Inter call in psychologist to help Josep Martinez and give goalkeeper week off to help deal with harrowing car crash that resulted in elderly man's death

Inter goalkeeper Josep Martinez has been given time off and psychological support after being involved in a tragic road accident near the club’s training base that claimed the life of an 81-year-old man. The Spaniard was expected to be on the bench for Inter’s midweek game against Fiorentina, but will now take a week off to recover from the emotional trauma.

Inter offer full support to struggling Martinez

The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday morning near Inter’s training base in Fenegro, when Martinez’s car struck an elderly man who was crossing the road in a wheelchair. The Spaniard reportedly did his best to help the victim, who was later identified as Paolo Saibene, until emergency services arrived. An air ambulance being called to the scene, but the 81-year-old man was later pronounced dead in hospital.

The Serie A club quickly recognised the seriousness of the situation and moved quickly to support a visibly shaken Martinez. By the time Martinez arrived home on Monday evening, a psychologist was already waiting on him to provide support in coping with the emotional trauma, having been called in by the Milan club. According to , teammates and staff have stayed in constant contact, and Inter gave the goalkeeper the week off to recover from the tragic incident.

The incident happened shortly before 10am on Monday, leading Inter to cancel head coach Cristian Chivu’s scheduled pre-match press conference ahead of the Fiorentina game and morale was reportedly low during training, with the thoughts of the players and staff with the victim and the Spanish goalkeeper.

Club officials are also expected to contact Saibene’s family to offer condolences and support. Meanwhile, Martinez went through routine drug and alcohol tests at Saronno hospital, with club officials present to assist him. Authorities in Como are still reviewing the accident, and a full report from reconstruction experts is expected later this week.

"Unfortunately, a serious and delicate event has occurred," Inter president Beppe Marotta said on Tuesday. "Our deepest sympathies are clearly with the family of the deceased, and we also feel for our player, whom we know very well. These are situations and misfortunes that, unfortunately, are part of everyday life, but I hope that we can also benefit from this tragic situation."

Martinez settling in at Inter

This season had started well for Martinez. Born in Las Palmas, Martinez came through Barcelona’s La Masia academy before joining RB Leipzig in 2020. After two years in Germany, he moved to Genoa and later signed for the Italian giants in the summer of 2024. The Spaniard was beginning to settle in and gain confidence, earning back-to-back starts against Sassuolo and Cagliari as he worked to prove himself as a reliable option behind veteran keeper Yann Sommer.

Martinez won’t return to training until next week as he continues to recover from the emotional shock. The goalkeeper has been in touch with his teammates, coach Chivu, and club officials, who have all reached out to check on him and offer support. The 27-year-old has also stepped away from social media, deactivating his Instagram account to avoid online abuse. "Phenomenal" Celtic star looks like the biggest loser from Tounekti's rise

Celtic did not enjoy a successful and to the summer transfer window on paper after they failed to bring in the centre-forward recruits that they wanted.

The Hoops wanted to bring in two new strikers, as they allowed Adam Idah to sign for Swansea, but failed to sign any before they snapped Kelechi Iheanacho up on a free transfer the day after deadline day.

Such was the level of frustration from sections of the fanbase, Celtic felt they needed to put out a lengthy statement explaining why they did not land their targets and why they did not invest before the Champions League qualifying clash with Kairat.

That is all in the past, now, though, and supporters may end up looking back on the summer transfer window more favourably if some of the signings continue to shine on the pitch.

For example, the signing of Sebastian Tounekti from Hammarby on deadline day is already looking like a fantastic piece of business by the Hoops.

The Scottish giants reportedly splashed out a fee of £5.2m to sign the winger from the Swedish side, and that looks like a bargain on early evidence.

Why Sebastian Tounekti looks like a bargain signing for Celtic

The speed at which Tounekti has settled into life in Glasgow has been astonishing, as he looks like he has been playing in Scottish football and in hoops for years.

His performances in training must have been as impressive as what the forward has shown on the pitch, because Brendan Rodgers was willing to chuck him straight into the starting line-up against Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership.

