Leus du Plooy foils Durham again to underpin Derbyshire resistance

Solid support from Harry Came and Anju Dal enables home side to recover from 58 for 4

ECB Reporters Network05-Sep-2022Derbyshire 306 (du Plooy 82, Came 78, Dal 56, Rushworth 3-60) vs DurhamLeus du Plooy enjoyed another good day at Durham’s expense as Derbyshire recovered in the LV=Insurance County Championship match at the Incora County Ground. The Division Two promotion hopefuls were struggling at 58 for 4 but du Plooy followed his two centuries in the game at Chester-le Street in July with 82 from 123 balls. Harry Came scored a career-best 78, sharing a stand of 143 in 32 overs with du Plooy before Anuj Dal added 56 as Derbyshire were bowled out for 306, Chris Rushworth and Ben Raine both taking three wickets.Durham’s decision to bowl on a well-grassed pitch looked a good one when Rushworth and Raine reduced Derbyshire to 31 for 3. Luis Reece went to the second ball of the match when he edged Rushworth into the gloves of Tom Mackintosh and Billy Godleman’s poor season in the Championship continued when he played on driving at Raine in the next over.Brooke Guest again looked the part at No. 3, showing good judgement in challenging conditions but Derbyshire lost another big wicket in Rushworth’s sixth over. Wayne Madsen had to play at a ball that seamed away and was caught behind for 9 and Guest, who scored a hundred at Chester-le-Street in July, was also the victim of a good delivery.Guest drove Rushworth down the ground for four and, with du Plooy, was starting to rebuild the innings when Raine nipped one away to take his off stump.Another wicket before lunch would have plunged Derbyshire into deep trouble but Came and du Plooy negotiated nine overs and batting became increasingly easier in the afternoon. The inevitable change of ball came after 40 overs but Durham probably wished they had stuck with the old one as du Plooy drove the first delivery from Raine back past the bowler for his ninth four to reach 50 from 73 balls. He took three more fours from the over and with Durham’s bowlers failing to maintain the consistency they showed in the morning, du Plooy and Came played with increasing assurance.Came scored his maiden first-class fifty at Trent Bridge earlier in the season and two sixes off Liam Trevaskis got him moving towards a second. He launched the left-arm spinner down the ground before dispatching a full toss over the ropes and with du Plooy punishing anything short or overpitched, the momentum swung towards Derbyshire. The pair looked set to bat through the session when du Plooy aimed a loose forcing shot outside off stump at Trevaskis and was caught behind.Durham’s bowlers could not apply any sustained pressure after tea and Came pulled Oliver Gibson for his fifth four to pass his previous best score of 70. But Gibson, who bowled at a lively pace, yorked him just before the second new ball which accounted for the tail although Dal completed another half-century to secure a third batting point before he was out in the last over of the day.

He lost the ball 21x: Ange got it wrong giving 2/10 Spurs star 90 minutes

Tottenham Hotspur fell to yet another home defeat in the Premier League this evening, losing 6-3 to table toppers Liverpool in a frantic affair in North London.

Goals from Dominic Solanke, James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski weren’t enough for Ange Postecoglou’s side, with the damage already done by Arne Slot’s men after romping into a 5-1 lead with half an hour still to play.

Spurs now sit 11th in the league going into Christmas, already eight points off a Champions League spot and looking a long way off where many would expect them to be after the backing from the hierarchy over the summer.

Pressure is undoubtedly mounting on the shoulders of the Lilywhites boss, amid frustrations within the fanbase over their inconsistent form over the last couple of months.

The 4-0 victory away at Manchester City now seems like a distant memory, simply unable to build on the impressive display produced at the Etihad a month ago.

Spurs' most disappointing performers against Liverpool

The prospect of facing the league leaders was always going to be a daunting one, but given the defensive injury crisis of late, the task was made near enough impossible – but that doesn’t take away the inexcusable performances of numerous starters.

Radu Dragusin has been the beneficiary of the recent fitness problems but was unable to grasp his opportunity with both hands against the Reds in North London.

The Romanian featured for the entirety of the defeat, losing possession 14 times and only managed to win 33% of his duels, unable to prevent the onslaught from the visitors, notably caught out for Dominic Szoboszlai’s strike.

Yves Bissouma is another player who once again was unable to make a positive impression during the encounter, committing three fouls and often being outclassed by the likes of Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch.

He also lost possession 12 times, looking careless in possession and constantly handing the opposition the opportunity to create chances and increase their goal tally in the final third.

Despite both players appearing from start to finish, there was another Spurs ace who made it to the final whistle, with Postecoglou making the wrong call in not withdrawing him during the second half.

