Personal terms agreed: Man City can hurt Foden by signing £60m "menace"

Manchester City have already had a busy summer transfer window, and it has been needed.

The 2024/25 season was not at all what anyone might have expected from the Citizens; certainly Phil McNulty, BBC Sport’s chief football writer, thought they’d win the Premier League, and explained he’s “not sure this will be” the time to bet against them.

Yet, after 12 months on, we know City came third and went trophyless. It was a tough season for their biggest stars, namely Phil Foden and Erling Haaland, and the busy summer of transfers was certainly needed to help put them back on their perch.

However, Pep Guardiola’s side seem to be far from done in the transfer window, if recent reports are to be believed.

Man City's latest transfer target

Three major signings have already switched to the Etihad Stadium this summer. City signed AC Milan’s Tijani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki from Lyon and Rayan Ait-Nouri from fellow Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Now, with the window still wide open, Guardiola’s side could once again buy from within the Premier League.

According to a report from Football Insider last week, the East Mancunian side had ‘been working behind the scenes on a deal’ to sign Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest.

Nottingham Forest's MorganGibbs-Whitecelebrates

Personal terms are not considered a significant issue with this transfer. In fact, the England international is thought to have an agreement in place with City already. All that is missing is the agreement between the two clubs.

That said, it’s more likely that the player signs for Tottenham Hotspur instead. Subject of a fierce saga over the weekend, Spurs activated Gibbs-White’s £60m release clause last week, but Nottingham Forest are now considering legal action, suggesting that the Lilywhites actually made an illegal approach for the player.

As a result, that has put his move to north London in serious jeopardy, something that could allow City to strike.

Why Gibbs-White would be a good signing for Man City

There is no doubt that City need reinforcements this summer, and they have certainly made good strides so far with the three main incomings. However, adding Gibbs-White to that, after such an impressive campaign last term, would be another excellent addition.

Nottingham Forest's MorganGibbs-Whitereacts after the match

In a superb season for Forest, their number 10 was a standout player. The 25-year-old played 34 Premier League games in 2024/25, contributing an impressive seven goals and ten assists as his side qualified for the Conference League.

One thing that will surely stand out to Guardiola is Gibbs-White’s ability to create and score in big games.

Last season, he bagged a goal and created one away to Manchester United, assisted a goal at home to Spurs and at home to City themselves, with a sensational long-range pass to pick out Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The addition of the Forest star could be bad news for Foden, who did struggle last season. Coming off the back of a PFA player of the year-winning campaign, the England international certainly underwhelmed.

Morgan Gibbs-White for Nottingham Forest.

He played 45 games across all competitions, scoring jus ten goals and registering six assists, less than what Gibbs-White managed in the Premier League alone.

In the recent Club World Cup, Foden seemed more like his old self, bagging three times and providing one goal in four games.

It is not just the goal and assist numbers that might be a concern for Foden. Both players excel in the same position, a number 10 behind the striker.

Whilst the City academy graduate played on the right a lot last term, he once said himself that “I prefer it in the middle”. His England teammate played as an attacking midfielder 32 times last season, too.

There is also not much difference between the pair’s key stats, via FBref. For example, last season the Forest number 10 averaged 5.27 progressive passes and 4.08 ball recoveries per 90 minutes. Comparatively, Foden notched up an average of 5.23 progressive passes and 3.1 ball recoveries each game.

Signing Gibbs-White would be a fantastic addition for City. He is an excellent creative midfielder who works hard off the ball too, and is a “menace” going forward, according to football analyst Antonio Mango.

Whilst it could spell bad news for Foden, there is no doubt that the Forest star would be a strong signing and help City climb the table again this season.