Tounekti signed for the club on deadline day, jetted away to play for Tunisia, then returned to start against Kilmarnock after only a few training sessions with his new teammates.

That is why his performance, which was significantly better than fellow new signing Michel-Ange Balikwisha’s, was particularly impressive on his league debut.

The electric winger was a constant threat down the left flank for the Hoops with his willingness to drive at and take on defenders with the ball at his feet, as illustrated by his five completed dribbles in comparison to Balikwisha’s none.

That impressive display from the Tunisia international left him undroppable for the League Cup clash with Partick Thistle, irrespective of the fact that they were up against Championship opposition and could have rested him.

Tounekti left supporters excited to see more of him and Rodgers obliged. The winger did not let him down. He grabbed his first goal for the club in a 4-0 win for the Hoops on Sunday.

The 23-year-old dynamo, after just two appearances for the club, already looks like a bargain signing because of the quality that he has produced on the wing.

He also has the left wing position locked down and appears undroppable on current form, which may have a knock-on effect for other players in the squad.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The Celtic star who currently looks like the biggest loser from Tounekti’s rapid rise to stardom at Parkhead is the 2024/25 Premiership Player of the Season, Daizen Maeda.

Why Maeda is the biggest loser of Tounekti's Celtic form

As aforementioned, the Tunisian star has shone on the left flank for the Hoops in their last two games, which means that the position is his for now.

Meanwhile, Kelechi Iheanacho has delivered a last-minute winner, albeit from the penalty spot, and an assist in his first two appearances for the club as a centre-forward, which was clearly a position that the club wanted to strengthen in.

This has left Maeda in a bit of an awkward spot, because he mainly played as a left-winger last season and has mainly played as a centre-forward this season, per Transfermarkt.

The Japan international, was hailed as “phenomenal” and “built like a brick” by former Rangers boss Barry Ferguson, delivered an unquestionably outstanding return of 33 goals and 12 assists in 51 appearances in all competitions, per Transfermarkt, whilst starting as a left winger in 36 of those matches.

However, it remains to be seen whether that season was just a flash in the pan for Maeda. He only managed ten goals and four assists in 36 games in the 2023/24 campaign, per Transfermarkt, and has not a blinding start to the current term.

As you can see in the table above, the Japanese forward has only scored once in the first five games of the current league season, missing two ‘big chances’ on the way.

Maeda’s inconsistency in front of goal throughout his Celtic career, taking his 11 goals from 49 matches from the 2022/23 season into account, suggests that supporters should not expect him to score 33 goals again this year.

This is why it should not be out of the question for Rodgers to unleash the 27-year-old star in a different role, as a right winger with Iheanacho through the middle and Tounekti on the left.

Maeda has started 22 matches as a right winger in his Celtic career, per Transfermarkt, which shows that he is capable of playing out wide on that side of the pitch.

As good as Tounekti: 7/10 Celtic star is now a player "to be excited about"

This Celtic star was as good as Sebastian Tounekti in the comfortable win over Partick Thistle.

ByDan Emery Sep 21, 2025

So, for now, the Japan international appears to be the biggest loser of Tounekti’s rise to stardom because the reigning Premiership Player of the Year may have to play in a different position that is not his favoured one to be in the starting line-up in the short term.

Romano: "Tremendous" £75k-p/w Man Utd ace to "leave" Old Trafford in 2026

A “tremendous” Manchester United player “will leave” the club at the end of this season, according to a new claim from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Lammens enjoying life at Man Utd

It’s fair to say that too many signings have underwhelmed at Old Trafford since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, but Senne Lammens has made an encouraging start to life at the club.

The 23-year-old has come in as United’s next starter in goal, and he impressed in the 2-0 win at home to Sunderland last weekend, not least keeping an important clean sheet. Lammens is clearly enjoying life at Old Trafford currently, and former Red Devils defender Wes Brown has heaped praise on his impact.

“I think there were a couple of positive things. First of all, and maybe the most important, was Senne Lammens, the goalkeeper. He gave a very confident display, and I think that gives encouragement to the rest of the team. We had more consistency and what I mean by that is the defence was solid, and the keeper was solid.”