The player who Spurs should have replaced against Liverpool

There were few shining lights in yet another dismal showing, but goalscorer Kulusevski looked bright throughout, always looking the most likely to somehow drag the Lilywhites back into the game.

However, the same can’t be said for teammate Pedro Porro, who was dominated throughout the defeat, lacking quality at both ends and ultimately contributing to the convincing scoreline in Liverpool’s favour.

The Spaniard was part of the makeshift backline but didn’t cover himself in glory during his 90-minute display in North London – not for the first time this season either.

The 25-year-old only completed 79% of his attempted passes, losing possession 21 times – the most of any player on the pitch – unable to provide the forward-thinking players with any form of ammunition.

He also lost 50% of the duels he entered, getting dribbled past once and only making one interception, with the likes of Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah having a field day within the Spurs defensive third.

As a result of his shocking display at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Porro was handed a measly 2/10 rating by The Express’ Tom Parsons – an indication as to how poor he was throughout the unacceptable defeat.

Had the club not been going through their current injury situation, he would undoubtedly find himself with a decrease in minutes, but it was a surprise that Desiny Udogie wasn’t brought on in the second half, which could’ve seen Djed Spence shift to a more natural right-sided role.

Given his display, Ange must consider dropping the defender for the Boxing Day clash to face Nottingham Forest – in what will be another tricky fixture given their current top-four standing.

The Ryan Reynolds effect: Hollywood star watches on as Steven Fletcher, Sam Smith and Jack Marriott down Burton and move closer to promotion

Sam Smith was the star of the show as Wrexham beat Burton 3-0 and inched closer towards automatic promotion into the Championship.

The Red Dragons could not have been given an easier start after Burton had a man dismissed after just 11 minutes. Charlie Webster was the man sent packing for the visitors after lunging in desperately on George Dobson, leaving his studs high on the shin of the midfielder and giving referee Seb Stockbridge no choice but to brandish the red card.

The chances then began to fall for the Welsh side, with Oliver Rathbone blasting one over from just inside the box and Matty James sending one wide of the post from a similar position.

There was an emerging pattern at the SToK Racecourse. Wrexham were taking their time to build up with patient play but were constantly met by a wall of Burton players who seemed comfortable dealing with the host's many crosses.

Meanwhile, Gary Bowyer's side did look dangerous on the break and often caught Wrexham out with some fluid movements in the final third, although to no real bother for goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo.

Burton even had a tame call for a penalty turned away in the first half and they remained happy for Wrexham to control, which was reflected in the stats at the break, with the hosts having over 70% of the ball as well as 12 shots compared to their opponents' three.

There was certainly more intent from Wrexham as they emerged back into the Welsh sunshine for the second half and their bright restart was almost rewarded when Sam Smith hit the woodwork with a header.

A few delays due to small injuries in the Burton camp eventually dragged the game back down to a slower pace, although the home team still looked the more likely to break the deadlock.

And the moment finally came in the 69th minute when Wrexham were awarded a penalty after Smith was wiped out by goalkeeper Max Crocombe in the box. The striker was congratulated for his work to win the spot kick before the ball was handed over to substitute Steven Fletcher, who buried his effort.

Minutes later and Smith had a goal of his own. The 27-year-old latched onto a through ball from Ryan Longman and had all the time in the world to pick his spot, eventually choosing to slot the ball into the far corner before wheeling away to celebrate.

It was Smith's last major contribution to the match as he was withdrawn shortly after to a standing ovation, including from the boss himself in Ryan Reynolds, who was in attendance and proving to be a good luck charm.

Parkinson's men had one more in them before the final whistle and their third came through Jack Marriott. The forward met a ball carried over the top of the defence thanks to the wind and struck the ball sweetly into the bottom corner with his laces.

Truthfully, it was a scrappy game made difficult by the windy conditions but no one aside from the Burton players and fans inside the stadium will care. Wrexham earned themselves three big points that puts them that step closer to another promotion.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE MVP

Were it not for Smith's constant running and battling in the Burton half, Wrexham may not have walked away with all three points. His persistence was the difference between the two teams and he was wise enough to pick himself up after rattling the crossbar and provide the key moments in the match, winning the penalty for his side before grabbing a goal himself.

THE BIG LOSER

Jay Rodriguez has been a prominent figure for Wrexham since joining in January but his afternoon ended 30 minutes in after picking up a knock. He will be thanking his team-mates – in particular Smith – for getting the job done without him.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

Wrexham are still chasing promotion into the Championship but it remains a tight contest in the standings below them.

