Manchester City’s priority should be to get him out, not hike up the price

Manchester City should consider themselves fortunate that AC Milan are one of the few teams – probably the only team, in fairness – to show an interest in Mario Balotelli. It’s not that the player isn’t good enough to play at big club in Europe, or even produce moments of brilliance in City’s quest to retain their Premier League title. But it is an awful lot of baggage to retain unnecessarily.

So why, then, have City reportedly gone out of their way to hike up the price of a player that no one really wants? Milan are offering him an escape route out of England, but instead of thanking their stars that a saviour has materialised out of the mist, the league champions are looking to milk this one for all it’s worth.

If Manchester City were willing to pay £20-plus million for Balotelli when they purchased him from Inter Milan then fine, but it doesn’t mean other clubs should have to pay that much for a player who clearly isn’t worth it.

[post_link url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/manchester-city/striker-going-nowhere-says-mancini,https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/manchester-united-still-premier-leagues-richest-club,https://www.footballfancast.com/premiership/manchester-duo-to-battle-for-goalkeeper” target=”_blank” type=”tower”]

Balotelli is a young, supposedly elite striker who performed exceptionally well for Italy at Euro 2012. Well, what else? How else can City or the player himself enhance his reputation and advertise him as a striker who warrants another club offering City back their investment as well as interest?

Talent will take you a long way, but it won’t force the giants of European football into a mad scramble for your services if that’s all you can muster. For a player who apparently is worth a fee pushing £30million, where is the guarantee or even hint of 20 goals a season? There’s a rotation policy in Roberto Mancini’s side, but that hasn’t stopped the other three strikers performing when they’re called upon.

Does Mancini even want the player anymore? Up until recently, it seemed as though the manager was determined to create a mini project for himself, one which would see him brush the dust away and reveal Balotelli as the definition of a diamond in the rough. But the striker isn’t the first and he won’t be the last. His mentality seems to suggest that he doesn’t appreciate how precarious his career currently is. He has the big wages and a spot in the Italian national squad, but how long will clubs put up with his behaviour and disrespect? Teams like PSG and others on the continent may have the funds to pick him up, but overwhelming financial backing doesn’t equate to a lack of values and sense.

Financial Fair Play may be starting to take effect, but do clubs like City really fear UEFA and what they may do if finances remain out of place? It’s no problem for the Manchester club to part with Balotelli for a loss, while links to other strikers in Europe gives evidence that City are looking to and are financially capable of replacing or strengthening their forward line.

It depends entirely how you want to view Mario Balotelli. He was once an enigmatic figure who created plenty of headlines, and with it he managed to put together a decent following. For whatever reason, people found entertainment or interest in the actions of a footballer, but not for what he’s actually paid to do.

His actions with fireworks, darts and most recently that hair spells it out. He’s a kid enjoying the high life, but one who has no desire to put his career on course. Manchester City’s owners have always come across as people who want to maintain the high levels of respect for senior figures at the club, and that’s specific to Roberto Mancini. For all the money spent and the trophies that have come along in the past two seasons, Manchester City are still not at the big time, and they know it. They might be the champions of England, but the club continue to grow their brand as well as their image on the pitch.

But with everything the club are trying to achieve, it’s players like Balotelli who throw spanners in the works. He received two red cards last season in the league, both of which came in high-profile games against Arsenal and Tottenham. This season, he has one goal in the league. For all the money he’s currently being paid, it’s just not good enough.

Mancini’s squad may be short of numbers, but that should be put to the side for now. They’re only competing in two competitions for the remainder of the season, and any lack of investment surely won’t force blame to fall at the manager’s door.

AC Milan have come along and presented a get-out clause. The loss for a club like City shouldn’t matter. Their priority should be to move Balotelli on and out of the club.

Wright suggests Mourinho could put players off joining Manchester United

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has claimed that if he still playing professionally, he would not want to play under Jose Mourinho right now.

The Manchester United manager has come under fire for his recent outbursts in the media, and once again he has publicly criticised left-back Luke Shaw.

Over the last two seasons, the Portuguese coach has questioned the 22-year-old’s commitment and highlighted fitness problems.

Mourinho admitted that he was unhappy with Shaw’s performance after hauling him off at half-time of the team’s FA Cup quarter-final win over Brighton at the weekend.

Throughout the season, questions have also been raised over the manager’s relationship with Paul Pogba after the midfielder was dropped for a handful of games.

Due to the current predicament surrounding the club, Ian Wright has suggested that players would be more inclined to join soon-to-be Premier League champions Manchester City rather than United.

The retired striker told BBC Radio 5 Live:

“If you get a real top player, the real top-end, and you had Manchester City or Manchester United right now, I wouldn’t want to play for Mourinho right now. The thing is you’d go there thinking that you want to play for Manchester United, this is what it’s about.”

Three things we learnt from Man United’s clash with Southampton

Juan Mata doesn’t bring much to this Man United team

The Spanish international’s place in the starting XI is constantly up for debate and when Louis van Gaal has a fully fit squad, you can’t see the former Chelsea midfielder getting too much game time.

