Man Utd struck gold by selling academy grad who’s worth less than Maguire

Manchester United have not been able to live up to their standards as one of the biggest clubs in the world over the past decade.

From failing to perform on the field to lacking any real strategy behind the scenes, it’s safe to say that the club as a whole has suffered tremendously in recent years.

Manchester United fans protest against the Glazers at Old Trafford.

Just by taking a look at the signings in recent years, it’s clear that there isn’t a clear idea of progression, with high-value deals turning out to be failures.

That said, it isn’t often that United actually make the correct decision to sell a player, unlike one individual whose value has significantly dropped since the summer, to the point where they’re worth three times less than Harry Maguire.

Harry Maguire’s transfer value in 2024

In 2019, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in search of a centre-back to build his Man United team around, and at the top of his list was Maguire.

The 6 foot 4 rock switched Leicester City for United in an £80m world record deal for a defender, and in his first campaign, he led the side to 13 clean sheets in 38 Premier League games.

harry-maguire-newcastle-united-transfer-premier-league

However, fast forward to today, and the former United captain’s value has plummeted to just £13m according to CIES’ Football Observatory, due to injuries and a lack of consistency on the field.

It marks rather poor business from a United point of view, but it's not all been doom and gloom on the transfer front with one recent departee now actually worth less than Maguire.

Dean Henderson’s transfer value after leaving Man Utd

Academy graduate Dean Henderson spent 12 years at Man United, yet despite impressing on loan at Sheffield United in particular, he was never trusted enough to fill the shoes of first-choice David de Gea.

The 27-year-old made just 29 appearances for the Red Devils over his career in the first-team setup, with more than half of them coming in cup competitions.

But in the summer, he eventually left the club in search of minutes, with Crystal Palace set to be the perfect destination to cement himself as a first-choice Premier League shot-stopper.

However, that unfortunately hasn’t been the case after his £20m move, with a hamstring injury making him miss ten games between September and December.

As you can see, this has caused his value to decrease significantly, to the point where he is worth three times less than Maguire's £13m. Indeed, he would now be among the lowest-valued first-team players in the United squad.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem as though things will be looking up for Henderson either, with new boss Oliver Glasner opting for Sam Johnstone as his number one, which has seen the "shaky" goalkeeper, as dubbed by journalist Josh Bunting, sit on the bench in the last four games.

Therefore, it’s clear that making £20m profit on Henderson was a masterstroke from United, which enabled them to complete a goalkeeper department overhaul themselves in the summer.

'Beginning of something special' – India v Bangladesh Test at Eden Gardens to be day-night affair

The BCB has agreed to the BCCI’s request for the second Test between India and Bangladesh to be a day-night fixture at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.”I’m pleased to announce that our long-term partner BCB has graciously agreed to play a day-night Test match,” BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, who has spoken about day-night affairs as “a way forward” when it comes to bringing people to the stadiums to watch Test cricket, said in a statement released by the BCCI. “This is the beginning of something special in Indian cricket. It is a priority for the newly elected Office Bearers and members of Apex Council to take Indian cricket forward.”For me, as former captain of India and as the current president of BCCI, Test cricket is of utmost priority and we at BCCI will leave no stone unturned to bring this format back to its feet. In this effort of ours, day-night Test cricket is a huge step forward and we believe it will bring back the crowd into stadiums and a whole lot of young children to the sport. I am extremely honoured that the Eden Gardens will host the inaugural day-night Test match and the Cricket Association of Bengal will create a spectacle for everyone to watch.”The development comes less than a week after Ganguly took charge of the BCCI, and the BCB, despite the Bangladesh cricketers having played almost no day-night multi-day cricket – true of the Indians too – played ball.”I thank the Bangladesh Cricket Board President Mr. Nazmul Hassan and his team for accepting our request on such a short notice. I also thank India captain Mr. Virat Kohli for his co-operation,” Ganguly said.ALSO READ – Red ball, not pink – BCCI, domestic cricketers make their preference knownHassan acknowledged the “very long history of support, co-operation and friendship” between the two boards, saying in the same statement, “Ours is a bond of strength and it is very heartening and reassuring for the BCB to have someone like Mr Ganguly as BCCI President who has been an integral part of this journey.”Sourav Ganguly chats with Virat Kohli at an event in Kolkata in 2018•Getty Images

