What Steve Parish is doing to stop Oliver Glasner from joining RB Leipzig

Steve Parish is now making progress in contract talks with a key Crystal Palace figure, according to a recent report.

Crystal Palace continue search for new sporting director

The Eagles announced last week that sporting director Dougie Freedman would be leaving Selhurst Park to pursue a move abroad after joining the club in 2017. That means Palace have been looking for a replacement for the Scot, and several names have been linked to the vacancy.

Glasner gives green light for 45 y/o to replace Freedman at Crystal Palace

A new name has emerged as the frontrunner to become Crystal Palace’s new sporting director.

ByBrett Worthington Mar 20, 2025

It’s been reported by Sky Sports that Palace have drawn up a shortlist of options to replace Freedman, and those options consist of Middlesbrough’s Kieran Scott, who has been key in their recent success in the transfer market, Lee Dykes of Brentford and Iain Moody, who has worked at Palace before but had to resign back in 2013 due to alleged inappropriate texts.

A new name was then thrown into the mix, as Tim Steidten was named to be in pole position to become Palace’s new sporting director. The German has recently left West Ham under a bit of a cloud, but that has put off the South Londoners, despite Oliver Glasner giving his go-ahead to the appointment.

Parish looking to seal new contract for Glasner amid RB Leipzig interest

While the Eagles continue their search for a new sporting director, Football Insider reports that Crystal Palace are progressing in finding an agreement with Glasner over a new contract.

Crystal Palace manager OliverGlasnerbefore the match

The report states that Palace are looking to tie Glasner down to a new contract after the Austrian managed to turn the season around. He has recently been named as someone who is of interest to Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, who are looking for a replacement for Marco Rose, and the Eagles are keen to end that speculation, as talks between all parties are ongoing over a new deal.

Given Freedman’s exit from Selhurst Park, Parish wants to avoid any more upheaval ahead of the summer transfer window and therefore wants Glasner’s future to be resolved quickly. The 50-year-old will enter the final year of his contract at the end of this campaign, and it is reported that he is happy at Selhurst Park, but he will look to seek assurances that the club will try to keep their best players and build on their success.

This comes at a time when defender Marc Guehi continues to be linked with a move to Premier League teams, and midfielder Adam Wharton is also a player who is on the radar of Manchester United and Manchester City.

Both players are important to Glasner, and he will know that if these players leave the club, it will only make his job harder next season, so it will be interesting to see if the boss extending his stay goes hand in hand with any player contract renewals.

Rest of India lift Irani Cup after Madhya Pradesh collapse for 198

Mukesh Kumar and Atit Sheth dismantled MP’s middle order before Saurabh Kumar and Pulkit Narang ran through the tail

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Mar-2023Mukesh Kumar and Atit Sheth dismantled Madhya Pradesh’s middle order before Saurabh Kumar and Pulkit Narang ran through the tail to help Rest of India complete a 238-run win and lift the Irani Cup just before lunch on the final day in Gwalior. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored 213 and 144 across the game, was named the Player of the Match.Even though Navdeep Saini took just one wicket, he was the one who started MP’s slump. Himanshu Mantri resumed his innings on 51 but Saini had him caught behind with the third ball of the day. Mantri, however, expressed his disappointment with the decision, had a chat with the umpires and took a while before dragging himself to the pavilion.Yash Dubey, fresh off a first-innings century, started positively with a couple of fours but had his off stump cartwheeled by Mukesh. Aman Solanki joined Harsh Gawli, who was looking solid, and the two put up a 49-run stand for the fifth wicket. Solanki punished the odd overpitched deliveries, and the tiring pacers were removed from the attack. Then he hit Saurabh and Sheth for three boundaries in the space of five balls but a couple of overs later, Sheth knocked him over. In his next over, Sheth nicked off Saransh Jain to make it 151 for 6.Gawli and Ankit Kushwah took the side to 188 before Narang trapped Gawli lbw with an offbreak that turned viciously and kept low. MP lost their last four wickets, all to Narang and Saurabh, in 19 balls for just ten runs to end the proceedings.

