The Hundred's future uncertain as ECB board prepares for postponement

New tournament’s inaugural season set to be pushed back with its long-term future unclear

It now looks almost certain that the Hundred’s launch will be pushed back 12 months. With budgets tight, the availability of overseas players likely to be limited and the opportunity for ticket sales reduced, the ECB have decided now is not the time to attempt to launch a new competition that would place further demands on their finances.Even before the Covid-19 pandemic, the ECB’s own forecasts predicted the competition would make a loss in its first five seasons. Costs in the first year – including the £1.3m paid to each county – were expected to amount to £58m against an income of £51m.ALSO READ: Hundred ticket sale delayed due to coronavirus concernIt is possible the competition will never see the light of day. By the time the 2021 season starts, the ECB are likely to be short of money and have a new chairman at the helm. A review into the competition’s sustainability and necessity is likely. Not playing it could save around £35m a year (the costs of running the competition before the annual payment of £1.3m to each of the counties): it could be seen as a luxury the game can no longer afford.Supporters of the Hundred would point out that the competition is projected to bring in £51m, which includes £36.5m from the home broadcast deal, £4m from the overseas broadcast deal, £6.5m from ticket sales and £4m from sponsorship, against those overall costs of £58m in the first year. Without those revenue streams, the overall saving might be more like £7m a year. But there is a possibility other options could be looked at. The original broadcast deal was not for the Hundred, after all, but for a new-look T20 competition. If the ECB were to revert to such a competition, they could, perhaps, satisfy broadcasters and sponsors and put on a much lower-cost tournament.Next year’s schedule – and the Hundred, in particular – is absolutely not the issue occupying those running the game right now. But it is increasingly obvious that, by the time the 2021 season starts, the game will still be reeling from the economic blows taken in 2020. As a result, it looks as likely a fresh pair of eyes will take a look at the Hundred. The costs – always eye-watering – now look tough to justify.International cricketInternational cricket is the priority. Desperate to satisfy the demands of broadcasters, the ECB will do everything they can to fulfil their international fixtures. That may well mean playing behind closed doors. Steve Elworthy, who has an excellent record at running high-profile events, has been charged with exploring the possibilities of delivering cricket in “bio-secure” environments. That could see games scheduled in two or three grounds – Old Trafford and the Ageas Bowl both have on-site hotels with sufficient capacity to be considered – to limit travel. Only essential personnel – match officials and broadcasters etc. – would be allowed inside. It is thought numbers could be limited to around 300.It is also possible two England teams – a Test and limited-overs team – could be in action almost concurrently. While there is little benefit in playing at the same time – that would only dilute the broadcaster’s product – they could, perhaps, play on successive days to ensure an almost constant flow of live sport on TV. This would require two separate squads and coaching teams.Old Trafford could be turned into a ‘bio-secure environment’ to host behind-closed-doors internationals•AFP

Even then, however, the ECB will require permission from the government to push ahead. At present it is far from certain such permission will be forthcoming.England’s international season is, at present, still scheduled to start on June 4 with a Test against West Indies at The Oval. There are two more Tests against the same opposition (at Edgbaston and then Lord’s) later in the month before Australia arrive for some limited-overs games in July. Pakistan are the opponents in another three Test series starting in late July and continuing until August 24. There are then three ODIs scheduled against Ireland in September.ALSO READ: Morgan open to fielding two England teams at onceThere is every chance the ECB will announce this week that they expect to play no cricket until the end of June at the earliest. And while West Indies are willing to push their series back into July – meaning the postponement of their series against New Zealand and South Africa – even that may prove too early. Pakistan, meanwhile, are reluctant to move their series into September as that would clash with the schedule for the Asia Cup. And while there is talk of playing the Australia games in September, there is no guarantee there will be authorised travel between the countries by then. There is just a little slack in the schedule. England have, at present, little cricket scheduled for December. It remains possible the series against West Indies will be rescheduled until then and played in the Caribbean. The T20 World Cup, meanwhile, is scheduled for October and November. While there might be scope to postpone it, the complications of doing so are significant. Realistically, it is the date around which all other series must gravitate.County ChampionshipRyan ten Doeschate lifts the County Championship trophy as his Essex team-mates celebrate•Getty Images

