Spurs should have sold star who’s earning more than Bissouma & Van de Ven

Tottenham Hotspur have not quite enjoyed the dream start to the season but Ange Postecoglou is coaching his side well and there is more than enough there to expect promise across the year.

Last season, Tottenham created 90 big chances in the Premier League and only Liverpool (102) Manchester City, and Newcastle United (both 97) created more.

This year, we can read into the opening matches of the term and determine that Spurs still play slick and stylish football and have myriad tools to carve opponents open. Their 48 shots taken are surpassed only by Nottingham Forest (53) at this early stage.

The Lilywhites' 68.3% average possession also underscores the tactical ethos under Postecoglou's wing, with bold ball-playing efforts at the front and centre of the squad's style. Despite all this, Tottenham have collected only four points from nine available.

It's clear that the bar needs to be raised in regard to clinical shooting, and while big bucks were spent on landing a shiny new striker during the summer months, there's one existing centre-forward who's not hitting the mark.

Why Spurs signed Richarlison

The man in question is Richarlison. Tottenham signed the dynamic Brazilian forward from Everton for £60m in July 2022, confident that they had purchased one of the most menacing forwards competing in English football.

Tottenham forward Richarlison

His debut campaign was a miserable thing. Tottenham ebbed and flowed but ultimately languished to an eighth-place Premier League finish following the acrimonious departure of Antonio Conte, and the star attacking signing hardly helped matters, scoring one goal across 27 Premier League matches – and that goal came during a sickening late defeat at Anfield.

Last year, he improved, enjoying a brilliant purple patch throughout the winter months that saw him post nine goals from just eight matches in the Premier League, though he then blanked for seven fixtures before scoring in a loss against Liverpool in April, his last appearance that season as he picked up an injury.

Throughout the summer, despite the upturn in fortunes, there was plenty of rumour surrounding the 27-year-old, with GIVEMESPORT even revealing that the north London side were keen on offloading their struggling forward, with Saudi Pro League outfits sniffing around, exploring a deal.

Why Spurs should've sold Richarlison

Once hailed as "relentless" by journalist Joe Strange, Richarlison improved last year but it would be hard to claim that he's lived up to the price tag. Of course, the fee paid for his services lay out of his hands but there is still the point of the Brazilian's overall level under Postecoglou, and whether he's likely to earn a regular starting berth this year.

Dominic Solanke leapt over Tanguy Ndombele to become Tottenham's club-record signing this summer, joining from Bournemouth for a reported £65m, and though he's missed the past few weeks after picking up an injury following his debut, the 27-year-old is the new out-and-out striker.

Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke

In his absence, Heung-min Son has reprised his finest displays of the 2023/24 campaign by lingering up top, and while he was subdued at St. James' Park, a two-goal performance against Everton proved his high-class finishing once again.

Richarlison missed out against Newcastle due to injury but he's already stirred the pot of detractors this term after missing an excellent chance off the bench on the opening day. It was an opportunity that, if taken, would have handed Postecoglou the dream start.

You could even make the case for selling Richarlison and bringing another striker in, as well as Solanke. Jonathan David was linked with a move away from Lille (for the fourth year running, it seems), with Tottenham among the suitors.

LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David

Football Insider reported in July that Spurs were closing in on the Canadian, who has now entered the final year of his contract and whom Lille's president said could leave the club with negotiations at a standstill.

He'd been transfer-listed for a cut-price £20m fee, and so it's difficult to see why he wasn't purchased by one party or another, especially as he's scored three goals and assisted two more across seven outings so far this season.

David is a sharp goalscorer and an able creator; his playmaking skills are improving year on year. But moreover, he's crisp and intelligent, with link-up play that would see him dovetail into Postecoglou's system, ranking among the top 4% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion (81.4%), as per FBref.

This would have been an excellent way to deepen the dynamism within Spurs' attacking outfit, with the Londoners boasting plenty of pace and electricity down the flanks but not so much at no. 9.