Rabada, Maharaj seal win for South Africa against resilient West Indies

Seales picked up six wickets, Motie scored a fighting 45 but it was not enough for the hosts

South Africa secured a 10th successive Test series win against West Indies, and earned a vital second win in the World Test Championship 2023-25, with a hard-fought 40-run victory in Guyana. In the process, Keshav Maharaj became the most successful spinner in their Test history with 171 wickets, including five in this match and 13 in the series. His success eclipsed an exceptional effort from Jayden Seales, who took 12 wickets across the two matches and a career-best 6 for 61 in South Africa’s second innings in Guyana.Seales ensured West Indies were left with a gettable, but tough, target of 263 and their chase had all the makings of a classic. They slumped to 104 for 6, before a 77-run stand between hometown hero Gudakesh Motie and Joshua Da Silva put them within sight of a historic victory. Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada, South Africa’s two most reliable bowlers on the tour, denied the hosts despite a fighting effort from the tail.In a series that was tough for batters with no centuries across the two Tests, no West Indian got a second-innings half-century and they had only one partnership above fifty in the match. In contrast, two South African batters got fifties in the second innings and had three half-century stands in the match. The 63-run tenth-wicket stand between Dane Piedt and Nandre Burger in the first innings proved decisive too.Overall, it was a series for the bowlers, who benefitted from a surface that was tough for run-scoring in Trinidad and a venue with swing, seam movement and good bounce in Guyana. Shamar Joseph enjoyed his first home Test with 5 for 33 in the first innings but a collective effort from South Africa’s attack gave them the edge where it mattered the most.Wiaan Mulder and Kyle Verreynne forged a solid partnership•AFP/Getty Images

Wiaan Mulder, operating as the third seamer and sole seam-bowling allrounder, took six wickets in the Test, scored an important 34 in the second innings and shared in an 85-run sixth-wicket partnership with Kyle Verreynne to set up South Africa’s win. His contributions mitigated some of the questions over South Africa’s team composition. They were a bowler short in Trinidad and a batter short in Guyana but found a way to defend a total on a surface that was only three days old and improved for batting.Set 263, West Indies lost Mikyle Louis in the fifth over when he pressed forward and edged Rabada to Mulder at third slip. Three overs later, Rabada thought he had a second when Kraig Braithwaite, on 17, was given out lbw but the West Indian captain reviewed and replays confirmed the impact was outside off. West Indies went to lunch on 43 for 1.Braithwaite only added eight runs before Mulder beat his inside edge and hit him on the knee roll. He was given out again and reviewed again, unsuccessfully. Mulder could have had Keacy Carty, on 17, in his next over when he sliced a wide ball to point but Mulder had overstepped. Three balls later, South Africa reviewed a Burger appeal for lbw to Alick Athanaze which was also outside the line and their frustration reached boiling point. It cooled when Carty chopped Mulder on without adding to his score and South Africa were back in it.Kavem Hodge met fire with fire and took on the short ball. He pulled Mulder through mid-wicket and square leg and then scored two boundaries off three Rabada deliveries but played one shot too many when he inside-edged Rabada onto the stumps. By that stage, offspinner Piedt had been introduced into the attack for the first time in the match and tempted Athanaze with full, flighted deliveries. Athanaze struggled to turn the strike over, eventually went for a rash sweep and top-edged behind the keeper. Aiden Markram ran back from slip to take a good, high catch.Athanaze’s mistake could be blamed on inexperience but when Jason Holder, the best batter from West Indies’ first innings, holed out to long-on in Piedt’s next over, it was a sign South Africa’s strangle was working.Enter Motie, who had a disappointing series with the ball, but did his bit with the bat. Motie and Da Silva took the target to below 100. Motie was particularly severe on Piedt and took 18 runs off the 14 balls he faced from him but his attempts to take on Maharaj were not as successful. Motie was hit on the front pad as he moved back to hit the left-arm spinner away and was given out lbw. He reviewed but ball-tracking showed it was clipping leg stump. Da Silva went similarly in Maharaj’s next over, and also asked the third umpire to have a look, but the technology was in South Africa’s favour and Maharaj equalled Hugh Tayfield as South Africa’s leading spinner.Jayden Seales picked up his best figures in an innings in Test cricket – 6 for 61•AFP/Getty Images

