MCG for Boxing Day, as fans return to men’s international cricket in both Australia and New Zealand for the first time since Covid-19 took hold in March. The SCG and Canberra, which will share the limited-overs matches at the start of the tour with Sydney then hosting the New Year’s Test on January 7, will both operate at 50% of their full capacity although Cricket Australia will stagger the release of tickets to enable them to adapt to any changes. It had previously been announced that the aim was for a crowd of 25,000 at the MCG after Melbourne came out of its long Covid-19 lockdown. The exact figures for other stadiums remain to be confirmed, but it is likely to be a similar figure at the SCG, Adelaide Oval and the Gabba. Manuka Oval in Canberra will be able host around 6000 for the final ODI and first T20I.The same day as the Australia-India tour begins – November 27 – is also set to see crowds return to stadiums across the Tasman when New Zealand play West Indies, beginning with T20I series. Both Australia and New Zealand hosted winters sports with crowds since July. The first international cricket to have spectators return was the Australia-New Zealand women’s series staged in Brisbane from late September. To date, all men’s internationals since the sport resumed have been played behind closed doors – the England home season and the Pakistan-Zimbabwe series – while IPL and CPL have also been staged without crowds.Spectators have returned in the small numbers to Australian and New Zealand domestic cricket in recent weeks. There were trials during the English season with a view to getting crowds back, but they were curtailed by rising Covid numbers. It was announced by the BCCI late on Monday that Virat Kohli will leave the Australia tour following the first Test in Adelaide for paternity leave. It has yet to be confirmed whether he will return, but the need to quarantine in Australia means that would be unlikely. The India squad, along with the Australia players who have been at the IPL, are due to arrive on Thursday following the IPL final. They will quarantine at a hotel at Sydney’s Olympic Park and train with a bubble at Blacktown for two weeks, a period that finishes on the eve of the ODI series which begins at the SCG on November 27.

New target: Rodgers wants to sign £8m Premier League player for Celtic

Brendan Rodgers wants to bring a "fantastic" £8m Premier League player to Celtic this summer, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

Celtic transfer latest

The Hoops sealed yet another Scottish Premiership title last season, holding off Rangers after a tense battle, but this is a period in which the club cannot afford to rest on their laurels. Instead, strong signings need to be made, as they look to prove themselves more on the Champions League stage.

Making some loan deals permanent appears to be one of Celtic's most pressing matters in the coming weeks, as they look to get moves for Paulo Bernardo and Adam Idah over the line. The pair have impressed on loan from Benfica and Norwich City respectively, and Rodgers seemingly views them as important figures heading into the future.

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has been considered a strong option for some time, as he looks to enjoy a fresh challenge away from Anfield, and it looks as though he is still a leading contender to fill the void left by Joe Hart at Parkhead. Club chiefs are thought to be plotting a £10m move for the Republic of Ireland international, in what could be a signing of real intent.

Kelleher isn't the only option between the sticks, however, with Bayern Munich stopper Daniel Peretz seen as an option to bring in on loan. Premier League clubs are also keen on him, while legendary teammate Manuel Neuer recently hailed him after being replaced by him in a pre-organised substitution: "That was agreed upfront. We agreed if the result allows it we’ll do it. Daniel gave the team so much over the entire season. He deserved to get the minutes today. We’re all happy Dani was on the pitch today."

Celtic want "fantastic" £8m player

According to a new report from The Daily Mail, Celtic are interested in signing Bournemouth defender Chris Mepham this summer, with the 26-year-old emerging as a new target.

The Hoops have "added" the Welshman, valued at £8m, to their list of possible transfer options ahead of next season, with Rodgers considering him a good addition.

Leeds United transfer target Chris Mepham in action for Wales.

Mepham could be a really astute signing by Celtic in the summer transfer window, considering how much experience he possesses at the top level, despite still only being 26 years of age. He has racked up 36 caps for Wales, which is an impressive tally, as well as appearing 61 times in the Premier League to date.

He could immediately make the Hoops an even more formidable defensive unit, and the depth that he would add is needed, especially ahead of what is hopefully an improved Champions League campaign.

Celtic in talks to sign "brilliant" player for just £3.5m

He wants to join.

ByBen Browning Jun 6, 2024

Former manager Scott Parker once described Mepham as "fantastic", clearly valuing him greatly, and he is a player who could come in and be a huge asset for Celtic over a number of years, having averaged three aerial duel wins per game across a total of 10 Premier League appearances in 2023/24.

Arsenal chiefs now believe they’re the favourites to sign £55m "menace"

The summer transfer window officially opens for business later this month and Arsenal appear to be in the market to land a new centre-forward to bolster their squad.

Mikel Arteta ended the 2023/24 campaign with Kai Havertz as his preferred number nine, despite the former Chelsea man starting the season in a central midfield role, eventually bumping Brazil international Gabriel Jesus down the pecking order.

The German attacker ended with a respectable 13 goals and seven assists in 37 Premier League appearances for the Gunners in his first year at The Emirates.

Kai Havertz

However, his impressive form in front of goal has not been enough to prevent Edu from pursuing alternative number nine options who could come in and lead the line next term.