Brennan Johnson for Tottenham

The Athletic's Charlie Eccleshare commented that Tottenham had "missed his physical presence" toward the backend of last season, and perhaps they did. However, Solanke is the perfect focal frontman, remarkably winning eight of his ten contested duels against Leicester on the opening day of the term, as per Sofascore.

From a financial standpoint, Richarlison's reduced role does not align with his pay packet either. According to Capology, he earns £90k per week, which is below several of the most prominent figures down N17 but does stretch well beyond the earnings of players such as Yves Bissouma (£55k per week) and Micky van de Ven (£50k per week).

Micky van de Ven for Tottenham

Bissouma has not enjoyed plain sailing at Tottenham either but he is the toughest-tackling and most effective holding midfielder at the club. When at his best, he purrs, keeping the engine room together.

And Van de Ven… well, what is there to say? Signed from Wolfsburg for £43m last summer, the athletic centre-back is breathtaking, offering a unique take on the defensive game that could yet see him establish himself as one of Europe's foremost stars in the backline.

Had Saudi Arabian clubs received more of an indication that Richarlison could have been on the move, Spurs might just have succeeded in offloading the South American, and given that he earns quite the pretty penny and a suitable replacement in David was available, this could prove to be a missed opportunity for chairman Daniel Levy to have progressed the club further.

Poch sold Spurs flop for £4.5m in 2019, now he's outscoring Richarlison

He was electric last season.

Sam Evans takes his chance with gritty first ton for Leicestershire

Evans adds 130 for first wicket with Hassan Azad on weather-affected day at Surrey

Leicestershire 215 for 3 (Evans 100*, Azad 55) vs SurreySam Evans gritted out the entirety of an overcast first day at The Oval to compile his first Leicestershire hundred, blunting Surrey’s short-ball barrage amid regular stoppages for light rain and bad light. After winning the toss and choosing to bat on a flat pitch, Leicestershire fought hard throughout. They had no intentions of dominating Surrey, instead digging in for long periods and flicking the seamers off their pads when they strayed too straight, or cutting them away when they dropped short.Evans added 130 for the first wicket with Hassan Azad, his opening partner for two seasons at Loughborough MCCU and regularly in the club’s second team, and their determined stand was broken only by a miscued hook shot, which saw Azad caught on the long-leg boundary. Jordan Clark struck twice in an elongated final session, having Harry Dearden caught behind down the leg side for his 100th first-class wicket and trapping Colin Ackermann lbw, but Evans pressed on and reached his ton 15 minutes before the close, pinching a single to point off Amar Virdi to loud celebrations from his team-mates in the stands.Evans is Leicester born and bred, and has had to wait his turn for a chance in the county’s first team. After a handful of appearances while still studying for his geography degree, Evans started the abbreviated 2020 summer running the drinks, as Leicestershire brought Ben Slater in on loan for the first two games of the Bob Willis Trophy. Slater was recalled by Nottinghamshire, giving Evans an opportunity, but after his 85 against Durham, a couple of low scores in the final two games meant he was not guaranteed a spot at the start of this season. After scores of 3 and 8 against Hampshire in the season opener, this was Evans’ final chance to stake his claim for retention in the side ahead of Marcus Harris’ debut, which is pencilled in for the fixture against Somerset next week. It was not a chanceless innings – he was dropped at slip by Rory Burns on 42, took a glancing blow on the helmet from a Jamie Overton bouncer on 90 and survived a tight run-out chance in the final half-hour – but he scored heavily through cover-point, punching compactly off the back foot as Surrey targeted him with short stuff.Hassan Azad and Sam Evans added 130 for the first wicket•Getty Images

It was not always easy on the eye: Evans scored a solitary single in the ‘V’ down the ground, instead racking up nine boundaries between cover-point and third man and three more off his pads. Crucially, he was stubborn. The majority of Leicestershire’s batsmen – including the lower order – made starts in at least one innings in their heavy defeat last week, but Lewis Hill’s second-innings 65 was their highest score of the match. In batting for the whole day, Evans has laid the foundation on which they can build a substantial total tomorrow.”He’s got exceptional hands and we’ve always known his ability,” Azad said. “He loves batting. He’s a great guy to bat with because he’s so relaxed, and he’s a Leicester boy, through and through. He’ll be over the moon and I’m sure this is the first of many for him.”I think we’re quite different: Sam likes getting on the front foot and playing through the covers whereas I score more on the leg side and on the back foot. We know Marcus Harris’ quality, and we know that there’s competition for places. There’s always pressure, and that’s a good thing, but it does mean this game probably has a little bit more on it for opening batsmen.”