While Lammens’ United career is only just getting started, it looks like one of his teammates is on the verge of moving on to pastures new.

"Tremendous" Man Utd player will "100%" leave

Speaking on his YouTube channel [via Manchester World], Tyrell Malacia will depart Manchester United next summer when his contract expires.

Next summer feels like the natural time for Malacia’s career to come to an end, even though Rio Ferdinand lauded him in the past and some impressive form.

“Malacia today was tremendous, outstanding. He reminds me of Patrice Evra in many ways. He’s athletic, he looks like a pound-for-pound strong kid. There aren’t many left-backs in European or world football in the last four or five years who have gone out of a game and kept Mohamed Salah quiet. Luke Shaw’s going to have to do something to get back in this team now.”

Sadly, it just hasn’t quite worked out for Malacia at United, though, with the 26-year-old Dutchman restricted to only 47 appearances for the Red Devils in total, despite arriving from Feyenoord three years ago, and being loaned out to PSV Eindhoven earlier this year.

It's not Sesko: Man Utd "monster" is in danger of becoming another Hojlund

This Man Utd star will want his chance in the first team soon

ByJoe Nuttall Oct 12, 2025

Injuries haven’t helped, in fairness, but his performances have also too often flattered to deceive, and it doesn’t make much sense to offer him a contract extension – his current deal is £75,000-a-week which works out at £3.9m per season – instead allowing him to leave on a free transfer and enjoy a new challenge.

PIF chief tells Newcastle to sign Brazilian "monster" amid conversation with agent

Turning their attention towards South America, one PIF chief reportedly personally wants to sign a Brazilian rising star for Newcastle United in 2026.

Ross Wilson closing in on first Newcastle signing

It was a busy international break at St James’ Park, as PIF welcomed new sporting director, Ross Wilson, from Nottingham Forest.

The 41-year-old arrives hoping to add some much-needed stability to Newcastle’s transfer department and has already been welcomed with open arms by manager Eddie Howe.

Wilson hasn’t taken long to make his mark, either.

According to reports, he’s already closing in on his first signing for the club in the form of Barnsley youngster Josh Kenchington. The England Under-15s star is reportedly set to arrive after the Magpies agreed a deal to secure his signature ahead of 2026.

Compared to John Stones, who also started out at Barnsley, Kenchington could turn into a major coup for Newcastle if he realises his impressive potential in years to come.

That said, he’s not the only young player that Newcastle have set their sights on.

Those at St James’ are also reportedly targeting a major South American talent who’s making serious noise across the Atlantic.

PIF chief personally wants to sign Rayan for Newcastle

According to reports in Brazil, as relayed by Sport Witness, PIF and Newcastle chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan now personally wants to sign Rayan from Vasco da Gama in 2026 — telling an agent that he sees massive potential in the winger.

Al-Rumayyan has apparently “expressed his wish” for Newcastle to do a deal behind-the-scenes, and it is clear to see why.

The 19-year-old winger has really impressed in Brazil.

Newcastle's “exciting” 18-year-old is looking “like Gordon” out on loan

Newcastle’s wing evolution continues with teenage prodigy waiting in the wings

ByWill Miller Oct 17, 2025

With a release clause as cheap as €40m (£35m), Newcastle should be in a strong position to afford the talented winger if they fend off any competition from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.

Rayan recently became the youngest player in Vasco history to reach 10 Brazilian top flight goals since Dinamite in 1973, breaking a 52-year record, and he’s been in top form throughout the 2025 season with 15 strikes in all competitions — including eight in his last 13 league games.

What’s more, even with that release clause, Vasco value Rayan at just €30m (£26m), which hands Newcastle yet another boost if they push for his arrival.

Described as a “monster” by South American expert Nathan Joyes, Rayan is undoubtedly one to watch.

A number of South American talents have taken the Premier League by storm in recent years, and he could now be next in line.

It would be some statement from Wilson if he managed to pull off such a transfer coup so early into his Newcastle tenure.

Frank may have found Spurs' new Kane-type player in "incredible" star

How Thomas Frank would love to have a striker of Harry Kane’s quality in his current Tottenham Hotspur team, just over two years on from the striker’s move to Bayern Munich.

