Arsenal: Arteta hit the jackpot on £115k-p/w "wizard"

For years and years, Arsenal toiled and foundered, failing to match the ambitions of a proud and prestigious fanbase with the performances on the pitch, but all that changed upon Mikel Arteta's appointment in December 2019.

The Spaniard replaced his countryman, Unai Emery, who had failed to prove his worth as the man to succeed the legendary Arsene Wenger, who retired in 2018, and started on the front foot with a record-extending triumph in the FA Cup, defeating Chelsea in the final courtesy of a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang double.

It would take Arteta three-and-a-half years to provide Arsenal with a return to the Champions League, having last played in the prestigious continental competition in the 2016/17 season, but his burgeoning outfit roared into life last year and led Manchester City in an enthralling title race before falling by the wayside at the business end.

Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli on the wings, William Saliba's prodigious defensive talents at the back; Arsenal boast one of the most exciting teams in Europe and will hope to glean silverware this season, perhaps even toppling the indomitable force that is Pep Guardiola's City.

The life force of this Gunners team, the fulcrum of all that flows through the Emirates Stadium, is captain Martin Odegaard, boy wonder turned first-class phenom, who now comfortably stands as one of the most influential, ingenious attacking midfielders in the game.

When did Arsenal sign Martin Odegaard?

In January 2021, Arsenal swooped for Real Madrid's Norwegian midfielder and secured his services on a six-month loan deal, with Los Blancos granting a move for a player requiring regular action on the pitch.

Odegaard had been a notable name from his formative years, signing for Real as a 16-year-old after catching the eye with his precocious performances in his homeland, joining for a reported €3m (£2.3m).

martin-odegaard-transfer-gossip-tottenham-hotspur-postecoglou-jeremy-doku

Praised as "talented" by Arteta during that loan stint, the Norway captain impressed, scoring a goal and providing two assists in the Premier League, completing 91% of his passes, averaging 1.4 key passes per game and succeeding with 76% of his dribble attempts.

His showings prompted the London giants to complete a £30m transfer for his permanent signature at the end of the term, and while there were concerns over a player who had failed to reach his potential and cement a spot at the Santiago Bernabeu, he has now blossomed into a world-class talent.

How much is Martin Odegaard worth now?

Arteta proclaimed that his maestro would become "one of the best" midfielders in the world before he had even finished his loan spell, something that has been proved right and then some with Odegaard now the centrepiece of Arsenal's rise to the upper echelon of teams across Europe.

While the £30m fee appeared to be something of a gamble for a player of immense talent but uncertainty that he would actually live up to the potential he had been tagged with since a youth, it's clear that if Arsenal were to cash in now, they would eclipse that initial sum paid.

Indeed, according to CIES Football Observatory's valuation model, Odegaard is currently valued at €100m (£86m), a 187% increase on the initial fee, with Football Transfers also listing only Neymar Jr. and Pedri as more valuable playmakers.

Of course, it's hardly likely such a price tag would dissuade the Emirates hierarchy from pulling all the stops to tie the ace down to a long-term future at the club.

And indeed, with Arsenal reportedly engaged in contract negotiations with their Scandinavian star for a new contract, and a deal expected to be close, there's little doubt that this captain will stay with the ship.

Why is Martin Odegaard worth that much?

Last season, Arsenal returned to the forefront of the English game, with the components dovetailing to great effect and the squad unearthing that winning formula that provides an almost magical advantage to the very greatest sides, capable of finding a way to win in the most forgone conclusions.

Heralded as a "wizard" by footballer Babayele Sodade for his part in Arsenal's feats, Odegaard is press-resistant and unflappable, creative and composed; his expansive array of tools can unlock any defence, and he resides alongside Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne as the Premier League's foremost midfield sensation.

The £115k-per-week machine was incredible last year, scoring 15 goals and supplying eight assists in the league as Arsenal recorded their highest points total since winning the Premier League in 2004, with Wenger's historic 'invincibles' the only Premier League side to complete a season undefeated to this day.

This season, having clinched the Community Shield against Manchester City in the campaign's curtain-raiser, Odegaard has proved paramount to his side's success yet again, scoring twice from the opening four league matches, praised for his "amazing" qualities by compatriot and prolific City talisman Erling Haaland.

The 53-cap international also ranks among the top 1% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 2% for shot-creating actions, the top 11% for assists, the top 11% for progressive passes and the top 12% for progressive carries per 90, as per FBref.

With De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Luka Modric among the comparable players to the one-time Real Sociedad loanee, it's clear that not only does he boast creativity of the highest standard, but an all-encompassing, multi-functional midfield game to provide Arteta with the perfect central cog to whir his machine into life.