With only two wickets left to get, and Rabada two away from 300, he was brought back on and threatened to produce the goods soon after. Jomel Warrican edged him wide of second slip and then Joseph offered a chance that went between second and third slip as both Markram and Mulder left the ball for each other. Rabada was livid but the annoyance did not last long. Four balls later, Joseph pulled him to mid-on where Temba Bavuma got hang-time with both feet off the floor and plucked the ball in his outstretched right hand to complete the catch of the series.Rabada was one wicket away from 300 but was unable to complete the feat in the match. Maharaj overtook Tayfield when Seales clipped him to David Bedingham at short leg and South Africa celebrated. Seales had been vocal with them throughout the match, so dismissing him to secure victory was even sweeter for South Africa. It would have stung Seales, who was instrumental in South Africa’s collapse. They lost their last five wickets for 22 runs in 65 balls, including the first three wickets for 8 runs in 15 balls.Warrican struck in the first over when Mulder chose to stay back in his crease and attempt a flick but missed an arm ball and was hit on the back pad. That early breakthrough prompted Kraig Braithwaite to call on Seales earlier than he may have planned, with the second new ball nine overs away. An under-pressure Maharaj chipped the second ball he faced to Motie at mid-wicket and registered a third successive duck on the tour.Seales’ next one was all skill as he beat Kyle Verreynne’s inside edge with a delivery that angled into him from wide of the crease. It also confirmed Seales’ second Test five-for. Piedt and Rabada took the lead over 250 but one over and one delivery before the second new ball was due, Rabada went forward to block Warrican and edged to Hodge at slip.West Indies took the second new ball as soon as it was available and Seales succeeded. Burger drove the fourth ball back to him and Seales reacted quickly to take the catch with both hands to his right to end South Africa’s innings 50 minutes into the third day. Burger’s duck was the third of the innings and seventh of the match for South Africa, their most since 1932.South Africa are now up to fifth on the WTC points table, with six matches left to play. West Indies remain ninth, with only one win.

Dom Sibley, Sam Curran power Surrey to Finals Day at Durham's expense

Surrey 164 for 5 (Sibley 67, Curran 52) beat Durham 162 for 8 (Jones 37, Worrall 2-14) by five wicketsDominic Sibley and Sam Curran shared a stand of 95 in 63 balls as Surrey romped to Vitality Blast final’s day with a five-wicket win over Durham at the Kia Oval.Former England opener Sibley plundered 67 in 48 balls (two sixes and six fours) while Curran, who made a hundred earlier in the competition, hit 52 in 34 balls, including four sixes as the hosts chased down a target of 163 with 12 balls to spare. The fact they needed so many was credit to the visitors who fought back from 69 for 6 thanks to 37 from Michael Jones, 24 in 15 from Bas De Leede and a gem of a cameo from Ben Raine (23 from 8) to post 162 for 8. Dan Worrall (2 for 14) and Reece Topley (2 for 20) wreaked havoc in the powerplay for Surrey. Thanks to Worrall and Topley, Surrey dominated early on. Durham’s leading scorer in the competition, Graham Clark, spooned the fifth ball from Worrall to Jordan at extra cover and Ollie Robinson chewed up 11 balls swinging and missing before being bowled by Topley.Worrall cleaned up Alex Lees with a brute of a yorker and although Brydon Carse struck his first ball over the ropes, he left soon afterwards edging Topley to wicketkeeper Burns.Colin Ackerman was run out by a brilliant direct hit from Sam Curran and when Ashton Turner’s brief counterattack (26 from 21) was ended by Sibley’s catch at deep square Durham were 69 for 6 in the 13th over.Scottish international Jones hit back, clubbing Jordan over extra for six. De Leede, who survived a bungled run-out attempt by Burns, followed suit as the pair raised a 50-stand in 30 balls before Sam Curran bowled De Leede off his pads.Jones though kept swinging and Raine (23 from 8), twice cleared the ropes in the final over bowled by Jordan to take the visitors to 162.Buoyed by taking 92 from the last seven, Durham began well in the field, Carse striking twice in five balls to remove first the dangerous Will Jacks and then Laurie Evans caught at slip. Two men who not so long ago were opening for England, Rory Burns and Sibley were trusted with steadying the ship and the latter defied his reputation as something of a plodder with four boundaries in the powerplay. The introduction of spin for the first time on the night in the shape of Callum Parkinson was the undoing of Burns, who hoisted him to safe hands in the deep.Sam Curran joined Sibley as the run-rate rose, 30 balls ticking by without a boundary before the former broke the shackles with a huge six off Nathan Sowter. Parkinson was similarly dispatched.De Leede spurned the chance to take the England all-rounder’s scalp when he dropped a tough caught and bowled with Curran on 31 and with that the hosts assumed complete command.Sibley went to 50 with a glorious six over mid-on before Curran struck a delivery from Sowter almost clean out of The Oval.Only 15 were needed when Sibley fell and though Curran too left before the end, Surrey got home comfortably.