Glenn Phillips outscores Sri Lanka in New Zealand's huge win

Sri Lanka had New Zealand 15 for 3 in the powerplay. But then they dropped Glenn Phillips, and it was all new Zealand from there. Phillips bashed 104 off 64 deliveries to almost single-handedly carry New Zealand to 167 for 7 (the next-highest score in the team was 22), before Trent Boult and Tim Southee put on a powerplay showcase, taking four wickets between them while the fielding restrictions were still on in Sri Lanka’s chase.Where New Zealand kept enough resources in store for a late-overs explosion, hitting 113 off the last 10, Sri Lanka squandered their batters before any sort of base could be established. They had crashed to 58 for 6 after 10 overs, and had no hope at all from there, eventually being bowled out for 102 as Boult finished with career-best figures of 4 for 13 and Southee claimed 1 for 12.This result took New Zealand to the top of the Group 1 table, with five points and an outstanding net run rate of 3.85. It sent Sri Lanka down to near the bottom of the table, with two points after three matches, and a poor NRR of -0.89. This means New Zealand are in an excellent place to not only qualify for the semi finals but also finish top of their group. Sri Lanka, however, will find a semi-finals spot incredibly difficult to seize from here.Phillips gets dropped
We’re not out to make Phillips’ century seem unearned, because of course it was. But had Pathum Nissanka held a sitter off Phillips in the seventh over, off the bowling of Wanindu Hasaranga, Phillips would have been out for 12 off 15, and New Zealand would have been 29 for 4. Phillips was also dropped for 45 off the 38th ball he faced – Dasun Shanaka unable to hold on to a tough chance running in from long off.Glenn Phillips hit four sixes and ten fours in his innings of 104•ICC via Getty Images

Phillips’ spectacular hitting
Sri Lanka kept taking the pace off the ball to Phillips, and in the best moments in this outstanding knock, he kept bullying the bowling over the boundary, mostly with brute strength. His successive sixes off Maheesh Theekshana in the 17th over, were especially brilliant. He first backed away to blast Theekshana high over wide long-on for six, and when the bowler pulled back the length next ball, Phillips backed away and bullied him into the sightscreen with a flat bat. All up, Phillips hit four sixes – the others coming off seam bowling – in addition to 10 fours. One of those fours was the murderous pull that got him to his second T20I century, and the second for New Zealand at a World Cup. The key partnership of the innings was Phillips’ stand of 84 with Daryll Mitchell, which helped raise New Zealand from the depths. Mitchell contributed 22 off 24; Phillips 59 off 40.Boult and Southee carve up the top order
Signs were not good for Sri Lanka when Southee opened with a wicket-maiden, bowling four swinging, dot balls to Nissanka, before the batter was stressed into attempting a weird leg-side heave which ended with him being trapped lbw. It got worse when Trent Boult claimed two wickets in the next over, having Kusal Mendis caught behind off the outside edge, before bowling Dhananjaya de Silva off the inside edge .In Boult’s second over, Charith Asalanka sliced one to backward point, where Finn Allen took a low catch. This left Sri Lanka at 8 for 4 after four overs. Despite Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s 34 from 22, they did not look like ever launching a serious recovery.Sri Lanka’s excellent early overs
What Sri Lanka will rue most is that they let the game slip after making such a strong start. Theekshana swung one into Allen’s off stump in the first over. De Silva bowled Devon Conway in the third. Kasun Rajitha had Kane Williamson caught behind in the fourth. But where New Zealand would put on an outstanding fielding performance, Sri Lanka’s was awful. Beyond the dropped catches, there were fumbles in the outfield, mis-fields in the circle, and poor throws from everywhere. This went some way to deciding the game.

Gavaskar on Kohli: 'There is this anxiety to play at every delivery'

Former cricketer feels he might be able to help the out-of-form Kohli “particularly with regards to that off-stump line”

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Jul-2022Virat Kohli is desperately searching for big runs, and has developed an “anxiety to play at every delivery” as a result, Sunil Gavaskar feels.Kohli ended the white-ball leg of the England tour without a half-century. In the two ODIs, Kohli was out nicking behind off left-arm quicks Reece Topley and David Willey, and had scores of 16 and 17. In the two T20Is, he scored 1 and 11. In the Test match at Edgbaston earlier, Kohli chopped on in the first innings, and was out poking to the slip cordon in the second innings, returning scores of 11 and 20. Kohli’s century drought across formats has now extended to 79 innings.Related

Ganguly says Kohli 'has to find his way' to score again

Problem of plenty: How do India fit Kohli in their T20I XI?