The aforementioned characteristics are exactly what is needed for an ambitious outfit such as Arsenal pushing to reclaim their spot as one of Europe's most fearsome and frightening sides in the business.

Odegaard is now among the standout stars of his ilk, and while the Gunners could cash in for a lucrative sale, the thought of allowing this dynamic, prodigious talent to ply his trade elsewhere is simply unthinkable, and Arteta will forever wax over the day that he was brought to the club, catalysing a return to the very top.

Tottenham Could Sign Sandro 2.0 In £31m-rated "Enforcer"

Tottenham Hotspur could be set to bolster their ranks tenfold, with a surefire way to improve the squad and begin investing their huge influx of cash intelligently…

Who are Tottenham Hotspur signing?

Harry Kane's exit has seen Ange Postecoglou's transfer war chest heavily replenished, with the Australian likely to be handed plenty more funds to add to his already improved squad.

James Maddison headlines a group of six brand-new additions, on top of welcoming Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro on permanent deals. However, with a number of other stars that could still depart N17, perhaps a midfield makeover could be in order to supplement the England international.

Adding some steel and creativity just behind him, perhaps reigniting their interest in Douglas Luiz, could be the smart move to secure these qualities in their new-look engine room.

FootballTransfers value the Aston Villa ace at €36.8m (£31m), with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's potential sale likely to offset that fee.

How good is Douglas Luiz?

It is no surprise that the 25-year-old maestro has been so sought-after by some of England's elite, with north London rivals Arsenal seeing three bids rejected last summer.

He is such a malleable character, boasting such a varied skillset, that any club would benefit from his presence due to his adaptability.

If the squad is craving a goalscorer from deep then he can step up, but in the same way that he could also screen a backline with poise and power.

This shows up clearly in the data, which all combined to hand the Brazilian a 7.10 average rating last season in the Premier League.

That was a figure buoyed by his 12 goal contributions and 86% pass accuracy, supplemented by a further 1.2 key passes and two tackles per game, via Sofascore. None of Spurs' central midfielders could match his combined goal efforts or his key passes per game.

It is a testament to his classy all-rounder play style that he has been branded both an "enforcer" and a "wizard" by journalist Ashley Preece.

By bringing in a powerful Brazilian midfielder, there are parallels to be made with their 2010 acquisition of Sandro.

douglas-luiz

Brought in from Internacional, it took some time for the 34-year-old to adapt to English football, eventually endearing himself with the fanbase with his dominant displays in the engine room.

However, once it clicked, he admitted:

"I was destroying it. I scored against Chelsea and stood out in the Champions League. I’m a happy guy, spontaneous. Even without being able to speak English, I joked and laughed with everyone.”

Such was the relationship he shared with the club, he even suggested it was "sensational" and admitted leaving was the "biggest regret" of his career.

Former Lilywhites assistant Joe Jordan recalled another standout performance of his back in 2011, noting:

"Sandro was asked to do an awful lot against AC Milan because of the possession they had. He really showed his worth because we had to defend. He had to put out a few fires, get across the pitch, snuff that player out, get across the pitch again, get another tackle in and that’s his game."

Showcasing such defensive steel combined with that goalscoring talent he mentioned, and there are comparisons to be made between him and Luiz.

Although the latter arguably boasts far more offensive impetus, perhaps he could have a similarly influential effect on Postecoglou's side, leading them to a host of silverware that Sandro could not attain.

Newcastle Leading Race For "Sensational" £30.1m Star

Newcastle United are now leading the race for Galatasaray star Nicolo Zaniolo, who is open to a move to St. James' Park this summer, according to a recent report from Turkish Football.

Who are Newcastle signing this summer?

The Magpies remain keen on strengthening a number of key positions this summer, with Fabian Schar's pre-season injury causing them to turn their attentions to a new centre-back, having already held talks over Joachim Andersen.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano said: "Let’s see what happens with the centre-backs I think as an extra deal. They always had conversations with [Axel] Disasi but then he joined Chelsea, also they spoke multiple times with the agents of Joachim Andersen who is a player they have appreciated for a long time.”

With Eddie Howe keen to improve the spine of his team, Sky Sports reporter Melissa Reddy has claimed that a bid could still be lodged for Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay, but the Red Devils are keen to hold out for £45m.

In terms of wide options, journalist Alan Nixon has now reported that Newcastle could make a move for Estudiantes de la Plata winger Benjamin Rollheiser, who would be keen on a move to St. James' Park this summer.

