Crystal Palace in talks for half-price Bayern Munich star with 'concrete offer' made

Crystal Palace are now in ‘direct talks’ about signing a Bayern Munich star ahead of the looming January transfer window, according to a new report.

Crystal Palace prepare for Man United after excellent start to the season

Palace welcome Man United to Selhurst Park on Sunday afternoon with Oliver Glasner’s side sitting just outside the top four, while the Red Devils languish nearer mid-table following Monday’s shocking home defeat to ten-man Everton.

Glasner’s impressive Palace project continues gathering momentum despite recent bumps.

Positioned just three points behind second-placed Chelsea, the South London club have managed 20 points from their opening 12 Premier League games — their strongest start to a top flight campaign since 1991-92 — all while conceding just nine goals.

Amid the uncertainty surrounding Glasner’s long-term future, not to mention Marc Guehi’s, and the fact they lost star playmaker Eberechi Eze in the summer, Palace’s start comes as a shock to everyone.

They’ve also coped extremely well with the added Conference League fixtures, and responded in excellent fashion after being denied what many perceived as their rightful place in the Europa League.

Following the departures of Eze and another quality forward, Michael Olise, in the last two years — Palace have relied on new stars like in-form striker Jean Philippe-Mateta to deliver the goods instead.

Palace’s unprecedented 19-game unbeaten run in all competitions, which was eventually ended by Everton in October, is also testament to the fine job Glasner has done with limited resources.

However, if Palace are to convince the Austrian to remain at Selhust Park, chairman Steve Parish will need to showcase ambition.

According to reports, Palace could be active in the January transfer window, and it is believed that Bayern right-back Sacha Boey is a player of real interest.

Crystal Palace hold talks over signing Bayern Munich's Sacha Boey

The former Galatasaray star, who was once a rumoured target for Arsenal, hasn’t found life easy since swapping Turkey for Bavaria in 2024.

Galatasaray defender Sacha Boey.

Boey has been in and out of Vincent Kompany’s starting elevens, and a January transfer for the 25-year-old is now growing increasingly possible.

That is according to Bayern Insider, who also report that Glasner is in ‘direct talks’ with sporting director Christoph Freund about a potential move for Boey.

Palace are also said to have made a ‘concrete offer’ for the Frenchman, who’s potentially looking to battle his way into Didier Deschamps plans for the 2026 World Cup next year amid stiff competition.

Even though the Bundesliga champions signed him for around £26 million, Bayern are now prepared to sell for half the price at around £13 million — opening the door for Palace to strike a bargain move.

Links to Boey will intensify reports that in-form Eagles right-back Daniel Munoz could leave in the near future, with Chelsea among those considering a swoop for the Colombian who’s arguably been one of Glasner’s top players this season.

'He works his socks off' – Daniel Farke backs USMNT's Brenden Aaronson amid growing frustration from some Leeds fans

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has again defended divisive attacker Brenden Aaronson, who has been the subject of more abuse from his own fans, albeit while admitting that the USMNT star is an "annoying" player. It comes as Leeds are struggling to tread water on their return to the Premier League, sitting just inside the relegation zone on goal difference, with the pressure also mounting on Farke himself.

  • Aaronson criticism 'more than unfair'

With the second most goal-shy attack in the Premier League through 12 games, Leeds aren't scoring enough to get the points they need to be higher up the table. Aaronson has featured in all of those fixtures, starting nine of them, supposedly as a chief source of creativity from the right.

The American has contributed one goal and one assist and is frustrating fans, many of whom have openly let him know about it. Even Farke admitted he understood it because of inconsistencies in performances, but is also keen to point out that the criticism is "more than unfair".

He said after Leeds' 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa on Sunday: "I have to say Brenden is a player who polarizes and can be annoying even for me. Sometimes he’s not clear enough and can be a bit hectic. But I have to say what we're doing in criticizing this young man – then we don't have to do all these mental health awareness days.

