WHAT HAPPENED?
The 22-year-old midfielder was quick to reject Valencia's extension proposal, but the Spanish club are confident that they can get him to put pen to paper with further discussions. According to , the Spaniard is happy to continue at Valencia but wants the club to meet certain criteria, ranging from increasing his wages to competing at the top level of football rather than fighting for survival in the Spanish League.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Guerra's current contract expires in 2027, and Valencia are interested in extending it to 2029. In the contract proposed to Guerra, the club offered him increased wages, which would have increased year-on-year and would have earned the midfielder €15 million (£13m/$17m) over four years. However, Guerra didn't like the initial base salary, finding it unfeasible. Valencia consider Guerra to be one for the future and are willing to accommodate changes to the offer.
Guerra's demands, however, go beyond the salary figures. In addition to increased wages, the player wants the club to have a better sporting project, one that can compete at the top level. United and Milan have shown interest, with the latter having even launched a bid of €16m (£14m/$18m) plus €4m in bonuses.
DID YOU KNOW?
Valencia are not willing to part ways with Guerra, not only because they don't want to lose out on a future star, but also because his contract has a sell-on clause. As per the sell-on clause, Villarreal, Guerra's former club, will receive 30 per cent of the transfer fee from Guerra's sale. This means that for the club to make a profit of over €20m (£17m/$23m), Valencia will have to sell Guerra for more than €28m (£24m/$32m), a figure that no club is willing to match at this time.

WHAT NEXT FOR GUERRA?
The player's camp are receptive to the contract offered, as they believe that through further discussions, they will reach a common ground. Guerra, who was born and raised in Valencia, is reportedly interested in continuing his career at Mestalla Stadium. Valencia are also optimistic about retaining Guerra and have since rejected Milan's offer.

Andrew McGlashan30-Jan-2024Shamar Joseph has been ruled out of his ILT20 stint with Dubai Capitals due to the toe injury he picked up during the Gabba Test.Although scans showed no fracture after he was clattered on the boot by a Mitchell Starc yorker, Joseph battled pain on the fourth day to produce one of the greatest spells in Test history as he claimed 7 for 68 to inspire West Indies to a famous eight-run win – their first victory in Australia since 1997. At the start of the start of the day, he had not expected to feature before he was dosed up on painkillers by the team physio.Once introduced into the attack, Joseph bowled unchanged to rip through Australia’s batting line and was still nudging 150kph late in the spell. “I’m not putting down this ball until the last wicket falls,” he told his captain Kraigg Brathwaite.Related

He had been due to head straight to the ILT20 having signed with Capitals before the Australia tour but will now return home to recover before travelling to the PSL where he was signed as a replacement player by Peshawar Zalmi overnight.Joseph is unlikely to be short of offers from T20 leagues around the world after the stunning start to his career where he claimed Steven Smith with his first delivery and claimed two five-wicket hauls. However, in the aftermath of his Gabba heroics, Joseph committed to always being available for West Indies duty.”I will always be here to play Test cricket for the West Indies,” he said. “I am not afraid to say this live. Numerous leaders from around the region also posted their praise and congratulations on social media.Managing Joseph will now need to be at the forefront of West Indies’ selectors’ thoughts and balancing the offers he gets from overseas. During the spell in Brisbane, Ian Bishop expressed how he hoped money could be found to protect Joseph.”Important for the board, Guyana govt & cooperate bodies to find a way to allocate funds to compensate Shamar Joseph & 1 or 2 other fast bowlers to keep them in the Caribbean & control how much cricket they play,” Bishop posted on X. “Their pace is everything. Don’t allow burnout.”Although Joseph was never due to feature in the white-ball leg of the Australia tour, he could yet come into contention for the T20 World Cup in June which will be hosted in the Caribbean and West Indies. West Indies will be captained by Shai Hope and coached by Daren Sammy. Three T20Is follow, for which Rovman Powell will take over as captain.

The deal reportedly includes a purchase option worth €11 million (£9m/$13m) for and a repurchase clause in favour of Barca. THE BIGGER PICTURE
The 22-year-old has struggled to regain his early momentum since bursting onto the scene in 2019. Multiple injuries disrupted his development, and he featured only sparingly under Hansi Flick last season, making 11 appearances – just three starts – and logging under 300 minutes. His 2023 loan spell at Brighton yielded four goals in 27 games. A move to Monaco, where he’ll compete in the Champions League and link up with Pogba, offers a fresh start.
DID YOU KNOW?
Fati is Barcelona’s youngest-ever Champions League goalscorer, having netted at just 17 years and 40 days old. That record stands even ahead of rising star Lamine Yamal, who trails by 28 days.

