Chelsea Eyeing Up Move For "Magic" £80k-p/w Gem

Todd Boehly is eyeing up a Chelsea move for Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic this summer as he aims to bolster Mauricio Pochettino's attacking options.

What’s the latest on Aleksandar Mitrovic to Chelsea?

According to Chelsea writer Simon Phillips on his Substack, the Blues are looking at a potential swoop for Mitrovic during the summer transfer window.

The £80k-per-week frontman still has three years left on his contract and Fulham will be demanding a fee in excess of the £22m they shelled out on him back in 2018 from Newcastle United.

Pochettino desperately requires a centre-forward with Premier League experience and the Serbian could be the ideal player to lead his attack next term.

Will Mitrovic be an upgrade on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang?

This season has been, to put it politely, a disaster for Chelsea. They will record their lowest Premier League finish since 1993/94, and having scored just 37 league goals – the joint-fourth-lowest total in the top flight – a striker will surely be top of Pochettino’s wishlist.

Upon his arrival from Barcelona last summer and having scored 92 goals in four years for Arsenal, Aubameyang was looked to as the one who could take Chelsea to the next level, yet the striker has managed to net just three for the Blues across 21 appearances.

In his 15 league matches, the 33-year-old has only posted 1.1 shots per game, created zero big chances, succeeded with just 0.2 dribble attempts per game and scored just one goal, indicating just how poor he has been in front of goal and with the ball at his feet.

Compare this to Mitrovic’s statistics during the same period, and the Fulham striker would almost certainly be a major upgrade for next season. He managed 3.9 shots per game, created five big chances, succeeded with one dribble attempt per game and scored 14 times, and these numbers have given the player an overall rating of 7.15/10, ranking him as the second-best performer out of the Whites squad.

Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic reacts.

The 28-year-old was dubbed as “magic” by Statman Dave at the start of the year as he matched his own Premier League scoring record. He has since surpassed this tally, and with one match left, could end up scoring more than the 14 already to his name – a decent total having recently returned from a lengthy ban.

With this in mind, Boehly must launch a move for the former Newcastle man, as his experience in the top flight, combined with his current ability, could potentially give the Blues 15–20 goals next term, and this could take them from mid-table mediocrity back towards Champions League contention.

Alex Hartley, Fran Wilson in England Women's squad for Pakistan ODIs

England Women’s squad for first two ODIs

Heather Knight (capt), Anya Shrubsole (vice-capt), Tammy Beaumont, Katherine Brunt, Kate Cross, Georgia Elwiss, Jenny Gunn, Alexandra Hartley, Danielle Hazell, Amy Jones (wk), Laura Marsh, Natalie Sciver, Fran Wilson, Lauren Winfield, Danielle Wyatt

Alex Hartley, the uncapped left-arm spinner, and Fran Wilson, who last played an international match in 2011, earned call-ups to the England Women’s squad of 15 for the first two one-dayers against Pakistan Women, following strong performances for England Women’s Academy in Sri Lanka earlier this year.Amy Jones has been designated to take over the wicketkeeping duties from Sarah Taylor, while Lauren Winfield, has been named as a back-up option. Taylor is currently on an indefinite break from the game to recover from stress and anxiety issues that have riddled her for the last four years.June 20 will also officially mark a change of guard in England women’s cricket as Heather Knight, the allrounder, will lead the side for the first time following Charlotte Edwards’ retirement in May. Knight will have in her ranks a top-quality pace attack led by Anya Shrubsole, the newly-appointed vice-captain, and Katherine Brunt, who is one short of 100 ODI wickets. Beth Langston, the seamer, has been ruled out of selection because of an ankle injury.”Monday is going to be a very proud day for our new captain and vice-captain, Heather Knight and Anya Shrubsole,” Mark Robinson, the head coach, said. “Under their leadership we will start a new chapter for the England Women’s team against a Pakistan side that cannot be underestimated. Pakistan showed everyone during the ICC World T20 how dangerous they can be, when they beat the hosts India on their own patch. They represent a fresh challenge that as a squad we can’t wait to get out there and tackle.”All three ODIs of the series will count towards the ICC Women’s Championship that will determine the top four direct qualifiers for the 2017 Women’s World Cup to be held in England next year. England and Pakistan are currently placed sixth and seventh respectively. However, England have an incentive of moving to No. 3 if they win the series, while Pakistan can jump two spots should they win all three matches.”Historically, we have a strong record against Pakistan, but the quality of international women’s cricket is rising all the time, so we are looking forward to the challenge of facing them on home soil over the next few weeks,” Robinson said. “We have a bit of catching up to do in the ICC Women’s Championship, so we will need to play some strong, positive cricket to secure maximum points in the three ODIs in order to move into the top four of that table.”England’s schedule following the series against Pakistan includes assignments against West Indies and Sri Lanka.