Bangladesh’s decision to go ahead with the pink-ball Test came after discussions between the board and the players.”I am pleased that we have had a frank and constructive discussion with the players and the team management. I have received a positive response about playing the day-night Test in view of the BCB-BCCI relationship,” Hassan said. That the Bangladesh team would play the Kolkata Test as a day-night contest had actually become clear when head coach Russell Domingo addressed a press conference in Mirpur on Tuesday, the same day their Test and T20I captain Shakib Al Hasan was banned by the ICC for two years (one year suspended) for not reporting bookie approaches to the concerned authorities.”As a coach and some players and all the other senior players, we think it’s a great opportunity and I don’t think India have played a pink-ball Test before,” Domingo said. “We haven’t played a pink-ball Test and it’s a great occasion at Eden Gardens and it will be a new experience for both teams. So, we’re excited and it’s going to be a great occasion under lights at Kolkata against probably the best team in the world.”We’re really looking forward to the challenge. We’re not going to have a lot of time to prepare with the pink ball but it’s the same for India.”One of the major concerns for Bangladesh was their lack of match practice with the pink balls that are used in day-night Tests – only one match has been played in the country with them, the first-class Bangladesh Cricket League final in February 2013.Coach Russell Domingo speaks to some of the players during a training session•BCB

While Domingo acknowledged those concerns, he reckoned the “uncertainty” surrounding the pink-ball Test might tilt the scales in Bangladesh’s favour.”We know India are a good Test team, they’re the No. 1 Test team in the world, but the uncertainty of playing a pink-ball Test – both teams don’t quite know what to expect – could work in our advantage,” he said. “The way the game’s going, we need to try new things at certain times and we’re excited by it.”I’ve spoken to the players and for sure there have been some concerns and some guys have said: ‘Oh! We don’t know, two [four] days between the first and second Test’.”Domingo, though, has been part of a day-night Test before, in 2016, when he was the coach of the South Africa team that faced Australia at Adelaide Oval. Domingo hoped that experience would assist him in Kolkata.”In my time at South Africa, we played a pink-ball Test in Adelaide, but we had a warm-up game before that and we had a few sessions with the pink ball leading into the Test match,” Domingo recalled. “I have some experience when it has happened with the pink ball, so hopefully we can share the information and that’s the advantage for us.”Shakib’s ban is a massive blow to a side that is already depleted by the absence of Tamim Iqbal, who has pulled out of the entire tour of India as his wife is expecting their second child later this month.India and Bangladesh are the only Full Members apart from Afghanistan and Ireland to have not played a day-night Test yet.The Eden Gardens Test is scheduled to begin on November 22, with the series of three T20Is (Delhi – November 3, Rajkot – November 7, and Nagpur – November 10) and the first Test, in Indore from November 14, preceding it.

Gordon has been linked with a move away from St. James' Park this summer as Newcastle United are being reportedly forced to sell the youngster to comply with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability rules. The Telegraph reported last week that Liverpool were willing to buy the player and that he too was flattered by the English giants' interest.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Now former Everton scout Ian Duke, who watched the 23-year-old grow as a player from close quarters during his time at Goodison Park, has backed the England international to be successful if he decides to move to Anfield ahead of the 2024/25 season.

  • WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Speaking to the Echo, Duke said, "Especially being a Liverpool fan, I’d love him to go there and kick the door down. I think he would improve again coming to Liverpool, playing with a batch of better players, confidence but I think he wants it, he’s a Liverpool fan – there’s nothing better than playing for your boyhood team."

