Big Talking Point: Would you rather have one Harry Kane or both Aubameyang and Lacazette in your team?

There’s no doubting that Harry Kane is up there as one of the best strikers in the world right now but with the Gunners splashing the cash on attacking duo Pierre Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette this season, do they now have a more potent strike force than Spurs’ one-man crusade?

We asked FootballFanCast.com’s writers who they would rather have in their best XI – one Harry Kane or Arsenal pair Lacazette and Aubameyang? Here’s what they said…

Christy Malyan

One Harry Kane is worth a whole strike-force on his own, regardless of what the alternative is, not least because he’s so rarely injured.

He’s made 38 appearances or more (in all competitions) during the last three seasons and will do that again this term as well. Add in the fact he averages nearly a goal per appearance and has improved so many aspects of his game over the last two seasons to become the complete centre-forward, why would you ever need another striker?

In any case, Arsenal’s front-men don’t exactly appeal to me as a strike duo because they’re so similar – both poachers who don’t offer much to all-round play. If Arsenal had kept Olivier Giroud and traded Aubameyang for Lacazette, perhaps they’d have a stronger case for rivalling Kane.

Chris McMullan

Kane’s goals alone speak for themselves. He is simply the best number 9 in the world, but what I like about him is that he could play in any era – he wouldn’t look out of place as Nat Lofthouse bundling the ball over the line and the goalkeeper with it, nor is he unsuited to today’s technical game.

Forget about Lacazette, however, I’d take Aubameyang by himself. It’s probably true that Arsenal can’t play both in the same team, but build an attack around the Gabonais and he’ll bag you goals galore.

He is pacey, he is direct, and he is technical, and having seen him develop from a wide player who took Saint-Etienne to their first trophy in 32 years to one of the world’s deadliest strikers, it’s clear that he can adapt a little better than Kane.

Twitter explodes over £50 million former Chelsea star’s "performance"

Brazil 1-7 Germany. No matter how many times you hear it or read it, yesterday’s World Cup semi final scoreline doesn’t lose any of its shock value.

After such a shambolic defensive showing, Chelsea and Jose Mourinho must be laughing all the way to the bank. At the time, Paris Saint-Germain’s decision to shell out £50 million on David Luiz was ridiculed. And after last night’s performance, these sentiments escalated quickly on Twitter.

The defender may have netted a stunning free kick against Colombia in the quarter final, but the 27 year old was nowhere to be seen as Germany ran rampant over the hosts.

Almost inevitably, some users on social media decided to have a little fun at the former Chelsea man’s expense.

In any case, one positive to emerge from last night’s debacle in Belo Horizonte is that Piers Morgan’s “status” as a football pundit may have taken a hit…

Villas-Boas set to make changes for City game

Andre Villas-Boas has revealed that he could go back to using one single striker for Spurs’ Manchester City clash this Sunday.

Tottenham enjoyed their first Europa League victory of the season last night, with the 4-4-2 system despite the manager never having used it so far this season, switching from the 4-5-1 formation.

However, Villas-Boas insists that the structure of team has not permanently changed ahead of the Manchester City game.

He said: “We’re still a team that creates a lot of attacking opportunities with one striker. We go four steps up in competition [on Sunday], it’s a different scenario.”

Villas-Boas is pleased with his team’s Europa League performance last night after some poor results previously, but has warned that Manchester City’s players will be fresher.

He said: “”It was a good performance, it was important for us to bounce back. To do it in such a good manner was fantastic. At the weekend we play the champions of England [who are] a totally different proposition. They will want to bounce back after a run of bad results. City have two days extra than us, this is the main difference. The reality is they have that extra freshness. But there is enough time to recover. The body takes 48 hours to recover from physical effort and we’ll be able to make that recovery.”

Liverpool fans think Firmino deserves to take Jesus’s starting spot in Brazil team

Football fans always keep a close eye on their players at major tournaments, and one man that Liverpool supporters are keen to see thrive is Roberto Firmino.

The false nine had a stellar season for the Reds, scoring 26 goals and creating 16 assists in all competitions.

[ad_pod ]

Unsurprisingly, Firmino’s form earned him a call-up to the Brazil squad for the World Cup in Russia.

