Liam Trevaskis guides Durham tail to competitive first-innings 350

Middlesex 88 for 2 (Stoneman 41) trail Durham 350 (Trevaskis 80*, Eckersley 58, Roland-Jones 4-72) by 262 runsDurham’s Liam Trevaskis missed out on the opportunity of a maiden LV= Insurance County Championship hundred on a truncated second day against Middlesex at Lord’s.The 23-year-old all-rounder, who posted his first-class best of 88 at Hove last month, was left stranded on 80 after running out of partners as Durham were dismissed for exactly 350.Toby Roland-Jones finished with figures of four for 72, with Seaxes’ wicketkeeper John Simpson claiming four dismissals – including an eye-catching one-handed dive to remove Brydon Carse.England’s new Test captain Ben Stokes made the breakthrough when Middlesex replied, having former team-mate Mark Stoneman caught at slip in his first over as the home side closed on 88 for two.Heavy rain in the morning delayed the resumption of play until 2.40pm, when Tim Murtagh (three for 43) swiftly made inroads by taking wickets in successive overs.Ned Eckersley could only add a single to his overnight 57 before being caught behind off Murtagh’s outswinger, while Ben Raine departed without scoring as a leading edge sailed tamely into the hands of mid-on.However, Trevaskis advanced to his half-century with a confident cover drive for four off Roland-Jones and Carse (28) batted pugnaciously alongside him as the pair put on 58 for the eighth wicket.Carse made a late, successful bid to secure a third batting bonus point, hammering Luke Hollman for successive sixes and lifting Durham above 300 with just a ball to spare before the cut-off point. But he eventually perished to an acrobatic leg-side catch by Simpson, who reacted smartly to leap to his left and pouch Carse’s miscued hook one-handed at full stretch. The keeper went on to collect two further catches, both off Roland-Jones, who polished off the visitors’ tail on the stroke of tea.Chris Rushworth almost struck an early blow when Middlesex replied, finding the edge of Sam Robson’s bat with the fifth ball of the innings, but Durham skipper Scott Borthwick juggled and spilled the chance at second slip.Robson capitalised on that let-off, finding the leg-side boundary with some regularity as he and Stoneman (41) added 86 before the left-hander – having just hit Stokes twice to the short boundary – slashed to first slip.Nightwatchman Ethan Bamber lasted just two balls before Rushworth nipped one back to hit his stumps, with bad light halting play at the end of the over.

10 years of NXGN: From Christian Pulisic to Ricardo Pepi to Gio Reyna, tracking the progress of American wonderkids

GOAL takes a look at the careers of some of the most highly-touted American prospects over the past decade

There is no shortage of American talent in the soccer sphere, with the United States now a well-established hub for top-tier footballers capable of playing at the highest levels worldwide. But ability is one thing. Having it all come together, in the right place, at the right time, with the right manager, at the right club, is another prospect entirely.

And in recent years, the United States has seen something of a mixed bag. Christian Pulisic, by some distance the most talent player of his generation, needed nearly five years and three clubs to find his best. Tim Weah and Gio Reyna – both fine footballers in their own right – have never quite enjoyed full seasons of success in accordance with what has been considered their potential.

Meanwhile, there have been some prospects that simply haven't panned out, such as the much-hyped but never-quite-reliable Konrad de la Fuente. And of course, there are some who are still far too young to tell – including Philadelphia Union gem Cavan Sullivan.

For 10 years, GOAL has produced NXGN lists to put a spotlight on the world's top teenage stars. Here's a look at the careers of some of the highly-touted American prospects over that span.

Getty Images SportChristian Pulisic

NXGN Year: 2017

NXGN Position: 3

Current club: ACMilan

Where is he now? The only real debate surrounding Christian Pulisic is whether he's world-class. Certainly, the former Dortmund man has gone from strength to strength, recovering from a poor spell at Chelsea to establish himsefl as the main man for Milan. He broke out in the 2023-24 season under Stefano Pioli, and has only improved since then. He leads Milan in goal contributions this campaign, and his performances against Real Madrid and Inter have helped carry the Serie A side to some significant wins. For the USMNT, he is even better. A reliable goalscorer who consistently delivers in big moments, Pulisic is right in the conversation among the best Americans to ever kick a ball.

