Leeds: Farke Can Find Dream Piroe Partner With Swoop For 6 ft 1 "Phenomenal Talent"

Leeds United officially completed their fifth signing of the summer transfer window on Thursday as they announced the arrival of Joel Piroe from Championship rivals Swansea.

Who have Leeds signed this summer?

Whites boss Daniel Farke had already bolstered his side with the additions of Joe Rodon on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, and Ethan Ampadu, Karl Darlow, and Sam Byram on permanent deals.

Piroe has now joined that list for a reported fee of £10m from the Swans to improve the German head coach's options at the top end of the pitch this season.

That may not be the end of their business, however, and another player who could be on his way to Elland Road if the club opt to follow up on their interest in him is USMNT star Josh Sargent.

How good is Josh Sargent?

The 23-year-old striker has proven to be a consistent Championship performer so far this season and one that could come in and strike up an exciting partnership with Piroe at the top end of the pitch.

Sargent is adept at playing out wide on the right or as a centre-forward, and this means that Farke could utilise him in tandem with the Dutch marksman, or as competition for him throughout the year.

The Norwich City star, who was signed by the German boss in 2021, has enjoyed a terrific start to the season as he has averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.27 and chipped in with two goals alongside one assist in three appearances.

This comes after the former Werder Bremen hotshot racked up 13 goals and five ‘big chances’ created in 37 Championship starts for the Canaries throughout the 2022/23 campaign.

Norwich striker Josh Sargent.

These statistics show that the American international has the quality to provide goals and assists at an impressive rate at this level, which could provide Farke's team with a significant boost as Leeds struggled for goals in the Premier League last term.

No current Whites forward managed more than five top-flight strikes and having Piroe and Sargent up front could allow supporters to leave any worries about a lack of a goal threat behind as they are both proven Championship scorers.

The £10m-rated Dutchman plundered an outstanding 19 goals for Swansea during the 2022/23 campaign and that came after he racked up 22 league goals during the previous season.

Piroe knows how to find the back of the net on a regular basis from a centre-forward position and has the quality to be Farke's outstanding goalscoring option at the top end of the pitch, if he is able to translate his form for the Swans over to Yorkshire.

Sargent's versatility means that he could slot in alongside the 24-year-old hotshot and this could provide Leeds with a fearsome duo in the final third, as opposition defences would have two huge goal threats to worry about each match, which was far from the case for the club last term with their lack of consistent goalscorers.

Therefore, the 6 foot 1 finisher, who was recently described as a "phenomenal talent" by teammate Ashley Barnes, could be a fantastic signing for the Whites and Farke should pursue a deal for his former striker in spite of the signing of Piroe.

People expect a lot out of me – Pujara

After a lean start to the 2017-18 season, the India batsman hit back with a record-breaking double-century and says he is in a good frame of mind ahead of the Sri Lanka series