"He represents so many skills we want to stand for as Leeds United. He works his socks off, gives everything, is relentless and leaves his heart on the pitch. It's more than unfair at the moment. In the last three performances he was always there covering 13 kilometers per game. Why we're looking so solid on our right side – with all respect to Jayden [Bogle] – Brenden is so crucial to protect him."

Farke concerned about impact of negative comments

Farke went on to address concerns about the kind of impact that persistent criticism and abuse could ultimately have on Aaronson.

"I'm just worried how we are as a society, with social media stuff, how we are as human beings," he said. "You just see the negative comments. If you see 5,000 negative comments about yourself as a 25-year-old guy, you think the whole world is on your shoulders.

"I could make my life easy and also slam him and then everyone would say, 'Yes, Daniel, tell him, great, we don’t like him anyway.’ But I protect human beings. This is what I do. I work with human beings, I don't work with robots. I also see what this lad is doing. And he is always a fantastic team-mate. He works his socks off.

"We feel better if we can put our anger just on other human beings. I don't like it. And when everyone is on his back, for such a young lad, is it really like how we want to treat human beings in our society? At least I don't want to treat them [like that].

"So we can criticize them, and we can think, 'Okay, you should not play football games' – whatever. But also, come on, watch, judge his performances, be at least a little bit fair. And if you don't want to do this in terms of relationship, come on, be a bit respectful with a young lad of 25-years-old. And then, otherwise, we don't have to have all this mental health awareness days, and we can put it into the bin."

  • Farke defended Aaronson in September

Farke also staunchly defended Aaronson back in September. "It's important to not put too much weight on his shoulders. Sometimes the feeling with Brenden is that we are a bit over-critical in public,” the Leeds manager said at the time. "We know Brenden has challenges in his offensive game in terms of decision-making, being a bit clearer and more straightforward. This is something we speak a lot about. It's not like I press a button and do my magic and he's a completely different player. In training we bring him more into positions where he has to take decisions. It's not like he is not willing to score or not highly motivated. Sometimes because he is so on it he is perhaps losing a bit of his calmness. But it's not helpful if everyone is always criticizing him."

    Leeds needs points fast

It's more promising for Aaronson that his two Premier League goal contributions so far this season have both come within the last four games. Sadly for an already struggling Leeds, things aren't about to get any easier, with Manchester City away on Saturday, followed by visits of Chelsea and Liverpool.

To avoid another relegation back to the Championship, they need to start picking up points fast.

A batting-friendly pitch likely for second India-West Indies Test

The pitch for the second and final India-West Indies Test, which starts on October 10 in Delhi, will have patches of grass interspersed with bald areas, unlike the Ahmedabad pitch for the first Test that had an even grass covering. The Delhi pitch will have a black-soil base and is likely to favour batters, with spin playing a role as the surface dries up gradually.West Indies lost the first Test inside three days after electing to bat on one of the greenest pitches in India since the World Test Championship was launched in 2019. With four millimetres of live grass covering spread over a red-soil pitch coupled with good bounce, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj gleefully went about their job on the first morning as West Indies were all out in 44.1 overs. The visitors lasted just 45.1 overs in their second innings, suffering a bruising defeat by an innings and 140 runs. The pitch at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, though, is understood to be more batting-friendly, coupled with a quick outfield and slightly shorter boundaries. The last Test played here was the second of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2023. In that game, Australia, having elected to bat on a slow turner, lost by six wickets, inside three days.

Yankees Considering Position Change for Jazz Chisholm When He Returns From IL

The New York Yankees are hoping to see Jazz Chisholm Jr. back in the lineup before too long. Chisholm has missed the last 25 games while dealing with an oblique injury, but is set to embark on a rehab assignment in the coming days.

After Chisholm played the first 30 games of the season at second base, the Yankees are considering shaking things up when the 27-year-old makes his way back to the field. According to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, Chisholm could be moving to third base when he's activated from IL.

The six-year veteran has some, but not much, experience over at the hot corner. After being acquired by New York last season, he played 45 games at third base, but those are his only appearances at the position in his career.

