Emery could boldly bench McGinn & unleash Aston Villa’s "sensational" gem

Aston Villa kicked off their 2024//25 Premier League season with a highly impressive win over West Ham United last weekend

Unai Emery’s side looked like they were going to have to settle for a share of the spoils against the Irons, that was until Jhon Duran popped up with just 11 minutes left to score the winner.

In what was a tricky opening match, Villa securing all three points will give them plenty of confidence heading into their game against Arsenal this evening.

There could be a few changes to the starting XI, however, as some of the players failed to really shine last weekend, most notably John McGinn.

John McGinn’s game in numbers vs West Ham United

The Scot started on the left of a three-man attack to support Oliie Watkins yet struggled to really make much of an impact during his time on the pitch.

During his 62 minutes on the field, McGinn completed just 12 passes, took 26 touches and attempted zero dribbles.

The midfielder also lost possession three times while delivering zero accurate crosses, and it was clear his spell out wide wasn’t going to carve any openings for Watkins.

Emery’s attacking players will need to be excellent from the very first whistle against the Gunners today to stand any chance of securing a positive result. Could this see McGinn potentially dropped from the starting XI for a homegrown talent?

The player who could replace McGinn vs Arsenal

Ramsey was brought on for the ineffective McGinn with just half an hour of the game to be played last weekend, making a wonderful impact.

He was the one that set up Duran to score what turned out to be the winner, while he also was successful with 100% of his passes, showcasing his excellent distribution.

The Englishman looked much brighter going forwards than McGinn, as he created a big chance, made one key pass and succeeded with 100% of his dribble attempts during his second half cameo.

This is the sort of performance that Emery will be demanding from the start as the Gunners travel to the Midlands this evening, which could see Ramsey given a starting berth.

The Athletic journalist Seb Stafford-Bloor lauded Ramsey as “sensational” back in 2021, but the academy graduate didn’t enjoy the most productive of spells last term as he missed 35 matches due to a series of niggling injury issues.

Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey

His impressive showing on the first weekend of the season will surely have bolstered his confidence, knowing that he is back fit and firing, ready to establish himself in Emery’s side.

The clash against the title-chasing Gunners will be difficult, but Villa did win 2-0 during their last meeting, a result which arguably cost the Emirates side the 2023/24 Premier League title.

If they channel this type of performance tonight, then there is no reason why they cannot replicate that stunning result from the end of last term.

Willing to pay: Aston Villa want £30m "beast" who'd send Duran packing

Sean Williams' unbeaten 54 carries Zimbabwe into lead after Amir Hamza's four strikes

Blessing Muzarabani and Victor Nyauchi had earlier combined to bowl Afghanistan out for 131