Manchester United Blasted For "Atrocious" Defence vs Everton

Manchester United have been blasted for their “atrocious” defending for Ellis Simms' chance during their Premier League game against Everton by journalist Laurie Whitwell.

Victory at Old Trafford…

The Red Devils were the hosts at Old Trafford this afternoon where Erik Ten Hag and his side secured a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Scott McTominay and Anthony Martial either side of the break.

Prior to the Scottish international’s moment of magic for the opener though, Toffees forward Simms had a glorious chance to put the visitors in front after breaking free and getting one-on-one with David De Gea only to put his effort wide of the post.

Taking to Twitter, Whitwell couldn’t believe how easy it was for Simms to get away from Manchester United’s defence and provide himself with an opportunity. He wrote:

“Atrocious defending from United for that Everton chance. Tarkowski ambled forward unchallenged, then Simms + Coleman had all the space/time they wanted to exchange passes. Terrible finish by Simms. He could have picked his spot.”

Manchester United celebrate scoring.

Should United be worried about their defence?

Manchester United will obviously have been concerned in that specific moment that they could have been about to go behind but given the overall performance on the day, luckily for Ten Hag it’s not something that he should worry about.

During the first-half, the Red Devils had 21 shots on target which is the most by any side in the opening 45 minutes of any game this season which just goes to show how many chances they were creating in the final third, albeit not putting every one away, as per OptaJoe.

The Dutch boss will no doubt be concerned by the injury to Marcus Rashford, who was forced off the pitch on 71 minutes, which put a slight dampener on the positive spirits.

However, there was so much to be optimistic about, and in terms of the race for the top four, United have put themselves in a very strong position heading into the run-in.

Man Utd eyeing up move for Kaoru Mitoma

Manchester United are eyeing up a move for exciting Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma in the summer transfer window, according to a fresh rumour.

The Lowdown: Mitoma superb for Brighton

The Seagulls have been a breath of fresh air this season, playing some eye-catching football under both Graham Potter and his successor, Roberto De Zerbi.

A top-four finish in the Premier League still isn’t out of the question for Brighton, who sit seventh in the table during the international break, and numerous breakout players have been key to their success.

One of those is undoubtedly Mitoma, who has impressed hugely out on the left wing with his quick feet, directness and end product, causing defenders nightmares along the way – just ask Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The 25-year-old has six goals and three assists to his name in the league so far this season, and his performances are understandably catching the eye of some top clubs.

Manchester City have been linked with a summer move for Mitoma and now it appears as though United are also in the mix.

The Latest: United eyeing move

According to The Daily Mail, the Red Devils have already sent scouts to watch the Japanese starlet in action and will now be keeping a close eye on him when they meet Brighton in the FA Cup semi-final later this month.

Mitoma’s current Seagulls deal runs until the summer of 2025.

The Verdict: Could be a great addition

The Brighton speedster has arguably been one of the Premier League’s most exciting attacking players this season, being hailed for his ‘blistering pace’ by Lewis Dunk, as well as being a ‘threat and a danger when he runs in behind’.

For these reasons, the 13-cap Japan international could be such an exciting signing by United at the end of the season, adding an extra spark to Erik ten Hag’s attack.

With the Red Devils likely to be fighting across four fronts next season, and back in the Champions League, rotation will be key and Mitoma could thrive on the left-hand side, linking with Luke Shaw and providing consistent end product.