While he will be disappointed to have been dismissed taking on the short ball, this was a significant innings for Azad, too. Following a breakout 2019 summer, in which he pipped Marnus Labuschagne to top spot in the Division Two run charts, Azad struggled for rhythm in the Bob Willis Trophy, managing only 144 runs in his eight innings. Where his patience had once seemed to be his greatest virtue, it instead seemed as though it was holding him back as he soaked up balls without managing to press on.Azad is a naturally reserved man who would not have enjoyed the limelight last week when controversially dismissed by Lewis McManus’ stumping-that-wasn’t. He survived a probing new-ball examination from Kemar Roach, playing the first of his six Championship matches for the club, and tried to avoid getting bogged down by Virdi, using his feet and playing a deft paddle-scoop for four. For Surrey, this was another long day in the dirt after a confidence-denting defeat in Bristol last week. The early evidence is that this is an excellent batting pitch, and their top five have nearly 50,000 first-class career runs between them, but a home fixture against a Division Two county is the sort of game they will feel that they should be winning if they are to finish in the top two of the group.

35 caps for England: Ipswich could sign "superb" star who’d be like Morsy

Ipswich Town are gearing up for the new Premier League season starting this coming weekend, as Arne Slot's Liverpool travel to Suffolk to take on Kieran McKenna's underdogs at Saturday lunchtime.

The early fixture list hasn't exactly been the kindest for the newly promoted side, with a daunting trip to Manchester City following this mammoth home tie with the Reds.

McKenna could have his work cut out early on this season trying to steer his side to wins, therefore, but he could well be helped by the arrival of this experienced Premier League performer if an ambitious move gets over the line.

Ipswich eye up with ambitious late swoop

Last week, journalist Joe Krishnan reported on social media that Ipswich are weighing up the possibility of a move for former Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer.

This dream deal would be a loan one if the wheels were to accelerate into motion, but the wages could be a potential stumbling block according to Krishnan.

alex-oxlade-chamberlain-liverpool-arsenal-transfer-profit

The 30-year-old would welcome a return to English shores and specifically the Premier League, however, with Ipswich in the driver's seat potentially over a switch, regardless of wage concerns, as Sheffield United are also noted as being an interested party from the division below.

What Oxlade-Chamberlain could offer Ipswich

Although there is nothing concrete yet in terms of a deal being ironed out, McKenna might well view this as a last-ditch loan move that could significantly boost his team ahead of the gigantic step-up in quality, with Oxlade-Chamberlain drafted in to perform a similar role for the Tractor Boys that Sam Morsy currently does; a steady and seasoned head in the centre of the park.

Although the ex-Reds man won't look back on his spell in Turkey with a lot of fondness attached, the new Ipswich target did shine in patches for Beskitas to show there's still plenty of energy left in his tank to help in a basement battle in the Premier League, with four goals and one assist registered from 30 overall contests.

Away from his time with Beskitas, however, Ipswich will be clamouring to get Oxlade-Chamberlain through the door owing to his Premier League experience, with 235 games tallied up at the elite level for both Liverpool and Arsenal.

His addition to the ranks could be crucial, therefore, with the current Ipswich squad largely starved of such experience, as none of the other central midfield options have ever tasted top-flight football before.

That doesn't mean to say that the likes of Morsy won't be able to battle it out and compete up a league, however, with the Tractor Boys captain notching up ridiculous EFL numbers at 188 career clashes in the Championship.

McKenna will hope that the loan addition of the steady 30-year-old will be the correct move to make, therefore, as he has also shown he can excel when at the top of his game in the elite division.