Cheteshwar Pujara’s ability to bat hours on end, scoring massive amounts of runs, has become his signature. He has played the longest innings by an Indian in Tests, and his tally of 1611 runs last season is a national record in first-class cricket. So when he goes through a lean patch, questions are raised. In August, after the end of a productive series against Sri Lanka, Pujara went to play domestic cricket in England. He returned home with a top score of 34 in seven innings, and wasn’t his usual self in the Ranji Trophy either, where his first two innings yielded 35 and 13.”Sometimes, people expect a lot out of me because I have the habit of scoring big runs.” Pujara told . “The expectation is that I should score a hundred every second or third innings. It is difficult to always fulfil that.”Pre-season runs are a vital part of Pujara’s success. Upon his return from a difficult tour of the West Indies in 2016, when he was dropped from the XI, he struck 166 and 256 not out in two Duleep Trophy matches. They were vital innings, he felt, and paved the way to his becoming the highest run-getter in the world in 2016-17.Now, with two weeks to go for the home Tests against Sri Lanka, Pujara made his 12th double-hundred, another national record. He followed up with an innings of 182.”The moment I start scoring big runs, as a batsman, my rhythm comes back and my concentration improves,” Pujara said. “Everything looks good. So, it is a perfect start before I head into the Sri Lanka series.”Cheteshwar Pujara recorded his 12th first-class double-century•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Pujara said that his low scores prior to his back-to-back hundreds weren’t due to a lack of form. “I was playing on some tough pitches in England. All the matches were on challenging pitches and most of the games were low-scoring ones. I accepted my failures and I did learn so many things out of it.”It wasn’t that I was going through a bad phase or that I wasn’t timing the ball well,” Pujara said. “It was just a time where I had to stay patient. I was playing on tough pitches and if I get a good ball, just accept it and learn new things, what are the things I can still improve on and then start scoring runs again.”When I came back to India, in the first game, I had a little bit of jet lag but I was batting well and got good start and got out playing a bad shot for 35 [against Haryana]. Even in the next game [against Jammu & Kashmir], I looked in good touch but I made a mistake and got out [for 13]. So, overall I knew I was batting well.”The gap between the end of the Sri Lanka series and the start of the tour of South Africa is short. India play their last match at home on December 24 and the Cape Town Test begins on January 5. Pujara, however, is usually picked only for Test cricket and the last Test against Sri Lanka ends on December 6. So he will have more time to prepare for South Africa”When you travel abroad, you have to alter a few things,” Pujara said. “Obviously, the basic things remain the same. You have to have different preparations depending on the country you are visiting. If you are going to South Africa, there are certain things that I know that I need to do to perform well there, and I will work on them. I have played enough cricket in England that when we go there [in July-August 2018], I know the things I need to do there.”

Newcastle Showing Interest In "Phenomenal" £9.45m Colossus

Newcastle United are now showing an interest in signing Blackburn Rovers defender Ashley Phillips, who will be available for just £2m when his release clause kicks in this Friday, according to a report from The Sun.

Who is Ashley Phillips signing for?

Reports from earlier this month indicated that Phillips was closing in on a move to Tottenham Hotspur, with journalist Charlie Eccleshare saying:

"Tottenham set to sign highly-rated 18yo centre-back Ashley Phillips from Blackburn for around £3 million. Understood it won't affect Spurs' plans to try and sign at least one senior CB. Phillips expected to have medical in next 24 hours before hopefully joining the tour."

However, there has been little progress since that point, and now The Sun are reporting that Newcastle could make a late move to sign the 18-year-old, with Blackburn still hoping to receive £9.45m if they are to sanction his departure.

Tottenham's stand-off with Blackburn is set to come to an end this week, as a £2m release clause kicks in this Friday, which would allow Ange Postecoglou to snap up the youngster for a heavily reduced fee.

However, Spurs are waiting to see whether Blackburn find another buyer before that point, with the Magpies showing an interest, although they are yet to make an offer above what their Premier League rivals are currently willing to pay.

As such, a move to north London appears to be the most likely outcome at the moment, however there is still time for Eddie Howe to make a late swoop and hijack the Lilywhites' deal, if he is willing to outbid them.

For now, the Blackburn defender is set to continue training ahead of the Championship opener against West Bromwich Albion, but he is unlikely to be risked in games in case of injury.

Who is Ashley Phillips?

Despite the fact he is just 18-years-old, the youngster has already started to gain some first-team experience with his current club, making 14 appearances for the Rovers, including eight in the Championship during the 2022/23 campaign.

The youngster has predominantly played at centre-back throughout his short career so far, where his 6 foot 4 frame would undoubtedly be useful for Newcastle, and former manager Tony Mowbray has also praised his ability in possession, saying:

"He's 6ft 4', he's fast, mobile and can pass it really well. He can use both feet, he's composed. Ash is just a phenomenal young boy; if you were to create a defender in the mould of how you would want one, this kid has got every attribute."

It is still very early days for the Blackburn starlet, given that he only turned 18 last month, but he is showing all the signs that he could go on to be a top player in the future, and it is exciting news that Newcastle are still in with a chance of signing him.