AdvertisementImagnTimothy Weah

NXGN Year: 2019

NXGN position: 17

Current club: Juventus

Where is he now? TimothyWeah's career has been a bit mixed. Of course, he was always going to be unfairly compared to his father, who became the first African to win the Ballon d'Or when he claimed the award in 1995. Weah hasn't hit those highs – and likely never will. Instead, he had been a solid player in a number of high-pressure environments without ever truly finding top form. Stints at PSG, Celtic and Lille yielded varying degrees of success. Juventus doesn't quite seem the best fit, either. Weah is a winger through and through, but has too often been used out of position, either as a right back or No. 9. His showings for the USMNT – when he is allowed to play out wide – prove that there is still very much a player here. And at 25, there remains plenty of room to grow.

GettyJosh Sargent

NXGN Year: 2019

NXGN position: 34

Current club: Norwich

Where is he now? JoshSargent's quality is undeniable, but his level is yet to be determined. He impressed in spells as a teenager with Werder Bremen, but managed just 15 goals in 83 appearances for the club. He has fared better at Norwich, scoring in bunches in the English Championship, establishing himself as a top-tier striker in the second division. The Premier League was a level too high in 2021-22, with Sargent finding the net just twice in 26 appearances. There is talk of a transfer to a higher division – with a Premier League return rumored. It would seem to be the right time for the American to truly test himself, especially if he wants to be the USMNT's striker of the future.

GettyKonrad de la Fuente

NXGN Year: 2020

NXGN position: 39

Current club: Lausanne-Sport

Where is he now? From La Masia to the Swiss League, it's never quite worked out for Konrad De La Fuente. The hype was easy to understand, a technical and athletic winger from Miami electing to join the Barcelona Academy at 17. But it never came together for him in Catalonia, the U.S. youth national failing to make a La Liga appearance before leaving for Marseille in 2021. Since then, he's struggled for playing time, and has made just four starts for Lausanne-Sport this campaign.

Chelsea need to sell their £64m problem who Boehly dubbed "world-class"

One thing Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital have tried to do since taking over Chelsea is lower their wage bill, bringing in younger talents before they hit their prime, and making their pay structure more incentive-based, to reward the top performers.

The club’s current highest earner is the club captain, Reece James, who is earning £250k-per-week, coming through the academy ranks, and being valued as one of the Blues’ best players when he is fit. However, people could argue he isn’t currently justifying that wage, as he is often out with injury issues.

One name that stands out in Chelsea’s top ten earners, is Raheem Sterling. Despite being out on loan with Arsenal this season, he still ranks as the seventh highest earner at the club, and next season, when he returns, he would be back to the top earner, on a whopping £325k-per-week.

Raheem Sterling's time at Chelsea

When Chelsea signed Sterling for £47.5m from Manchester City back in 2022, Boehly said Sterling was a “world-class” talent, who was also a “serial winner” and he couldn’t wait to have him playing at Stamford Bridge.

But things didn’t turn out that way, as the winger struggled to live up to the expectations set for him, not providing the same output as he did at City, and not providing enough overall quality elsewhere to make up for that lack of goals and assists.

In his 81 appearances for the club, the Englishman has scored 19 goals and provided 12 assists, totalling 5,326 minutes. This output wasn’t enough to justify his mega salary and Enzo Maresca made it clear in pre-season that other wingers would be ahead of Sterling in the pecking order, leading to his loan move to Arsenal this summer.

Raheem Sterling for Chelsea

However, The Blues will still have an expensive problem to deal with next summer, a £64.4m problem to be exact combining his £47.5 purchase fee and £16.9m-per year-wages, as they look to offload the 29-year-old on a permanent basis.

How Chelsea's wingers compare to Sterling

The two wide players for Chelsea with the most appearances so far this term are Noni Madueke and summer signing, Pedro Neto.