Richarlison is currently the club’s top scorer in the Premier League this season with three goals in seven appearances, but two of those goals came against Burnley on the opening day.

This means that the Brazil international has only scored one goal in his last six appearances in the top-flight for the Lilywhites since that brace against the newly-promoted side.

Dominic Solanke, Frank’s alternative in the striker position, has been out injured since August. However, when he did play regularly, last season, the English forward only scored nine goals from 10.97 xG, per Sofascore.

These statistics suggest that Frank does not have a reliable and consistent number nine whom he can rely upon to deliver quality in front of goal week-in-week-out in the Premier League.

Spurs would love to have Kane back in their ranks because he provided another reminder of his quality, not that anyone needed one, with two goals against Latvia on Tuesday night.

Where Harry Kane ranks among Tottenham's all-time England stars

It is hard to argue against the prolific forward being the best-ever Spurs player who has played for England, given what he has achieved at club and international level.

Kane is, of course, the club’s all-time top scorer with 280 goals in 435 appearances in all competitions, per Transfermarkt, before his move to Bayern Munich in 2023.

This means that you could make a case for the experienced striker being one of the best players in Tottenham history, rather than just one of their best English players of all time. However, some may point to the fact that he did not win a trophy with the club.

That is also the case with England. He has yet to win a major trophy with England, losing two European Championship finals, but he does boast the most impressive goal return in the country’s history, by some margin.

As you can see in the table above, Kane has scored 76 goals in 110 matches for England, having burst onto the scene as a young player at Spurs and established himself in the Three Lions set-up.

Gary Lineker and Jimmy Greaves also make the top five on that list as former Spurs players, but the Bayern Munich forward has scored more goals for both Spurs and England than they did, as great as they were in their own right.

Therefore, there is a fair argument to suggest that Kane is the best Tottenham player to ever play for England, and he still has plenty of time left to further his cause.

Meanwhile, Spurs may be brewing their next Kane-type player in North London, as they have a star who could emerge as a regular starter for the Three Lions for many more years to come.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Djed Spence has taken the long way round to establishing himself as a key player for Tottenham, but he looks to have found his feet at both club and international level.

Why Djed Spence could be a Harry Kane-type player for Spurs

The 25-year-old star, dubbed “incredible” by Alan Hutton, joined the club from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2022, and spent time on loan at Rennes, Genoa, and Leeds United in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 campaigns.

Antonio Conte and Ange Postecoglou did not immediately have him in their plans before the latter eventually brought him into the side last season.

Spence made 35 appearances in all competitions for the Lilywhites, in what was a breakthrough campaign for the young defender, and he has already emerged as a key performer for Frank, starting five of his six Premier League appearances, per Sofascore.

As you can see in the table above, the versatile full-back, who can play on the left or the right, has caught the eye with how progressive his play has been in possession, as he consistently attempts to make things happen with passes and dribbles.

On top of being impressive with the ball at his feet, Spence also prides himself on being reliable and hard to get past defensively, which is why he may nail down a place in the England team moving forward.

As you can see in the graphic above, the Spurs star put in a fantastic performance against Latvia for England on Tuesday, without being dribbled past a single time.

Spence, who Neil Warnock claimed “could run all day”, also started the 3-0 win over Wales last week and was not dribbled past a single time, per Sofascore, whilst winning 100% of his attempted tackles in that match.

Sometimes, players come into the England team after impressing at club level and do not quite look like they are at the level required for international football, or look like they need time to brush off the nerves and settle in.

Sometimes, though, players enter the set-up and never leave because they are at home right away. That was the case for Kane, who is now England’s captain and a certified legend, and it already looks like the case for Spence.

Thomas Tuchel started the 25-year-old full-back in both matches, at left-back against Wales and at right-back against Latvia, and he was brilliant in both games, as aforementioned. He did not look fazed by the occasion and showed that he has the quality to be a regular England starter.

Both full-back positions are up for grabs for England ahead of the World Cup next summer, and Spence could easily become a key player for Tuchel and his country, as Kane has over the years, if he continues in the same way that he has started his international career.