There is the issue of Marcus Rashford potentially keeping him out of the team regularly, but Ten Hag could even consider using the Englishman more centrally moving forward, depending on whether or not he signs a big-name striker during the summer window.

Either way, the £10,000-a-week Mitoma is someone who United should be considering signing, following a season that has seen his reputation skyrocket.

Everton had a howler on Yerry Mina

Everton’s penchant over the last few years for spending vast amounts of money on players who simply haven’t performed on the pitch is staggering.

The likes of Theo Walcott, Allan, Moise Kean and Andre Gomes all arrived at Goodison Park to much fanfare and were expected to take the club to the next level, however, it didn’t work out like that.

All these players have subsequently left without leaving a positive mark, yet there is one big-money signing who is still at the Toffees yet has struggled to live up to the hype upon his arrival – Yerry Mina.

How much is Yerry Mina worth now?

The Colombian defender joined the Merseyside club having enjoyed a fantastic World Cup in 2018, where he became the first defender to score in his first three matches in the competition, although his country were knocked out by England at the last 16 stage.

Everton had seen enough to splash out £27.2m to sign him from Barcelona ahead of the 2018/2019 season and given his credentials, he looked as though he could become a rock at the heart of the club’s defence over the next few years.

It was a shaky start, with Mina playing just 13 Premier League matches in his debut season, missing 33 games in total due to a variety of injuries.

29 and 24 league appearances followed in his next two campaigns, however, since the beginning of 2021/2022, Mina has featured just 18 times across all competitions and thus has seen his value plummet.

According to Football Transfers, Mina is now worth just €12.8m (£11m) with that marking a massive drop from the near £30m the Toffees spent on him over four years ago.

Add the fact that he is earning £120k-per-week and it’s clear that his minimal contributions recently are draining money from the club which could be spent elsewhere and Sean Dyche may look to move him on this summer.

Noel Whelan criticised the player late last year, saying “on most days, he looks average” and with his contract expiring in a few months, he could well find his days numbered at Everton.

It hasn’t worked out for the 28-year-old at Everton, and his high transfer fee plus total wages may well have been utilised on other players who could have made a much bigger impact. Note this one down in the nightmare segment of Farhad Moshiri’s notebook.

Newcastle transfer news on Alex Scott

Newcastle United have reportedly scouted Bristol City central midfielder Alex Scott ahead of a potential move this summer.

The Lowdown: Midfielder needed

Newcastle will be looking for a new midfielder this summer, with reports that both Matty Longstaff and Matt Ritchie are expected to leave St. James’ Park after their contracts expire.

They have already been linked with moves for the likes of Anton Stach, Conor Gallagher and Gabri Veiga, but a new target has emerged on their shortlist.

The Latest: Scott interest

As per The Daily Mirror, scouts in the North East are ‘running checks’ on Scott ahead of the next window, while Wolves, AFC Bournemouth, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Crystal Palace are also thought to be interested in his signature.

The report adds that the Tynesiders are ‘ready to enter the race’ for the Englishman, who is regarded as ‘one of the brightest young talents in the country’.

Scott ‘fits the profile’ of who the Magpies are targeting, as they want to sign players who are ready for the Premier League but also have plenty of room for development.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-7/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Get it done

With Jonjo Shelvey being allowed to move to Nottingham Forest in the January transfer window as well, Eddie Howe has room for a new midfielder in his squad.

Nicknamed the ‘Guernsey Grealish‘ after his place of birth and likening to the Manchester City and England star, Scott is rated highly, having also been lauded as ‘deadly’ and ‘different class’ by his team-mate Kal Naismith.

At just 19 years of age, he has already played 80 times for Bristol City, scoring five goals and supplying a further seven assists (Transfermarkt), and has the extra versatility to be able to play anywhere across the middle of the park.

Nonetheless, given how in-demand Scott is likely to be this summer, it is imperative that the Magpies get this deal done as soon as possible.