The former has made 16 appearances, scoring six goals and providing two assists, whilst Neto has also made 16 appearances, scoring three times and providing three assists.

Madueke has thrived this season, ranking highest in seven of the 11 metrics measured above, providing the most progressive actions, the highest shot volume, and the most output per 90 (goals + assists).

Neto, on the other hand, whilst he hasn’t added the same level of output as Madueke, has added a new creative level to this Chelsea side, producing the most xAG (expected assisted goals), playing the most key passes per 90, and generating the most shot-creating actions per 90.

Chelsea have been much better off this campaign without Sterling in the side, and therefore the challenge will come next summer as they look to offload the 29-year-old on such high wages, which could prove to be the biggest stumbling block. Either way, they must find a way to lose him permanently.

Signed in 2023, now worth 120% more: Ipswich hit gold with "unique" star

It’s been a frankly extraordinary few seasons for Ipswich Town.

The club appointed an inexperienced manager in Kieran McKenna, who has led them to back-to-back promotions, making it back into the Premier League for the first time in 22 years.

However, while much of the club’s recent success is down to the man management and tactical nous of the Northern Irishman, the players and brilliant transfers conducted in recent windows can’t be forgotten.

For example, in the summer of 2023, the Blues signed several exciting talents who have since become essential players for the club, including one star whose value has skyrocketed 120%.

Ipswich's brilliant 2023 signings

So, before we get to the player whose value has more than doubled since joining the club, let’s take a look at a couple of other brilliant signings made in 2023, starting with a loan acquisition: Omari Hutchinson.

Yes, a year before he made a permanent £20m switch to Portman Road, the former Chelsea prospect joined McKenna’s revolution on a season-long loan and made quite the impression as his subsequent transfer would suggest.

In all, the Redhill-born talent made 50 appearances across all competitions, scoring 11 goals, providing six assists, and winning the club’s Young Player of the Year Award to boot.

However, the 20-year-old was not the only savvy pickup in 2023, as another player who arrived for nothing was former Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe, who joined on a free transfer in September.

The once-capped Congolese international was limited to just a handful of appearances for the first half of the season due to injury and fitness concerns, but once he was given a run of starts in February, his ability was impossible to deny.

By the end of the campaign, he was the club’s starting right-back, and while a thumb injury has seen him sidelined since October 4th, the Bunia-born gem started the first six league games of this season, showing that he can and likely will have a large part to play this year.

However, there was another exciting player the club signed and paid for last season that has just grabbed the headlines and has seen his valuation more than double.

George Hirst's valuation in 2024

Yes, the player in question is English striker George Hirst, who joined Ipswich from Leicester City for about £1.5m in July 2023.

The Sheffield-born poacher impressed on loan with Portsmouth in the 2021/22 season, but with just two appearances for the Foxes, there were some question marks over how he would fare in the Championship, but to say he has exceeded expectations at Portman Road so far would be an understatement.

For example, while injuries limited the “unique” marksman, as dubbed by McKenna, to just 29 appearances for the club last season, he still managed to rack up a seriously impressive haul of seven goals and seven assists, meaning he maintained an average of a goal involvement once every 2.07 games.

Moreover, while knee surgery in the summer has limited his game time this season, the “powerful” 25-year-old, as dubbed by journalist Alan Biggs, looked brilliant on his first start against Brentford over the weekend, scoring and assisting a goal in the first half.

Unsurprisingly, these impressive performances for the Tractor Boys have seen the poacher’s valuation soar, with Transfermarkt now pricing him at €4m, which converts to around £3.3m, or 120% more than he cost the club just over a year ago.

Ultimately, Ipswich made several clever signings last summer, and while he might not be a household name at the moment, Hirst looks more than ready to make an impact in the Premier League this season.

Ipswich’s star performer’s display ultimately amounted to nothing against Brentford.

