From good to bad for de Kock and Beard

Plays of the Day from the Lions v Otago Champions League T20 match in Jaipur

Mohammad Isam29-Sep-2013The fumble
Almost everything that Quinton de Kock did in this game went right, except for the final ball. With Neil Wagner swinging hard at Sohail Tanvir, the Lions wicketkeeper fumbled the ball and gave away the bye that tied the game. Tanvir was left disappointed, and so was de Kock, who knew that it only took one little mistake to undo a lot of good work. And undo it did, as de Kock’s day got worse with the mix-up off the final ball in the Super Over. The stinger
Lions pace bowler Ethan O’Reilly is a bustling character who was in the thick of things for most of the Otago innings. He sent down a stinker in the 17th of the innings, a beamer that hit Ian Butler flush on his elbow. Butler crumbled in pain, with O’Reilly apologising right away. The physio came in and made sure he continued the innings. De Kock too was banged on the elbow in the penultimate over of the Lions’ innings. That time it was Neil Wagner’s beamer that struck him, but he ran the single and didn’t ask for the physio. He was nearing a second Twenty20 century, and probably didn’t want a break in concentration. The misfortune
Nick Beard started the day quite well, picking up two wickets off consecutive balls in his first over. He missed the hat-trick, but bowled a tight second over. It didn’t go too well for him thereafter, though, as he missed a catch of de Kock, helping the young opener to his half-century. Beard over-ran the ball at deep square-leg, had it go through his fingers and on to the boundary. It went further downhill for the left-arm spinner thereafter, as he gave away 16 in his next over and was not asked to finish his quota. The scud
Quinton de Kock’s stinging straight drive off Neil Wagner in the 19th over belied his physique. It was a power-packed shot which rushed past the bowler, the non-striker and the umpire, and struck the boundary board in a blink. He looks physically unthreatening for an opening batsman of this era but, today, several of his pull shots off the fast bowlers and against anything that was full from the spinners were as good as any from well-built batsmen.

Durability Sangakkara's forte

Kumar Sangakkara, the tenth batsman to reach 10,000 runs, stands out among Sri Lankan batsmen because of his strong performances in foreign conditions

Madhusudhan Ramakrishnan17-Feb-2012Until November 2011, Sanath Jayasuriya was the only Sri Lanka batsman in the elite 10,000-ODI-runs club. Just 11 matches after Mahela Jayawardene reached the mark against Pakistan, Kumar Sangakkara also achieved the feat, during his breezy knock of 30 against Australia in Sydney. Sri Lanka are thus the only team to have two current players with 10,000-plus ODI aggregates, and also the second team after India to have three players who have surpassed the landmark. Sangakkara, who has been the mainstay of Sri Lanka’s batting in Tests and ODIs along with the classy Jayawardene, reached the 10,000-run mark in his 315th ODI. He is the fastest to the mark among Sri Lanka batsmen, both in terms of matches and innings. While most Sri Lanka batsmen have struggled overseas over the years, the compact Sangakkara has dealt with foreign conditions a lot better, and averages close to 40 outside Sri Lanka.Overall, Sangakkara has a highly respectable record in ODIs, averaging 37.80 with 12 centuries and 67 fifties. However, what is surprising is that his away record is much better than his home one. In 106 home ODIs, Sangakkara averages slightly below 35 with just one century. In away matches, not only is his average much higher (39.29) but also his century tally (11). His away stats, however, are slightly skewed towards performances in the subcontinent. In the subcontinent, he averages 38.80 while scoring ten of his 12 centuries. Outside the subcontinent, he has done fairly well (average of 36.52) but has a poorer ratio of centuries to fifties (2:31) as compared to the corresponding number in the subcontinent (10:36). As is the case with most top ODI batsmen, Sangakkara has lifted his game in World Cups. Among Sri Lankan batsmen who have played at least 25 World Cup matches, his average of 45.04 is the second-highest behind Arjuna Ranatunga’s, and his aggregate of 991 runs is behind only those of Jayasuriya and Aravinda de Silva. He has no century in tournament finals but his average of 38.18 is marginally better than his overall ODI average.