Surrey openers set up nine-over total of 132 for 1 to leave Lancashire winless again

Lizelle Lee and Nat Sciver smashed stunning half-centuries to fire Surrey Stars to reduced-overs victory over Lancashire Thunder, by 35 runs, as the defending champions ended the Kia Super League in rip-roaring style at Blackpool.Openers Lee and Sciver, the Stars captain, amassed a sensational 127 partnership in just two balls short of the allotted nine overs after rain prevented a start at Stanley Park until 5pm. The Stars, unable to defend their title having only previously won two of their nine games, finished with 131 for 1 before the winless Thunder replied with 97 for 7, of which Australian Tahlia McGrath hit 41 off 19 balls and Hannah Jones took three wickets.South African Lee crashed 75 off only 28 balls with 13 fours and three sixes, while England allrounder Sciver reached 50 off 26 with a boundary of the last ball of the innings from international team-mate Kate Cross. With the Hundred replacing the KSL for next summer, this was both sides’ final game, and it included a combined total of 33 fours and nine sixes.Lee, whose fifty came in only 17 balls in the fifth over, hit 70 of her 75 runs in boundaries, with her strike-rate of 267.85 the highest of the competition so far by some way. Both Lee and fellow right-hander Sciver played strongly all around the innings and hardly mishit a shot. They pulled, cut and hit over the top and down the ground with great authority.Cross, having earlier won the toss, took the only wicket of the innings when she bowled Lee late on in the ninth over, but she conceded 42 in her two overs. The 127 partnership is the second-highest by any pair in this season’s Super League behind the 133 Western Storm openers Rachel Priest and Smriti Mandhana shared in a victory over Yorkshire at York earlier this month.Lancashire’s hopes of finishing on a high were dashed long before the halfway mark in the game. They finish 2019 winless, with nine defeats and a tie and have finished bottom of the table for three seasons out of four.In four years, they have only won six times. Five of those came last year when they narrowly missed out on Finals Day. But McGrath had some fun in the chase, nonetheless. She hit six fours and a huge six, over mid-wicket and out of the ground, in seven balls faced against seamers Eva Gary and Marizanne Kapp, taking the Thunder to 38 without loss after three overs. But she fell to off-spinner Bryony Smith, who struck twice in the fifth over to remove McGrath and fellow opener Eve Jones caught at long-off.Another offspinner Jones then struck three in the seventh over to get Sune Luus caught at long-on by Lee – her second catch – and Indian Harmanpreet Kaur and Cross stumped, leaving the score at 71 for 6. Gray and Grace Gibbs also struck.

Callum Wilson new injury doubt in Newcastle team news vs Bournemouth

A "hugely important" Newcastle United player could now miss his side's Premier League clash with Bournemouth this weekend, according to an update from reliable journalist Craig Hope.

Newcastle injury news

The Magpies' entire season has been defined by an endless string of injuries to key players, and it can be used as a genuine excuse for what has been an underwhelming campaign overall, despite some good form recently.

Eddie Howe has had to make do without players from back to front, whether it be influential stalwarts Sven Botman and Nick Pope, midfield pair Joelinton and Joe Willock or attacking duo Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson.

Newcastle midfielder Joelinton.

Newcastle's injury woes have eased a little in recent weeks and it has played a part in their results improving, both in the Premier League and the FA Cup, but that doesn't mean that they aren't still without important figures.

Now, a fresh update has emerged regarding the fitness of one such player, with concerning news dropping ahead of their next assignment in the league.

Callum Wilson could miss Bournemouth return

According to The Daily Mail's Hope, Callum Wilson could be unavailable for Newcastle's visit of Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.

Callum Wilson.

"Callum Wilson has suffered a pectoral injury and Newcastle are sweating on his fitness ahead of Saturday’s game at home to Bournemouth.

"Mail Sport now understands Wilson has an issue with his pec, the chest muscle that connects to the bones of the upper arm and shoulder. Newcastle are hopeful they will be able to manage the pain and allow the 31-year-old to play against his former club this weekend. However, only at the end of the week will a decision be made."

Wilson has experienced a frustrating season in the injury department again, bringing incredible influence when on the pitch but proving to be unavailable too often. He has scored seven goals in just eight league starts, but that lack of action highlights how much injuries have got in the way of his progress.