With Chisholm unavailable, the Yankees have used Oswald Peraza at third base while D.J. LeMahieu slots in at second.

Aaron Boone told reporters that Chisholm is set to play third base for the organization's Double A affiliate, the Somerset Patriots, in a game on Thursday ahead of his return to the Yankees.

In 30 games before in his injury, Chisholm had a .714 OPS with seven home runs, 17 RBIs, six stolen bases and 39 strikeouts.

Juan Soto’s Underwhelming Start Is Both a Physical and Mental Issue

What in the world is going on with Juan Soto? The New York Mets outfielder is getting beat by fastballs, he is rightfully getting crushed for not hustling on at least two instances, he has lost bat speed and is in the midst of his first-ever 10-game span with no extra base hits and 12 strikeouts.

It’s a tribute to his ability to draw walks that Soto still posted a .815 OPS and 134 OPS+ in his first 48 games with the Mets. But he is not being paid $756 million over 15 years to scratch out walks. More telling of his state of mind than any of his stats is his body language. Frankly, it is awful, and it is manifesting itself in a lack of explosiveness at the plate.

Theories abound about this lesser version of Soto. When it comes to getting inside his head, leave it to his agent, Scott Boras, who speaks with him regularly, to provide a diagnosis.

“The moniker,” Boras says. Soto is the highest paid player in baseball ever. And though he changed teams twice before, to the Padres and the Yankees, both occasions were via trade. This time, with this title of Highest Paid, is way different. There is more pressure, more expectations, more scrutiny.

“It’s taking time to learn how to wear the crown,” Boras says. “I cautioned Juan about it. This 90-day period of assimilation, I’ve seen it time and time again. There’s probably another 30 days to go through. It’s going to get better and better. It’s about learning how to wear the crown.

“The hardest part that the public doesn’t anticipate is that this is the kind of situation that comes around maybe once every 10 or 15 years or so: a generational talent on a record contract. Juan’s approach with the crown is an adjustment. I told him, ‘You’re going to get your pitches to hit. Swing less. You’re not there yet.’”

Soto’s return to Yankee Stadium was particularly rough for him. Jogging out of the box on a groundball to second base in a close game was the worst of it, unless you count the regrettable language directed at him from the stands. Boras says it was the first time Soto had a chance to speak with his former teammates and that the weekend was “a catharsis” for him. The agent downplayed the idea that Soto regrets his decision to sign with the Mets.

“With free agency, any choice you make comes with regrets,” Boras says. “It’s human nature. It’s the salad that comes with the steak. It’s human nature.”

Soto’s free agency was largely viewed as a Yankees vs. Mets battle, but Boras says Toronto Blue Jays ownership made “a great proposal” that impressed Soto and that “I could have gotten more money from the Boston Red Sox. They were that into it. Juan had many choices.”

Soto chose the Mets because owner Steve Cohen mounted a personal, family-friendly campaign and because Cohen’s personal wealth and ambition provided the most assurance that Soto will always play for a title contender.

The money quote from my story with Soto in spring training came from asking him why he chose the Mets: “How many times we can be good on this team.  I know the Yankees are going to be good for the next five, six years.  We don't know after that.”

The Yankees, Soto said then, started out in his free agency as his first choice. But where Cohen stepped up at every turn, starting from an initial meeting at his house when other teams met Boras’s request to meet at a hotel, Soto said the Yankees were more passive in their pursuit.

“But I don't know … I just feel like … It's just weird,” Soto said. “It's kind of like … How can I explain it?” Then, after a long pause, he continued, “I feel like the Yankees did a pretty good job.  But they, they keep, they couldn't get it done right. Like, I wanted to get it done, but they're still bouncing around.  instead of just get it done right away. Yeah, just get it done. Let's get a good, uh, good feeling. You know what I want. You know what I’m trying to get. They're still bouncing around. So, I feel like that was one of the things that kind of like sent me down.”