Robin van Persie has still got it

With Radamel Falcao, Angel di Maria and Wayne Rooney all vying for those attacking spots, the former Arsenal striker’s ability to still cut it at the top has been questioned quite considerably; he responded perfectly to those doubters tonight.

Result > Performance

Much like the Arsenal victory, Man United were second best for the majority of the game against Southampton but they won’t mind! In fact, grinding out results is what champions do, right…?!

QPR enter talks for Liverpool ace

QPR are negotiating a deal for Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole, according to reports from Sky Sports.

The 31-year-old has been a bit part player at Anfield under Brendan Rodgers this term, leading to speculation that he may be available to leave during the January transfer window.

Super Hoops manager Harry Redknapp believes that he can take advantage of this to bring the playmaker to Loftus Road when the transfer window opens later this week.

Should an acceptable bid be made it’s likely that Liverpool will accept, as they are keen to remove Cole’s £90,000-per-week wages from their expenditure.

It remains unclear as to whether the ex-Chelsea man will want to stay and fight for his place at the club, but with Daniel Sturridge and Tom Ince rumoured to be close to moving to Merseyside, it would appear that competition for attacking roles may increase.

Redknapp is keen to add to his squad at QPR, in a bid to haul them clear of the foot of the Premier League table.

Having coached Cole earlier in his career, ‘Arry knows of the attacking midfielders abilities and will be confident that he can add some creative quality to his side.

Cole was absent from Liverpool’s squad as the teams met on Sunday, furthering speculation that he is set to leave the club.

Tottenham fans want Wanyama to keep spot in team

It has been a frustrating season for Victor Wanyama, with the midfielder struggling to earn a starting role in the Tottenham Hotspur XI since returning from injury in early 2018.

Wanyama was only given minutes here and there throughout January and February as Eric Dier was preferred alongside in-form Mousa Dembele in the middle of the park.

The 26-year-old has now played the full 90 minutes in two of Tottenham’s last three Premier League matches, however, including in Sunday’s 4-1 win at Bournemouth.

Wanyama was excellent alongside Dembele at the heart of the midfield, and the Spurs supporters, who were not pleased with one of their players at the weekend, are hopeful that the Kenyan will now keep his position in the team.

Dier will certainly have something to say about that, but one Tottenham fan pointed out that he would much rather see Wanyama in the team than the England international.

Does he still have a plan for Arsenal?

Arsenal as a club never appear to have a specific plan when heading in to a match, and that can only be down to the failings of one man, the manager – Arsène Wenger.

The Premier League club quite regularly score in the last few minutes of matches to rescue a point or to salvage a victory against weaker opposition, none more dramatic than the Anderlecht victory in their last Champions League outing. This happens too regularly to Arsenal for it to be coincidental and scoring late goals isn’t a tactic.

Wenger may well have been considered a tactical genius once upon a time but now it feels as though he’s a world behind the likes of Jose Mourinho (although most managers are) in terms of tactical ability. You’d expect Wenger in his heyday to combat the top sides with a tactical plan, however now he is seemingly fresh out of tactics.

After Arsenal finally ended their trophy drought last season by winning the FA Cup, the revival of Wenger’s career seemed plausible. But once again Arsenal don’t seem particularly impressive in the Champions League nor the Premier League, albeit we’re in the early stages of both competitions. They’ve by no means been bad in the Champions League but they scraped through the Anderlecht match with two goals in the final few minutes, and as aforementioned, Wenger wouldn’t have instructed his side to wait until the final moments to strike. It’s great that Arsenal have the belief to go until the very last minute when struggling but there is always a bit of good fortune for most last gasp goals.

Of course, sometimes Arsenal can be very impressive but is there a manager in the Premier League who couldn’t win some games comprehensively with Arsenal’s above average squad?

Arsène’s tactical nous appears to have disappeared without cause or reason. He never gives off the impression that he’s planned well tactically for his upcoming opponents, but only that he is heading out onto the pitch expecting/hoping to win – not dissimilar to a Sunday League manager. Just because he doesn’t reveal his tactics doesn’t necessarily mean he’s not planning ahead – but it would certainly give the Gunners fans more confidence in him if he at least portrayed an image that he knows what he’s doing.

Beating the lesser sides was once easier in the Premier League but we can certainly not take anything away from the immense success that Arsène has had at Arsenal during his 18 year reign. However, the glory days have seemingly gone and Wenger shows no signs of improving – perhaps it would be fitting to give him his 20th year and then call it day – as these appear to be numbered at Arsenal and they have been for many years.

Clarke claims Netting behind goals unnecessary despite Manchester mayhem

Malcolm Clarke, chairman of the Football Supporters’ Federation (FSF), has dismissed suggestions that nets should be erected behind goals to protect players from attacks by supporters.

His comments come after Rio Ferdinand was left with a cut above the eye from a coin thrown by a Manchester City fan towards the end of United’s dramatic victory at the Etihad.