Another attacking option for the Magpies is Zaniolo, with the Magpies now leading the race for his signature after recent talks, according to a report from Turkish Football.

The Italian, who has a £30m release clause included in his contract, has received an offer from an unnamed club in Saudi Arabia, but he would prefer to stay in Europe, and he is open to a move to St. James' Park.

There are other potential suitors, with Juventus trying to lower the Turkish club's asking price, but they have no intention of letting him leave for below his release clause, leaving Newcastle as the only club still interested who are able to match Galatasaray's valuation.

The report describes the 24-year-old as a "highly rated, talented player", so he could be a major coup for the Magpies.

How good is Nicolo Zaniolo?

Lauded as "sensational" by members of the media, the Italy international has looked very impressive since joining Galatasaray last season, netting five goals in ten Turkish Super Lig games to help them secure the league title.

Although former manager Jose Mourinho froze out the attacking midfielder prior to his departure from AS Roma, he was full of praise for his performance against Sampdoria less than a year ago, saying:

“I knew that Zaniolo was going to be devastating in the last 20-30 minutes, he just missed the goal tonight which would have been the cherry on top of a great performance.

“I was delighted with Zaniolo tonight. Physically he was devastating and difficult for Samp to stop. Nicolò is always tough to handle for the opponent.

That said, the former Roma man has underperformed on some key metrics over the past year, averaging just 0.16 non-penalty goals per 90, despite his expected total standing at 0.37, meaning he has scored less than half the amount he should have based on the quality of his chances.

At 24-years-old, Zaniolo is at a good age to be a long-term success at Newcastle, and £30.1m could end up being a fair fee, but he will need to become more clinical if he is to be a consistent first-team player.

Hibernian Edge Closer To Signing £700k Machine

Hibernian suffered the indignity of losing to Andorran side Inter Club d'Escaldes during the second qualifying round of the Europa Conference League, and although they have the home leg to come, manager Lee Johnson needs something to click.

The Easter Road outfit sold Kevin Nisbet to Millwall, and despite adding Adam Le Fondre and Elie Youan to his attacking options, they need another striker.

Will Hibs sign Dylan Vente?

According to reports in The Netherlands (via The Edinburgh Evening News), Hibs are close to securing a move for Roda JC striker Dylan Vente in the coming days.

There was interest from Championship sides Sunderland and Swansea City, while Italian outfits Palermo and Pisa were also keeping tabs on the Dutchman, yet it appears he is set to move to the capital.

By securing £2m from the sale of Nisbet, Johnson is expected to splash £700k of that on Vente according to the Dutch media (via The Edinburgh Evening News) and there is no doubt that another forward is desperately required, especially with the Premiership season less than a week away.

Could Dylan Vente replace Kevin Nisbet at Hibs?

The departure of the former Raith Rovers striker was inevitable, especially considering his success at the club over the previous few seasons.

Since arriving from Dunfermline Athletic in 2020 having netted 18 goals in the second tier, Nisbet took to the Premiership like a duck to water, settling in with ease.

Across 101 matches for Hibs, he scored 39 goals and grabbed 12 assists, and this meant he scored or assisted once every two games for the club.

Kevin Nisbet

There is no doubt he will be missed, but if Johnson wishes to improve on the fifth-place finish from last term, he will have to bring someone in who could match Nisbet’s clinical nature. Vente may be the ideal candidate.

The 24-year-old has played in his homeland for his entire career, representing clubs such as Feyenoord, RKC Waalwijk and now Roda, even winning a Dutch Cup and two Super Cup medals during his time in Rotterdam.

His spell at Roda has been the most productive of his career thus far, scoring an impressive 51 goals in just 96 matches, and he shone during the 2022/23 campaign.

Although he was playing in the Dutch second tier, Vente ranked third across the squad for overall Sofascore match rating (7.29), while also finishing top of the pile for goals and assists (27), shots on target per game (1.5) and second for goal frequency (a goal every 160 minutes), suggesting that he was a key attacking outlet for the side.

His figures were so impressive that he would have ranked as Hibs’ joint-best performer alongside Joe Newell while ranking first for goals and assists, shots on target per game and second for scoring frequency, indicating that he would significantly improve the attacking options at the club.

With Johnson needing a win in their upcoming European second-leg encounter, plus a decent start in the league, the former Sunderland boss will be hoping the move for Vente goes through ahead of schedule to help ease the loss of Nisbet.

Newcastle: Transfer insider hints at "top shelf" transfer

Newcastle United could still sign a new centre-back from the "top shelf" this summer but are considering someone "a bit cheaper" as well, claims transfer insider Dean Jones.