England search for answers against impressive world champions

Australia have shown their depth over the first two matches and will be favourites to clinch the series in Durham

Andrew McGlashan23-Sep-2024Big PictureAustralia have played like world champions, England have played like a team that has only just come together and are trying to figure out their next style of one-day cricket. Which is exactly the position of both sides. What will (or at least should) frustrate Harry Brook and Marcus Trescothick – stand-in captain and coach – is that England have had their opportunity in both games: at Trent Bridge they were 213 for 2 in the 33rd over before falling away to Australia’s collection of spinners and at Headingley they had the visitors 161 for 6 and 221 for 9 before Alex Carey swung the momentum.Related

Could more crushing ODI failure be just what England need?

Carey takes his chance to silence hostile Headingley

In both matches, Australia have found key performances from potentially unlikely sources, firstly with Marnus Labuschagne’s three wickets then Carey’s superb 74 off 67 balls from an opening that only presented itself due to Josh Inglis’ injury. With Australia struck down by illness ahead of Trent Bridge, it always felt as though that was going to prove a big missed opportunity for England and so it proved as Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Glenn Maxwell returned at Headingley and combined to take 7 for 119. With an eye to the future, Aaron Hardie’s performance was also significant with 2 for 26.England have some of the building blocks to make their attempts at rejuvenation a success. Ben Duckett is in excellent form, Jamie Smith is a high-class batter whatever colour ball he is facing, Brydon Carse could yet replicate the Liam Plunkett role – even if Carse says it’s never been spoken about – Adil Rashid remains world-class (although replacing him is a concern) and there is a collection of quicks with genuine pace. However, at the moment they seem unable to quite find their groove, especially with the bat, with Brook’s comments about not caring whether batters are caught attempting to clear the boundary not yet carrying the weight of when Eoin Morgan backed his team’s ultra-aggressive mantra in 2015. There is time yet for the rebuild to come together; Chester-le-Street would be a good place to start to at least ensure this series remains undecided for a few more days.Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)