On Sunday, Tite’s side opened their campaign with a Group E match against Switzerland.

Philippe Coutinho opened the scoring inside the first 20 minutes before Steven Zuber found an equaliser five minutes into the second half.

The contest ended in a 1-1 draw, and Firmino only managed to gain 11 minutes on the pitch as he came on as a substitute to replace Gabriel Jesus in the 79th minute.

The Manchester City star was preferred by Tite as part of an attacking trio alongside Neymar and Willian.

Liverpool fans, who were raving about Firmino’s displays all season, think that their man deserves to be in the spotlight.

Three huge Celtic selection calls Brendan Rodgers must make for the visit of FC Zenit

The biggest match of Celtic’s season is coming up this Thursday. Knockout European football returns to Celtic Park for the first time in three years and the test couldn’t be much more difficult by UEFA Europa League standards.

Russian Premier League side FC Zenit make the long trip to Glasgow to play their first competitive match since Russian football entered its winter shutdown, but will be hot favourites for a tie that some Celtic fans are dreading as much as they are looking forward to.

There are big question marks about the Hoops ability to play at this level and to get a result Brendan Rodgers must get his team selection and tactics spot on first and foremost.

With some established stars out of form and defensive blunders numerous in recent months, selecting his starting eleven is a huge dilemma this week.

Who should he play, who should he drop, who can he rely on?

These are the THREE big selection dilemmas facing the Celtic boss…

The out-of-form Moussa Dembele or the inexperienced Odsonne Edouard?

This time last year it would an absurd suggestion to drop Moussa Dembele for any Celtic match, let alone of their most important of the season. The young Frenchman was a sensation last season, scoring over 30 goals and netting in massive matches at home and abroad. He was unstoppable.

This season couldn’t be more different. Still to reach double figures in goals this term and having scored just one goal since November, there are big question marks about his importance to Brendan Rodgers’ first team.

There’s no denying that on his day he can be a ferocious talented, but can he be trusted to play well when it really counts?

His potential replacement Odsonne Edouard hasn’t exactly been on fire this season either but at least he’s shown desire and commitment to make an impression during his loan spell from Paris Saint-Germain.

A half-heart Dembele display could doom Celtic on Thursday and Brendan Rodgers has to figure out what will work best for a cohesive team performance.

Time to drop Jozo Simunovic?

Jozo Simunovic almost single-handedly destroyed Celtic’s Scottish Cup hopes at the weekend, failing to deal with a Partick Thistle defence that, with no disrespect, is miles off the standard of FC Zenit’s attacking line-up.

After a period of extraordinary consistency in the Hoops defensive line, Simunovic’s errors have been mounting up over the last few months, to the point that supporters aren’t exactly keen to see him starting anymore games.

Brendan Rodgers’ problem is that with injuries in the position he isn’t exactly blessed with options and would likely have to either rely on players playing out of position or youngsters like Kristoffer Ajer and Jack Hendry to form an unlikely partnership.

Celtic’s failure to address their defensive problems has been ongoing for years now and it could come home to roost again at Celtic Park this Thursday.

Unleash Charly Musonda or opt for more stability?

One of the big things Brendan Rodgers must get right on Thursday is the make-up of his midfield, which plenty of options and personnel to choose from.

With possibilities of a back three and wing-backs, a packed central area or persisting with two wingers in Scott Sinclair and James Forrest with a man behind the striker, how the Hoops shape up will tell supporters about their intentions in the 90 minutes against the Russians.

Charly Musonda has been given the nod recently through the middle but playing him on Thursday could be seen as something of a risk on a night that the Hoops might need hard graft and heart more than the skills of the Belgian.

Is it time to bring Callum McGregor back into the fold? The Scottish international excelled against Bayern Munich after all.

Or is it time to simply unleash the Chelsea loanee on the big stage?

Do they even need this Liverpool ace?

There shouldn’t have been much surprise when Real Madrid attempted to hijack Bayern Munich’s move for Robert Lewandowski back in December of last year. The Spanish side would have had the Polish international’s four-goal master class against them in the Champions League still fresh in the memory, topped by the fact that Lewandowski has made himself known as one of Europe’s premier forwards under Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund.