Newcastle United were thrashed 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium as Manchester City’s £59m winter signing Omar Marmoush bagged a first-half hat-trick.
While City have been out of sorts this term, they showcased some of their old flair and guile against Eddie Howe’s outfit, who slump to seventh in the Premier League standings, nursing a third defeat in four top-flight matches.
The error-strewn display has served as a reality check of sorts. Howe has plenty of work to do in order to restore United’s Champions League pedigree and prepare for a Carabao Cup final against Liverpool.
Newcastle's Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon
One thing that Howe will need to do at Wembley – and over the coming months in the league – is get the team selection right. He definitely didn’t against Pep Guardiola’s side.
Howe gets it wrong
Howe is an expert tactician, crafting a system that has bore dividends for Newcastle over the past few seasons. However, Pep seems to have his number and proved this with a comprehensive win over the Magpies.
One of the most peculiar decisions was to keep Kieran Trippier in the starting 11 in lieu of Tino Livramento, who has his place to the 34-year-old after his clean sheet display against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup.
He lost both of his duels, as per Sofascore, and failed to contain a Man City side that played with gusto and enthusiasm and, most importantly, confidence. The shift when Livramento came on at the interval wasn’t significant, but the younger man’s energy and crispness in the tackle – winning both of his duels – did make a big difference in reducing the hosts’ threat.
Omar Marmoush in action for Manchester City
Newcastle didn’t hit their rhythm, instead playing to City’s strengths and continuing a miserable and abiding run against them: Newcastle have only beaten City once in the Premier League since the 2005/06 season.
Trippier’s right-back berth didn’t help things, but his opposite number at left-back, Lewis Hall, should be incredibly frustrated with his meek showing.
Howe must boldly drop Lewis Hall
Trippier was pretty bad, and it was a questionable decision to place him in the starting line-up with Livramento’s athleticism more suited to the rigorous test. However, Hall should have done far better against Man City.
Lewis Hall in action vs Man City's Savinho
The 20-year-old was described as “the best left-back in the country” by correspondent Dominic Scurr earlier in the campaign but showed little sign of authority as he was steamrolled by the energetic Savinho.
As is the nature of social media, Hall will be rebuked for his performance in Manchester, and while he was indeed poor, there’s little question that he’s one of the most talented young players in the Premier League.
However, he’ll be dismayed that his efforts against the four-in-a-row champions didn’t reflect that.
Lewis Hall for Newcastle
The Northern Echo’s Scott Wilson was particularly scalding in his post-match comments, noting that the deservedly-hooked Trippier was culpable for a ‘dreadful error’ in the build-up to Marmoush’s opening strike, but that Hall wasn’t much better.
In fact, Hall wasn’t any better. Also branded with a 3/10 match rating, Wilson said this of Hall’s performance: ‘His defensive limitations were repeatedly exposed by Savinho – especially poor for City’s third goal.’
It wasn’t all doom and gloom. City’s relentless attacking called the full-back into making seven tackles, also winning eight of his 11 duels on the afternoon, as per Sofascore. However, such metrics don’t paint the full picture, with reporter Adam Clery making a candid statement on the woeful effort.
The FourFourTwo journalist said: “Lewis Hall’s been outstanding this season, but he’s currently putting in one of the single worst defensive performances I’ve seen in a long time. Backing off all the way into his own box and then still getting ran past. He looks like he’s 36.”
BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton also chipped in on the criticism, singling Hall out and commenting that he looked “absolutely petrified of Savinho,” going on to say that the English defender couldn’t “cope” with the intensity and fleet-footedness of his adversary.

Newcastle will brush themselves off after this setback – especially with a crucial run of games coming up – but the likes of Hall will use this as a brutal reality check, one that might prompt Howe to make a bold intervention and place maybe Dan Burn or even Matt Targett at left-back for next weekend’s crucial contest against third-place Nottingham Forest at St. James’ Park.
Forest are no joke but the business period of the campaign will hit United like a freight train, with a trip to Anfield coming just three days after the clash against Nuno Espirito Santo’s men.
Newcastle United manager EddieHowebefore the match
Newcastle actually won 49% of the duels on the day, also coming out with a 62% tackle success rate compared to Man City’s 50% win rate.
The difference is that the Sky Blues were incisive and pounced on the mistake-filled and unconvincing individual efforts of the Magpies.
The consensus at full-time was that Newcastle were uncharacteristically passive, lacking their usual bite and synergy – especially in the middle of the park.
The likes of Hall will be dejected after such a poor outing, but there’s still everything to play for over on Tyneside, and Newcastle have proved time and time again their powers of recovery and ability to weather the storm and come out on top.
It’s clear that Livramento should take his berth back from the ageing Trippier on the right, and while Hall’s got a big future ahead of him and has been an integral cog in the Howe machine this year, he hasn’t been named as a substitute since September, and a tweak may be worthwhile in the short term.