The Huddle: Smith recalls his battle with Archer in Ashes 2019

In the spotlight: Phil Salt and Steven SmithPhil Salt appears to have the task of playing the ultra-aggressive opener but he hasn’t looked entirely convincing in the first two matches. At Trent Bridge he seemed somewhat perplexed when bowled as he gave himself room against Ben Dwarshuis then at Headingley he was given a working over by Josh Hazlewood. He survived a review for a caught behind and was dropped at slip as he flayed at Hazlewood’s relentless short-of-a-length line around off stump before edging through to Carey. He will, no doubt, be fully backed to continue in the same vein but Australia’s quick bowlers are not easy to smash off their lengths.Back home, Steven Smith is at the centre of the key debate in Australian men’s cricket – or at least as much as these things raise attention during the September football final season – about where he will bat when India arrive for the Test series. For now he’s been at No. 3 and 4 in this series and would no doubt like a decent score. He looked in good touch in the opening game before offering a return catch to Liam Livingstone then was beaten by a superb delivery from Matthew Potts at Headingley. There is a good chance of a second rematch with Jofra Archer which always makes for compelling viewing.Team news: Archer in line for return, Australia hopeful illness has passedArcher would appear likely to slot back in having been given his expected rest at Headingley. Who he replaces will be interesting: Olly Stone bowled with good pace in Leeds, Potts was excellent and Carse adds some batting depth at No. 8. England felt potentially a seamer light in the last game, but without a true pace-bowling allrounder it’s hard to squeeze another option in.England: (possible) 1 Ben Duckett, 2 Phil Salt, 3 Will Jacks, 4 Harry Brook (capt), 5 Jamie Smith (wk), 6 Liam Livingstone, 7 Jacob Bethell, 8 Brydon Carse, 9 Jofra Archer, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Matthew PottsBen Dwarshuis has flown home after picking up a pectoral injury which restricted him to just four overs on debut in Nottingham. However, other than that Australia are hopeful of having a full squad to select from for the first time in the series. If Inglis is fit it creates an interesting call to make after Carey’s success in the last match. Inglis could play as a specialist batter, but there isn’t room for that, either, unless there’s some rotation. The north of England in September may require an extra pace-bowling option with Cameron Green and Sean Abbott available.Australia: (possible) 1 Travis Head, 2 Matthew Short, 3 Mitchell Marsh (capt), 4 Steven Smith, 5 Marnus Labuschagne, 6 Alex Carey (wk), 7 Glenn Maxwell, 8 Aaron Hardie, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Josh Hazlewood, 11 Adam ZampaPitch and conditionsTeams were forced to train indoors on Monday but the forecast for game day is a little better, albeit with the chance of showers. To say it will be mild might be stretching things. Overhead conditions could assist the bowlers although pitches at Chester-le-Street are usually pretty good for batting in one-day cricket.Stats and trivia Starc needs one more wicket to move into fourth spot alone in Australia’s ODI tally. He equalled Mitchell Johnson on 239 during the previous game. England have two ODI centuries in the XI which played at Trent Bridge – one apiece for Duckett and Salt – while Australia had 28. England have a 3-1 winning record at Chester-le-Street against Australia. In 2018, Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh struck centuries but England comfortably chased 311 as Jason Roy made 101 off 83 balls. Only three players from that game will likely appear this time: Carey, Travis Head and Adil RashidQuotes”There have been big changes, new batters, new bowlers. It will take time. It will always take time when it is a rebuilding process. We have got every base covered in terms of bowling, batting, keeping. Everything is there for us.”
Adil Rashid on England’s new era“There’s been a big emphasis on being flexible, being adaptable, there’s so many players who have cemented their spots – Travis at the top, Mitch [Marsh] through the middle then you’ve got Smith, Labuschagne – so it’s just about filling the roles as they pop up, whether it’s with the bat or ball, just being adaptable, jump up and down the order, and be able to contribute wherever possible.”

Celtic can sign a better ST than Kvistgaarden in "complete" £6.8m star

Celtic could be in the market to bring in more attackers to bolster their squad between now and when the summer transfer window slams shut at the start of September.

One player who does not appear likely to end up at Parkhead this summer, though, is long-term target and Denmark international Mathias Kvistgaarden.

The Daily Record reported earlier this summer that Celtic cooled their interest in the striker, after they failed to sign him in January and last year, ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Kvistgaarden is now reportedly closing in on a move to Championship side Norwich City, having turned down the chance to sign for Ligue 1 outfit Lens.

What Kvistgaarden could have brought to Celtic

If the Hoops had managed to secure a deal for the forward this year, or last year when they were interested, then they could have had a lethal centre-forward option in the Scottish Premiership.

However, it would have been a gamble for the club because he has yet to prove himself outside of the Danish top-flight, in which the striker has been fantastic.

As you can see in the table above, Kvistgaarden has made a big impact in front of goal in the last two Superliga seasons for Brondby, which suggests that the potential was there for him to be an exciting signing for the Premiership champions.

Celtic manager BrendanRodgersbefore the match

However, Celtic could find an even better striker for Brendan Rodgers this summer by swooping to sign £6.8m Girona centre-forward Bojan Miovski instead.