In his first four years (2000-2003), he had an average of just 28.55 and a strike-rate of 69.39 in 96 matches, while scoring only two centuries. Things turned around after that though; in the next five years (2004-2008), his average went up to almost 41 as he scored eight centuries in 139 ODIs. His best year in the period was 2004, when he scored over 1000 runs at an average of 53.15 with one century and ten fifties. In 2008, he averaged 39.25 but scored four centuries in 27 ODIs. In the last three years (2009 onwards), his average and strike-rate have gone up to 42.50 and 78.48, but he has struggled to convert the starts into centuries (two hundreds in 80 matches). Between 2009 and 2011, when Sangakkara was the ODI captain, he scored 1756 runs at a high average of 47.45.

Both batsmen have close to 7000 runs in away matches and over 3000 runs in home ODIs. In away matches, both batsmen have the same number of centuries (11) but while Sangakkara has just one century in home ODIs, Jayawardene has four. Sangakkara has been the more successful player in Australia, averaging 38.72 to Jayawardene’s 32.94. Jayawardene has three hundreds in England but his average of 43.80 is lower than that of Sangakkara, who is yet to score a century there. In ODIs in South Africa and New Zealand, Sangakkara is comfortably ahead of Jayawardene, who averages just 17.45 and 20.42 respectively in each country. However, in the West Indies, Jayawardene has done much better, averaging 47.21 with a century and five fifties, while Sangakkara has struggled, scoring four fifties in 17 games and averaging 28.68.

He is one of only four players to score over 5000 runs at No. 3. Ricky Ponting leads the fray in terms of runs but Jacques Kallis’ average of 46.94 is the highest among batsmen with 4000-plus runs at No.3, and is followed by Brian Lara’s 45.84. Sangakkara averages a relatively lower 38.53 but has a strike-rate of 75.57, which is bettered only by Lara and Ponting, who have corresponding numbers of 85.98 and 80.82 respectively. However, Sangakkara’s century tally at No. 3 (5) is the second-lowest in the group and is better only when compared to Marvan Atapattu, who managed to score just four centuries batting at that position.

Sangakkara has relished the dual role and his run-tally as a wicketkeeper-batsman is second only to Adam Gilchrist’s. Among batsman-wicketkeepers with 4000-plus ODI runs, Sangakkara has an average of 39.50 which is bettered only by MS Dhoni, who has a stunning average of 51.41. By virtue of batting higher in the order, Sangakkara has scored ten centuries, which is behind only Gilchrist’s tally of 16, but his strike rate of 76.72 is well behind those of Gilchrist and Dhoni, who have corresponding numbers of 96.94 and 88.32.

Bangalore win papers over the cracks

Both sides came into the game with one win and four defeats behind them; both seemed afraid of victory

Rahul Dravid needs to sort out issues with the batting order and the constant shuffling has only exposed their weakness

There were times tonight when Bangalore Royal Challengers and Deccan Chargers felt like the resistible force and the movable object. Both sides came into the game with one win and four defeats behind them; both seemed afraid of victory. And, well though Praveen Kumar and Zaheer Khan bowled at the death, it seemed appropriate that the final nails were banged into the Hyderabadis’ coffin by two poor legbefore decisions – one each by Billy Doctrove and Suresh Shastri.Even then, there was time for a final twist as Anil Kumble, the most experienced man on either side, was hit for successive sixes by Sanjay Bangar with the Chargers requiring 18 off four balls. But each time the momentum appeared to swing one way in this match, it duly swung the other. “I thought, ‘he can’t do it again, can he?'” said Rahul Dravid, afterwards. He couldn’t: Bangar managed just a single off the game’s penultimate delivery and Arjun Yadav was unable to clear the ropes off the last.Fireworks went off around the Chinnaswamy Stadium even as the batsmen completed their forlorn single and Bangalore will be hugely relieved. “I thought we deserved a bit of luck today,” said Dravid. Perhaps. But the truth is his side could easily have lost.In a match riddled with doubt, Deccan Chargers appeared to be on their way to a much-needed win of their own while VVS Laxman – finally doing a decent impersonation of a Twenty20 batsman – and the prodigiously gifted Rohit Sharma were adding 96 for the third wicket in 11.4 overs. But with 30 needed off 19 balls and Bangalore shoulders preparing to slump yet again, Rohit plonked one down Wasim Jaffer’s throat at long-on, before Shahid Afridi fell to a stunning catch in the same position, this time by Dale Steyn. Then came the lbw howlers. There must have been some doubt in Doctrove’s mind before he dispatched Laxman as to whether the ball had pitched outside leg (it had, just). But Shastri’s decision to give out Scott Styris next ball to Zaheer was truly awful, the ball landing several inches outside leg. To lose to Rajasthan when Shane Warne butchered Andrew Symonds was hard enough; but this was sickening.”It’s disappointing to lose these close games,” said Laxman, before exaggerating by one the number of truly close games his side has actually been involved in. “We have lost three close ones and if they had been three wins, it would be a different story altogether. Rohit’s wicket was the key, but from the 16th over, we lost too many wickets. We’re just not able to finish things off at the moment.”The Royal Challengers can consider themselves fortunate to have come up against a side that currently lacks the killer instinct, because – as Dravid himself admitted – a total of 156 for 8 was at least 15 runs below par. This is hardly surprising, since the top order, now without the classy hitting of Ross Taylor, who has gone to play for New Zealand in England, still looks desperately unsettled. The constant tinkering with the batting line-up suggests all is not well. Five different batsmen – Jaffer, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Bharat Chipli, Praveen and Dravid himself – have formed four different opening partnerships, and together they have totalled 74 runs in 12.3 overs. That’s one run per ball – unacceptable when the fielding restrictions are in place for the first six overs of every innings – and a wicket on average at the end of the second over. This is not the stuff of which firm foundations are made. There’s more. No Bangalore player has yet made more than Jacques Kallis’ 54, against Delhi Daredevils. That’s the lowest high score of any of the eight franchises. Of the 37 scores in the competition of 50 or more, only three have come from the bat of a Royal Challenger. They are manifestly not pulling their weight, despite Dravid’s assertion last night that Jaffer has “always been a strokemaker” and has suffered from being pigeon-holed too early. It’s true that Dravid himself batted well at No. 6 for a 19-ball 26 – the role of an innings finisher surely suits him best – but you sense Bangalore will need to assign specific tasks to each of their top six for their remaining eight group games if they are to reach the last four.