Until Soto conquers this “wearing of the crown” break-in period, he is not the same hitter. Here are most obvious ways Soto has regressed, with all stats updated entering Wednesday’s games:

1. He is not into his lower half as much as a hitter.

Here is a look at Soto in 2024 on the left and 2025 on the right as the pitcher is at leg lift and at ball release. You clearly see he is more upright and less athletic this year. He does not coil and spring through the baseball as he did last year.

MLB

“You’re right,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza says. “You’re on to something. I like him much better right now with two strikes, because then he spreads out and gets into his legs more.”

When I mention to Boras that Soto’s discomfort is showing with physical manifestations such as his more upright posture in the box, the agent says, “You have to know how to balance the crown to wear it. What is hitting? Hitting is balance.”

2. Soto has not been doing the full-on Soto Shuffle.

We have seen abbreviated versions of it, but not the “In-your-face-I-own-you” body language sent to the pitcher when he takes a pitch. The swagger is not there.

3. Soto can’t drive low pitches.

This is probably a function of his more upright posture. Soto always has been a much better high-ball hitter than low-ball hitter, but he is doing almost no damage on pitches at the bottom of the strike zone and lower:

4. Soto has trouble with velocity.

Now there is a sentence you thought you would never read. Last year Soto slugged .718 against pitches 95 mph and faster. Only Rafael Devers (.722) was better. This year he ranks 83rd against 95+, with a slug versus elite velocity that is down almost 300 points.

5. Soto has lost bat speed.

Soto is having trouble with velocity because his bat is not as quick. His bat speed on those 95+ pitches has dropped significantly, from 75.6 mph to 72.2 mph. Overall, only two batters have lost more bat speed this year than Soto (Lamonte Wade Jr. of the Giants and Josh Naylor of the Diamondbacks).

The Mets have seen this movie before, only not at the same investment level. On this date in 2021, his first year with the Mets, Francisco Lindor was hitting .185. Soto is a generational player. He made his major league debut seven years ago Tuesday. His career on-base percentage on his seven-year anniversary was .419. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, only four players have ever been better at getting on base through their seventh anniversary: Frank Thomas, Wade Boggs, Todd Helton and Albert Pujols.

But Soto is not the highest paid player in baseball just because he draws walks. The Mets need him to do damage, especially with their offense hitting a historic funk. The Mets entered Wednesday having lost five of six without a home run and only eight runs and 40 total bases. It was their worst offensive week since Casey Stengel’s 109-loss outfit of 1964.

The good news for Soto is that he is healthy, and he has not lost his preternatural understanding of the strike zone. In due time, as with Lindor, Soto will return to mashing. But if Boras is right about what Soto is going through, the Mets may need to endure another month of this low-wattage, bad-body language version of Soto. The crown is still too heavy.

Better than Anderson: Man Utd move 'close' to signing big-money midfielder

Despite the £200m spending spree in the summer transfer window, Manchester United have failed to address the need for a new central midfielder in Ruben Amorim’s side.

His 3-4-2-1 system requires two dominant ball-playing options, with Bruno Fernandes currently occupying one of the two positions at the heart of the side.

The Portuguese international is primarily a number ten, but the arrivals of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have seen him drop into a slightly deeper number eight role.

Casemiro has often been the man to partner him in the middle of the park, but with his contract expiring at the end of 2025/26, it’s evident that a long-term solution is needed.

As a result, the Red Devils have since been drawing up a shortlist of potential options, with the January transfer window now rapidly appearing on the horizon.

Man Utd’s hunt for a new central midfielder in January

In an attempt to improve the options in the midfield department, the United board have identified Stuttgart star Angelo Stiller as a potential addition this January.

The German has developed into one of Europe’s leading performers, but he could be available for a fee in the region of £53m – a potential bargain given his recent rise in the Bundesliga.

However, he’s also seemingly on the radar of European giants Bayern Munich, which could lead to a huge battle for the 24-year-old’s signature in the months ahead.

He’s not alone in being a potential target for Amorim’s men, with Joao Gomes another talent that’s currently being considered for the central midfield role.