That said, Tottenham appear to be in pole position at the moment, and the Magpies will need to move swiftly if they are going to hijack the deal for Phillips.

The teenager could be worth a push from Newcastle, though, given his clear potential to be a brilliant defender.

£40m Newcastle Deal Not Close Yet But Interest Is There

Despite Newcastle United wanting Harvey Barnes, a deal is not "as close as some people have suggested", according to Pete Graves.

Is Barnes joining Newcastle?

There were not too many in Leicester City blue that stood out for the right reasons last season as the Foxes suffered relegation to the Championship, but Barnes still managed to put up some good numbers in a disappointing campaign.

Netting 13 goals in 34 Premier League games was a very respectable total for the 25-year-old last season, who enjoyed the best goalscoring season of his professional career in spite of the underwhelming performances of those around him.

That is not to say Barnes was perfect last season, but he certainly did his best to ensure that the Foxes beat the drop.

Such an impressive output teamed with the fact that he is now playing for a Championship club has understandably drawn interest from some of the Premier League's top sides, with Newcastle at the front of the queue.

The Magpies have been strongly linked with the left-winger, with some reports even suggesting a deal is done, but Sky Sports' Graves believes a transfer is still some way off.

Speaking on the Transfer Talk podcast, Graves said: "Look, I think Harvey Barnes is definitely on the list. I don't think it's as close as some people have suggested, but there's definitely an interest from Newcastle.

He added: "I think Harvey Barnes, before I go on too long, is a target. I think that he scored 13 goals in the Premier League last season and to put that into perspective that is more Premier League goals than Allan Saint-Maximin has scored since arriving in England.

"So, there's been talk that Allan Saint-Maximin could leave the club, talk of interest from Saudi Arabia, and it would be for me quite an obvious replacement. Saint-Maximin would go and Harvey Barnes would come in and he would provide competition on the wings. So, yeah, it's one I can see happening but I don't think it's close."

One potential reason why the deal could be some distance away is Leicester's large valuation of the one-cap England international, with the Foxes having reportedly slapped a £60m price tag on the winger last summer to fend off Newcastle interest. However, that fee may be lower this time round, something which Eddie Howe could capitalise on.

Barnes, who came through the academy at Leicester, was part of the famous 2021 FA Cup winners and has managed 45 goals and 32 assists in 187 games for the Midlands side.

Who are Newcastle signing?

Having already signed AC Milan's Sandro Tonali for approximately £55m, the Magpies are expected to continue investing in their squad over the summer window as they prepare for life back in the Champions League.

One area which Howe is believed to be looking to strengthen is at centre-back with Monaco's Axel Disasi emerging as a target in recent days. The four-cap French international is 25-years-old and has thoroughly impressed in Ligue 1.

The Magpies are also looking at reinforcing others defensive areas, chiefly right-back. As a result, links to Southampton's Tino Livramento have surfaced, despite the fact that the youngster missed all but two games for the Saints last season following a year-long cruciate ligament injury.

With the extra workload that comes with European football, Howe has to make sure his squad has strength in depth, something that was perhaps lacking at times last season.

Sunderland: Mowbray Risks First Transfer Howler With £5.2m Target

Sunderland have rightly been praised for the way they have gone about their transfer business so far this summer, but they potentially risk making their first howler in their ongoing pursuit of Croatian forward Matija Frigan.

What players have Sunderland signed?

The Black Cats have so far signed Nectarios Triantis, Luis 'Hemir' Semedo, Jenson Seelt and Jobe Bellingham, with each of those aged 20 or under as the Wearside outfit look towards the future.

However, manager Tony Mowbray has made no secret of his desire to bring in another attacking player after seeing Amad Diallo return to parent club Manchester United, whilst Ross Stewart will miss the start of the new season through injury.

Having missed out on a deal for Coventry-bound Ellis Simms, who impressed on loan at the Stadium of Light in the first half of last season, Sunderland have since switched their focus elsewhere.

