Reliable transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano has shared the one Arsenal signing he thinks is a real "possibility" in this January transfer window.
Edu makes transfer plans for January
Led by sporting director Edu, the Gunners are always in a constant state of preparation for transfer windows and how best to strengthen Mikel Arteta's ranks.
£100,000-per-week star wants to join Arsenal with Edu swoop possible
He’s currently enjoying the season of his life.
ByEmilio Galantini Jan 5, 2024
"To work for a football club like Arsenal, it is always busy isn’t it," said Edu on Arsenal's transfer plans this window.
"You need to put in a lot of effort and energy and dedicate a lot of time, but of course in January and the summer, it does intensify a bit. We are prepared. We have big people around the club to support me and the decisions. We always have our targets – it is important to be prepared for every single scenario – that is very important.
"We have so many people working on one signing – we have people who are in recruitment, leader of operations and it’s a big team effort to sign one player so that is what makes me proud because the way we are working and connecting as a club, that is what makes me so proud because I am part of it."
However, after spending over £200 million in the summer transfer window, Arsenal are believed to be under FFP limitations over how much they can spend. Ideally, reports suggest Arteta wants a new striker, new midfielder and two new full-backs (Miguel Delaney), but Arsenal's finances make the January budget a limited one.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
The Gunners have been linked with the likes of Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz, Wolves winger Pedro Neto and Brentford star Ivan Toney in recent months, but Edu may have to be more selective in regards to who he brings in.
Arsenal are currently five points off league leaders Liverpool and have won just one in their last five top-flight matches, which makes the need for some fresh faces potentially the more prevalent.
Fabrizio Romano shares Arsenal signing "possibility"
Speaking on Kick, renowned transfer journalist Romano has moved to have his say on Arsenal's transfer plans for January.
The reporter has shared the one signing he thinks Arsenal could well make this window, with Romano stating Arsenal sealing a new full-back is very possible.
“A new full-back for Arsenal? Yes it is a possibility, it is a possibility for Arsenal to bring in a new full-back in January," said Romano this week.
"They have to see what opportunity they can find, if it’s a loan deal, but Arsenal are exploring options in that position, they are in the full-backs market, I can confirm that, there is a possibility, there is a chance, we will have to see, but I think it’s a possibility."
Arsenal have been forced to use both Ben White and Thomas Partey as makeshift right-backs at points this season, coming after summer signing Jurrien Timber suffered an ACL injury on his debut in August. Arteta is arguably short in that area, with Cedric Soares also thought to be an exit candidate this window, so it could be one to watch.
West Bromwich Albion's promotion credentials will be under the microscope this coming Saturday when Carlos Corberan's playoff-chasing Baggies face off against Kieran McKenna's Ipswich Town, the Tractor Boys loving life back in the Championship with the Suffolk club in second spot currently.
Corberan's men are way off Ipswich in terms of points in the division, but West Brom's focus will be fixed on trying to make it into the playoff positions this season – outside of the playoff picture at the time of writing owing to goal difference, Sunderland above the Baggies in sixth nervously looking over their shoulder to see what the West Midlands club does next.
West Brom's manager will have a number of selection calls to ponder over for the upcoming game at the Hawthorns, selecting the very best lineup he thinks can go toe-to-toe with the confident visitors in what is an exciting match-up on paper.
With that in mind, here is how Corberan could set his side up this weekend – with two possible alterations from the latest defeat to Southampton.
1
GK – Alex Palmer
West Brom goalkeeper Alex Palmer.
Everpresent in all of West Brom's 16 Championship games so far, Palmer starting against Ipswich Town will be one of the simpler decisions when it comes to team selection from Corberan's perspective.
Keeping seven clean sheets this season, only conceding 17 goals when he has been unfortunately beaten, the 27-year-old's position in the starting lineup is surely set in stone for Saturday.
2
RB – Darnell Furlong
Darnell Furlong will also be retained in Corberan's first-team plans for the clash against Ipswich, very rarely missing a game for the Baggies whether that be at the back or played slightly more forward in a right midfield spot.