Real Madrid’s problem is that Florentino Perez treats the club like a vanity project. Football comes second – unless, of course, we’re talking about the 10th European Cup, which has managed to sidestep Real’s attempts since 2002. The club always need to have the best, even if it means sacrificing the talents of those coming through the academy. In a break from the norm, the start of last season brought much more joy to the supporters, with the club recruiting young Spanish players and promoting from within.

But naturally the major story from last summer was the acquisition of Gareth Bale, a ‘Galacitico’ in status, price and ability. That need to cannon ball into the pool of Europe’s superstar names isn’t set to end. Real Madrid under Perez don’t do things quietly.

And they may land another superstar this summer if Perez has his way. Luis Suarez was inconsolable following Liverpool’s 3-3 draw away to Crystal Palace in the penultimate game of the Premier League season. Were there tears of an impending breakup mixed in with the soon-to-be-confirmed failure to land the league title?

What is certain even at this stage is that we still don’t have a clear understanding of where Real Madrid and Perez will move this summer. They may need defensive additions if there are any departures, as well as another midfielder depending on Sami Khedira’s future and Asier Illarramendi’s development. But that’s small time and isn’t worthy of making the headlines. Perez wants a star forward who will score, delight and sell. Suarez maybe, though it could also be Radamel Falcao or Sergio Aguero.

Under Carlo Ancelotti this season, Real’s sole senior forward Karim Benzema has had one of his better campaigns in the Spanish capital. The other standout year was the season in which the team won the league title with Jose Mourinho. Interchanging with Gonzalo Higuain, who scored 22, Benzema grabbed 21 goals in the league alone. This season, he has been up from his return of last season, 11, by netting 17 times in league play. Zinedine Zidane has been a big help, but it’s also a plus when the manager doesn’t hold a fluctuating feeling of resentment towards you (where have we had that one before?).

But this season has also seen the rise of Jese Rodriguez, who has not only usurped Alvaro Morata from his place as first-choice backup, but who has also grabbed a hatful of hugely important goals throughout the year. Jese’s ACL injury early on against Schalke was a bitter pill to take after such progress.

Both Morata and Benzema’s future is unclear. The former has been heavily linked with a move away, while the latter’s contract expires next summer. If both were to leave at some stage over the next few months, then yes, Real will need to move with purpose to land another centre-forward. However, if they were to stay on, the club would have little need for Suarez. Cristiano Ronaldo’s form, Bale’s improvement and the host of scorers throughout the rest of the squad negate the need for another superstar forward, especially one that would cost upward of €70 million.

You wonder, though, whether Perez may cash in on Morata and Benzema to ensure this team doesn’t lose any of its shine. The league is gone for Real and it is possible they’ll lose to Atletico in the Champions League; after eluding the club for so long, maybe the European Cup isn’t done frustrating Los Blancos. If that were the case, what better way to move on than with some retail therapy?

Perez’s constant neglect for the less glamorous positions on the pitch and cohesion throughout have been to the detriment of the team’s European Cup hopes in the past. The club president will unlikely be asking the questions of whether the team needs Suarez over what they currently have in Benzema, whether Ronaldo wants Suarez in the squad – because it will come up eventually – and whether €70 million can be better invested elsewhere; how about on new contracts for the Spanish youngsters or addressing the problems the team face when Xabi Alonso is absent?

Real may find themselves in a position where they’ll need another centre-forward this summer. But as things stand, that ‘need’ is an unnecessary ‘want.’

Hammers boss praises squad’s teamwork

Sam Allardyce says that he is happy at how his West Ham squad have bonded.

Allardyce says that though the team was overhauled when the Hammers were relegated to the Championship at the end of the 2010/11 season, he feels they have “a healthy squad.”

Hammers fans were worried about the appointment of Allardyce 16 months ago, but the manager seems to have won them over after they got back into the Premier League for this season.

The Hammers have done well so far this season, and the club currently sit seventh in the league table.

Allardyce says the squad had to see changes after relegation due to the effects financially of relegation. However, Allardyce has praised how the squad have shown commitment and passion despite the overhaul after relegation.