'You have to evolve with the times' – Shastri, Ashwin back Impact Player rule

“You saw the number of tight finishes we had in last year’s IPL. So, you know, it has made a big difference”

Impact Player rule – should it stay or should it go?

The Impact Player rule in the IPL has not gone down too well with some current players and coaches, but former India coach Ravi Shastri is in favour of it, saying it has contributed to a number of thrilling finishes.”The Impact Player [rule] is good. You have to evolve with the times,” Shastri told R Ashwin on his Youtube channel. “You know, it happens in other sports as well. It’s got tighter finishes. You have to evolve with the times and I think it’s a good rule. You saw the number of tight finishes we had in last year’s IPL. So, you know, it has made a big difference.”While some – like India captain Rohit Sharma – feel that the rule is detrimental to the development of allrounders, Ashwin cited the example of Dhruv Jurel, who began his IPL career as an Impact Player in IPL 2023 and went onto make his Test debut for India within a year.”You know when any new rule comes in, there will be…people will try and justify why that’s not right,” Shastri said. “But in time when you see the scores – 200 and 190 – and then like you mentioned individuals grabbing that opportunity and making the most of it, people will start re-looking at how they think about it.”Related

Rohit on Impact Player rule: 'I'm not a big fan'

Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, said last week that the Impact Player rule is “not permanent” and that a call on its use in subsequent editions of the IPL will be taken after a discussion with stakeholders after the 2024 T20 World Cup.”Impact Player is like a test case. We have implemented it slowly. The biggest advantage of it is that two Indian players are getting a chance [in each game], which is the most important,” Shah had told reporters at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on Thursday. “We will consult with the players, franchises, broadcasters [and take a call]. This is not permanent [but] I am not saying that it will go.”[We’ll see] if it’s making the game more competitive or not. Even then, if a player feels that this is not right, then we will talk to them. But no one has told us anything yet, so it will be decided after the World Cup.”Rohit was the first high-profile Indian player to criticise the rule, which came into the IPL in 2023 after being trialled in the domestic Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament, allowing teams to bring in a 12th player at any point in a match to replace a player from the original XI announced at the toss.Among others to speak out against the rule were Axar Patel and Mukesh Kumar of Delhi Capitals (DC).DC head coach Ricky Ponting, however, had said he was happy for the IPL to retain the Impact Player if it was making the tournament a “better spectacle”. But from his perspective as a coach, he admitted he wasn’t too keen on the rule, calling it a “nightmare”.