Firdose Moonda02-Mar-2021Stumps Fifteen wickets fell on an eventful first day in Abu Dhabi, where Zimbabwe edged their noses in front in the first Test against Afghanistan. Their seamers shared eight wickets between them to dismiss Afghanistan for their fourth-lowest Test total, before a 71-run fifth-wicket stand between Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza steadied Zimbabwe from 38 for 4. But by the time the day ended, Williams’ fourth Test half-century had put them in the lead.On a green-tinged pitch that assisted the quicks early on but started to turn later in the day, batting is expected to only become more difficult so any lead Zimbabwe can get is likely to be valuable. And they may be able to build one against a depleted Afghanistan attack. Their only seamer Yamin Ahmadzai left the field with what looked like an ankle injury during his tenth over, which was the 31st over in the Zimbabwe innings.Ahmadzai did not get the benefit of morning conditions, where there was movement through the air and off the seam and extra bounce for the tall Blessing Muzarabani, whose strikes bookended a disappointing effort from the Afghanistan line-up. Six of their batsmen were caught behind the wicket and their innings was littered with loose strokes pointing to deficiencies in defence and temperament, or at least a lack of match practice in the longest format.Though they avoided sinking to their lowest Test score of 103, their final total will hardly be any consolation, especially knowing that their two wins in this format – against Bangladesh and against Ireland – have come when they totalled over 300 in the first innings. Theirs is also the lowest total by an opposition against Zimbabwe since West Indies’ 128 in Bulawayo in 2003.Muzarabani, playing in his first Test since the day-night game against South Africa in 2017, became the first Zimbabwe bowler to take a wicket with the first ball of a Test when he bowled debutant Abdul Malik with a ball that moved into him and took the inside edge on to the stumps. Malik’s was the 33rd instance of a batsman being dismissed off the first ball of a Test. His wicket brought Afghanistan’s only Test centurion to date, Rahmat Shah, to the crease, who reached 300 runs in the format with a straight drive down the ground, but lasted just five more balls before Muzarabani got one to move away slightly, with a fine outside edge carrying to Regis Chakabva.Muzarabani’s early burst was well-supported by his new-ball partner Victor Nyauchi, who ensured the third-wicket stand did not grow beyond 29, which turned out to be the highest of the Afghanistan innings. He had Munir Ahmad caught at slip reaching for a wide delivery. Ibrahim Zadran, who was Afghanistan’s best batsman in the opening session and was strong on the square drive, went the same way three overs later when he attempted a drive off a Nyauchi ball that moved away to be caught in the gully. Nyauchi had further success before lunch when he bowled Hashmatullah Shahidi with an inswinging yorker that snuck through the bat-pad gap, sending Afghanistan into the lunch break on 85 for 5.Blessing Muzarabani became the first Zimbabwe bowler to strike with the first ball of a Test•Afghanistan Cricket BoardMuzarabani followed up his eight-over morning spell by returning immediately after the interval and struck in his second over. Asghar Afghan fished at a full ball outside off and got an outside edge to give Chakabva a simple catch. Top-scorer Afsar Zazai played some eye-catching shots – including the leg glance and the cut – to take Afghanistan over a hundred, but eventually edged Donald Tiripano to Chakabva while defending inside the line.Zimbabwe only found use for spin in tandem in the 41st over when Raza joined Williams in the attack. Raza also found extra bounce and had Abdul Wasi caught at short leg as it took the shoulder of the bat when he tried to defend. In the next over, Ahmadzai holed out off Williams to mid-on, and the captain then took himself out of the attack so Muzarabani could finish off. Zahir Khan was caught at third slip to give Muzarabani his first four-wicket haul. The total of 131 might leave Afghanistan ruing their inability to leave the ball as much as they should have or to spend time at the crease as their innings lasted just 47 overs. In response, Zimbabwe found themselves in early trouble when Kevin Kasuza was bowled off the fourth ball, which was an inswinging yorker from Ahmadzai. Then Tarisai Musakanda and Prince Masvaure both played for turn, but were out lbw to deliveries that went on with the arm from Amir Hamza. Masvaure faced 49 balls for his 15 runs and showed the kind of application many of the batsmen before him lacked. But he was followed to the crease – and the change room – by debutant Wesley Madhevere who was dismissed off the next ball, closing the face of his bat to a Hamza delivery that skidded on to the front pad. Without DRS, it was not possible to tell if the impact was outside the line, and Madhevere’s maiden Test innings ended up being a first-ball duck. With the ball turning and Hamza posing problems, Afghanistan may have seen the opportunity to run through Zimbabwe, but the experience of Williams and Raza kept them at bay. Williams’ back-foot play and Raza’s ease on the sweep were on display and though there were some nervous moments in their knock, both could have gone on to half-centuries. Raza began to chance his luck when he pulled Wasi to a vacant midwicket area and in the next over, sliced Hamza to deep point. Williams was more cautious, and with Ryan Burl, saw Zimbabwe through the final 20 minutes of play,

Arsenal struck gold on amazing star who’s worth way more than Lamine Yamal

In the world of football, Arsenal have always been regarded as an excellent club for young and exciting talents.

Be that Jack Wilshere in the early 2010s or Cesc Fàbregas in the mid-2000s, the Gunners have had at least a couple of standout youngsters in every generation in recent history.

However, one club that has probably got them beat when it comes to producing incredible prodigies is Barcelona, who actually had Fabregas on the books at the world-renowned La Masia before he opted to move to North London.

cesc-fabregas-arsenal-academy-transfer-arteta-edu-jack-henry-francis-wilshere

In fact, the Catalan giants look to have done it again, as the latest wonderkid grabbing the headlines is another one of theirs, Lamine Yamal, and by all accounts, the hype seems justified.

The incredible Yamal

Despite being just 16 years old – yes, 16 – Yamal already has 51 first-team appearances for Barcelona under his belt, in which he has racked up a tally of seven goals and ten assists.

Primarily a right-winger, the incredible youngster made his debut for the Catalans on the left when he came off the bench with seven minutes to go against Real Betis in the 32nd game of the 2022/23 La Liga season.

He wouldn't play another minute of first-team football for the rest of the campaign, but was given his first start in the second game of last season against Cadiz and looked at home from the first whistle.

His stock was already reasonably high a month or so ago, but following his simply astounding performances for Spain at the Euros this summer, his reputation has gone stratospheric – especially after that wonder goal he scored against France on Tuesday.

This fairytale rise from unknown youth player to preeminent wonderkid in world football has understandably seen his valuation skyrocket, with the Transfermarkt now pricing him at around €90m, which converts to about £76m, although given his ceiling, we'd be surprised if that number doesn't keep ticking up at a rate of knots.