He said: “The cost-cutting happened because it needed to. There were also a lot of players that didn’t want to stay. So, they moved on. And then as time goes on, you re-emerge.

“I think that in the end some 40 players left and about 26 or 27 came in during my time. At the moment, even with all that, I think we have got a healthy squad.

“Not quite as many as they were the last time they were in the Premier League. But I think it’s a very committed squad and a very passionate squad. They have gelled and bonded together as a team and are committed to the cause, which is to try and win every game that we play.”

West Ham’s next game is at Wigan on Saturday. They will be hoping to repeat the success of last weekend, where they beat Southampton 4-1.

Andre Silva has not been given a chance at AC Milan and could excel at Wolves

Wolves have long-been rumoured to be interested in AC Milan striker Andre Silva and reports from The Sun last month even described him as their No.1 summer target.

Valued at £19.8million by Transfermarkt, a deal could easily eclipse Wolves’ current transfer record of £15.8million for Ruben Neves, but is the Portuguese striker really worth the money?

Silva joined AC Milan a year ago from Porto for a fee of £34million, but the club are keen to offload him in a desperate attempt to meet UEFA’s financial fair play regulations.

The 22-year-old has failed to live up to expectations, scoring just twice in the league for the Italian club having netted 16 times in the previous campaign for Porto.

He only clocked up 922 minutes for the San Siro outfit last season, making 7 starts and 17 substitute appearances and so it is perhaps unfair to evaluate the striker and his poor return.

Silva would definitely benefit from more game time and at only 22, he still has plenty of time to make good on the promise he showed back in Portugal.

He boasts a solid, if unremarkable 77 per cent passing success rate and 1.5 shots per game, although considering he very rarely played a full 90 minutes for AC Milan, the statistics may not tell the full story.

It is worth noting that Silva fared much better in the Europa League, scoring six goals in ten games as AC Milan reached the Round of 16.

Silva certainly hasn’t become a worse player since he was banging them in for Porto, and a move to a club like Wolves where he would be appreciated and get the game time he needs should see him flourish.

Wolves are clearly looking to spend big to cement their Premier League status, and if Silva rediscovers the form that brought him to the attention of the world, he would be worth much more in a few years’ time.

Player Zone: Everton & Liverpool target Konsa the next exciting talent to emerge from Charlton

During the early portion of this season, Everton and Liverpool target Ezri Konsa performed an unusual role in the Charlton first-team. The highly-rated 20-year-old is primarily a centre-back or at the very least a defender, but Karl Robinson utilised him in a more unique capacity from the bench. On several occasions, Konsa was brought on in central midfield, his predominant task seemingly to help see out victories by winning free kicks in the middle of the park and slowing down the clock.

Konsa proved incredibly adept at it and although it’s a rather unique trait, especially for a defender, it tells us much about why he’s so well-regarded, particularly in the context of English football. Those free kicks were earned by knowing how to use his body; putting it between the ball and an onrushing opponent hoping to stage a counter-attack with a tackle in deep midfield.

That quality fits perfectly into how the demands placed on central defenders are steadily changing in the modern game. More quality on the ball is expected than ever before, and defenders are asked to play their way out of trouble – be that by winning a foul like Konsa has shown he can or by passing through a press – rather than simply hoofing into row Z.

In recent years, we’ve seen just how much clubs are prepared to pay for that kind of defender through signings like John Stones and Virgil van Dijk and currently, eight of the ten most expensive defenders of all time are ball-playing centre-backs. If Everton or Liverpool can pick up one now on the cheap, albeit requiring substantial further development, they’ll save themselves a fortune in the long-run.

That alone makes Konsa something of a gamble worth taking, but there are other appealing qualities to his game as well. The youngster’s athleticism and physicality already stands out and underlines his versatility, although some suitors will be put off by the fact he measures in at just 6 foot – certainly on the short side by the standards of Premier League centre-halves.

Additionally, as we have seen through the impressive progress Dele Alli has made since stepping up to the top flight, experience in the Football League can really make a difference for young players; Konsa has already made 69 senior appearances for the Addicks and is now a recurring member of Robinson’s regular starting XI. Alli made 88 for MK Dons before moving to Spurs and while his exponential rise has been something of an incomparable anomaly, exposure to League One has helped Konsa quickly improve his reading of the game. He’s certainly more experienced than most at the age of 20, and more equipped to make the jump to the top flight.