According to one Brazilian outlet, the Red Devils are advancing in talks for the 24-year-old, with a £44m transfer fee being mooted for his services this winter.

The report notes that a deal is ‘widely expected’ to be completed and that the player is ‘close’ to transfer clubs over the winter.

It also states that the Wolves star would be open to a switch to Old Trafford, but it remains to be seen if his current employers would sanction a move during the mid-point of the campaign.

Why United’s latest target would be a better signing than Anderson

Over the last couple of weeks, Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson has been another player who has been on their radar to bolster the central midfield department.

The Englishman has been one of the star men in the Premier League this campaign, leading to a first string of international appearances under Thomas Tuchel.

He’s featured in every single minute of the Reds’ league campaign to date, even playing a key role in the recent 3-0 triumph over Liverpool at Anfield this weekend.

His form has led to huge rumours over a potential switch to Old Trafford, but his current side are demanding a fee in the region of £100m to part ways with him in the near future.

Such a deal would be a club record, breaking the £89m fee paid for Paul Pogba way back in the summer of 2016 – potentially making a transfer somewhat unlikely this winter.

As a result, cheaper alternatives will likely have to be considered by Amorim and the board, which could result in a transfer for Gomes in the coming months.

When comparing the Brazilian’s stats to those of Anderson from the opening months of the season, the Wolves star has managed to outperform him in numerous areas – that’s despite his side sitting rock bottom.

Gomes, who’s been described as “one of the best pressers in the league” by one analyst, has completed more of his attempted passes and notched more passes into the opposition box per 90 this season.

Such numbers in possession showcase that the Brazilian thrives at finding a teammate, which could benefit some of the £200m additions within the final third at Old Trafford.

He’s also won more tackles per 90 whilst making more clearances and interceptions per 90 – numbers which make him the perfect ball-winning option for the Red Devils.

Gomes’ all-round dominance is further reflected in his higher take-on success and aerial duels won per 90, which could make him an absolute steal at his current asking price.

£44m in the current climate would be an excellent piece of business, with the midfielder having the opportunity to improve further in the years ahead given he’s just 24.

There’s little denying that Anderson would be the dream addition for many fans, but it’s evident that Gomes would be a cost-effective addition for the short term.

However, that shouldn’t discredit the Wolves star’s talents, with his numbers this season certainly going under the radar, which could make him a stellar addition for Amorim.

Danny Rohl drops big Rangers injury update as 6 stars set to miss Livingston clash

Rangers manager Danny Rohl has confirmed that as many as six players are currently injury doubts to square off against Livingston in the Scottish Premiership this Saturday.

It’s bad timing for the Gers, who are attempting to make it four league wins from four under their new manager. Victory over bottom side Livingston would also see those at Ibrox rise to third if Hibernian also fail to beat Dundee. It would be the result of the strong start that Rohl has made to turn things around following the disaster that was Russell Martin’s tenure.

Thelwell can upgrade on Souttar by signing £8m defender for Rangers

With Danny Röhl in need of defensive reinforcements, could Rangers sign an “aggressive” £8m-valued star better than John Souttar and Nasser Djiga?

ByBen Gray Nov 20, 2025

The German told reporters in the build-up to Rangers’ return to action that he believes they’re “in a good way”, but still need to work on breaking old habits on the pitch.

As January approaches, the former Sheffield Wednesday boss may also be eyeing up some potential improvements to his squad amid recent links with the likes of Kilmarnock’s David Watson.

The midfielder would add the kind of depth that the Gers could do with this weekend following the latest injury news.

Rangers vs Livingston team news

As revealed by Rohl, as many as six stars could miss Rangers’ game against Livingston this weekend following a frustrating international break. Mikey Moore, John Souttar, Derek Cornelius and Bailey Rice are all certain to be absent after picking up knocks, whilst Youssef Chermiti and Liam Kelly are facing a race against time to return to full fitness.