As things stand, the ECB have confirmed there will be no cricket – recreational or professional – before May 28. With the Championship season scheduled to start on April 12 and include seven rounds before the end of May, it looks set to be hit hard even in the best case scenario. And most would agree that even a start in mid-July is an optimistic aspiration. While there could be the scope to reclaim some missing games by pushing the season into October, there is also an acceptance that the forms of the game that generate cash – international cricket and The Blast – will be prioritised ahead of the Championship. As a result, there is a chance the Championship season will be wiped out entirely for the first time since WW2.ALSO READ: Red-ball specialists face up to prospect of reduced Championship seasonBut there is a desire, even at the top level of the ECB, to play first-class cricket this season. And with counties attempting to justify their membership fees, England players requiring cricket ahead of any potential Test series and the game clambering to regain a semblance of normality, it would be no surprise at all if a handful of first-class games were played at both the start and in the dying weeks of the season. In all but one of the ECB’s many mapped out scenarios, first-class county cricket does feature.Whether that is enough to constitute a Championship campaign remains to be seen. The competition has generally been seen as a marathon: the reward for consistent cricket across six months. To award it to a side that may have played four, five or six games – perhaps in a regional group – with a knock-out section might be too much of a departure. It’s an argument most would love to have at the moment, though. Any form of first-class county cricket might be considered a bonus at this stage.One-Day CupSomerset captain Tom Abell holds the Royal London Cup aloft•Getty Images

It looked, for a while, as if this was the most expendable competition of them all. Originally scheduled to run alongside the Hundred, it was set to be relegated to something of a “development competition”, as it was once described by an ECB executive, featuring only those players not required in the more high-profile competition. Now, however, there is a chance that if the season starts early enough, the One-Day Cup (or some form of 50-over competition, anyway) could take place at the start of whatever season we have. Not only could the games, perhaps behind closed doors, fill a relatively large amount of television hours, but they could feature the best England-qualified players. If time is limited, this competition could be played as a knock-out. But it does have to be stressed: there is still a strong possibility we see no cricket this seasonWhile there will not be any ECB ban on overseas players – there is some doubt as to the legality of such a move – it seems unlikely that many will be able to travel. Several have already had their contracts cancelled or deferred.T20 BlastEssex walk out at the start of the T20 Blast final•Getty Images

Every effort will be made to allow this competition to take place, even if that means it is pushed into the final weeks of an elongated season. And while there are worries over whether spectators will be allowed to attend – social distancing may be with us for many months – there is a hope that by scheduling for as late in the year as possible, the counties will have every chance of benefiting from ticket sales.Indeed, in time, we may come to see a new-found appreciation of the Blast as one of the lessons of this episode. A competition requiring relatively little marketing spend – certainly by comparison with the Hundred – by guaranteeing somewhere around a million ticket sales is not to be sniffed at by a game desperate for the life line offered by cash sales. If there’s any cricket with spectators in the 2020 season, it’s likely that will be Blast cricket. The IPLThere’s little doubt that the BCCI will be keen to find a way to stage the IPL this year. With September one possibility, it raises the prospect of a clash of priorities for players between their IPL teams and their international commitments. If the IPL was to be played in September-October, it may also force the postponement of England’s limited-overs tour of India, which is due to played immediately ahead of the T20 World Cup. That series could, perhaps, be played early in the new year instead, ahead of England’s Test tour of India.Puzzles like that will be discussed provisionally in an ICC video-conference between boards on Thursday, but as with all these plans, they are at the mercy of events well beyond anyone’s control.

Later on Wednesday evening, Yamal shared a photo on social media of himself with his father, alongside a number of heart emojis. However, he later deleted the post.

Yamal has often spoken about the crucial role his father has played in his life and career. Nasraoui was present in the Euro 2024 final and his unwavering encouragement has been instrumental in Lamine's development as one of the most promising talents in European football. There will now be doubts over whether the winger will be back in action with Barcelona against Valencia at Mestalla on Saturday in La Liga.

Ange must now axe 3/10 Spurs dud who was worse than Van de Ven

Tottenham Hotspur suffered a chastening defeat on Tyneside as Newcastle United took full advantage of an outfit lacking direction, purpose and presence.