That said, as outlandish as his potential price tag is for someone so young, Arsenal have an academy graduate of their own whose value is even higher than that of Yamal's.

Bukayo Saka's valuation in 2024

The Hale End graduate in question is, of course, Bukayo Saka, who has carried the torch of Arsenal youngsters thriving in the first team – to put it mildly.

In fact, the 22-year-old has arguably become the most important player at the club in recent years, and the fact he's already racked up a mammoth 226 first-team appearances at such an age is a testament to that.

In those appearances, the "legend in the making", as football talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, has scored 58 goals and provided 53 assists, meaning he's averaged a goal involvement every 2.03 games.

He's not just dazzled at the Emirates, either. He's already picked up 32 caps for England, in which he's scored 12 goals – including that screamer against Switzerland – provided six assists, and won two Player of the Year awards.

This absurd CV for a player who is still just 22 has seen Transfermarkt value him at a massive €140m, which is about £118m.

However, like in the case of Yamal, the Gunners would probably demand close to double that before they even considered cashing in on their talismanic winger.

Ultimately, the Barça youngster looks set for a simply astonishing career at the top of the game, but Arsenal can be happy in the knowledge that they have their own homegrown superstar in Saka.

Chelsea want to sign exciting PL star who could be their next Hazard

Ever since Eden Hazard left Chelsea Football Club, the Blues have struggled to find the perfect replacement for him. The Belgian was incredibly unique and no Chelsea player has truly managed to fill his boots when factoring in the way he played and the goals and assist numbers he put up.

Of course, since joining the club last summer, Cole Palmer has been a revelation, exceeding all expectations and becoming one of the best wingers in the Premier League. He scored 22 goals and registered 11 assists in just 34 top-flight games last term, and yet he did not feel like the replacement for the legendary Belgian, given their profiles are nothing alike.

The likes of Raheem Sterling and Mykhailo Mudryk have also joined the club since Hazard’s departure, a pair much more similar to the former Chelsea winger’s profile. However, they have never really found their feet at Stamford Bridge, with Sterling so far scoring just 19 times in 81 games in blue, and Mudryk 7 times in 58 games.

It is undoubtedly frustrating that the Blues have never managed to find a replacement for one of the Premier League’s best wingers. However, they have recently been linked with one man who could finally become the Hazard replacement Chelsea have been crying out for.

Chelsea target Premier League winger

The player in question is Brighton & Hove Albion’s Japanese winger, Kaoru Mitoma. The 27-year-old had a tough time on the pitch in 2023/24, although he has proven his quality in the top flight plenty of times, and he has now been linked with a move away.

Interest in the winger from Chelsea was confirmed by journalist Ben Jacobs while in conversation with the London Is Blue podcast. Jacobs simply said “I’m told that Kaoru Mitoma is liked,” referring to the Blues' interest in the Seagulls attacker.

Brighton forward Kaoru Mitoma.

Chelsea’s interest in adding a new wide player to their squad has been clear throughout the summer transfer window. The Blues wanted to sign former academy player Michael Olise from Crystal Palace. However, The Athletic confirmed they pulled out of the deal due to financial implications, with other clubs bettering their offer.

Thus, they have seemingly switched their attention to Mitoma, and appear to be the only side interested in signing him at this stage, unlike the deal for Olise. Whilst a price has not been made clear, Football Transfers values him at £17.9m, although it could take more money to tempt Brighton into a sale. Indeed, Mitoma’s contract does not expire until 2027.

Why Mitoma can be the Hazard replacement

Mitoma’s 2023/24 campaign was slightly disappointing given his obvious quality. Firstly, injuries hampered his season, with a back injury meaning the winger hasn't featured since 18th February.

However, the Japan international did feature 19 times under Roberto De Zerbi, who is now the manager of French giants Marseille after leaving Brighton at the end of the season. In those 19 games, he scored three goals and registered four assists, still pretty respectable numbers.

With that being said, Mitoma did not really hit the heights he did in his debut campaign two seasons ago. In 33 games, he scored seven times and registered six assists, only beaten on combined goal involvements by Pascal Gross with 17 and Solly March with 14, as per Sofascore. De Zerbi described him as Brighton's "top player" when his contract extension was announced in October.

Given those numbers, it may seem surprising that the man touted to replace Hazard at Stamford Bridge is a winger with just 10 goals and 10 assists in his Premier League career. The former Belgium captain notched 85 goals and 54 assists in 245 games in the top flight of English football.

However, when you think of the Belgian, the first thing that may come to mind is his electric dribbling ability. Think how easily he would glide past opponents by using his low centre of gravity and his impressive strength to ride challenges from oncoming defenders.

Few players in the Premier League’s history are better dribblers than the Belgian. In fact, as per Statsmuse, the winger completed the most dribbles in the 2017/18 season with 118, and in the 2018/19 season with 139. He was simply electric.