White-ball coaches to link up post-World Cup, as Collingwood warns about bubble life

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Nov-2021Graham Thorpe, England men’s assistant coach, will head up the advance party’s preparations for the Ashes, when the Test specialists and Lions arrive in Australia this weekend.Thorpe will stand in for head coach Chris Silverwood while England’s white-ball squad complete their T20 World Cup campaign in the UAE, with the tour party due to undergo 14 days of quarantine on the Gold Coast, before moving to Brisbane to play two intra-squad warm-up matches later in the month. The extended squad, including the 15-man Lions party, is due to arrive in Australia on Saturday, a month in advance of the first Test at the Gabba, starting on December 8. They will undergo three days of hard quarantine, but have been granted an exemption to undertake socially distanced training at Carrara’s Metricon Stadium from November 10-20.Thorpe will be assisted in this initial period by Jon Lewis, the ECB’s elite pace bowling coach, along with Carl Hopkinson (fielding coach), Bruce French (wicketkeeping consultant) and Jonathan Trott (batting consultant), all of whom will remain with the Lions squad. Kent’s Min Patel and Nottinghamshire’s Ant Botha have also been seconded from the county network to assist with the tour.Related

England’s former bowling coach, Troy Cooley – who played a key role in honing England’s pace attack ahead of the 2005 Ashes – is understood to have been recruited to assist with the squad’s build-up to the first Test, with an announcement expected in the coming days. The coaching staff will be completed once the white-ball squad has completed its own quarantine period, with Silverwood due to be joined by Paul Collingwood, Jeetan Patel and James Foster, all of whom are currently in Sharjah preparing for England’s final group match against South Africa on Saturday, with their place in the semi-finals all but certain.Speaking from England’s white-ball camp in the UAE, Collingwood welcomed the chance to get stuck into the next leg of their winter campaign.”We’ve got two exciting parts of our cricketing history and that’s the T20 World Cup and the Ashes,” Collingwood said. “I’m very much looking forward to being a part of it.”I’ll be 100% honest, I’m not great with bubble life, I don’t really enjoy it that much, but I’m hoping Australia is going to have a little bit more freedom out there to go and enjoy the country and the cricket, because to be successful out there is hard work but it’s very satisfying if you do well.”The ECB and Cricket Australia, in consultation with Australia’s state and federal governments, agreed to a number of measures to enable the Ashes to take place this winter in spite of the country’s stringent Covid-19 restrictions, including an allowance for families to join the tour. While Collingwood was grateful for the concessions, he warned that the use of bio-secure environments for international tours could not last indefinitely.”I think world cricket has done really well so far, in terms of how much bubble life we’ve done,” he said. “We all cope in different ways. It’s tough. Being very honest, I’m not sure how much more bubble life world cricket can take – not just the England team, I’m saying world cricket here.”We’re going to have to look closely at mental welfare moving forwards. I don’t think it can continue for too much longer,” Collingwood added. “I think a lot of players and management around the world are close to capacity in terms of how much they can take with this. Hopefully the hierarchy look into it and in the future we find ways that we’re not so restricted.”It puts a lot of pressure on, not just individuals, but families as well. Campher on emulating Malinga: 'Maybe it will set in a bit later'

Four wickets in four balls to be in elite company alongside T20 superstars Lasith Malinga and Rashid Khan. Knocking off the winning runs in the chase. Scooping up the Player-of-the-Match award. Curtis Campher packed his World Cup debut with plenty of highlights as Ireland opened their T20 World Cup campaign with a resounding victory against Netherlands in Abu Dhabi. The start, however, wasn’t as rosy for Campher. After being introduced into the attack in the seventh over, Campher floated two half-trackers that were cracked to the square boundaries. He said he offered an apology to his captain Andy Balbirnie before switching ends and his own fortunes. When Campher darted a short delivery down the leg side, Colin Ackermann was late on a pull and ended up snicking behind to wicketkeeper Neil Rock. He then went full to attack the pads and stumps. Ryan ten Doeschate and Scott Edwards were both dismissed lbw, playing around their front pads. Campher completed the sequence when he had Roelof van der Merwe chopping on.Related