According to Croatian outlet Sportske Novosti, the Championship outfit have already had a first bid of £3.4m turned down for Frigan, but they may now return with a follow-up offer.

However, given the possible size of the fee involved, plus the fact that 6 foot 1 forward is untested outside of his homeland, it would surely make sense for Mowbray's men to look elsewhere.

Who is Croatian forward Matija Frigan?

Frigan has made 42 appearances in the Croatian top flight – 27 of those with current club Rijeka and the rest during a spell on loan at Hrvatski Dragovoljac in the 2021/22 campaign.

The 20-year-old frontman scored 13 goals in those 27 outings last season, with that a more-than-adequate return for a player of his age and highlighting that he is undoubtedly a big talent.

However, Football Insider previously reported that it will take an offer of £5.2m to persuade Rijeka – who is also supposedly wanted by Rangers – to cash in, which is a huge sum as far as Sunderland are concerned.

Sunderland loanee Ellis Simms.

Indeed, it was previously suggested that Sunderland were out of the running to sign Simms from Everton after Ipswich Town tabled a £4m bid earlier in the window.

The Englishman later joined Coventry City in a deal that could climb to £8m.

Frigan would have to be ready to hit the ground for that sort of fee and, while he has scored fairly regularly in the Croatian top flight, that country is ranked behind the likes of Sweden, Israel, Norway and Ukraine in terms of coefficient, giving a clear indication as to the quality of the league.

That is not to say there are no gems out there waiting to be signed at the right price, particularly given the likes of Josko Gvardiol and Luka Sucic have prospered in Europe, but Frigan still only scored at a rate of 0.59 goals per 90 minutes last season, as per FBref.

To give that some perspective, Stewart scored at a rate of 0.86 goals per 90 for Sunderland in the Championship.

Whilst the Croatia U21 international is clearly a talent – a "very interesting" one in the view of football talent scout Jacek Kulig – Sunderland would be better suited to spending their money on a more tried and tested option this window as they look to improve on last season's sixth-place finish.

Whatmore to coach Kerala in 2017-18

Dav Whatmore has signed a six-month deal as head coach of Kerala

Shashank Kishore13-Apr-2017Dav Whatmore has signed a six-month deal as head coach of Kerala. The formal announcement was made by the Kerala Cricket Association in Kochi last week. He will start mid-September and will likely see out the entire 2017-18 domestic season. Apart from coaching the senior team, Whatmore will also be involved in KCA’s junior cricket programmes and work closely with coaches in charge of the Under-23 team.”It’s important to build a system which can then help extend growth within the game across the state. That is what I’m looking forward to doing,” Whatmore told ESPNcricinfo. “That said, it’s also important to bring in results along with development of these young players. It takes time and I’m confident this association will last more than just the six months we’ve agreed upon. But for now this is a good start.”Whatmore, whose coaching stint with Zimbabwe ended in May 2016, is currently based in India. He is on a three-year deal as a consultant with the Chennai-based Sri Ramachandra University, which has collaborated with his cricket academy – Whatmore Centre of Cricket. He will be assisted there by a team of coaches with whom he hopes to streamline talent across age-groups.”I’m focused on the development side of the game, but it so happened that I could combine that along with coaching an upcoming state side, which I found challenging. That explains my association with Kerala,” Whatmore said. “I’ll be working six months with SRU to help set up a system, and it so worked out that the domestic season in India starts only after that.”June to August is not a good time for cricket in Kerala with the monsoons. With this arrangement, we can also have the senior and junior Kerala teams train in Chennai at the SRU facility. That would also allow an opportunity to work not just with Kerala in the pre-season but also complete my initial commitment as far as setting up of a system in Chennai goes.”Kerala had a poor 2016-17 Ranji Trophy campaign in which they managed just one win in nine matches. Halfway through their campaign, the association sacked P Balachandran as head coach, citing “non-performance”, and replaced him with Tinu Yohannan, the former India fast bowler. Their poor form extended across formats – they finished fourth in the South Zone Inter-State T20s and failed to advance to the knockout stage of the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy.”It’s a completely different challenge because I don’t know much about the side, but what I do know is they’ve been struggling to make the step up as far as first-class cricket is concerned. Helping them graduate to the next level is a challenge that excited me,” Whatmore said. “There is plenty of potential within the state. Taking the lead in five out of the eight games says they’re doing something right. If you can do it in the first innings, surely there is potential, but players are getting lost somewhere. That is why the off-season is crucial.”Whatmore has previously coached four international sides, Zimbabwe most recently. He was in charge of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan prior to that. In India, he has been involved with the National Cricket Academy and the Under-19 team apart from coaching Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.