Newcastle United transfer news – What's the latest on the search for a new centreback?

It has been a strong start to the summer for the world's richest football club, with the Magpies signing AC Milan's talismanic young midfielder Sandro Tonali for a cool £55m this week.

The deal is the Toon's first signing of the window and will see the Italian international play his football at St James Park until 2028.

Sandro Tonali

As brilliant a signing Tonali is, Newcastle haven't had everything go their way in the window thus far, with long-term target James Maddison opting to join Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur instead.

The disappointment over that saga, however, hasn't seemed to impact the club's transfer ambitions, as they now look to shift focus and search for defensive reinforcements in the shape of a new centre-back.

One of the names that have been touted for a move up north is Crystal Palace captain and full England international Marc Guéhi.

According to Football Insider, Eddie Howe is 'keen' on a move for the 22-year-old defender; however, to have even a remote chance of landing the former Chelsea man, the Toon would have to fork out around £60m.

marc-guehi-newcastle-united-transfer-gossip-ashworth-howe-varane

Whilst that is ultimately a drop in the ocean for the Magpies' generous benefactors, they still have to be cognizant of the implications on FFP and the Premier League's own rules around profit and loss, leading to some in the club to instead prefer a "cheaper option", per Dean Jones.

What has transfer insider Dean Jones said about Newcastle's search for a centre-back?

Jones was clear that whilst there is an option for the club to go and spend big on a new defender, that option is being counterbalanced by the desire to be sensible.

Speaking to Football FanCast, he said: "There's still a chance they go and get one from the top shelf. That's tempered by the sensible option, which is to find someone a bit cheaper with big potential or an expiring contract, someone they can get good value from. So that's the scenario they're stuck in right now as they search for their centre-back".

Would Marc Guéhi be a good signing for Newcastle United?

While Howe managed to transform his team into the league's joint-best defensive side last season, a player of Guéhi's quality would undoubtedly propel the side further forward.

According to WhoScored, the "monster" centre-back achieved an average rating of 6.68 across his 37 Premier League appearances last season and maintained an impressive pass success rate of 85.5%.

Marc-Guehi

It hasn't been a sudden rise for the youngster either, with football scout Jacek Kulig highlighting the 6 foot titan back in March of last year, describing him as "One of the best and most mature U-21 centre-backs in World football."

Considering he has played for a relatively limited team in Palace, his statistics still look impressive, with him putting in 1.2 interceptions, 1.4 tackles, and 3.6 clearances all per game via Sofascore.

With the young international passing the eye test with flying colours, possessing leadership qualities and showing a lot of promise for the future, Newcastle should certainly consider spending more to land Guéhi before someone else does.

Chelsea Plan Suprising "Idea" With 28-y/o Amidst Rumours

Chelsea will stick with Kepa Arrizabalaga as their first-choice goalkeeping option, despite rumours linking them with other top goalkeepers, Fabrizio Romano has claimed.

What are Chelsea's current goalkeeping options?

Following Edouard Mendy's move to Saudi Arabia, Chelsea only have Kepa and Marcus Bettinelli as senior options, as well as young talent Gabriel Slonina, who was signed last year.

And there had been suggestions the Blues were open to selling both players this summer.

There have been links with the likes of Andre Onana and Mike Maignan as first choice options to replace Kepa, but it now seems that new manager Mauricio Pochettino will continue with the Spaniard as his number one.

The 28-year-old has received criticism at times during his Chelsea career, and even lost his place to Mendy under Thomas Tuchel before regaining it under Graham Potter.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano revealed that Chelsea do not intend to sign a first-choice option, but do want a new backup to replace Mendy.

"Chelsea, at the moment, have a different idea. Chelsea are seriously considering to have Kepa as first goalkeeper, and to sign a second goalkeeper on the market to replace Edouard Mendy, who can create competition," he stated.

"For example, [Anatoliy] Trubin from Shakhtar is one of the goalkeepers they appreciate, also Inter are considering Trubin as one of the options, in case of course, Andre Onana leaves the club and so keep an eye on the solution, because Chelsea are looking for that kind of goalkeeper.

"A young, talented keeper, already experienced, but ready to create competition with Kepa, who's going to be the first goalkeeper."

Should Chelsea stick with Kepa?

Chelsea are set for another busy summer, and they are actively pursuing a midfielder in Moises Caicedo, whilst they've already brought in a striker.

Given how many changes they have made throughout the squad, having continuity at the back with Kepa may be a wise choice from Pochettino, rather than gambling on a new, and potentially expensive, first choice option.