Wolves must sign Scott amid superb display

Wolves have been linked with Bristol City midfielder Alex Scott recently and Matt Hobbs should look to bring him to Molineux after his superb performance in the FA Cup at the weekend.

John Percy of The Telegraph claimed in the early stages of January that Wolves had “been in talks” with Bristol City over a move for the midfielder, although may have to pay £25m in order to secure a deal.

Julen Lopetegui’s side have already brought in Matheus Cunha, Pablo Sarabia, Craig Dawson, Mario Lemina and Daniel Bentley this month, and could potentially return to Ashton Gate ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

If Wolves do retain an interest in signing the 19-year-old this month, there is no doubt that scouts will have been in attendance at Bristol City’s impressive 3-0 win over West Brom on Saturday and if they were, they will have been very impressed with Scott’s performance.

As per Sofascore, the talented midfielder would earn a superb 8/10 rating for his display, which ranked him as the best outfield player on the pitch from both sides.

The teenager would make it 2-0 in the first half after Mark Sykes’ assist, while he also contributed two key passes, one big chance created and an impressive 91% pass accuracy during the FA Cup tie.

Following the game, Nigel Pearson made a bold claim about the youngster, suggesting that he believes that it won’t be long before we see him in a Three Lions shirt.

He said: “Such is my faith in Alex that I believe he could go on to play for England.”

Suddenly, the Robins’ £25m asking price does not seem so excessive and it could prove a shrewd investment by the Old Gold, especially given the lack of homegrown talents currently in Lopetegui’s squad.

Scott has long been tipped for the top, with pathway manager Brian Tinnion singing his praises when he broke into Bristol City’s senior squad as a 17-year-old.

He commented: “His work rate and his desire to learn has been unbelievable. To start every single Championship game so far as a 17-year-old is excellent.

“He has every single attribute you would want in a professional footballer. He can tackle, he’s great with both feet, he can head the ball, his delivery is good and his overall quality is great.

“He lets his football do the talking and he’s getting better all the time. We are really excited about his future.”
Saturday’s strong performance was not a one-off for Scott, as he boasts four assists in the second tier so far this campaign, averaging a strong 6.81 rating from WhoScored in his 27 appearances thus far.
Therefore, with time running out before the deadline and Scott’s reputation only expected to grow, Wolves should definitely consider a move for the teenager this month.

Leicester: Harrison ‘keen’ to stay at Leeds

Leicester City target Jack Harrison is ‘keen’ to sign a new contract with Leeds United, according to Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett.

The Lowdown: Reinforcements needed

The Foxes are just one point above the Premier League relegation zone following a mixed start to the season, and Brendan Rodgers will know that he has to bolster his attacking ranks this month should he want to avoid the drop.

The Elland Road winger’s deal is set to expire in June 2024 and he hasn’t yet put pen to paper on an extension, leaving his future up in the air after bids from Newcastle United in the summer.

The Foxes are said to have identified the 26-year-old as a potential target, though it doesn’t sound like he wants to leave Yorkshire anytime soon.

The Latest: Harrison’s stance

Taking to Twitter, Dorsett again confirmed Leicester’s interest in Harrison but revealed that the player has his heart set on staying with the Whites.

“#lcfc interested in #lufc Jack Harrison as they search for a winger. Leeds don’t want to sell, especially to a relegation rival, and I’ve been told Harrison keen to agree new contract at Elland Road. Currently has 18 months left. Brazilian Tete likely to be half the cost for Leic.”

The Verdict: Setback for Rodgers

Harrison has been one of the standout performers for Leeds in recent years, and Rodgers will have suffered a setback by letting his target potentially slip through his fingers.

The Stoke-on-Trent-born talent has recorded 57 goal contributions during his time with Jesse Marsch’s outfit and is a versatile player with the ability to operate in four different positions, leading one to wonder how dangerous he would look interchanging in an attack alongside a healthy James Maddison (Transfermarkt).

The Whites star also ranks in the 94th percentile for most tackles per 90 minutes by players in his position, showing his desire to help his team at both ends of the pitch, which is exactly the profile of player Leicester are in need of recruiting.
