Ed Pollock fireworks drive Worcestershire to statement win against Middlesex

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Last week, La Liga confirmed a significant reduction to Barca's salary limit, saying that the club's €100 million (£83m/$108m) sale of VIP seats would not be included in the calculations. The news dealt a severe blow to the Catalan side's summer transfer plans and temporarily cast doubt on the possibility of Dani Olmo and Pau Victor continuing to play this term after the debacle over their registrations.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Barca reacted furiously to the release of the information, saying La Liga and president Tebas are guilty of breaching their own rules by making it public. The club believe it is part of a "large-scale" defamation campaign against them, while public comments from the league's head honcho were also addressed.

  • WHAT BARCELONA SAID

Barcelona declared in a statement that they expressed their “surprise and indignation” after La Liga published the information on April 2, saying they were unaware of and gave no consent for its publication.

The publication prompted "the Catalan entity to send a letter asking the boss, its president and any member of this body to refrain from making any comment or assessment on the economic information sent by the Catalan club, in order to deal with [the publication] of confidential material. Barca underlines the inappropriate behavior of LaLiga in making public details of the financial information provided by the club to the employer as well as in making public the decisions of LaLiga bodies against FC Barcelona, a fact that, in the club's opinion, 'is a flagrant violation of LaLiga's obligations towards one of its affiliates, as well as an express breach of Article 5 of the Normas de Elaboración de Presupuestos'."

Taking aim at Tebas, the statement went on: "Furthermore, the Barca club regrets that the published Information Note 'has been the trigger for a large-scale defamation campaign against the club and the president by the media; a campaign that is being used as an excuse to question the legitimacy of the competitive situation of our first team'.

"Another reproach that the club makes to LaLiga is due to public statements by its president, Javier Tebas, 'against our players, such as Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor – legally registered as recently reiterated by the Superior Council of Sports in its resolution of 3 April 2025'.

"The statements of the president of LaLiga represent 'a clear attempt at destabilisation that is unacceptable' coming from the highest representative of the competition organiser, while indicating that Mr. Tebas’ constant public statements about details of the club’s economic situation –according to his particular interpretation– or that he expresses particular opinions about leaving our players without a license when, to date, he has already been proven wrong on two occasions cannot be accepted."

    WHAT NEXT FOR BARCA?

Barca called for the salary statement to be removed from La Liga's website and has renounced its membership of La Liga's Delegate Commission. Despite the off-field drama, Hansi Flick's team are top of the Spanish top-flight and hold a four-point lead over Real Madrid. Meanwhile, they will hope to boost their hopes of Champions League success when they face Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.

Man City player ratings vs Bournemouth: Nico O'Reilly is a star in the making – youngster and fellow super-sub Omar Marmoush propel Pep Guardiola's side to FA Cup semis after Erling Haaland penalty miss and injury scare

The young left-back set up both goals in a resounding second-half display from the Cityzens but there was concern as the Norwegian came off injured

Pep Guardiola used his bench astutely to guide Manchester City out of a tricky FA Cup tie at Bournemouth and into the semi-finals for the seventh year in a row. The Cityzens were on the rocks at half-time, trailing to Evanilson's goal after Erling Haaland had seen a penalty saved, but the Catalan acted decisively and inspired his side to win 2-1 and book their place at Wembley to face Nottingham Forest in the last four.

He chucked on Nico O'Reilly and the inexperienced but thrilling youngster turned the game on its head, setting up Haaland to equalise and then laying off the ball for fellow substitute Omar Marmoush to put City's noses in front. It was a textbook game of two halves as Bournemouth looked confident of reaching the semi-finals for the first time after an excellent 45 minutes but completely faded in the second as City did what they do best and totally controlled the second period.

There was one big negative for City long-term though as Haaland hobbled off with a foot injury. In the short-term, however, the injury ended up benefitting Guardiola's side as Marmoush replaced the Norwegian and struck two minutes later, helped by a clever pass from O'Reilly and some sloppy goalkeeping from the otherwise excellent Kepa Arrizabalaga.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Ederson (5/10):

Didn't command his box or distribute well. Wrong-footed by Kluivert's shot which Evanilson knocked in.

    Matheus Nunes (3/10):

Looked uncomfortable even before his double error which led to Bournemouth's goal, gifting possession away in the final third then failing to track Kluivert.