The issue suffered last weekend is just the latest setback in a long string of problems, and the hope is that he is eventually passed fit for the Bournemouth game – Howe has made it very clear how highly he thinks of him: "He’s a hugely important part of our team, a focal point. We rely not just on his goals but his movement, his work rate. His appearance in the team gave us confidence."

Wilson's experience and finishing ability are going to be important between now and the end of the season, especially if Isak is also sidelined with injury issues of his own.

A strong finish to the season still isn't out of the question for Newcastle, but not having both strikers on the pitch will do so much harm to their hopes of being in Europe next season. From a selfish point of view, Wilson will also be desperate to feature for England at Euro 2024, competing with the likes of Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney to make Gareth Southgate's squad.

Fabrizio Romano: Ratcliffe wants new director at Man Utd; Neville loves him

Manchester United will look to bring in a new director of football over the coming weeks, with a current Premier League official seemingly top of the list, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Man United's January window

The Red Devils were quiet in the winter window, which shouldn’t come as a major surprise given current director of football John Murtough’s comments back in December.

“Looking ahead to the January transfer window, we are not expecting it to be particularly busy. There will always be the possibility of deals around the edges of the squad, particularly in terms of finding opportunities for players who are not playing as much football as they would like.

“However, we’ve always been consistent in saying that we do not see January as the optimal time to do business and our recruitment strategy remains focused on summer windows.”

In fact, United and Erik ten Hag failed to make a single signing in January, with the main focus being on several outgoings. A number of players left the club on loan, including Jadon Sancho, Donny van de Beek and Hannibal Majbri, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS now looking ahead to the summer to conduct the majority of their business.

The Old Trafford shake-up is already in motion with the news of Manchester City's chief operating officer, Omar Berrada, being appointed to replace Richard Arnold, and it looks as if one man is in line to replace Murtough as director of football.

Romano shares Man United director of football “plan”

Talking in his daily briefing in the last 48 hours, relayed by One Football, Romano said that the “plan” is to bring in Newcastle United sporting director Dan Ashworth in the coming weeks.

“We know Man United need a new director of football, and the plan remains to try to bring Dan Ashworth to the club in the next weeks.”

This isn’t the first time that the 52-year-old has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, with reports back in December saying that the Newcastle man was “very keen” on the Red Devils role. He was named as the club’s top target at the time, and it doesn’t look as if that has changed.

Gary Neville is a fan of Ashworth, with the Red Devils legend taking to X earlier in the season to share an interaction he had with the Newcastle man prior to the Magpies’ 3-0 win at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup.

“On my way up to the gantry last night, I bumped into Dan Ashworth. He transformed the FA’s structure, set Brighton up for this incredible period of success and has now built a strong foundation for the new owners at Newcastle. He’s competent, highly qualified and knows what he’s doing.

“Will work with his coach, recruitment team and other departments coherently and calmly. In the last two matches, Manchester United have played two clubs that have installed proper football departments to support the team on the pitch and off it. The complete opposite of United. We haven’t got a sporting director! I used to travel up to Newcastle and feel sorry for their great fans when the energy and enthusiasm had been sapped from them under Mike Ashley. It was painful to see.

“Last night, we saw the Theatre of Dreams turn into the Theatre of Nothing. Every single United fan bored and flat. On the pitch, the players in shock, the performances woeful and a manager struggling in front of our eyes. We’ve seen it before, we know how it ends and we’ve had enough.”

Liverpool eyeing a true "genius" manager to replace Jurgen Klopp

To all appearances, Liverpool are flying high right now and, in theory, are well-placed to challenge for a quadruple, but a sense of dejection sits at the core of every supporter as the campaign edges closer to completion.

Jurgen Klopp is to stand down from his role as manager at Anfield at the end of the season, and this is no precipitous decision. The German has enjoyed sweeping success during his time at the club and has won Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup titles among others.

But the Reds are in a fine position indeed, top of the Premier League by five points, topping their Europa League group before Christmas, awaiting Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final and recently dispatching Norwich City 5-2 in the FA Cup fourth round, with further Championship opposition in the next round.