Williamson, Ferguson thump Bangladesh

Lockie Ferguson took two wickets off his first two balls in T20Is and helped restrict Bangladesh to 141. Williamson took over thereafter to seal a six-wicket win

Isam: de Grandhomme’s assault changed the game

Kane Williamson timed his unbeaten 73 beautifully to help New Zealand to a six-wicket win over Bangladesh in the first T20 in Napier. Along with Colin de Grandhomme, he rode out a early wobble as Bangladesh took three wickets in seven overs while defending 141.Williamson struck five fours and two sixes in his 55-ball knock, surviving two chances on the boundary that were down to errors in judgment by Soumya Sarkar and Imrul Kayes who stood too far inside the rope at deep midwicket and long-off respectively.Until 10.1 overs, Bangladesh were threatening New Zealand with a heist. Shakib Al Hasan had taken a stunning catch running from deep square leg to midwicket in the third over to get rid of Neil Broom. Mustafizur Rahman removed Colin Munro for a duck in the next over and Shakib had Corey Anderson caught at long-off. When Sarkar and Mashrafe Mortaza combined to run the debutant Tom Bruce out at the start of the 11th over, the visitors might have felt on top.But de Grandhomme slammed a big six over midwicket in the same Mashrafe over before Williamson struck Shakib for a four – the result of Sarkar standing too far inside – and six. He reached his sixth fifty in T20Is before de Grandhomme thumped two more sixes, the last one over cover to seal the game with 12 balls to spare. The pair added 81 runs for the fifth wicket with de Grandhomme unbeaten on 41 off 22 balls.Earlier Mashrafe believed he was giving his batsmen the best use of the flat McLean Park pitch but apart from Mahmudullah, who reached his third T20 fifty, the rest responded poorly.Kayes edged Matt Henry in the second over and things didn’t get much better after that as Bangladesh lost three wickets in five balls towards the end of the Powerplay.Tamim Iqbal was the first to go, giving debutants Ben Wheeler and Tom Bruce their first wicket and catch respectively. Then Lockie Ferguson became only the second bowler ever to take wickets off his first two balls in T20Is. Sabbir Rahman popped a full toss to mid-on rather tamely but Sarkar was undone by a sharp outswinger that took the edge to gully. The hat-trick ball was a yorker but Mahmudullah jammed down bat just in time. After the worst ODI series of his career with scores of 0 1 and 3, Mahmudullah bounced back with 52 off 47 balls that included three fours and three sixes over midwicket, long-on and long-off. He added 37 and 32 for the fifth and sixth wicket partnerships with Shakib Al Hasan and Mosaddek Hossain, who struck two sixes in his 17-ball 20. New Zealand had to wait until the final over to get rid of Mahmudullah. Ferguson was the successful bowler again, finishing with 3 for 32.Left-arm quick Wheeler also made an impressive debut with his two wickets while de Grandhomme, Santner and Henry picked up one each.

No other member of the invitational side made it to double figures. The swift collapse of the CA XI innings left the tourists with the remainder of the evening for a second innings, in which Rilee Rossouw made the most of his chance to post a swift 77 before retiring.Faf du Plessis, Temba Bavuma and JP Duminy were all able to indulge in some gentle centre-wicket practice before the close. Arjun Nair, the young NSW spinner, was able to put in a second economical display while also deceiving Bavuma.