“Having been an opening batter, having been troubled by that line, there are certain things that you try and do.” Gavaskar told . “It goes back to the fact that his first mistake turns out to be his last.”Again, just because he is not amongst the runs, there is this anxiety to play at every delivery because that is what batters feel, they have got to score. You look to play at deliveries that you otherwise won’t. But he has gotten out to good deliveries as well on this particular tour.”Gavaskar said he was open to helping Kohli work on his weakness.”If I had about 20 minutes with him, I would be able to tell him the things he might have to do,” Gavaskar said. “It might help him, I am not saying it will help him, but it could, particularly with regards to that off-stump line.”1:48

Does Kohli walk in to India’s full-strength T20I XI?

Kohli has been rested from India’s white-ball tour of the Caribbean. India’s next assignments after that is a short tour of Zimbabwe, followed by the Asia Cup T20s, possibly in the United Arab Emirates in August.Several former players, most notably Kapil Dev, have questioned Kohli’s place in the side, even as some younger players have stirred selection debates with their consistent performances. All through, the Indian think tank has backed Kohli, with Rohit Sharma, the captain, batting for him despite his form slump.”He [Kohli] has played so many matches. He is playing for so many years. He is such a great batsman, so he does not need reassurance,” Rohit said after the second ODI. “I pointed to this in my last press conference, too: form goes up and down, that is part and parcel of any cricketer’s career.”So, a player like him, who has played for so many years, who has made so many runs, who has won so many matches, he only needs one or two good innings [to bounce back]. That is my thinking, and I am sure all those who follow cricket will think similarly.”

Glenn Phillips fifty leads Gloucestershire to victory over Middlesex

Stephen Eskinazi’s 65* gives his side a chance but hosts win thriller in Bristol with one ball to spare

ECB Reporters Network03-Jul-2022

Glenn Phillips launches one down the ground•Getty Images

Glenn Phillips went out on a high, scoring a brilliant 52 from 39 balls as Gloucestershire successfully chased a victory target of 164 with one ball to spare to defeat Middlesex by five wickets in a dramatic finish to their final Vitality Blast match of the season at the Seat Unique Stadium in Bristol.Overseas star Phillips and Jack Taylor added 81 for the fifth wicket in nine overs as the home side recovered from 73 for 4 in the 11th over to set-up a grandstand finish. And Benny Howell finished things off in fine style, hitting Tom Helm for six off the penultimate ball to snatch a victory that sees Gloucestershire finish fifth in the South Group.Middlesex earlier won the toss and raised 163 for 4, Matt Holden contributing a quickfire 37 and Stephen Eskinazi posting a useful 65 not out. But Howell and Tom Smith returned tidy figures to keep the visitors within sight, both taking a wicket and conceding just 45 runs in eight overs between them.Holden provided Middlesex with a turbo-charged start to their innings, crashing 37 from 19 balls and dominating an opening stand of 57 in 4.3 overs with Eskinazi. The left-hander combined clean hitting with clever improvisation to accrue half a dozen fours and a six, taking advantage of some loose bowling to help the visitors raise 50 from 23 balls.Gloucestershire held their nerve, weathered the early storm and breathed a collective sigh of relief when Holden miss-timed a drive off Phillips and holed out to Tom Price at long-off. Smith had Joe Cracknell held at backward square leg on his way to figures of 1 for 22 from four overs, while Howell bowled John Simpson to reduce Middlesex to 74 for 3 in the ninth, at which point three wickets had fallen for the addition of 18 runs in four overs.Playing a captain’s innings, Eskinazi set his sights on carrying his bat, sharing a stand of 64 in 8.5 overs with Josh De Caires to repair the damage and at least ensure Middlesex posted a competitive total. It may not have been spectacular fare – his 50 occupied 46 balls – but his innings exerted a steadying influence upon a team that has struggled to find a winning formula in the short format this summer.Attempting to force the issue in the closing overs, De Caires skied Jack Taylor to Howell at short extra cover for 24 as Gloucestershire’s bowlers kept a lid on things, Howell returning impressive figures of 1 for 23 from four overs. Eskinazi finished unbeaten on 65 from 55 balls, managing just two fours and two of sixes in a pragmatic knock which proved effective rather than memorable.Gloucestershire’s reply made a stuttering start, openers George Scott and Chris Dent departing cheaply in a six-over powerplay that saw the hosts limp to 38 for 2 in the face of nagging accuracy from Max Harris and Tom Helm. Harris then accounted for James Bracey, the Bristolian holing out to deep mid-wicket in pursuit of a second successive maximum as the hosts slipped to 52 for 3 in the eighth over.Phillips and Miles Hammond advanced the score to 72 for 3 at halfway, at which point Gloucestershire required a further 92 runs to win at 9.2 an over. Under pressure to accelerate, Hammond promptly pulled Thilan Walallawita to deep mid-wicket as Middlesex further turned the screw. Chris Green, Luke Hollman and Walallawita took the pace off to good effect during the middle part of the innings as the required rate climbed to above ten an over for the first time.In his last appearance for Gloucestershire before teaming up with the New Zealand tourists, Phillips responded by driving Walallawita for six over long-on and then plundering another leg-side maximum off Jason Behrendorff, while Taylor played second fiddle and rotated the strike expertly to keep the home side in the hunt. With 31 needed off three overs and the fifth wicket pair well-established, Gloucestershire must have fancied their chances of completing the job. Pacing his innings to perfection, Phillips smashed Helm back over his head for a straight six as the target came down to 21 off two overs.Phillips went to 50 via 37 balls, but Green conceded just eight runs off the penultimate over, leaving Gloucestershire to score 13 off the last to win. Helm responded magnificently under pressure, having Phillips caught at deep mid-wicket to put the outcome in doubt. But Howell remained cool, crashing the penultimate delivery for an almighty six over long-on to win the day.