    Abdukodir Khusanov (4/10):

Let Evanilson get in front of him to score and then got booked before half-time, making Guardiola's mind up for him and being hauled off at half-time.

    Ruben Dias (5/10):

Steered City back to normality after a shy fist half display.

    Josko Gvardiol (6/10):

One of City's more comfortable defenders in the first half then shifted to centre-back for the second and looked even more assured.

    Midfield

    Ilkay Gundogan (6/10):

Compensated for his lack of mobility with some clever moves. Hit the post in the second half after being denied by Kepa in the first.

    Mateo Kovacic (6/10):

Was key to City having a vice-like grip on the second half.

    Bernardo Silva (7/10):

Played with intelligence and dominated the play after half-time. Helped win the penalty.

    Attack

    Phil Foden (6/10):

Had a pretty quiet game save for an exciting run through the middle which was let down by a poor shot.

    Erling Haaland (4/10):

Had a terrible day on the whole despite scoring. Missed three clear efforts, including the penalty, and then picked up a worrying-looking injury.

    Kevin De Bruyne (6/10):

Had a bad first half but helped City back into it with his defence-splitting passes, such as the one that released O'Reilly.

  • AFP

    Subs & Manager

    Nico O'Reilly (8/10):

Changed the game by setting up both goals, continuing his incredible record in the FA Cup which now reads three goals and two assists in four matches.

    Omar Marmoush (7/10):

An ideal replacement for Haaland, scoring with his first touch albeit thanks to bad goalkeeping.

    Jack Grealish (6/10):

The perfect player to bring on after taking the lead. Held the ball up comfortably and ensured Bournemouth had no chance of getting back in it.

    James McAtee (N/A):

An 83rd-minute substitute. Picked up a late booking.

    Nico Gonzalez (N/A):

Brought on in the 83rd minute to further shore up the middle.

    Pep Guardiola (8/10):

Bringing O'Reilly on was a stroke of genius and he must have had harsh words at half-time as his team came out with a totally different attitude.

Mooney: Lack of game time against Pakistan could be a 'blessing in disguise'

Beth Mooney has admitted that Australia are wary of the challenge Pakistan’s spinners might pose for them on Tuesday on the used Bay Oval surface, where on Sunday, India collapsed after a strong start. To counter a potential spin-dominant ploy from Pakistan, Australia have had to tweak their plans “a little bit, slightly”, Mooney said.”We obviously had the opportunity to play over here last year in a similar time, and we had three one-dayers at the Bay Oval here [against New Zealand] and played on the same wicket all three times,” Mooney said on match eve in Mount Maunganui. “And when we got to the third game, it had slowed up quite a lot. So using that intel that we had from last year when we played will become really handy for us as a batting unit and a bowling unit.Related

  • India vs Pakistan: The record Rana-Vastrakar stand

“So we expect that Pakistan’s bowlers… their spinners especially bowl quite differently to ours in terms of pace through the air. So we had a session today, specifically on that as a top six, and hopefully we can use that to our advantage tomorrow.”Australia haven’t played Pakistan in ODIs since October 2018, and have only ever played 12 50-over games against them, winning each fixture. Mooney believes the lack of game time against Pakistan over the years could be a “blessing in disguise”, and said that watching the India vs Pakistan match, where spinners picked up five India wicket in the space of 12.1 overs, has helped Australia make adjustments to their plans.”We watched a little bit of the game yesterday just to see what they were doing in terms of the bowlers. Our bowling unit watched a little bit of their batting as well,” said Mooney. “So I think it’s almost a blessing in disguise at times when we come up against an unknown opponent of sorts and obviously we played them a few years ago now. So that’s very different about that group.”I thought they were outstanding with the ball yesterday and outstanding with the bat against India. So, yeah, it’s a different kind of challenge. But I think what we probably have focused on a little bit more in the last few months is worrying about what we can control and how we want to go about our game. So hopefully we can do that again tomorrow and adjust where we have to and adapt where we can.”Save for opener Alyssa Healy’s early dismissal, Australia, frontrunners for the title, showed no weaknesses with the bat in their high-scoring opening game against defending champions England. Rachael Haynes and Meg Lanning’s record 196-run second-wicket stand meant Australia’s middle-order got time to bat only after the 42nd over. Even then, No. 4 Mooney, who made 27 not out, and No. 5 Ellyse Perry dug in as Australia powered to 310 for 3.Mooney felt that despite the Pakistani spinners’ impressive performance against India, Australia would be able to replicate their batting dominance at Bay Oval, where the match will be played on the same strip that was used for the West Indies vs New Zealand and the India vs Pakistan games.”Something that we pride ourselves on as a batting group is making sure we’re always moving the game forward and accessing different areas of the ground obviously to get the fields that we want,” Mooney said. “So just seeing a little bit of that in the game yesterday will be really important for us heading into tomorrow.”In terms of team news, Ashleigh Gardner is serving a ten-day isolation in Christchurch after testing positive for Covid-19, and Heather Graham, who has played a solitary ODI, has been drafted in as a temporary replacement for Gardner. A Covid-19 replacement at the 2022 ODI World Cup can be temporary, in that once the player has recovered, she would be eligible to return to the squad in position of the travelling reserve that replaced her.