All the way back in the 2017/18 campaign, Oxlade-Chamberlain fired in three goals and registered seven assists from 35 Premier League outings, with Ipswich now praying he can turn back the clock and be as influential for McKenna's men at the foot of the table.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was even described as being "superb" during his previous top-flight days by football journalist Raj Chohan before he left Anfield for good just last year.

Liverpool's former midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Whilst the 5 foot 11 loanee steadily goes about his game, Morsy will be expected to be the more gritty one of the knowledgeable duo for McKenna's men, with 5.2 duels won on average last campaign on the way to promotion being sealed.

The former 35-cap England international is no slouch in that department either, winning 2.1 duels per match last season and 3.4 per game in that aforementioned 17/18 term.

This could be a fascinating pairing to keep tabs on if a move does take place, as Ipswich attempt to keep their heads above water in the Premier League, after staggering back-to-back promotions.

Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic, who spent his formative years in Real’s famed basketball academy, believes that Mbappe and Los Blancos will find a solution that benefits all parties. He told : “I follow Real Madrid every time. I grew up there. They taught me everything, so it’s a part of my life. You can call it a secondary home. I learned a lot of stuff there and, especially, they gave me a way to be here right now (in Dallas). I always appreciate that 100%.”

He added: “Obviously (their season) could be better. But you know, when you get a guy like Mbappe, it takes some time to get used to it, but, we’ll figure it out.”

Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final ends in a tie after blistering Hasan Ali century

Central Punjab had slipped to 249 for 8 in chase of 356 before their captain put on a spectacular show

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Jan-2021

No winners or losers in this one•PCB

Hasan Ali nearly sealed a remarkable turnaround in the fortunes of his team Central Punjab – as well as his own – hitting a final-day hundred in a dramatic and first-ever tied final of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.Central Punjab had slipped to 249 for 8 in their chase of 356 against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) before Hasan’s 61-ball unbeaten 106 – his maiden first-class century – pulled them back in one of the most epic domestic finals. It was the perfect ending to a title scrap that both teams did their best to liven up – the last day saw 215 runs scored and eight wickets falling till two teams that had snapped at each other’s heels for five days hugged, shook hands and, possibly, went back wondering where they fell short. One person who should have no such thoughts, though, is Hasan, who almost pulled off the unthinkable for this side. It didn’t happen in the end, but not for lack of effort on his part. Here’s what day five was like: Central Punjab were chasing 356 to win the final; they started the last day at 140 for 2, and were 179 for 5 not too long after, both overnight batsmen gone; then it was 249 for 8; and then Ali, with a best first-class score of 59* before this one, let rip. Ahmed Safi Abdullah played his part with 35 in 23 balls in a ninth-wicket stand of 70 with his captain. But then Waqas Maqsood, the last man, sent a checked shot off offspinner Sajid Khan only as far as Kamran Ghulam at mid-on to spark big celebrations – led by Sajid’s full-throated roars – among the KPK players. They hadn’t won but now they hadn’t lost either. The celebrations were evidence of that.As was the image of Maqsood, on his knees, till Hasan went up to him, tapped him on his head, and the pair walked back together, dejected but proud.Usman Salahuddin and Mohammad Saad had started proceedings for Central Punjab on the final day, on 51 and 27 respectively. Saad was back in the dressing room within four balls, though, Arshad Iqbal’s medium pace trapping him lbw for his overnight score. Saad Nasim, who came into the match on the back of innings of 136*, 72 and 55, couldn’t last long, perishing for 5 to Sajid, and KPK were very much on top at that stage. That’s how the balance remained as Salahuddin (67), Qasim Akram (30) and Ali Shan (11) fell, leaving Central Punjab at a precarious 202 for 7. But that’s when things started to turn, and doing most of the changing of the script was Hasan. With No. 9 Bilawal Iqbal, he added 47, Iqbal contributing 7. Then came the stand with Abdullah, which took Central Punjab to 319. No. 10 Abdullah did a decent impression of his captain with five fours and a six in his 23-ball knock. And finally, when it was make or break, Hasan took the lead in that last stand, Maqsood scoring 4 in the 36-run association, during which Hasan went past his century. It was almost enough for Central Punjab, and might have been had Maqsood played out the 118th over with the scores level. But the very hittable delivery, quite in the slot, from Sajid, was too tempting for the last man. He couldn’t get under it enough, though, and Ghulam, whose second-innings century had put KPK in a position of some command, didn’t really need to do much to cling on.Hasan has been an instrumental – and unlikely figure – in Central Punjab’s run this season. His season began with him under an ongoing injury cloud and out of national reckoning. But he eventually returned and took over as captain, after Azhar Ali had led the team through the first four rounds, and he turned the team’s season around. They were at the bottom of the table with just 30 points – three defeats and two draws at that stage – before recording four wins in the last five games under Hasan to storm into the finals. And his own individual contributions were essential – finishing the season with 43 wickets at just 20 (in just nine games), the highest wicket haul for a fast bowler this season. He also averaged nearly 25 with the bat, with two fifties to go alongside his hundred. And then in the final. It was as bold a decision as they come, declaring the first innings at 257 for 9, still 43 in arrears. The logic, as explained later, was that, according to the playing conditions, Central Punjab had a crucial second batting point when they crossed the 250-run mark, which put them level with KPK in the first-innings points tally; in case of a draw, the result will be a tie on the basis of first inning points. To Hasan, then, no point chasing unnecessary runs.It was all nearly enough for Hasan and Central Punjab, but not quite. Fortunately from their point of view, they didn’t fall short.