AC Milan plotting Nottingham Forest transfer raid for £40,000-p/w defender

AC Milan are now the latest team to be plotting a move for a Nottingham Forest mainstay, according to a recent report. It has been an impressive 2024/25 season for the Reds so far, as they have 13 points from a possible 24, losing just one of their opening eight league games. Nuno Espirito Santo has put together a strong squad that has players who are really impressing, leading to interest from around Europe.

Forest will be looking to continue this good start to the season for much longer, and even though their players are performing very well, the Reds already have their eye on potential transfers in the near future.

Last week, Forest were linked with a move for winger Rayan, as they are prepared to battle fellow Premier League side West Ham to win his signature. Vasco de Gama are ready to sell the player for as little as £8.5m in the New Year, and that has alerted Forest as well as other top flight teams.

As well as eyeing a deal for Rayan, Nuno’s side could potentially be plotting a transfer swoop for Jamie Bynoe-Gittens. The Reds have sent scouts to watch the Borussia Dortmund player in recent times, and they could now be preparing a move in 2025.

As Forest eye potential reinforcements, they look to have a fight on their hands when it comes to keeping one of their top performing players from this season.

AC Milan plotting Nottingham Forest transfer raid

According to AS Roma Live, relayed by Sport Witness, AC Milan have now joined the race to sign Nottingham Forest’s Ola Aina. This comes after it was reported earlier this month that Roma were keeping an eye on the defender, as they plot a £10 million move in January.

Roma are still interested in Aina, who is on a weekly wage of £40,000 at the City Ground, but now Milan are also in the hunt, as they have been watching him play for Forest this season.

Furthermore, they are looking for a replacement for Davide Calabria, as he looks set to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season, and Aina is an opportunity being “carefully monitored” by Milan’s management team. This has alerted Roma, and they may look to make a move in January to get ahead of their Italian rivals.

This all comes as Forest are looking to open talks with Aina over a new contract, who has been described as being “reliable” by analyst Ben Mattinson in the past. The 28-year-old joined Forest in the 2023 summer transfer window after spending a couple of years playing in Italy for Torino. Aina has been a key player for Forest this season, so the club will be doing all they can to secure his future beyond this campaign.

'Be competitive with all of the teams' – NYCFC have a new coach, youthful roster, $780M stadium on the way and a stable philosophy the MLS club hopes will spawn success

With two years until their new stadium opens, the City Football Group club is focused on both the present and the future

David Lee knows what the perception is. The NYCFC sporting director is aware that the City Football Group-backed side haven't had a big name star since 2018. He knows, too, that some eyebrows were raised when a busy offseason included moving on from three key pieces.

From the outside, this appears to be a team treading water – especially with $780 million stadium set to open in 2027. Looking for a big name club in a big market looking to spend even bigger? You've come to the wrong place.

Except, that's not the plan. NYCFC, he insists, are being intentional. They want to focus on cultivating youth, getting the best out of returning players, and supplementing it all with key signings in positions that need immediate attention.

And more broadly, it all points towards long-term ambition. NYCFC insist they can finish in the top four of the Eastern Conference this year, while also competing for trophies outside of MLS. The goal here is sustainability. This team insists that they have all of the right pieces in place.

"I think what we've tried to do – and what we've been asked to do, what we've been asked as a football club – is to build a team that can compete for trophies as often as possible, and to do that in a financially responsible way for our business," Lee told GOAL.

Getty Images Sport'I'm not sure if there's pressure'

In December 2018, David Villa walked out of the training ground for NYCFC for the last time. He had been a fine servant to the club across his four years in New York. A 2016 MLS MVP, four-time All-Star, and top all-time club goalscorer – it was hard to ask more of a player who had spent the majority of his career tearing up the Spanish top flight. Since then, though New York has looked a markedly different squad. This was once a club of Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo, later managed by Arsenal legend Patrick Viera. It all looked rather glitzy.

Now, though, there are no more stars in New York – at least, not in the traditional sense. Instead, money has been spent on the kind of signings that move the needle in MLS, but might not sell shirts worldwide. Maxi Moralez, Santi Rodriguez and Taty Castellanos have all, at various points, been crucial for the club, Lee argued.

"I think Max is a star. I think Taty is a star. Santi Rodriguez is a star. But we haven't had a star name in terms of the global, European lens of what that looks like since 2018. So it's been quite a while," Lee said.

In that time, though, NYCFC have developed something far more sustainable. They have only failed to make the playoffs twice. Their business has been smart, as looking outside American borders has served them well. They won MLS cup in 2021, a value-for-money South American star scoring the goal that got them there. But even that player, Talles Magno, admitted that this was by no means an easy league.