Ipswich could axe Hutchinson with January move for "unique" PL star

Ipswich Town will already be pondering what moves to make this coming January, praying that some deals in through the door during the transfer window could steer the Tractor Boys away from the relegation drop-zone in the Premier League.

Until then, however, Kieran McKenna will be tasked with picking his troops up from off the floor after a sobering 4-1 defeat to West Ham United last time out, as Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus toyed with the away side in the humbling demolition job.

Omari Hutchinson will know he needs to up his performances moving forward, to remain in his manager’s good books, after struggling throughout the one-sided contest at the London Stadium.

Hutchinson's performance vs West Ham

The former Chelsea youngster would have a quiet afternoon away at the Hammers, with no end product present in the 20-year-old’s game, away from some slaloming runs attempting to unlock the home side’s defence.

Hutchinson would fail to register a single shot on the home side’s goal during the 4-1 win in favour of the hosts, whilst also failing to deliver a single accurate cross into the box from two attempts, as the flashy attacker failed in his mission to breach Julen Lopetegui’s men time after time.

The 20-year-old, much like some of his other flustered teammates, has seemingly struggled with the gigantic step-up in quality, with zero goals coming his way from seven Premier League contests to date.

In stark contrast, when starring in the league below week in week out last season, Hutchinson would score an impressive ten strikes from 44 games, playing a key role in McKenna’s side unbelievably sealing promotion up to the elite division.

Long gone are the days now when the Tractor Boys number 18 would hammer home goals like this to send the Portman Road masses into raptures, with McKenna perhaps tempted to revisit this deal in January to boost his side’s attacking midfield numbers away from the former Chelsea man.

The transfer Ipswich could look to revisit

Back in the summer, the newly promoted outfit were linked with an ever-growing list of exciting faces, as the Ipswich boss went about adding in sprinkles of quality here and there to ensure his side took to the step-up well.

There might well be a regret on the Suffolk side’s end now that they didn’t try and tie up a deal for Miguel Almiron to join from Newcastle United, who is undeniably experienced at the level, having been reportedly been interested in his services back in May, as per TEAMTalk.

Although it does look as if the Paraguayan’s time at St James’ Park is coming to a natural end now – with the same outlet more recently reporting that a January exit looks in store – the table above shows how much of an asset he has been to the Magpies in the Premier League over the last couple of seasons, with a stunning 11 goals picked up during the 2022/23 campaign.

Last year, Howe would go out of his way to wax lyrical about Almiron – even when his form wasn’t blowing the league away – describing the South American attacker as “unique”, with the 30-year-old clearly very highly thought of.

Almiron could well have even struck up an electric relationship up top with Liam Delap if the pair had managed to link up with each other at Portman Road, with the raw former Manchester City striker netting an impressive four goals from seven league games, even as his team struggles like they did away at the London Stadium.

Newcastle United forward Miguel Almiron.

Adding in the 30-year-old could also have meant McKenna was less reliant on having to play Hutchinson in a number ten role behind the lone Delap, with the former Manchester United coach turned Tractor Boys icon then pushing the ex-Chelsea attacker back to the flanks or onto the bench.

Almiron would then tussle it out with Conor Chaplin to the rights over that main attacking midfield spot, with plenty of positives to latch onto if a deal had been successful.

There could be a chance still that this move is reignited in January, with Almiron looking to be heading for the exit door soon in Tyneside, as McKenna attempts to boost his relegation-threatened side with some new welcome additions shortly.