Why Celtic should sign Bojan Miovski

The Hoops were linked with an interest in the former Aberdeen man earlier this summer, and they should press ahead with a move for the Macedonia international to bolster their squad.

Miovski could be an even better striker than Kvistgaarden for Celtic because he has already proven his quality in the Premiership, and shown potential in European competitions.

The left-footed marksman scored 32 Premiership goals in two seasons with the Dons, in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 campaigns, whilst Kvistgaarden has only scored 25 Superliga goals in the last two terms combined.

This shows that Miovski has proven that he can score goals more frequently than the Danish forward whilst already proving himself in the league that Celtic play in.

Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski.

The Macedonia international has also scored two goals in five Conference League games and two goals in two Europa League qualifiers, whilst Kvistgaarden has never scored above the level of Conference League qualifiers.

This suggests that Celtic could have more confidence in Miovski’s ability to deliver on the European stage, given what he has achieved in his career, which is another reason why he could be an even better centre-forward option for the club.

The Girona striker, who was once dubbed a “complete number 9” by journalist Josh Bunting, has the experience in Scotland to be able to hit the ground running for the Hoops, making him an ideal target.

Kvistgaarden, meanwhile, has never played in Scotland and there are no guarantees that he would adapt to the league, which is not a concern that they would have about Miovski.

Man Utd now ready to step up move for £17m star who's wowed by Old Trafford

With Andre Onana set to miss Manchester United’s pre-season tour through injury, INEOS are reportedly set to step up their interest in signing a £17m replacement.

Onana suffers untimely injury

In his first summer under Ruben Amorim, Onana would have been one of many players hoping to put last season behind him and finally convince the new manager that he’s good enough to keep his place. Before the former Inter Milan man has even received the opportunity to hand Amorim his verdict, however, injury has struck at the worst-possible time.

In a summer which has seen Manchester United linked with moves for the likes of Emiliano Martinez and Marco Carnesecchi, Onana could have done with some fortune on his side. Ultimately, however, his Old Trafford place is now more at risk than ever before.

In more bad news for the goalkeeper, INEOS have not hesitated to spend big so far this summer, either, and their next spending spree could be used to welcome another shot-stopper.

Before then, of course, it looks as though Bryan Mbeumo is set to finally arrive from Brentford in a deal worth as much as £70m. The impressive winger will join Matheus Cunha in an attempt to help transform a frontline which was often found wanting last season.

It’s not just the duo who could be handed the task of turning things around at Old Trafford, though. Reports are now suggesting that Manchester United are poised to intensify their move to sign Benjamin Sesko. The RB Leipzig striker has looked destined for the Premier League for some time and could now finally get his big-money move.

The Serbian’s arrival would end United’s attacking overhaul too, allowing them to shift their attention back towards replacing Onana.

Man Utd step up interest in Lammens

According to talkSPORT, INEOS and Manchester United are set to step up their interest in signing Senne Lammens, who Royal Antwerp value at around £17m this summer. The shot-stopper, still just 23 years old, is an ideal candidate to replace Onana and has already spoken about interest from Old Trafford in the past.

The Belgian told reporters earlier this year: “The first time I heard I thought, ‘Wow’. Immediately a world [renowned] team that follows you. That is special. Of course, I was also spoken to about it a lot and when I made a save in training, it was United this, United that [from colleagues]… It’s only positive.

“Especially because it’s the best competition in the world and my profile, my stature and way of playing, is similar to English football. You have to physically hold your own there and that suits me.”

Lammens enjoyed a “superb season” last time out, according to scout Jacek Kulig, and if his previous interview is anything to go by, the Belgian wouldn’t need much convincing to join Manchester United this summer.