“To be honest, I wasn’t really thinking about it [emulating Malinga and Rashid],” Campher said at the post-match press conference. “Maybe it will set in a little bit later, but I’m just trying to do what I want to do – when Tendo walked in we knew we had to go straight to him and that worked and then just carried on to Edwards too. Both those [attacking the stumps] were plans worked out from the analyst and that kind of fit into my game, so maybe in a few hours or a few days, it might rub off. But to be honest I’m just happy with the win and that’s all that matters.”So, how did Campher manage to compose himself before the hat-trick ball?ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“My heart was racing quite high, but I just took a few deep breaths at the top of my run and just tried to make sure I manage my skills,” Campher recalled. “Obviously, I didn’t really finish the last over as well as I wanted to, but I’m learning and I’m young. I’m just trying to do the best that I can.”Campher credited fellow seamers Mark Adair and Josh Little for handcuffing Netherlands in the powerplay and making life easier for him. Adair, in particular, operated with great control, coming away with 3 for 9. Only Kevin O’Brien has conceded fewer runs in a four-over spell for Ireland in T20Is.”Personally for me, it [four in four] gives us a lot of momentum,” Campher said. “As a bowling unit when you have three guys going under six, it makes a big difference. As far as a bowling unit, we’re really good I think. On another day, I can go for 10s and 12s, but the pressure that the guys built there managed to make me get the wickets. So, listened to Mark Adair, Josh [Little], Simi [Singh], and Whitey [Ben White], we hunted as a unit and I was actually lucky to get the results.”Campher was recently on the sidelines, a shoulder injury forcing him to sit out the three-match World Cup Super league series against Zimbabwe in September. He had injured his AC joint in his shoulder while diving on the field during his T20I debut in August. Prior to that, he had undergone surgery for a long-standing ankle problem. Quite naturally, he was pleased to be back in action although he didn’t expect his World Cup bow to be as grand as this.”I might sound like a broken record, but right now I’m just really enjoying my cricket. I’m just happy to be on the park and have this opportunity,” he said. “I think people take for granted if you play [for] a long time. When I got injured – obviously no one should have injuries – but to bounce back and actually just start enjoying my cricket, just grateful to be out there, whether I get hit for 60 or 70 or don’t score a run, I’m just happy to be out there and playing for my country.”

Western Australia only lost one match last season in the Shield but it was their last one against Tasmania which cost them a spot in the final. They only won two and had five draws. They batted superbly all season led by a sensational summer from Cameron Green (922 runs at 76.83). Green, Josh Inglis, Shaun Marsh, Cameron Bancroft, and Sam Whiteman each scored three centuries, but their bowling lacked penetration. They took 10 wickets in just six innings for the entire season and two of those innings cost more than 432. Cameron Gannon was the leading wicket-taker with 24 scalps but they came at 39.58 apiece with a strike-rate of 78.9, while Matt Kelly was the only other bowler to claim 20 wickets. WA made the final in the Marsh Cup but were unable to defend their title, collapsing in a chase of 252 against New South Wales. Their batting was hot and cold in the 50-over format with three scores over 300, with Green and Shaun Marsh scoring a century each, but they were twice bowled out for under 150, including in the final. Joel Paris was the star performer with the ball taking 10 wickets in just three games. Player to watch
Josh Inglis has bolted into the Australia T20 World Cup squad but his long-form ability will also have him sharply in focus with Australia Test wicketkeeper Tim Paine recovering from neck surgery and coming to the end of his career. Inglis scored 585 runs at 73.12 last season to put pressure on Alex Carey as Paine’s first-choice successor. Inglis’ batting ability against spin and his excellent glovework will certainly put him in the frame for Australia’s three scheduled tours of the subcontinent in 2022. Australia radar
With Green already in the Test team and Inglis becoming a player of interest, WA is aiming to add more players into the Test ranks having already provided a number of Australia limited-overs players over the past 12 months. Jhye Richardson has had an interrupted pre-season but at his best, he sits alongside James Pattinson and Michael Neser as Australia’s next crop of Test fast bowlers behind the big three of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc. Mitchell Marsh has gone to a new level with his batting over the winter in the shortest form and newfound confidence won’t harm his Test chances if Australia wishes to take more allrounders to the subcontinent.