Imagine him & Delap: Ipswich could sign "world-class" Burns upgrade for £0

Kieran McKenna will be well aware that if his Ipswich Town side want to stay in the Premier League past this season they cannot be turned over like they did against Newcastle United on a regular basis.

The 4-0 loss the rampant Magpies handed to the Tractor Boys is the most depressing defeat the Suffolk side have had to endure since promotion, as Arijanet Muric’s poor showings continued in-between the sticks across what was a dismal performance overall from every Ipswich shirt.

Despite such a poor offering from the defenders in that sobering defeat, transfer rumours are beginning to circulate that Ipswich could be in the market for some reinforcements in attack this January.

Ipswich looking at "world-class" forward

As per reports from Spain last weekend, the relegation candidates are interested in signing Hakim Ziyech next month, with his contract potentially being torn up in January to allow him to move on from Turkish giants Galatasaray.

Ziyech will be well known to fans of the Premier League for his stuttering spell at Chelsea, but he could be a man reborn if he moves back to England under McKenna’s fresh management, with Mason Mount even boldly describing the attacking midfielder as “world-class” when the pair were together at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea forward Hakim Ziyech.

This undoubtedly would be a coup for the Suffolk side to pull off, with McKenna potentially winning himself another entertaining attacking option to play alongside Liam Delap, alongside also gaining another right winger that would be an upgrade on a waning Wes Burns.

What Ziyech could offer Ipswich

The Moroccan isn’t that fondly remembered at Chelsea, but he did show glimpses of his quality playing in West London that once made him a £33.3m buy from Ajax.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Overall, Ziyech picked up six goals and nine assists for the Blues in Premier League action alone, with McKenna not turning his nose up whatsoever at those numbers when you consider the dwindling returns of some Ipswich forwards this season away from a lethal Delap.

As can be seen by glancing at the table above, the ex-Manchester City ace is way out in front as Ipswich’s most potent player with a combined seven goals and assists for his team this season, with no right wingers even making the cut.

Burns, although he was key to Ipswich winning promotion last season, has notably struggled with the step-up in quality, with just one meagre goal contribution tallied up from his sparing game-time.

Hakim Ziyech Chelsea

Ziyech could well be the answer to Ipswich’s woes down the right channel, therefore, with McKenna managing to work his magic with former Chelsea players in attack in the past, as seen in him getting 12 goals and seven assists out of Omari Hutchinson who could well link up nicely with the daring free agent.

Amassing some incredible numbers in the Champions League too when on blistering form with Ajax, with a stunning ten goals and 11 assists tallied up in Europe’s elite competition, Ipswich would be fools not to try and win the 31-year-old if his contract in Turkey is ripped up.

Capable on his day of scoring audacious efforts like the one above, it remains to be seen whether Ziyech would be up for the slog of a relegation battle, as the Tractor Boys attempt to secure some statement buys to help them stay afloat in the top flight.

Ipswich could regret signing £30k-p/w dud who can't get a game

This new Ipswich Town recruit is yet to make a name for himself at Portman Road.