Rohl told reporters: “I am very happy and very proud of my players during the international break. We do have a couple of injuries from players returning, such as John Souttar, Micky Moore, and Derek Cornelius, who all have muscle injuries. Bailey Rice got injured during training, and Liam Kelly is a question mark at the moment.”

It’s a particular blow for Tottenham Hotspur loanee Moore, who scored his first Rangers goal against Dundee just before the international break. The 18-year-old, who was dubbed “brave” by former manager Martin upon arriving, has now seen his recent momentum halted by an untimely injury.

With Rangers set to face Braga in the Europa League next Thursday, Rohl will hope to have a positive update on several injuries just in time for what is a crucial game.

More exciting than Thiaw: Newcastle have their next Isak-esque "superstar"

Newcastle United were hit with a big blow in the summer transfer window when Alexander Isak opted to pursue a move to Premier League champions Liverpool.

The Magpies raked in a British record fee of £125m for the Sweden international, who scored 52 goals in his last two full seasons at St. James’ Park in all competitions, per Sofascore.

That meant that Eddie Howe and the recruitment team had plenty of work to do in the summer to bring in players to carry a goal threat, and they did a fairly decent job.

Ranking Newcastle's summer signings

The headline signing for the Magpies was, of course, the £69m addition of Nick Woltemade as a replacement for Isak, and he has scored a respectable five goals in ten Premier League games this season.

£55m signing Yoane Wissa from Brentford, though, is yet to feature for the club, due to injury, which makes it hard to judge how good of a signing he will turn out to be.

Whilst Wissa is impossible to rank, Jacob Ramsey ranks at the bottom of the pile of summer signings, right now, having failed to provide a goal or an assist in ten appearances this season for the Magpies.

As you can see in the table above, Malick Thiaw ranks at the top of the pile after his brace against Everton, as he has provided a solid presence at the back for Newcastle.

The German giant, signed from Milan for £30m, has started nine Premier League games and won a whopping 72% of his duels, per Sofascore, which makes him the most dominant defender in the squad.

Whilst Thiaw has been a brilliant signing for the club, there is a pre-existing member of the squad who may have the potential to be their next Isak-esque superstar.

The Newcastle ace who could be their next superstar

Lewis Miley was given a rare opportunity to impress in the middle of the park against Everton, in what was his third start of the Premier League season, and he showcased his class, winning 100% (3/3) of his physical duels, per Sofascore.

The Newcastle academy graduate also scored the second goal of the match, firing past Jordan Pickford with his weak foot, which came after his brilliant corner was nodded in by Thiaw in the opening minute of the game.

Miley was once hailed as “England’s next superstar” by BBC pundit Pat Nevin. Performances like his one against the Toffees at the weekend only help to back up that claim, as he looks to make his mark at senior level.

The 19-year-old whiz has made 60 first-team appearances for the Magpies to date, per Transfermarkt, but the next step for him is to nail down a place as a regular starter in midfield, which means that he will need to get in over Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, or Joelinton.

That is no easy task, but it is one that he is capable of completing, as his performance against Everton proved, because the youngster has the talent to be impactful at Premier League level, despite his age and inexperience.

As a young midfielder who can score and assist goals, with four goals and six assists at first-team level so far, Miley is an even more exciting talent than Thiaw, who is not as flashy a talent as a centre-back.

The England U21 international has the chance to be a superstar for the Magpies because he is an English and academy-grown prospect who the fans can get behind and champion as ‘one of their own’ from the local area, which adds an extra special dynamic to his potential rise to stardom.

Miley, given that he is not a regular starter yet, still has a long way to go before he is at Isak’s level of stardom at St. James’ Park, but the potential is there for him to eventually hit those heights.

It is now down to the English midfielder, though, to deliver quality performances whenever he is called upon, as he did against Everton, to prove to Howe that he has the consistency required to start week-in-week-out.

After Miley achieves that, the teenage talent can focus on being a real difference-maker at the top end of the pitch with goals and assists to take him from being a key player to a superstar.