Newcastle United are now expected to pursue a summer move for an “incredible” player, and they are planning to spend big, according to a report.
Newcastle limited by PSR in January
Newcastle didn’t make a single addition to their squad in the January transfer window, amid PSR restrictions, but Eddie Howe remains optimistic about his squad, stating it is “lighter in numbers but high in quality.”
Despite there being no new signings, there were some outgoings this winter, with Lloyd Kelly completing a move to Juventus, although Howe has admitted he was “very reluctant” to sanction the defender’s departure.
Kelly’s departure means the Magpies are a little lighter on options at centre-back, meaning they may look to strengthen in that area in the summer, and they have already identified a target.
Newcastle "will offer" £120,000-a-week star record-breaking new contract
This would be unbelievable news for the Magpies.
1 ByHenry Jackson Feb 4, 2025
According to a report from London World, Newcastle are expected to pursue a summer move for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, who they have now been chasing for quite some time, failing to get a deal done before the start of the season.
After having to deal with PSR restrictions for 18 months, PIF are expected to be handed the opportunity to spend big in the summer, having balanced the books somewhat by selling Kelly this winter.
Newcastle United'sLloydKellybefore the match
Palace were holding out for a fee of £75m for Guehi last month, meaning Tottenham Hotspur were unable to get a deal done despite making a £70m bid, however the asking price is set to drop in the summer if he doesn’t sign a new deal at Selhurst Park.
The 24-year-old has been picked out as a target as Newcastle chiefs believe he has the ability to lead the team forward in the years to come, and there will be renewed hope they can get a deal over the line, with PSR no longer such a major concern.
Exciting news for Newcastle
The Magpies have been chasing the England international for quite some time now, and for good reason, given the level of his performances at club and international level.
Prior to Euro 2024, the defender was lauded by teammate Eberechi Eze, who said: “He’s an incredible player, an incredible person,”
“He’s just ready. You can see it in the way he plays, in the way he carries himself. He’s a leader. And for someone his age, he’s extremely mature. I have no questions about him, I know he’s capable to do whatever he’s called upon to do.”
The centre-back went on to prove Eze right with his performances in the tournament, emerging as a key player for the Three Lions and missing just one game, which was due to suspension.
Not only is the Englishman solid defensively, he has also proven himself to be a goal threat this season, bagging three Premier League goals and being nominated for the January goal of the month award.
The fact Guehi’s price could drop in the summer is an added incentive for Newcastle to get a deal done, but it may be difficult to win the race for his signature, with so many other top clubs lurking.
West Zone’s sought-after batting stars, including Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer flattered to deceive as South Zone restricted them to 250 for 8 on the opening day of the Duleep Trophy final in Coimbatore on Wednesday. It was young Gujarat wicketkeeper Het Patel (96 not out) and his 87-run stand for the ninth wicket with Saurashtra’s Jaydev Unadkat (39*) that helped West Zone recover from a precarious 167 for 8 to a safer 250 for 8 at the end of 90 overs. But much was expected of an incredibly strong West Zone’s batting line-up that boasts of Rahane (8), Iyer (37), Sarfaraz Khan (34), Yashasvi Jaiswal (1) and current India A captain Priyank Panchal (7).For South Zone, pace bowlers Basil Thampi (2 for 42 in 15 overs) and CV Stephen (2 for 39 in 10 overs) blew away the West Zone top order within first half an hour. And then in-form left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore (3 for 80 in 32 overs) first choked and then ran through the middle order before lower-order resistance somewhat brought West Zone back into the game.In the morning, the Andhra left-arm seamer Stephen had Jaiswal poking outside the off stump and caught by wicketkeeper Ricky Bhui.Rahane started with a boundary but old habits came to haunt him as Ravi Teja snapped one in the slip cordon when Kerala speedster Thampi got him to edge one behind the stumps. For Panchal, Stephen’s delivery straightened a touch after pitching and had the India A captain plumb infront of the stumps.Once it was 16 for 3, the Mumbai pair of Sarfaraz and Iyer came together and looked like resurrecting the innings with a 48-run stand. While Sarfaraz held one end up, Iyer played his strokes, that included four fours and a six.It was Sai Kishore, who had Iyer caught by B Indrajith just when the batter looked set and got Sarfaraz in identical manner to end his 117-ball vigil. The Tamil Nadu left-arm spinner then rocked West Zone with his third scalp as left-hand batter Shams Mulani was trapped by a delivery that turned back a shade into him.Patel, on his part, stemmed the rot, during his 178-ball stay in which there were six fours and a six. He first added 63 for the seventh wicket with Atit Seth (25) before Thampi got a breakthrough with the old ball.K Gowtham then had Tanush Kotian before Patel and Unadkat defied South Zone for 21 overs.