Sutherland and Day take centrestage to lift Melbourne Stars to victory

Perth Scorchers had claimed four wickets for nine runs but the home side turned the tables

AAP29-Oct-2023Melbourne Stars 154 for 7 (Sutherland 49) beat Perth Scorchers 147 for 9 (Darke 45, Day 4-27) by seven runsAnnabel Sutherland’s late power hitting and smarts with the ball helped take the Melbourne Stars to a crucial seven-run WBBL win over Perth Scorchers. After Stars lost 3-0 midway through their innings at Junction Oval, Sutherland smashed 49 off 27 to help her side recover to 154 for 7.Sutherland then took 2 for 31, including the key wicket of Scorchers’ top-scorer Maddy Darke, to put paid to a late fightback. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Stars, who had been beaten by Adelaide Strikers twice and Brisbane Heat once in the past week and a half. And much like their other win this season over Sydney Sixers, they had player-of-the-match Sutherland to thank for it.With Stars battling midway through their innings, Sutherland swung the momentum when she hit spinner Lilly Mills for 22 off one over. The big over included a powerful blow back over Mills’ head for six, as well as three other boundaries against the spinner. After taking 2 for 41 herself, Mills eventually caught Sutherland with her hands over the long-on boundary rope late in the innings to put an end to the onslaught. But Scorchers were on the back foot from early in their chase, with left-arm spinner Sophie Day taking 4 for 27.Day’s wickets included key overseas marquees Sophie Devine and Amy Jones for 9 each, while she also removed Chloe Piparo and Amy Edgar.Rising talent Darke had threatened to keep Scorchers in the hunt with 45 off 33, but Sutherland had her caught on the rope in the 15th over during the power surge. The allrounder then removed Lisa Griffith next ball for a golden duck, taking the pace off as she delivered it out the back of her hand to have the right-hander swinging hard and caught at gully. From there the Scorchers fell well out of the contest and to a 2-2 record, with only 21 runs from the final over off Alice Capsey adding respectability to the scorecard.

Afridi, Wells snap Welsh Fire's winless streak

A half-century from Luke Wells, followed by two wickets in the first two balls of the innings for Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi set Welsh Fire on their way to a first Hundred victory since 2021.With just 40 balls per side, Manchester Originals fell nine runs short of Fire’s total of 94, despite Jos Buttler’s unbeaten 37 off 18, and Max Holden’s 37 off 18.Afridi set the tone at the top, while fellow Pakistan bowler Haris Rauf went for just 15 in the middle overs to put Originals behind the run rate.Fire’s total was built around a superb 57 off 23 by opener Wells, allowing celebrations at Sophia Gardens as the team started with a win after losing every game last season.

The match was reduced to a planned 40 balls per side in an hour of cricket, with a 10-ball powerplay, following on from the abandonment of the women’s game – which had been the first time a Welsh Fire match had been totally abandoned.Originals won the toss and unsurprisingly chose to bowl first. However, Fire opener Wells raced away against the pace of Josh Tongue, fresh from the Ashes, and then went after Josh Little. He took the early strike, but when Joe Clarke did get a chance, he hit Little straight to point for the first wicket to fall. However, Fire had already made 25 off 10 balls.Wells continued to dominate and find the gaps in the field, though Pakistan legspinner Usama Mir temporarily put the brakes on the scoring. However, he too went for big runs at the end, his last four balls going for 17.Wells would eventually depart for 57 off 23 balls, caught on the boundary by Jamie Overton off Little as he went for another six.Big-hitting David Willey was promoted up the order, while New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips took the initiative with 19 off 12.Fire would have wanted to top three figures, but had to settle with 94 off their 40 balls, Tom Hartley’s last five balls of the innings only going for seven runs and fetching the the wicket of Phillips.Related

A lot was going to depend on the openers Phil Salt and Buttler to counter the threat of Afridi, but the Pakistan seamer made an immediate impact, his first ball swinging in to trap Salt lbw, his second a carbon copy to get rid of Laurie Evans. Holden, however, found the swing easier to cope with as Afridi bowled 10 balls straight, conceding 24.Buttler started quietly before suddenly announcing himself with 10 runs off two balls from David Payne. He then smashed another huge six off Rauf. Despite that, Rauf only went for 15 off his 10 balls, leaving Originals needing 36 off the last 10 balls.Holden was well caught at deep point by Phillips off the bowling of Willey, but Paul Walter announced his arrival with a huge six over midwicket before departing next ball. It meant Buttler’s late assault was too little too late for Originals.