"A problem was that I left Vasco da Gama with the idea that the MLS was not so strong, but it was totally different from what I had expected," Magno told ESPN. "I thought I'd be in the first team, and be one of the best, but everyone was faster than me. It was a shock for me. I had to work hard to develop this. The game there is quicker than in Brazil, the ball circulates faster and the teams are more compact, one player close to the other, with a lot of physical contact. It's more like Europe than Brazil."

Advertisementfradi.hu'Experience winning and winning regularly'

In that light, then, the hiring of Pascal Jansen makes plenty of sense. The former Ferencvaros manager has been pursued by City Football Group in some capacity for almost 10 years. The global football network, that has 13 clubs on six continents, first initiated contact as early as 2015. And they have remained in talks.

"We've been in conversation ever since, not on a monthly basis, but now and then, and once New York was really interested in investigating if I would be interested to come this way, it became more intense," Jansen told GOAL.

In Jansen, they believe they have the right man. He has been on the New York radar for some time due to his intensity and playing style. Top to bottom, Lee thinks he's a perfect fit for the club.

"We want to be a team that creates lots of chances, to be entertaining," Lee said. "We're here to provide something for the fans that they want to come and watch. And we want to control the game in possession. If we don't have possession, and we've got to try and win possession back as quickly as we can. So, on a very philosophical level, that's the highest sort of points that we can go to."

There is also the appeal of being a winner. Jansen won more than 50 percent of his games for AZ. Hungarian side Ferencvaros were clear title contenders when he left the post in December.

"We wanted to find a head coach who had experience winning and winning regularly, because I think we've got a group that we're really excited about, and what we feel like is a base of a really talented group," Lee said. "And so it was important for us that he's got 200 games behind him, and is highly experienced."

IMAGN'I really don't mind if it's a guy who's 16, 17 or 37'

He will approach this all with an interesting squad. NYCFC were among the youngest teams in MLS last year. In sending James Sands to St. Pauli and Jovan Mijatovic to Belgian side Oud-Heverlee, they have gotten even younger. But simultaneously, key pieces all over the pitch have been retained. Players that accounted for more than 80 percent of the minutes last season are still in the squad. NYCFC believe that they have a group that can grow together.

"What we don't want to do is sign players that sort of block somebody's pathway from earning those opportunities," Lee said.

Jansen has bought into that from day one. He made it clear to Lee that he wanted to work with the group he had immediately before jumping to any conclusions about transfer business. He didn't want to hear about any options, in fact, until he had taken training.

"The first meeting we had in New York – and we were presenting some of the options we were looking at – and, his first reaction was 'I'd really like to train the group, if that's possible," Lee said. "I've seen you play a lot, I think I know what I've got, but it's very different till you actually get in the middle of a training session."

It is that kind of philosophy that has served NYCFC well in recent years. Starting goalkeeper Matt Freese, for one, was an afterthought two years ago. Now he is among the best in MLS, and knocking on the door for the national team. Jansen has embodied that in previous roles. He started his career working for PSV's youth teams, and, historically, has been willing to give young players a chance to thrive.

"I really don't mind if it's a guy who's 16, 17 or 37," Jansen said. "You will be held accountable for whatever is expected from you. So that, in my approach, has helped me create a lot of clarity in how we work and how we understand each other."

NYCFCThe future

NYCFC's roster is yet to be filled out, Lee emphasized. There is still room for something to happen here, and with the transfer window open until April, there is always a chance that they could strike if the right deal shows up.

"if there's a global superstar that becomes available, and we think is interesting and makes sense from both a football and a business perspective, then we should pursue it," Lee said. "And you know, those opportunities we don't think of have fell right into our hands right now."

Meanwhile, Jansen has been going about preseason diligently. He has been surprised by how difficult the team has found his intense fitness regime, he said, but is starting to see signs of a side that he believes can compete in MLS.

The key here, he admitted, is consistency. New York ran hot and cold last year – something that ultimately cost them over the course of the campaign. A bit more of that and New York expects to be among the top four of the Eastern Conference. Getting there means a focus on the basic things.

"What I just focus on is making sure that I get my ideas, the jobs that I require on field and off field, and the responsibilities that come along with it, to make them really crystal clear," Jansen said. "So what I've introduced working with my boys now is also shared responsibility and taking accountability."

Where, exactly, those principles take NYCFC remains to be seen. This is a team operating shrewdly in a big market – something fairly unique in the scope of not only MLS but also in American sports culture. But it seems the pieces might just be aligned for a future that unites both stability and success.

"And that is one of the things that drives us every day, to be competitive with all the teams, in order to compete for what we're looking for: top four and competing for a trophy," Jansen said.