Biggest waste since Werner: Spurs must regret signing £150k-per-week flop

Therefore, Tottenham may be brewing their next Kane-type player in Spence, because he has the potential to be an England regular for many more years to come.

Joshua Zirkzee reportedly to request move away from Man Utd in January with Premier League side leading race for striker's signature

Joshua Zirkzee is reportedly ready to end his troubled Manchester United spell by formally requesting a transfer in January. The £36 million 2024 signing has fallen completely out of favour under Ruben Amorim, and West Ham United are leading the race to rescue the Dutch striker from his Old Trafford nightmare after a torrid year where he has struggled to find any form.

  • Zirkzee to request transfer

Zirkzee is set to ask Manchester United for a move away when the transfer window reopens in January as per the Daily Star. The 24-year-old forward has endured a miserable stint since joining from Bologna in 2024, managing only seven goals in 49 appearances during his first season before falling out of the Amorim’s plans this term. Red Devils boss Amorim has not made it clear that Zirkzee is not part of his long-term vision, however, the Dutchman has slipped behind new arrivals Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko in the pecking order.

West Ham United have emerged as frontrunners to secure his signature, according to reports from talkSPORT. The Hammers are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements, having scored just six goals in eight Premier League games and currently sitting second bottom of the table. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo is seeking a striker to complement Jarrod Bowen and lift the team out of their early relegation battle.

Zirkzee has become increasingly frustrated with his lack of minutes, featuring only four times this season and accumulating just 74 minutes of league football. He has not scored in a Premier League match since December last year, and his peripheral role at Old Trafford has left him “desperate” to secure a move that will reignite his career. United are open to letting him leave either on loan or permanently, with the possibility of a short-term exit leading to a full transfer next summer.

  • Getty

    Zirkzee's struggles

Signed as a key part of Erik ten Hag’s rebuild, Zirkzee arrived with high expectations following an impressive season in Serie A but never truly settled into the pace and intensity of English football. Fans initially hoped he would provide competition for Rasmus Hojlund, but inconsistency and low confidence turned him into a peripheral figure long before Amorim’s arrival.

The arrival of Amorim brought no change in fortunes, as the Portuguese coach has favoured more mobile, high-pressing forwards suited to his tactical system. Zirkzee’s technical ability is undisputed, yet his lack of aggression and efficiency in front of goal have cost him opportunities. His struggles were amplified by United’s turbulent form last season and the pressure surrounding every performance, making it difficult for him to recover lost confidence.

Despite being on the fringes, Zirkzee has remained professional, continuing to train and maintain a positive presence in the dressing room. After United’s recent 2-1 win over Liverpool, he was seen celebrating enthusiastically with teammates, even putting Bruno Fernandes in a playful headlock. However, while fans admired his attitude, sources close to the player insist that the forward knows he must move on if he is to salvage his international ambitions and reignite his club career.

  • World Cup worries

Zirkzee’s situation has been further complicated by his omission from Ronald Koeman’s recent Netherlands squads. The Dutch national team manager openly criticised the striker’s performances, stating that he was not currently “good enough” to be considered for selection. Koeman specifically highlighted issues with Zirkzee’s decision-making and awareness, saying: “He wasn’t in the preliminary selection because I don’t think he’s good enough at the moment. Scanning when turning or passing often goes wrong.”

Koeman’s comments underline the urgent need for Zirkzee to secure consistent playing time ahead of next year’s World Cup, should the Netherlands qualify. The forward believes that remaining on United’s bench will only further damage his prospects of making the squad. A move to West Ham could provide the platform he needs to rebuild his form, especially given the club’s lack of reliable goal scorers.

    What comes next?

Manchester United are expected to listen to offers for Zirkzee once the January window opens. While Amorim appreciates his professionalism, he has prioritised other attacking profiles more suited to his tactical setup. The Red Devils are reportedly open to both permanent and loan exits, depending on the terms of any offer that arrives.

For West Ham, the deal presents an opportunity to revitalise their faltering frontline and secure a striker with proven experience in top European leagues. Early discussions suggest the Hammers could propose an initial loan with an option to buy, giving Zirkzee the chance to prove himself in a less pressurised environment. Sources indicate that personal terms are unlikely to be a major issue, as the Dutchman is eager to play regular football again.