Vaughan, Leach lead spin surge as Somerset ignite title hopes

Spinners Archie Vaughan and Jack Leach sparked a dramatic late Surrey collapse as Somerset boosted hopes of a first ever Vitality County Championship title with a thrilling 111-run win over the Division One leaders at Taunton.Chasing 221 to win on a turning pitch, Surrey were bowled out for 109 with less than five minutes left in the game, 18-year-old Vaughan claiming five for 38 and match figures of 11 for 140, while Leach finished with five for 37. Only Dom Sibley (56) and Ben Foakes (20) offered prolonged resistance, but their fourth-wicket stand of 49 in 29 overs looked to have secured a draw before seven wickets fell for 14 runs at the end.Somerset had extended their second innings score from an overnight 194 for fine to 224 all out, thanks to more heroics from the injured Tom Banton, last man out for 46, and Craig Overton, unbeaten on 49 after an unlikely stand of 71, which gave their side genuine hope of victory. They claimed 21 points from the game to Surrey’s five and closed the gap at the top of the table to just eight points with two matches to play. The final day began with the sight of Banton limping slowly out to bat with a runner, as he had done the previous evening. After two balls, he had to drag his damaged ankle back to the pavilion again as rain interrupted play.A resumption at 11.05am, with eight overs lost, saw Overton and Banton bring up a half-century partnership off 61 balls. The most extraordinary of Banton’s six fours came when he reverse swept Shakib Al Hasan, despite severely limited foot movement. The memorable 65-ball innings ended when Shakib found a way through Banton’s defence and bowled him, leaving Overton one short of a deserved fifty, after facing 78 balls and occupying the crease for two hours and 16 minutes.Surrey were left with a tricky 13 overs to bat before lunch, but Rory Burns and Sibley negotiated it with skill and calmness. The pattern continued after another shower had delayed the restart until 1.20pm, with three more overs lost. But as the effects of the roller began to wear off, the ball began to turn sharply and Vaughan struck a double blow in the 22nd over, having Burns caught behind for 15 and then bowling Ryan Patel for a third-ball duck. At the other end, Leach beat Ben Geddes with three successive deliveries in the 29th over.Geddes’ luck ran out in Leach’s next over when he was pinned lbw and at 46 for three, Surrey were in a deepening hole. Sibley and Foakes abandoned any attacking intent and met the nagging accuracy of Somerset’s spinners with a spell of solid defence, bringing 50 up in the 38th over. Both were quick to make for the pavilion when rain started falling again at 2.45pm with the score 63 for three. Tea was taken with Sibley unbeaten on 38.The final session began at 3.20pm with another three overs lost. Leach continued to probe and beat the outside edge, but after 44 consecutive overs of spin, teenager Vaughan took a break and was replaced by Craig Overton.Brett Randell then replaced Leach, who had sent down 14 maidens in 24 overs. After a few overs of seam, the spinners changed ends in a final Somerset throw of the dice, Leach switching to the River End.A swept single off Vaughan took Sibley to a 165-ball half-century that perfectly suited the situation. But then Foakes edged Leach to Lewis Gregory at first slip and when Sibley’s defiance ended in similar fashion in the left-armer’s next over, panic set in for the visitors.Gregory claimed a third slip catch to send back Shakib and give Vaughan his ninth wicket of the match. It became ten when Tom Curran aimed to cut the 18-year-old and got an inside edge onto his stumps.Cameron Steel fell lbw to Vaughan and Surrey were eight down with a minimum of nine overs remaining. Jordan Clark and Kemar Roach ran down the overs with an obdurate partnership before Clark was bowled by Vaughan for a 47-ball duck.Last man Dan Worrall came out to be surrounded by close fielders and lasted just two balls before Leach dismissed him leg before to spark wild celebrations among team-mates and supporters.

Better signing than Gyokeres: Arsenal agree initial fee for "superstar"

In a few weeks, Arsenal will begin the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, and their eyes will be riveted on the prize.

Having fallen short in each of the past three seasons, the Gunners know that this is a big one, with Mikel Arteta’s side having gone five years without silverware.

But the improvements have been vast, these recent years. A lack of trophies aside, this has been an incredible resurgence for a giant who had been cast to the wayside before.