Ange Postecoglou deserves plaudits for his work in north London after being appointed as Antonio Conte's successor last summer, arriving at a Spurs side that had lost its place in European competition and would imminently, and predictably, lose its talisman in Harry Kane.

And while, at the moment, Tottenham perch in fourth place, this was a stark illustration of the mountainous task still ahead for the craggy-faced Australian, who will next host neighbours Arsenal in the Premier League, the Gunners chasing titles in both the Premier League and Champions League.

It's concerning that Spurs have regressed on enemy soil once again after making such a concerted point of putting the 3-0 loss against Fulham behind them and ensuring that it would not happen again, but injury-ravaged Newcastle were hungry and relentless and Tottenham were overwhelmed.

Micky van de Ven has been a near indomitable defensive force after joining Tottenham from German Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in a £43m package last summer, rebooting a backline that had fallen by the wayside last season, but he endured a torrid afternoon against Newcastle.

Micky van de Ven's performance vs Newcastle

Tottenham's 4-0 defeat at St. James' Park had clear shades of last season's woes when Eddie Howe's side thrashed Spurs 6-1 as they edged closer to a stunning top-four finish.

Van de Ven was signed last summer to prevent such scenarios from recurring but he was right at the epicentre this weekend, culpable for both of Newcastle's opening goals, left in a spin as Alexander Isak broke free to fire on goal before slipping again as Anthony Gordon capitalised on Pedro Porro's skewed clearance, landing in his path.

Penning his post-match player ratings, Football.london reporter Alasdair Gold gave Van de Ven a 4/10 score and wrote: 'Slipped over at crucial moments for both of Newcastle's first half goals. Tried to get back for the third but couldn't stop Isak. Made a couple of blocks but this was not a good day for the defence or the attack.'

It's important to remember that the 22-year-old has simply been met with a tough test after such exemplary performances in his first year on English shores, even said to be "out of this world" by pundit Jamie Carragher earlier in the campaign.

There's no denying that Van de Ven struggled against a slick and singular Newcastle side, but Postecoglou will not be alarmed given the centre-half's usual constancy.

Micky van de Ven for Tottenham

The same cannot be said for Yves Bissouma, however, whose poor performances are now becoming something of an issue.

Yves Bissouma's game in numbers

Bissouma struggled last season after signing for Tottenham from Brighton & Hove Albion for a fee rising to £35m, starting just ten matches in the Premier League, but he has cemented a starring role under Postecoglou.

Once praised as a "monster" by journalist Aaron Stokes, who also said he was destined for a 'big six' club, and while he has been much-improved at Tottenham this season the Mali international's recent performances have been punctuated with inconsistency.

Against Newcastle, as per Sofascore, Bissouma was hooked after just 57 minutes as Spurs toiled, completing 90% of his passes, making three tackles and winning four of his seven contested duels but failing to take control in the central midfield battle.

Yves Bissouma

While Van de Ven is the obvious scapegoat given his direct blunders for the Magpies' first two goals, Bissouma indeed endured another torrid afternoon and was actually branded with a 3/10 match rating, worse off than his Dutch teammate.

Gold said: 'Made an early important clearance near the Spurs goalline from a corner but he looked off the pace for long periods as well. Came off with Bentancur and Son.'

It's patently clear that he's not making the desired impact in Postecoglou's system and, while it's something of a bold move, he must now be axed.

Ange must now axe Yves Bissouma

Bissouma is unquestionably one of Tottenham's most talented and technically proficient players but he is simply failing to make good use of his skill set and is actually hampering his team right now.

The 27-year-old ranks among the top 1% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 12% for progressive passes, the top 13% for successful take-ons, the top 5% for tackles and the top 7% for interceptions per 90, as per FBref.

However these metrics are misleading when observing Bissouma's post-AFCON performances, and having once again been poor against Newcastle on Saturday Postecoglou must now unleash someone such as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from the outset.

The thing is, Bissouma has started eight Premier League matches in succession, failing to make a positive impact in nearly every single affair. Hojbjerg was introduced after the break during Tottenham's 3-1 victory over Nottingham Forest one week ago and excelled in instilling control and composure in the centre of the park.