Kepa Arrizabalaga Chelsea

If they are able to bring in an experienced second choice option, then the Spaniard continuing in goal at the start of the season makes sense for Chelsea. They will need to recover from last season, which saw them finish 12th.

Kepa did impress at times last season, making a number of outstanding saves, but whilst Chelsea's defence was fairly solid, they struggled going forward, scoring just 38 times in 38 league games.

A big goalkeeping investment is a lower priority than other positions, and therefore one Chelsea can afford to wait for.

Whatmore to coach Kerala in 2017-18

Dav Whatmore has signed a six-month deal as head coach of Kerala

Shashank Kishore13-Apr-2017Dav Whatmore has signed a six-month deal as head coach of Kerala. The formal announcement was made by the Kerala Cricket Association in Kochi last week. He will start mid-September and will likely see out the entire 2017-18 domestic season. Apart from coaching the senior team, Whatmore will also be involved in KCA’s junior cricket programmes and work closely with coaches in charge of the Under-23 team.”It’s important to build a system which can then help extend growth within the game across the state. That is what I’m looking forward to doing,” Whatmore told ESPNcricinfo. “That said, it’s also important to bring in results along with development of these young players. It takes time and I’m confident this association will last more than just the six months we’ve agreed upon. But for now this is a good start.”Whatmore, whose coaching stint with Zimbabwe ended in May 2016, is currently based in India. He is on a three-year deal as a consultant with the Chennai-based Sri Ramachandra University, which has collaborated with his cricket academy – Whatmore Centre of Cricket. He will be assisted there by a team of coaches with whom he hopes to streamline talent across age-groups.”I’m focused on the development side of the game, but it so happened that I could combine that along with coaching an upcoming state side, which I found challenging. That explains my association with Kerala,” Whatmore said. “I’ll be working six months with SRU to help set up a system, and it so worked out that the domestic season in India starts only after that.”June to August is not a good time for cricket in Kerala with the monsoons. With this arrangement, we can also have the senior and junior Kerala teams train in Chennai at the SRU facility. That would also allow an opportunity to work not just with Kerala in the pre-season but also complete my initial commitment as far as setting up of a system in Chennai goes.”Kerala had a poor 2016-17 Ranji Trophy campaign in which they managed just one win in nine matches. Halfway through their campaign, the association sacked P Balachandran as head coach, citing “non-performance”, and replaced him with Tinu Yohannan, the former India fast bowler. Their poor form extended across formats – they finished fourth in the South Zone Inter-State T20s and failed to advance to the knockout stage of the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy.”It’s a completely different challenge because I don’t know much about the side, but what I do know is they’ve been struggling to make the step up as far as first-class cricket is concerned. Helping them graduate to the next level is a challenge that excited me,” Whatmore said. “There is plenty of potential within the state. Taking the lead in five out of the eight games says they’re doing something right. If you can do it in the first innings, surely there is potential, but players are getting lost somewhere. That is why the off-season is crucial.”Whatmore has previously coached four international sides, Zimbabwe most recently. He was in charge of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan prior to that. In India, he has been involved with the National Cricket Academy and the Under-19 team apart from coaching Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.

Cartwright ton keeps WA in the match

ESPNcricinfo’s wrap of the third day’s play between Victoria and Western Australia in Alice Springs

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Mar-2017
Scorecard File photo – Hilton Cartwright registered his third first-class century•Getty ImagesHilton Cartwright scored the third first-class hundred of his career, and his first of this Sheffield Shield season, as Western Australia clung on to hope in their match against Victoria in Alice Springs. Having conceded a hefty first-innings deficit, the Warriors went to stumps on day three at 7 for 238 in their second innings, leading by 62 runs, with D’Arcy Short on 7 and Jason Behrendorff on 4.To have even a slim chance of victory, the Western Australia tail will likely need to push that advantage up towards 150, but Cartwright’s hundred and a half-century from Michael Klinger at least kept them in the game. The Warriors began the day on 0 for 29 and quickly lost Cameron Bancroft, who was lbw to James Pattinson, and then Jon Wells, who was caught behind off Daniel Christian.Cartwright and Klinger put on 139 for the fourth wicket, both grinding their way through the innings, before Cartwright was lbw to Pattinson for 101. Although Cartwright was overlooked for a call-up to the Test squad in India as a replacement for the injured Mitchell Marsh, Pattinson could be a chance of being called on after Mitchell Starc was also ruled out due to injury. Pattinson finished the day with 4 for 48.Klinger fell soon after Cartwright for 55 from 172 balls, also lbw to Pattinson, and the loss of Josh Inglis and Ashon Turner late in the day gave Victoria hope of running through the tail.