Arsenal manager MikelArteta

There’s a strong case for Arsenal’s unfortunate injury record across the 2024/25 term to have impeded them in their pursuit of glory, but Arteta has revised the issues and made some impactful summer signings to take his squad to the next level.

And the months of work have now been crowned by the addition of Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres.

Why Arsenal signed Viktor Gyokeres

Technically, Gyokeres isn’t yet an official Arsenal player, but the centre-forward has been the subject of an agreed £64m deal that will see him stand as Arteta’s chief goal-getter over the coming years.

The Sweden international scored 97 goals and added 28 assists across 102 matches for Sporting, winning the Liga Portugal in both of his seasons at the club.

Aged 27, he’s in the prime of his career, described by former Coventry City coach Adi Viveash as being a “physical machine”. He has what it takes to become one of the leading Premier League strikers of his era, rivalling the best over the coming years.

There’s no question that Gyokeres will be a fantastic signing for Arsenal, but there remains that slight uncertainty, for he has yet to ply his trade in the Premier League.

However, Arsenal are lining up another star who could prove to be an even better signing – and that’s not to Gyokeres’ discredit.

Arsenal agree fee for Premier League star

According to Football Transfers, Arsenal are confident that they will complete the signing of Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze this summer, having agreed to pay his £68m release clause through a series of manageable instalments.

Eze scored the winning goal as Palace won the FA Cup final against Manchester City last season, and has been expected to leave for a new challenge, having already agreed personal terms with the Gunners.

The £100k-per-week talent has also attracted interest from Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, but it’s Arteta’s side who are set to enjoy his qualities next season and beyond, should the finer details of the transfer go through without a hitch.

What Eberechi Eze would bring to Arsenal

Like Gyokeres, Eze is 27, and would provide the Gunners with maturity and completeness of development. The Three Lions star’s 2024/25 season proved to the world that he has what it takes to become a star member of one of Europe’s elite outfits.

Pundit Rio Ferdinand hailed his “unique” style of play back in March, going on to claim he could “play for one of the top teams” in the world.

A dribble-happy attacking midfielder, Eze’s low centre of gravity, immense core strength and skilled passing game make him a difficult opponent indeed, with so many different ways to hurt his opponents.

Typically used as a left-sided midfielder by Oliver Glasner over the past 18 months, Eze completed 82% of his passes in the Premier League last term, as per Sofascore, while averaging two dribbles, 1.7 key passes and 4.8 successful duels per game, underscoring his roundedness.

His ability to shift, seamlessly, between the left flank and a more central attacking position bespeaks his sharpness and intelligence. Eze, in this regard, could plug two holes for Arteta, with both Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli linked with moves away this summer.

While Eze has become more potent over the past few years, he remains a robust physical profile who could dynamise the club’s overall attacking build-up.

As per FBref, he ranked last season among the top 11% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe for shot-creating actions, the top 10% for successful take-ons and the top 14% for ball recoveries per 90.

There’s no question that Gyokeres would bring to Arsenal a newfound degree of goalscoring quality, but there’s also no doubt that Eze has a skill set so impressive that he could come to nail down a starting berth on the left flank and emerge as one of Arteta’s most trusted lieutenants.

Sporting CP's ViktorGyokeresreacts

Will Arsenal’s soon-to-be-sealed striker hit the ground running in England’s top flight? Will he manage to retain that same level of destructive brilliance in tougher conditions, against steelier defenders?

These are the questions, and we shall soon find out. In any case, Eze has built himself up over a number of years in Europe’s highest-quality division, and, of course, with Gyokeres as a target man in the middle, both could enjoy the fruits of each other’s labours.

In Gyokeres, Arsenal will secure the centre-forward they have desired over the past several years. However, Eze might prove to be the better signing, all things considered.

His higher fee reflects that, and so does the consistency for Palace in the Premier League over the past five years, even leading analyst Ben Mattinson to call him a “superstar”.

Worth more than Isak & Gyokeres: Arsenal struck gold on "world-class" star

Arsenal have a bigger talent than all of the high-profile names floating about due to this summer’s transfer window.