He's featured in all 16 second-tier games for West Brom much like his teammate Palmer, a shoo-in for a starting position against the Tractor Boys.
3
CB – Kyle Bartley
Scoring against the Saints last time out – Bartley bundling the ball into the back of the net after a Brandon Thomas-Asante effort clattered the crossbar – the 32-year-old could be key at the back up against Ipswich's high-energy attacking line of Nathan Broadhead and George Hirst by successfully marshalling them out of the contest.
Averaging 3.8 ball recoveries per 90 minutes this season, according to Sofascore, Bartley will hope he can act as a Baggies brick wall when swarms of Ipswich attackers do come his way.
4
CB – Cedric Kipre
Missing from the West Brom starting eleven only once this campaign so far – benched when the Baggies played Millwall at the Hawthorns – Kipre should start this Saturday to take his season tally to 16 appearances.
Kipre has been a colossus in many of his performances, the Ivory Coast defender standing out in West Brom's 2-0 win over Coventry recently – blocking three shots to foil the Sky Blues and clearing the ball away seven times to consolidate a clean sheet, as per Sofascore.
5
LB – Conor Townsend
Corberan shouldn't have to make any changes in his defence, with Conor Townsend another trusted member of the backline at the Baggies.
Performing below his usual high standards in a West Brom strip away at St Mary's – the 30-year-old losing all six of his attempted ground duels – West Brom's Spanish manager will still stick by his full-back for the visit of Ipswich in the hope that he raises his performance level in such a high-octane contest.
6
RM – Grady Diangana
West Brom winger Grady Diangana.
Once on West Ham United's books as a youngster developing at the Hammers, Grady Diangana has since become a key player at West Brom with the 25-year-old entering his fifth successive season with the club this campaign.
Often blowing hot and cold as many exciting maverick-style players tend to do, West Brom's number 11 has two goals and three assists from 11 games played this season.
Two of those assists were notched up in just one game, Diangana a nuisance for the Hull City defenders all night in a 3-1 win at the Hawthorns over the Tigers.
7
CM – Okay Yokuşlu
West Brom's defensively sound Turkish midfielder should start again for the West Midlanders for the evening kick-off, Okay Yokuşlu solid in recent contests for Corberan's playoff-aspiring team.
In a 2-0 home win over QPR back in mid-October, the 29-year-old was no-nonsense in approach.
Tough into the tackle by winning three of his four ground duels, West Brom's number 35 excels at doing the dirty work in the centre of the park allowing other midfield options the freedom to get forward subsequently.
8
CM – Alex Mowatt
The first change Corberan could look to make for the game at the weekend could be starting Alex Mowatt over Nathaniel Chalobah, the former Leeds United man standing out when substituted on against Southampton.
Mowatt was a far more effective attacking presence than Chalobah when introduced, pushing his team further forward to attempt an unlikely comeback.
As per Sofascore, the 28-year-old had 44 touches from just 34 minutes on the pitch in a bid to leave his mark on the contest. Unfortunately for Mowatt and the rest of the team, he couldn't quite be the difference-maker but this individual display could see him start against Ipswich.
9
LM – Matt Phillips
West Brom winger Matt Phillips.
Playing for Blackpool, Sheffield United and QPR before finding a settled home in the West Midlands with West Brom in 2016, Phillips continues to be a talented winger despite the twilight of his career fast approaching him now at 32 years of age.
Starting all 16 games for Corberan's Baggies this season – even with youngster Tom Fellows pushing Phillips and Diangana all the way for a starting spot – Phillips has registered three goals and two assists to show he's still a reliable creator going forward and why his manager keeps picking him.
10
ST – Josh Maja
Fulham striker Josh Maja.
Once on loan with Fulham in the Premier League from then parent club FC Girondins de Bordeaux, West Brom snapped up Maja on a free transfer deal this summer after the Ligue 1 outfit released their former EFL hot-shot.
Bursting onto the scene in English football with Sunderland as a teenage sensation up top, the "rare" talent – as hailed by former Black Cats striker Jermain Defoe – hasn't really got going yet for the Baggies, but he could be pushing for a starting spot this weekend if fit.
With Thomas-Asante having not been in rich goalscoring form recently – failing to find the net in his last two displays – it could open the door for a surprise Maja start.