Likewise, while it provides no guarantee of success, there’s certainly something to be said for Charlton academy products. The Roland Duchatelet regime won’t be remembered fondly by Addicks fans but it has allowed academy products to shine and under the much-maligned Belgian’s tutelage, Diego Poyet, Morgan Fox, Kasey Palmer, Tareiq Holmes-Dennis, Callum Harriott, Jordan Cousins, Joe Gomez and Ademola Lookman have all made the step up to either Championship or Premier League clubs. It wasn’t too long ago Arsenal and Liverpool signed Carl Jenkinson and Jonjo Shelvey from the Addicks as well.

Of course, some of those players have enjoyed far more successful careers than others, and Everton and Liverpool will be hoping Konsa – who Transfermarkt value at £450k – is something closer to Gomez and Lookman than Poyet, Fox or Cousins. But the academy setup at The Valley has shown its consistency in developing young footballers and currently, Konsa is the club’s standout prospect.

In turn though, perhaps that should shape how Liverpool and Everton approach this potential swoop. While they’re both keen to sign Konsa before somebody else does, his development is best-served in south east London for now; he’s surrounded by coaches who have known him since joining the club as a twelve-year-old, he’s getting games for a playoff-chasing side in a competitive third tier and he’s playing under a manager in Robinson who wants exciting and expansive football – Konsa will be allowed to play and express himself, rather than simply being asked to defend the near post with headers and clearances.

With that in mind, a loan back to Charlton for the remainder of the season seems the most logical option.

A signing to salvage Manchester United’s season?

With the return of Robin van Persie supplementing the arrival of Juan Mata, suddenly Manchester United look much stronger than they did over the past month.

It’s to be expected, of course. Both van Persie and Mata are a class above the players who have been available to David Moyes in recent weeks. The team have lacked adventure, confidence and bite in the final third. And with Wayne Rooney also making his way back into the team amid talks of a contract extension with the club, United should be considered favourites to finish in the top four this season.

What is quite clear is that Mata isn’t the final piece of business, nor is he enough to completely change the mood at the club long term. The Spaniard is, however, of sufficient class to turn around the club’s season now. He’s the type of player that adds another dimension to a team’s play. He raises the confidence of others around him and allows them to perform better. But there’s also very much a palpable sense of achievement at having secured a player of such quality, even if he is to be the only signing for United at this time.

And it would be wrong to say that United don’t have the squad to finish fourth. Their squad is deeper and more experienced than Liverpool, Tottenham and Everton, who are also vying for a place in the top four.

United need to overhaul their defence in the summer, with three key names coming to the end of their contract and questions raised about the futures of one or two more going into next season. But like the case with the centre of midfield, that is an issue that can be addressed properly in the summer window when opportunities will be greater to land players deemed first or second choice targets.

Nemanja Vidic and Michael Carrick can help to form a strong spine at that end of the pitch – and it’s also worth remembering Moyes’ strength in organising his teams defensively. With Darren Fletcher also available, United do have a means to solidify their defence with what they currently have and allow Mata, van Persie and even Adnan Januzaj to form a counterattacking system, which certainly suits the current team far more than a possession-based game.

There is no masking the shortcomings of this United team. What Mata’s signing does is offer the club a boost that should carry them over the line into Champions League qualification for next season. It was always unreasonable to expect the club to go on a £200 million spending frenzy in the final week of this window. That business will be reserved for a time further down the line.

Despite having a strong squad, United have lacked depth of a certain quality. Provided van Persie and Rooney’s injury troubles are behind them for this season, the addition of Mata does give the team an edge and another strong card where others are lacking. It’s about converting chances and killing off games, which United have been unable to do in the absence of their world-class calibre players.

It’s far from the complete team, but it’s a team more than good enough to finish in the top four. As well as providing a notable boost to the players, Mata’s arrival should allow Moyes to carry out his job with authority. A Champions League spot is far from out of reach.