Gold's recent match ratings above depict the full picture: Bissouma is languishing well below expectations and with so much at stake in the Premier League, he must now be ditched.

Aston Villa face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday evening, and while they have a tough task in stifling the free-flowing Gunners, Spurs have squandered a fine opportunity to create some space in the race for Champions League qualification.

Bissouma cannot be allowed to mar a promising campaign any longer; he's wasted his last chance in the starting lineup.

Ange may have to sell Spurs star who wanted to go in January for cheap fee

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou may be forced to sell a member of his squad who wanted to leave in January for a "much lower" price.

Spurs players who could leave the club this summer – explained

A host of senior Spurs players currently face uncertain futures, with a number of them failing to play their way into Postecoglou's plans since the Australian's arrival at the helm.

Indeed, a lot of them are now out on temporary spells at various clubs across the country, with defender Japhet Tanganga, left-back Sergio Reguilon, right-back Djed Spence, striker Tory Parrott, centre-back Joe Rodon and club-record signing Tanguy Ndombele all plying their trades away from N17.

They're all set to return in the summer when technical director Johan Lange and chief football officer Scott Munn are faced with the tasks of either finding them new homes – as all appear to not be in Postecoglou's plans as things stand.

Meanwhile, there is also the matter of players who remain at Spurs but on the fringes of Postecoglou's first team. Bryan Gil opted to remain at Spurs in January despite late interest from Brighton and clubs in Spain, but the young attacker isn't being rewarded with more minutes and looks likely to be a candidate for the chopping block this summer.

Another curious case is that of midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who was once a mainstay under Antonio Conte. The Dane's minutes have been severely restricted under Postecoglou, as he doesn't quite seem to fit the 58-year-old's tactical system.

Pierre Hojbjerg.

Hojbjerg's made the vast majority of his appearances from the substitutes bench, but Tottenham's head coach has insisted that he remains an "important" member of the squad.

“It is obvious someone that has played regularly would have wanted to play more but ultimately our performances have been strong and he has had to bide his time," said Postecoglou on Hojbjerg earlier this season.

“He has also been very important in a lot of the games that we’ve won late or had to shore up late. He has been one of the people who has helped us and it is not like he hasn’t contributed at all. He’s been a really important part for us. We wouldn’t be in this position if we were just reliant on our starting XI.

“With Pierre, he is a professional and very determined."

Tottenham could be forced to sell Hojbjerg for "much lower" price

Hojbjerg, due to his lack of starting opportunities this season, has been linked with a move away from Tottenham – and was in the build-up to January.

Now, according to Calciomercato, it is believed Hojbjerg wanted to leave Tottenham in January and the club may now be forced to sell for a "much lower" price – due to his contract expiring in 2025.

The north Londoners apparently blocked his exit in the winter window, but it could be a completely different scenario this summer. The "sensational" Hojbjerg, as labelled by Seb Stafford-Bloor, changed agents recently, which is seen as a "clear signal" of his desire to make a Serie A move.

Virat Kohli moves to within a point of No. 1-ranked Steven Smith

Virat Kohli’s career-best 254 not out in India’s second Test win over South Africa in Pune has vaulted him back above the 900-point mark in the ICC rankings for Test batsmen, and has put him within touching distance of top-ranked Steven Smith.Kohli’s tally stands at 936 points, while Smith sits on 937. The India captain will have the opportunity to regain the top spot, which Smith wrested from him on his return to Test cricket in the 2019 Ashes, when India face South Africa in the third Test in Ranchi, starting October 19.Among the bowlers in action in Pune, R Ashwin moved from tenth to seventh, having picked up six wickets in the innings-and-137-run win inside four days, which helped India get a winning 2-0 lead in the series.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Kohli overcame a mini-slump on the way to his first triple-figure score in Test cricket in 2019. After the first Test – which India had won by 203 runs – Kohli had fallen below 900 rating points for the first time since January 2018.Ashwin followed his seven-for in the first innings of the first Test with another good show in the second, to move ahead of Vernon Philander on the bowlers’ table. Philander fell three places and is now sitting on eighth.Other players who made significant movements included India opener Mayank Agarwal, who followed a double-century in the first Test with a century in the second to rise to a career-high 17th spot. Umesh Yadav, who was making a comeback to the Test side, took six wickets and jumped six places to at 25th spot.