Decision coming soon on big Arsenal target

According to GIVEMESPORT, Arsenal believe that they are the favourites to secure a deal to sign RB Leipzig centre-forward Benjamin Sesko during the summer transfer window. The report claims that Premier League rivals Chelsea and teams from Saudi Arabia are also interested in snapping up the Slovenia international, with six clubs in the running to land his signature.

It also states that the player's representatives have indicated that they want to have a decision on his future wrapped up before the European Championships start later this week, in order to ensure that his concentration is solely on the upcoming tournament.

This means that a final call on Sesko's next club, or if he will remain with the German side, is coming over the next few days, and the Gunners seemingly believe that they are in the driving seat right now.

The 21-year-old marksman has a £55m release clause in his current contract with the Bundesliga outfit and any of the interested parties will need to activate that in order to sign him, but they may not wish to do that until the player has made his decision this week.

Why Arsenal should sign Benjamin Sesko

This latest update should come as good news to Arsenal supporters, as the Slovenian starlet could be a fantastic addition to Arteta's squad ahead of next season. The Gunners should sign the young gem as he is a ruthless finisher who could provide them with a reliable number nine, who can more than make the most of the chances are created for him.

As you can see in the table above, neither Havertz nor Jesus were among the most efficient finishers within the Arsenal squad in the Premier League this season. Meanwhile, Sesko rifled in 14 goals from an xG of 8.02 in the Bundesliga, which is an overperformance of 5.98. That would have placed him top of the list for the Gunners as the most ruthless goalscorer in the team.

Arsenal ready to make offer for £102m-rated Thomas Partey replacement

Arsenal are looking to replace Thomas Partey this summer.

ByJosh Barker Jun 10, 2024

The Leipzig star, who was hailed as a "menace" by U23 scout Antonio Mango, has showcased his potential to be incredibly efficient in front of goal, which is why he could be a fantastic signing to bolster Arteta's attack and improve the team ahead of next season.

Spurs must axe Conte signing who’s now half as valuable as Werner

Tottenham Hotspur have had mixed luck regarding transfers in recent seasons. The likes of Destiny Udogie, Micky van de Ven, Guglielmo Vicario and even James Maddison have come in and generally improved the team to varying degrees.

However, on the flipside, the club have also welcomed in players such as Emerson Royal, Giovani Lo Celso, and Tanguy Ndombele, who certainly haven't raised the bar at the club.

That said, there is one signing who first looked as if he was going to belong to the first camp before quickly making his way over to the second, and as things stand, his value has plunged to be half of Timo Werner's, which is hardly a positive sign.

Spurs forward Timo Werner

Therefore, it's time the club cut their losses and move on before his value craters further.

Yves Bissouma's Tottenham Career

The player in question is Mali international Yves Bissouma, who moved to Antonio Conte's Spurs in the summer of 2022 for a fee of around £25m after impressing at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Yves Bissouma

Unfortunately for all involved, despite his record at the Amex, the 27-year-old's first season in north London was disastrous for a couple of reasons.

First, despite signing him in the summer, it appeared as if Conte didn't trust him. In the 28 appearances he made across all competitions in 2022/23, only 12 of them were starts.

To make things even worse, halfway through the campaign, he broke his ankle and missed 17 games for club and country.

Luckily for the Issia-born ace, the former Chelsea boss was sacked before the end of the season and replaced with Ange Postecoglou in the summer.

Yves Bissouma for Tottenham

The Australian clearly had a higher opinion of the midfielder as he started him for the first eight league games of this year, but in the eighth game, he got himself sent off for diving, for which former player Dean Ashton slammed him as being "ridiculous."

Since then, the midfielder's performances have declined, and according to Times journalist Tom Allnutt, Ange might've finally lost faith in him.

Speaking on The Tottenham Way Podcast, the journalist said, "I've heard a couple of whispers about Bissouma that he's not the right fit for Ange in terms of his personality and his play."

In all, the former LOSC Lille ace has made 56 appearances for the Lilywhites since joining two years ago, and with how this year has gone, he's unlikely to make too many more, which has understandably impacted his value.

Yves Bissouma's valuation in 2024

According to the CIES Football Observatory, Bissouma is now worth just €15m, which converts to about £13m, or £12m less than the club paid to sign him in 2022.

santiago-gimenez-timo-werner-tottenham-opinion

It also means that Werner, whom the CIES Football Observatory prices at €30m – £26m – is currently twice as valuable as the former Brighton ace, even though he has scored just four goals and provided four assists in 28 appearances for Spurs and RB Leipzig this season.

That said, the German's valuation is probably helped by the fact that there are genuine rumours about him signing a permanent deal with the north Londoners in the summer, as opposed to rumours about him being axed.

Paratici struck gold on Spurs star who's now worth 4x more than Zinchenko

The incredible talent has a bright future ahead of him.

ByJack Salveson Holmes May 10, 2024

Ultimately, Bissouma was a great player for the Seagulls, but for whatever reason, it has not worked out with Tottenham. The fact that his value has already plunged so dramatically is just extra evidence that the club should be doing their best to sell him this summer before it falls even further.