Yet the home side, having been put in, recovered to be 65 for two in the powerplay, Jimmy Neesham conceding 17 and Aldridge 23 off their respective opening overs.Rishi Patel, dropped on 30, fell for 36 (18 balls), caught at mid-off as Foulkes struck again with a slower ball, the Kiwi coming out of the powerplay with 2 for 19 from three overs.Patel’s tally of two sixes was doubled by Kimber, whose muscular 27-ball 51 ended with a miscued pull to long-on to leave Leicestershire 98 for 3 in the 10th, before Shan Masood hit Raine straight to mid-off.Leicestershire had their eyes on 200-plus as Hill led a 50-run partnership in 34 balls with Ben Cox but fell short thanks to two superb ‘death’ overs from Raine, the former Foxes all-rounder taking the pace off to claim two wickets in each at a cost of just 13 runs as Hill, Cox and Logan Van Beek failed to clear fielders before Scriven was stumped.Durham’s batting powerplay almost mirrored the Foxes’ at 66 for two but lost two batters who looked in good touch as Graham Clark (29 from 13) and former Leicestershire skipper Colin Ackermann (18 from 11) fell to well-judged catches at mid-wicket and mid-off, the former having lofted Roman Walker for consecutive sixes. The home bowlers then pinned their opponents down, going five overs without conceding a boundary, which may have played a part in Alex Lees and Ollie Robinson both finding fielders as Scriven and Kimber picked up wickets, with Durham’s woes quickly compounded as Raine mistimed Scriven to mid-on and Neesham’s reverse sweep looped straight to cover, 65 for 1 having turned to 94 for 6.But Aldridge and Rhodes were able not only to staunch the flow of wickets but build a partnership that almost threatened to pull off an unlikely victory after Van Beek had conceded two sixes in a final over costing 20. Yet Salisbury came up with what was required by his skipper in the last over, Durham’s last hope disappearing when Rhodes was run out with three balls remaining.

Richard Johnson departs role as Middlesex first-team coach

Club stalwart pays price for underwhelming start to season in Championship and Blast competitions

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Jun-2025Middlesex have parted company with first-team coach, Richard Johnson, after two wins in their first seven County Championship fixtures left them sixth in Division Two. They have also only won one out of six Vitality T20 Blast games.Johnson, a former Middlesex stalwart who played more than 200 times for the club, returned as assistant coach in 2009 and then again as first-team coach, succeeding Stuart Law, in 2022. In between he spent three seasons on the coaching staff at Surrey.Although Johnson succeeded in securing promotion back to Division One of the Championship in his first season in charge, Middlesex were relegated again in 2023. Last year, they narrowly missed out on a top-two finish, as Sussex and Yorkshire pipped them to going up.Related

The club enjoyed scant success in white-ball competitions under Johnson, failing to qualify for the knockouts in either the Blast or the One-Day Cup during his time in charge. His tenure was also marked by Middlesex having had to deal with a number of off-field issues, including being put into special measures by the ECB over financial mismanagement and fighting a legal case against former chief executive, Richard Goatley. They did not sign an overseas player in 2023, but began the current season with renewed optimism after bringing in Kane Williamson (in a deal jointly financed by MCC and London Spirit), Dane Paterson and Josh Little.”Jono has put his heart and soul into the role since he returned to the club in 2022, and we thank him for all his hard work during his time as first-team coach,” Alan Coleman, Middlesex’s director of cricket, said. “Ultimately cricket is a performance business, and we do not feel that the results this season have matched the expectations that we have for the team at our disposal.”Jono is due a lot of credit for leading the team through the most difficult off-field period that we have had and has embraced the challenge of working within the financial constraints placed upon the club during his time as first-team coach. We do though have high expectations for the playing group that has been assembled during this time, and we do feel that the time is right for a change to try and maximise the talent and performances from our squad.”Jono is a modern Middlesex cricketing great and has served the club exceptionally well during his time as a player, assistant coach and first-team coach. We thank him for all that he has done for the club over many years.”