Alex Carey hopeful of facing full-strength India, but his T20 challenge looms large

Alex Carey hopes to play against a full-strength India team when he leads Australia A at the SCG on Friday in his first first-class match for a year, but in terms of his more immediate prospects it is arguably what comes next in for the Adelaide Strikers in the BBL that carries more weight.Carey has lost his place in Australia’s T20I line-up to Matthew Wade, who came in for the final match of the series against England and retained his position for the series against India, having struggled with the middle-order roles he has been given at international level. With the next T20 World Cup now less than a year away Carey has work to do if he wants to regain a position in the starting XI although his return to the BBL may well highlight one of the biggest challenges: most batsmen what to play in the top four for their BBL sides, but the likely opening in the Australia side is the middle-order finisher which is becoming an increasingly specialist task.Carey’s record in the BBL is impressive – he averages 36.34 with a strike-rate of 129.22 – however 22 of his 35 innings have come opening with just two being below No. 4. For Australia, 14 of his 18 innings have been at No. 5 or lower. In the IPL for Delhi Capitals he made 32 runs in three innings batting at No. 6.”If you are batting in the top four you want to bat as deep as possible and get that experience at the back end of the innings anyway, but it’s hard for a player to go back to their franchise and bat six or seven,” Carey said. “Sometimes you don’t even get an opportunity to bat in T20 at that six or seven spot so you do need your best players facing as many balls as possible in the Big Bash.”Then whatever opportunity does come up for Australia you trust the players have got the skills to bat at six or seven, finish an innings. We’ve seen here in Australia that the top-order batters are so good that it’s hard to get a spot up there at the moment. The challenge is to get that balance between batting top four and then coming back and facing a handful of balls at the end.”Despite losing his place in the Australia team, Carey is not going to treat this season’s BBL any differently. “I feel like my batting is going really with the opportunities I’ve had in the ODI team in the middle order. Going back to the Strikers I’m really keen and excited to just play some T20 cricket. Of course it will be important, but every game of cricket I play is important as well.”Before heading the BBL hub, Carey has three days against the Indians in the day-night match which will act as their final preparation for the first Test and an important few days for some of Australia’s Test squad, particularly Joe Burns and Cameron Green. The former is struggling for runs but still likely to play the first Test, the latter is in terrific form but seems unlikely to get a debut just yet.”If we mention the bloke in form in Cameron Green, the way he’s playing is really exciting to see him up close,” Carey said. “We’ve also got lots of players vying for Test selection so we’ll be going full bore. Excited to see some of the young quicks and [Mitchell] Swepson’s form in the lead-up has been unbelievable as well.”Joe’s really experienced, we know how good a player he is and no doubt he’ll be working really hard tomorrow to score some runs. Fully trust the way he goes about it, he’s a proven opening batsman over a long time. Joe’s in great spirits…in the nets he’s hitting the ball really well so there’s a big score just around the corner. Seeing him and [Marcus Harris] line-up at the top against a really strong Indian team will be a really great opportunity for both of them.”We are hoping India put their best line-up out there. It’s a great opportunity for us to play against a high-quality Test team.”