With that in mind, there is perhaps no one better to replace Hazard than a man with a PhD in dribbling. Like the former Chelsea number seven, Mitoma possesses a bag of tricks, and the ability to burst away from defenders with a quick change of direction and accelerate off into space. The pair are also both two-way wingers, confident of going on the inside of a defender and driving towards the box, or the outside by taking it to the touchline and looking for a cross.

Indeed, Mitoma’s dribbling ability is also reflected in his stats. During the 2022/23 season, his only uninterrupted campaign in the top flight, the Japan international averaged 5.55 progressive carries per 90 minutes, which ranked him in the top 4% of wingers. That season, Mitoma also averaged 3.3 carries into the penalty area each game, which placed him in the top 3%.

Whilst Mitoma does not quite have the same number of goal involvements as the legendary Hazard, he could still become the direct replacement for the winger. They are stylistically very similar; excellent ball-carriers who are direct and run at opponents one-on-one, with superb close control and lightning-quick acceleration.

Replacing a player like Hazard is not easy in the slightest, as Chelsea have proven in the last few seasons. Even though Mitoma’s goal involvement numbers do not touch the record of the former Blues winger, who knows how much he could explode under Enzo Maresca? It could finally be the signing that sees Chelsea replace Hazard and the catalyst for the Blues to climb back to the top of English football.

Liverpool now want "talented" £42m history-maker in long-term VVD solution

With Virgil van Dijk's current Liverpool contract coming to an end this time next year, the Reds reportedly want to sign a long-term replacement in the form of a player who recently made history for his current club.

Liverpool transfer news

There's no need for Liverpool to panic over the short-term future of their captain quite yet. The Dutchman has made it clear on more than one occasion that he is keen to stay put at Anfield, saying recently via The Metro: "I still have a year left on my contract. I am club captain and I have made it clear I am there for the new coach and enthusiastic over the next season.

"Obviously, there will be a lot of changes but I am confident we will make a big success of it. I congratulated him of course and I'm really pleased for him and his family. We spoke about the team and the future, but now my focus is fully on the national team."

ByAngus Sinclair May 28, 2024

It is reportedly among Liverpool's priorities to get a new deal sorted for their star defender, but even with a new deal, they should be thinking about a long-term replacement now that he's 32 years old and not getting any younger. That, of course, is where Piero Hincapie could step in.

According to Christian Martin via El Futbolero, Liverpool now want to sign Hincapie in a deal worth €50m (£42m) this summer. The defender, alongside the rest of his Bayer Leverkusen teammates, impressed many by winning the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal in an invincible season in domestic football. In fact, their only defeat of the entire campaign came against Atalanta in the Europa League final to deny them an incredible invincible treble win.

Nonetheless, becoming the first-ever team to win the Bundesliga unbeaten has its own place in history and a place Hincapie played his part in earning.

"Talented" Hincapie can help fill long-term Liverpool void

Replacing Jurgen Klopp is a tough enough task in its own right, but if Liverpool then have to replace Van Dijk just one year later, they'll have to form quite the plan, which could see Hincapie arrive before crisis mode hits. The Ecuador international is still just 22 years old but has shown more than enough potential to earn such a move in the coming months.

With fewer starts, Hincapie managed to keep up with Liverpool's captain in a number of areas, sparking plenty of promise when it comes to the peak years of his career as a central defender.

Leverkusen will be frustrated if the defender does leave, however, with sporting director Simon Rolfes previously saying via the Bundesliga's official website: "Piero’s signing 18 months ago was an investment in the future, back then he was a talented central defender with really big potential.

"He became a key performer for our Werkself a long time ago, he has shown his international quality in the Bundesliga, in the Champions League and recently at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Piero is one of the key elements in the team who we can count on to help us achieve ambitious targets in the next few years."

The Reds’ Dutch coach has said of Chiesa: “It's true he had an ACL issue but the rest he didn't have big injuries, just minor like other players maybe. I trust my performance staff, he is not the only winger we have, we have others, so if he is not available at certain moments we have others and there are enough players to choose.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

While Chiesa’s injury record is mixed at best, there is no questioning his quality. Liverpool are delighted to have him on board and expect a debut to be made after the September international break. Slot added on his newest recruit: “I'm excited, if we sign someone who can help us and improve the squad, of course you're excited to get him in. One of the best things of working here is the culture of this team; they work so hard to achieve their goals and I think it is important the first player you bring in has the same culture. He works really hard on and off the pitch, he can score goals and is aggressive off the ball and he can play so many positions, an interesting signing. We will take care of him because he hasn't trained much but we have good performance staff to build him in the right way and we can see his quality in the near future.”