But Clarke feels netting is unnecessary, pointing to the vast reduction in arrests at grounds over the last year.

He told The Guardian: “Netting is not something we feel is necessary to have. No one condones the throwing of missiles, but arrests last season were 24% down on previous seasons and not many social phenomenon alter that much.

“It is undoubtedly improving and I think before we start making knee-jerk reactions to particular incidents we ought to bear that in mind.”

Sunday’s scenes had prompted Gordon Taylor, chief executive of the Professional Footballers’ Association, to suggest separating fans from players with netting.

Taylor told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I think you’ve got to give consideration to possibly, as has been suggested, some netting in vulnerable areas, be it behind the goals and round the corner flags.”

Thirteen arrests were made at the Etihad Stadium, nine of whom have been charged for a variety of offences, including racially aggravated public order offences and football banning orders such as drunk and disorderly behaviour and pitch encroachment. All nine are due before Manchester City magistrates court on 4th January.

Arsenal fans all want Mertesacker to start instead of Mustafi against Brighton

Arsenal will look to recover from successive 3-0 defeats against Manchester City in the League Cup final and the Premier League when they face Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium on Sunday, and Gunners fans all want Per Mertesacker to start ahead of Shkodran Mustafi at the back.

The north London outfit’s defeat against City at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday, combined with wins for Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool on Saturday, mean that they now lie 13 points from the Champions League qualification spots with just 10 matches remaining.

Mustafi has started 19 of those 28 matches after missing seven through injury earlier in the campaign, but after two disappointing performances against Pep Guardiola’s men the Emirates Stadium faithful are keen to see him replaced by Mertesacker, even though he has only played 82 minutes of top flight football since October.

Arsenal supporters were quick to have their say on the duo via social media, and while one said “he should start ahead of Mustafi imo”, another said “Kos and Per should start the next match”.

Wayne Rooney’s top FIVE stupidest moments

Will Wayne Rooney ever learn? The Manchester United captain (that’s right, captain) was once again on the end of a red card over the weekend for a petulant kick at West Ham’s Stewart Downing, which almost proved to be an act that threw away three points.

Through his career, the England man has always been a ‘hothead’, with moments of anger, frustration and just pure stupidity having gained him headlines for the wrong reasons. With the memory of another dismissal fresh in our minds, we’ve taken a trip down through the years to recall some more incidents of Rooney madness.

Portugal stamp – 2006

//www.youtube.com/embed/SFvZ389nsCE

Frustration got the better of Rooney during the 2006 World Cup Quarter-Finals. The then young striker was up top all alone with Portugal’s Ricardo Carvalho giving him a few lessons in the dark arts of defending. Wayne certainly bit in the end, as he stamped back on the centre-half’s privates before seeing the red card. The Three Lions went on to lose the penalty shootout.

West Ham camera rant – 2011

//www.youtube.com/embed/uIDT1eaMkjM

As a role model, Rooney has a certain sense of responsibility, yet that went out of the window in 2011 when he scored against West Ham. His hat-trick turned the game around for United, and with the media criticism he’s been getting at the time Rooney let fly with a tirade of abuse which was caught on camera…

England rant – 2010 – 2011

//www.youtube.com/embed/QJSUWOTTHaI

A 0-0 draw with Algeria at the World Cup. England fans were rightly angered and disappointed. But Rooney failed to see the justification for the boos coming down from the stands as he turned to the camera and let the watching world know his thoughts. He kept it clean, but his relationship with the supporters was damaged.

Villarreal Sarcastic applause – 2005

Perhaps his ultimate act of petulance came in 2005 as he was dismissed against Villarreal for sarcastically applauding the referee. Rooney was annoyed with a yellow card brandished to him by Kim Milton Nielsen and promptly clapped in the official’s face, which was met with a second caution.

Montenegro kick – 2011

//www.youtube.com/embed/G1ovfmebnpM

Stupid, reckless and costly to England. Rooney was forced to sit out the start of EURO 2012 after receiving a red card in a qualifier with Montenegro. The striker’s act was careless given the fact England were leading and created a major talking point heading into the major tournament.

Football Advent Calendar Day 2 – WIN an England shirt

Day 2 of the FootballFanCast.com Advent Calendar gives you the chance to win an England shirt, as worn by Roy Hodgson’s men in Euro 2012.

Euro 2012 might not have been a great success for the Three Lions, seeing as England were knocked out by Italy on penalties in the Quarter Finals, but Roy Hodgson’s men have a chance to redeem themselves in qualifying for World Cup 2014 in Brazil.

The shirt is manufactured by Umbro, as has been the case for a number of years and features a red star above the Three Lions crest, which represents Bobby Moore and Co’s 1966 World Cup success at Wembley.

Congratulations to Samantha Fernley, Kyle Cann and Vicki Elizabeth Cullen who won a copy of the Secret Footballer yesterday.

Fancy winning an England shirt?