Naples based journalist drops major Victor Osimhen claim for Chelsea fans

With the wounds still fresh from Sunday's 1-0 loss in the League Cup final, Chelsea have put yet another disappointing Premier League season behind them and have started to look towards the summer.

Chelsea's search for a striker

Whilst few things are going right at Stamford Bridge at the moment, many Blues' fans have taken particular issue with the lack of action on the goal-scoring front. Cole Palmer has shone for his new side in a hybrid forward role, but hardly any of his teammates have been able to help contribute.

The only regular out and out striker by trade in the Chelsea squad this season has been Nicolas Jackson, who has battled issues with fitness and form and hasn't really found his feet at Stamford Bridge.

With Chelsea's struggles in front of goal this season clear, there is no doubt that at the top of Todd Boehly's to-do-list this summer will be to find a new number nine for his team. Many names have been floated as potential solutions to the vacancy and reports now suggest that the Blues are in pole position to sign their number one target.

Chelsea lead race for Osimhen

As if to soften the blow of Sunday's loss, Sport Witness are reporting that word from Naples based journalist Emanuele Cammaroto is that the Blues are now front runners to secure the services of Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen.

The West London outfit had been engaged in a close battle with PSG for the signature of the 25-year-old, however the outlet suggests Chelsea are now in pole position and "want to close the operation quickly". The Premier League side have been in talks with Napoli over this deal for some time now and look to have finally broken away as favourites to get the transfer over the line.

Some fears had grown over recent weeks that Kylian Mbappé's move to Real Madrid would see PSG up their offer. This news out of Naples put this theory to bed and will be a cause for celebration in West London.

Osimhen penned a new deal with the Italian side back in December 2023 however, it is evident that it is not Napoli's intention to keep him if the right offer comes in. The fresh contract runs until 2026 and will see the Nigerian earn a staggering £8.7million a season. The deal also includes a release clause in the region of €130million which will have to be matched in order to pry him away from Italy.

We all know that Boehly is not afraid to splash the cash and it is likely that the Chelsea owner would not be put off by these figures. Whilst the American's time at the helm at Stamford Bridge has seen extortionate fees thrown around, securing Osimhen for the figure cited would be a good deal for the club.

BCCI suspends Rinku Singh for taking part in Abu Dhabi T20 tournament

Such violations will not be tolerated in the future, and strict action will be taken, says the BCCI in a statement

Rinku Singh helped Deccan Gladiators win the Ramadan T20 Tournament•BCCI

Taking part in an “unauthorised” T20 tournament in Abu Dhabi has landed Uttar Pradesh batsman Rinku Singh in trouble, with the BCCI suspending him for three months. The tournament in question was the Ramadan T20 Tournament, organised by Abu Dhabi Cricket earlier this month, in which Rinku led his team Deccan Gladiators to the title by smashing a 58-ball 104 and then picking up two wickets against New Medical Centre.”Mr. Singh did not seek permission from the BCCI before taking part in the T20 league hence directly violating the BCCI rules and regulations,” a BCCI statement said. “As per the BCCI norms, a player registered with the Board cannot play in any tournaments abroad without the Board’s permission.”Rinku, the 21-year-old middle-order batsman and part-time offspinner, was in the India A squad for the ongoing four-day series against Sri Lanka, but the BCCI said he had been withdrawn for the second and final game, which starts on May 31 in Hubli. He didn’t figure in the XI in the first game, which the Indians won by an innings and 205 runs.”Mr. Rinku Singh therefore has been suspended with immediate effect for a period of three months starting June 1, 2019. He has been removed from the current India A squad set to play a multi-day game against Sri Lanka A starting May 31, 2019.”The BCCI will not tolerate such violations in the future and strict actions will be taken if a player is found violating the BCCI rules and regulations.”Rinku, who made his name initially as more of a white-ball dasher, had a breakout season in the Ranji Trophy this past season, piling up 953 runs in ten games at an average of 105.88 with four centuries and three fifties. He was the third highest run-getter overall.