Lampard slams Senegal forward
WHAT HAPPENED?
Jackson, 22, was handed several golden opportunities throughout the semi-final at Wembley Stadium to fire Mauricio Pochettino's side ahead against City – however squandered them all. In total the Senegalese striker had three attempts on the afternoon, but failed to find the net as City went on to win 1-0 with a late goal.

WHAT LAMPARD SAID
Speaking as a pundit for on the game, the former Chelsea boss said: "I feel for him a little bit because he made lots of good movement, he’s a young striker, the attributes we saw in him today where he’s racing Kyle Walker, he’s shown pace, he’s shown good movement but there’s a technical detail there, the extra touch, the decision making at the highest level in these highest level of games are the difference.
"The header, you hit anywhere but his body it’s a goal. Little decision making, I feel for him, we’ve all been there, we’ve all missed chances and it’s a critical one for the game. But as a young player that’s the level that you have to be a striker for Chelsea."

THE BIGGER PICTURE
After seeing a header from point blank range saved by City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega – as well as missing several one-on-one chances – Jackson and his side ultimately crashed out of the FA Cup. City won thanks to Bernardo Silva's deflected effort in the 84th minute and they will now face either Manchester United or Coventry City in the final.

WHAT NEXT FOR CHELSEA?
The Blues won't have long to think about their missed chances against City as they will now have to turn their attention to a tough London derby against Premier League title contenders Arsenal on Tuesday evening. Chelsea currently sit in ninth place in the top flight of English football but could jump to seventh if results go their way within the coming week.

It was Tillman's eighth goal contribution in his last nine games, with two goals and six assists during that span. He's been in stunning form while on loan from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, with his future after the 2023-24 campaign still up in the air. The Dutch club want to trigger a purchase clause on the 21-year-old, but it remains to be seen what benefits all parties.

MSK Prasad clarified that he had personally spoken to Nair after dropping him from the Test squad, and that he was “in the scheme of things for Test cricket”
ESPNcricinfo staff01-Oct-2018After controversially dropping Karun Nair from the Test squad, even though he didn’t get a chance to fail or succeed for six straight Tests, India’s chairman of selectors MSK Prasad has given the batsman an advice: “keep on piling runs” in the domestic circuit and for India A.Prasad also clarified that he had personally spoken to Nair after leaving him out of the 15-man squad for the West Indies series at home. Nair’s omission created a stir because he was given no opportunity to prove himself on the preceding England tour and the lone Test against Afghanistan at home.”I personally spoke to Karun soon after the selection of the Test team against the West Indies and also told the ways to make a comeback. The selection committee is very, very clear with regard to the communication process,” Prasad told . “He will have to keep on piling runs in Ranji Trophy and whatever India A series is there. Karun is very much in the scheme of things for Test cricket. Right now, we have advised him to focus on performing in domestic and India A matches.”Prasad further stated that Nair had been spoken to in England too, where the batsman sat on the bench for the entirety of the tour, despite being named in the squad for all five Tests. That included the much talked-about inclusion of a debuting Hanuma Vihari, who edged out Nair to replace the injured Hardik Pandya for the fifth Test at The Oval.”Communication has always been the strong point of this committee,” Prasad said. “It’s really tough to inform any unpleasant news to any player. You need to have valid reasons to explain them about their exclusion though they may not agree with it.”Having said that, we are very clear and candid in our communication process. My colleague Devang Gandhi spoke to Karun Nair at length in England to keep him motivated and wait for his opportunities.”These statements are in direct contradiction to Nair’s. Shortly before the squad for West Indies series was announced, Nair had stated that he had received no communication about why he didn’t get a chance in England even though he was picked in the squad before Vihari.”We [Nair, the selectors and the team management] haven’t had any conversations. Nothing at all,” he had said. “It is difficult, but I haven’t gone forth and asked anything, but yeah, we haven’t had any conversation.”
Since the arrival of Philippe Clement, Rangers have looked far closer to their best than they did during the failed tenure of Michael Beale. The former Queens Park Rangers boss never really got going at Ibrox and was dismissed just under a year after his appointment, making way for Clement. The new manager has got off to an almost flawless start, too, remaining unbeaten in his first four games, which has included thrashings of both Hibernian and Dundee in the Scottish Premiership.
Up next, the Gers square off against Hearts in the Scottish League Cup semi-final, where Clement will be looking to add the cherry on top of his blistering start by reaching his first final at the club in just his fifth game in charge. Meanwhile, off the pitch, Rangers are reportedly eyeing a move to sign a defensive reinforcement in January.
Rangers transfer news
Rangers have been left frustrated by their summer arrivals with the likes of Sam Lammers and Cyriel Dessers enduring difficult starts at Ibrox. The Scottish giants will at least have the opportunity to make up for their transfer failings during the January window, where Clement will have the chance to make his mark on the side. And that could include the arrival of a central defender.