Romano – £50,000-per-week Chelsea starlet seen as "important" for Maresca

Fabrizio Romano says a young Chelsea player is seen as "important" by Enzo Maresca's side, as their new head coach decides on his best team for next season behind the scenes.

Maresca's plans at Chelsea take effect ahead of next season

The Italian is preparing for his first full campaign in charge of Chelsea after Stamford Bridge chiefs decided that he was their best option to replace the departed Mauricio Pochettino.

Maresca guided Leicester City to the Championship title and automatic promotion in his first campaign away from Man City's backroom, and the Foxes performances helped to alert Chelsea to their ideal Pochettino replacement.

Chelsea's squad are said to be excited by what Maresca will bring to Stamford Bridge, and the club believe they've landed an "incredible" new head coach.

“Although it’s true several players were disappointed to see Mauricio Pochettino leave, there is already excitement at what Maresca can bring," said journalist Ben Jacobs to CaughtOffside recently.

“Chelsea’s players believe momentum is on their side and Maresca’s favoured 4-3-3 should favour the squad he inherits. Sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley led the process replace Pochettino, whilst co-owner Behdad Eghbali was in London and heavily involved.

“Chelsea feel they have got an incredible manager. The ownership have always looked to the early days of Mikel Arteta, and the patience shown to him, and have even watched Amazon’s ‘All of Nothing’ documentary.

“Chelsea’s leadership team want to be patient, despite Maresca being their fourth permanent manager. The belief is Maresca is the perfect profile: young, progressive, possession based and, of course, a Pep disciple.”

Maresca is believed to have plans for a few of his players already. Indeed, it's been claimed that Cole Palmer could be the focal point of Chelsea's side next season, and Maresca is said to be a real admirer of goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

Andrey Santos could also be set for a first-team role at Chelsea in Maresca's debut campaign, and an update has now emerged on how Noni Madueke is viewed in west London.

Madueke seen as "important player for Chelsea"

The £50,000-per-week winger has been linked with a move to Juventus and mentioned as a possible makeweight in Chelsea talks to sign Michael Olise from Crystal Palace.

Noni Madueke and Nicolas Jackson

However, Romano has told CaughtOffside that Madueke is seen as an "important" player at Chelsea – suggesting Maresca has plans for the 22-year-old after all.

“I’m also aware of a Chelsea rumour involving Noni Madueke and Juventus, but I have no updates on this at the moment," said Romano.

“Madueke is an important player for Chelsea, so there is really nothing concrete on his future so far. We will see if something changes in the next weeks, but for now Juventus are also focused on the Douglas Luiz swap deal with Aston Villa.”

The Cottagers opened the scoring in the 26th minute, but 32nd and 47th-minute strikes from Mateo Kovacic handed City an advantage, with winger Jeremy Doku finishing the match off with a third in the 82nd minute. Fulham did get a late goal back in the 89th minute through Rodrigo Muniz, but it was too little too late.

Robinson played all 90 minutes, while Mexico international Raul Jimenez recorded a sublime assist in their opening goal. The striker lifted a delicious backheel flick over the defense, with midfielder Andreas Pereira smashing it home.

The Cottagers' unbeaten streak of seven-straight matches across all competitions without a loss was snapped, while City continued their unbeaten start to the season.

Robinson struggled mightily against their attack, losing nine duels during the contest – the most of any player on the pitch. He completed 24 of 28 pass attempts, while creating one attacking chance as well.

On the attack he completed just two of nine cross attempts, and was dispossessed twice during the contest. Defensively, he didn't win a single of his three tackles, but recorded two important headed clearances.