Klopp, by his own admission, is "running out of energy" after eight-and-a-half years of unrelenting action, and after fixing the issues of the 2022/23 term, the 56-year-old feels the time is right for a changing of the guard, with a shortlist compiled.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool's shortlist to replace Jurgen Klopp

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool have compiled a three-man shortlist to identify Klopp's successor.

While Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is the early frontrunner, Sporting Lisbon's Ruben Amorim and Italian manager Roberto De Zerbi are also coveted.

The latter has done an exemplary job with Brighton & Hove Albion and is reported to be high on FSG's wishlist, and given his experience and success on English shores, could be an excellent option.

Liverpool eye up "special" Xabi Alonso alternative to supercharge Nunez

Jurgen Klopp is approaching the dying embers of his Anfield tenure and FSG are working on a replacement.

ByAngus Sinclair Jan 29, 2024 How Roberto De Zerbi would benefit Mac Allister

Liverpool are in a fine position to get their hands on some silverware this season but more importantly, are poised for an exciting future with a rich blend of senior talent and prodigious potential.

De Zerbi has proved himself a "genius" tactician, as said by former player Maxime Lopez, and while he doesn't offer a replica of Klopp's heavy-metal style, the suffocating, possession-centric approach would be something that the Reds squad could adapt to.

Such a style demands a first-class operator to control the flow and enhance the fluency, but luckily Liverpool have such a player in Alexis Mac Allister, who left De Zerbi's Seagulls in the summer to complete a £35m transfer with the Merseyside outfit.

Mac Allister, a 2022 World Cup winner and the centrepiece in Brighton's Europa League qualification last year, impressed under the Seagulls boss with eight goals and three assists from midfield. That said, he has been playing in a deeper-lying role than he might desire with Liverpool but he has plied his trade expertly to ensure Liverpool are firing on all cylinders.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 15% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 18% for progressive passes and the top 20% for progressive carries per 90 to emphasise his creativity and ball-playing aptitude.

The Argentinan gem knows all about De Zerbi's managerial prowess and would welcome the Italian as a replacement for Klopp. Indeed, a more advanced role could be given to the summer signing again, meaning it's an appointment that should well ensure the 24-year-old moves to the next level; a frightening thought.

Bruno Fernandes wanted by Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr as Saudi Pro League side consider offer for Man Utd captain

Bruno Fernandes is reportedly wanted by Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr with the Saudi Arabian side considering a bid for the Manchester United captain.

According to Al-Nassr believe that Fernandes would be an ideal candidate to bolster their midfield and are ready to table a mega bid for the Portuguese to test United's resolve. The Premier League outfit sees their financial situation strained by Profit and Sustainability (PSR) rules and their budget for new acquisitions is contingent on the departure of some current players – which has further encouraged Al-Nassr to make an attempt to get Fernandes.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The report also mentions that Fernandes, who has a contract with United until at least 2026, is frustrated with the series of underwhelming campaigns and wants to ensure that the club's ambitions align with his own before committing his future to the Red Devils. It must be noted that United could potentially miss out on European football next season, which could further push the 29-year-old away from Old Trafford.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Meanwhile, United have already begun their summer clear-out intending to overhaul their existing roster. Raphael Varane recently announced his departure at the end of his contract in the summer. Anthony Martial is also set to leave when his deal expires in June. Christian Eriksen, with one year left on his contract, has also been put up for sale. In fact, the club is reportedly open to realistic offers for several first-team players, including Casemiro, who is the second-highest earner.

    WHAT NEXT?

The potential transfer of Fernandes to Al-Nassr highlights the broader trend of top European players being targeted by clubs in emerging football markets. Ronaldo's move to Al-Nassr has already set a precedent and Fernandes' addition would further signify the club's intent to build a formidable team as they look to challenge for the top prizes in Asia. In the short term, Fernandes remains focused on finishing the campaign on a high with United as victory in the FA Cup final would guarantee them a spot in the next edition of the Europa League – irrespective of their league standing.