According to Sky Sports, Rangers are monitoring Nathaniel Adjei. The Hammarby centre-back has reportedly been watched by representatives of the Gers, who face competition from Belgian and Italian clubs as well as Old Firm rivals Celtic if they are to pursue the 21-year-old's signature in the winter window. The Swedish season finishes this month, when Adjei will be left with an important decision to make regarding a potential January move.
Glasgow Rangers' home stadium, Ibrox.
Seemingly competing against Celtic on and off the pitch, Rangers may be hoping to make up for their poor showing when it comes to the football side of things by landing a deal for Adjei.
"Top-notch" Adjei could be Clement's first signing
If Clement is to make his desired impact at Ibrox, then welcoming players of Adjei's potential could turn out to be the key. The Scottish Premiership side will no doubt be focused on narrowing the gap on Celtic this season, but they must think of future campaigns on top of that as they look to gain a long-term edge over their Old Firm rivals.
At 21-year-old, Adjei ticks both boxes, and has played a crucial role for Hammarby in Allsvenskan this season, appearing 19 times and even finding the back of the net on one occasion from his central defensive role. His performances have resulted in deserved praise, including from former manager Marti Cifuentes, who said via Ghana Soccernet: “He will develop into a top-notch defender, in my opinion. We know the talent we have on our hands because he has displayed glimpses of being a top-notch football player."
With a number of clubs reportedly interested in landing the centre-back, it remains to be seen whether Rangers can convince Adjei to choose a move to Scotland and themselves over any other chasing parties. When the January transfer window opens, the 21-year-old is one to keep an eye on.
One of the biggest errors that Manchester City have made in recent years was to sell Cole Palmer. Since the Wythenshawe-born superstar left the Etihad Stadium in search of first-team opportunities, he has become one of the most exciting players to watch in Europe.
After making the move to West London outfit Chelsea in the summer of 2023, Palmer has scored 39 goals and grabbed 21 assists in 73 games. For City, opportunities were few and far between for the England international. He made 41 appearances for his boyhood club, scoring six goals and registering two assists.
Chelsea star Cole Palmer
He is not the only player to have excelled after leaving City. Morgan Rogers is another example.
Rogers’ record since leaving Man City
There is a saying that goes, ‘the grass isn’t always greener’, but that is not something Rogers can relate to concerning his decision to leave the Etihad Stadium. After moving to Middlesbrough in the summer of 2023, he moved to Aston Villa in January 2024, for an initial £8m, which could almost double with add-ons.
Just like Palmer has for Chelsea, the attacking midfielder, who was born in Halesowen, has been simply sensational for Unai Emery’s side. As Jamie Carragher described him, Rogers has been “unstoppable” in a Villa shirt.
This season, the 22-year-old has played 35 games, scoring 11 goals and grabbing six assists across all competitions. That includes a Champions League hat trick against Celtic and a goal and assist in a 2-1 win over City in the Premier League.
That one must have stung Pep Guardiola. Erling Haaland aside, Rogers actually has more combined goals and assists in all competitions than any other City player this season. His 17 goal involvements would rank him second, with Phil Foden the next nearest with 15.
Surely City wish they had kept Rogers, given his impressive form in a Villa shirt. Luckily, Guardiola might get a second chance at utilising a player of his profile, in the form of an up-and-coming academy star.
The Rogers-esque academy star
City’s academy have produced some excellent players over the years. Of course, two of those are Palmer and Rogers, who have been superb since leaving the club. Other talents are still playing for the Premier League champions, the likes of Phil Foden and Rico Lewis.
Perhaps the next youngster off this impressive conveyor belt of talent will be 17-year-old midfielder Divine Mukasa. He has impressed so far for the City academy and has previously been compared to Rogers.
Football scout The Next Wave explained that Mukasa has a “unicorn blend” of “size & technical ability”. They compared him to Rogers, explaining that a player of that profile is someone City are “screaming out for” at the moment.
Mukasa’s form for City’s under-18s this season has been extraordinary. The 17-year-old has been on fire across age groups, and has 13 goals and 21 assists in 27 games. In the under-18s Premier League, the midfielder has 12 goals and 13 assists in 14 appearances.
One of his best performances in a City shirt so far came last season, in the UEFA Youth League against Red Star under-19s. As per Sofascore, he created two chances and won four out of six ground duels, showing a good range of skills in midfield.

Football scout Ben Mattinson described Mukasa as someone with “UCL level potential”. He is an exciting prospect for City, who might be someone who breaks through in the next few seasons, or even sooner if the opportunity arises.
Guardiola lost his chance with Rogers, who has gone on to do great things away from, and against the club. He will surely be hoping to integrate Makasa sooner rather than later, given how good he could be for the Citizens.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
After a successful playing career that saw him win a plethora of titles with Barcelona, Inter and Paris Saint-Germain, the two-time Champions League winner started coaching at senior level with a brief spell at Genoa. He then spent a season in charge of Spezia before being appointed Bologna coach, where he has impressed over the last two years. His team are currently fourth in Serie A and in with a chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season.
DID YOU KNOW?
However, he could be lured away from the Italian club before getting the chance to compete in Europe's top club competition as United consider approaching him. A decision on Ten Hag's future is not expected to me made until the end of the season, but it has been reported that the players expect him to be sacked in the summer.
