Iran women cop Olympic ban over headscarves

Iran’s women’s football team has been banned from playing an Olympic qualifier because their Islamic dress broke FIFA rules.Females have to comply with a mandatory dress code in the Islamic state, which means they play matches in tracksuits and full head covers.

But FIFA rules for the 2012 Games state that teams are not allowed to display political or religious messages or slogans on their equipment.

The Iranian team was prevented from playing a qualifier against Jordan on Friday because of the dress code violation, and their forfeit handed their opposition a 3-0 win.

Vice President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Football Federation Farideh Shojaei said Iran had made alterations to their uniforms after a similar ban last year, and that FIFA had approved those changes.

“We provided a kit. Mr Kafashian took it to FIFA and showed it to Mr Sepp Blatter. And they proved that this conduct conforms to the fourth article of the FIFA constitution, which says (a kit should be) devoid of politics or religion,” Shojaei said.

“And in reality, this kit is neither religious, nor political, nor will it lead to harm a player. They proved this, and Mr Sepp Blatter accepted this and we participated in the Olympics.”

FIFA banned the hijab in 2007 and informed Iranian officials before the match that they would not be able to play in head scarves for safety reasons.

The world governing body declared that Jordan were also told about the ruling – with the country deciding not to select players who elected to wear the Islamic dress.

At the 2010 Youth Olympics, Iran’s girls were able to play in specially designed head gear.

Injury boost for Fergie

Sir Alex Ferguson has stated that his Manchester United squad’s injury list is getting shorter, as Nani is on the verge of returning to training.

The Portuguese winger has missed the Red Devils’ last three games, but the Scottish coach has revealed that he, and Phil Jones, are improving.

“There are no problems with injuries,” he told the club’s official website.

“It’s much better now. There was Jones getting that bout of ‘flu but he’s back. Jones was actually back on Friday but we didn’t risk him on Sunday. He’ll be available.

“So they’re all training apart from Nani, who should not be far away and might start training this week, while Anderson and Michael Owen are the only other ones out.

“Nemanja Vidic and Darren Fletcher are obviously still long term,” he concluded.

United will look to stretch their lead at the top of the Premier League when they face Fulham on Monday night.

Top TEN signings that continue to baffle Tottenham fans

Every so often, your team makes an absolutely inexplicable signing. United may never provide an explanation for the purchase of Bebe last year and the Gunners likewise with Amaury Bischoff in 2008, so who are Tottenham’s most baffling signings since the Premier League began?

It is important to distinguish between Spurs worst signings and their most inexplicable. Jason Dozzell features in most Tottenham fans nightmare elevens but when he was signed he was considered a great talent so he’s not making this list. This criteria will automatically shorten the list, it is not the practice of football clubs to knowingly spend money on someone pants, still it is amazing how often they do.

All of these signings must have been closely followed by the question ‘why did we sign him?’ These are the players that make you question the value of a scouting network or even its existence. The top ten players that were never going to make the grade but were signed anyway.

Harry Redknapp backs Aaron Lennon to shine

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp believes the return to form of Aaron Lennon could have a key bearing on the result of his side's intriguing Champions League clash with Inter Milan in the San Siro.

The former Leeds United winger made a slow start to the campaign after struggling for England at the World Cup finals, but showed in the weekend victory at Fulham glimpses of his best form.

Redknapp is looking forward to pitting his wits against Inter boss Rafa Benitez again, saying:"I thought when Aaron came on against Fulham, that was the best we'd seen from him for a while. He came on, he was positive and he attacked the full-back.

"He's got fantastic pace and, one on one, he's a threat to any full-back. I thought that he was back to his best last Saturday. This year, he's tended to get it and pass it without attacking people but I thought last weekend was his best performance.

"People go through spells in football, it's confidence or whatever. However, the way he played on Saturday will have done him good.

"Getting at people and attacking defenders is what we expect from him and what we need from him. That's when he's at his finest. Hopefully he's back to that now and we'll see some more of that.

Jermain Defoe not fooling anyone

Jermain Defoe has claimed that Fabio Capello was ‘unlucky’ during England’s dismal World Cup campaign in South Africa. It’s a nice sentiment from the Tottenham forward, but he isn’t fooling anyone.

Defoe argued:

“If you speak to the players, they all say the same – he’s a great manager. He was just a little bit unlucky” (The Sun)

The Three Lions were awful in the group stages following draws with both the USA and Algeria, then got over-excited about a 1-0 victory over the mighty Slovenia. In the second round England were pitted up against Germany and were then soundly beaten 4-1.

Capello was heavily criticised for continuously playing a dated 442, fielding Emile Heskey, wasting Steven Gerrard out on the left of midfield and seemed to upset his squad with his overly strict regime. This is nothing to do with luck, he just made mistakes and he knows this.

However, he was unlucky with some things as players like Wayne Rooney decided not to show up, forget the basics of the game and disappointed on the world’s stage. He was also unfortunate that John Terry decided to air the problems within the camp so publicly, which seemed to cause tension between the Chelsea man and the captain Gerrard.

It’s clear to all that Capello must change his way, but clearly Defoe believes that the Italian is the right man for the job and so do the FA…however, keeping him on may have more to do with the price it would take to sack him.

England were rubbish and Defoe’s words just sound like arse-kissing to me much like his talk of Joe Cole’s “passion and drive” in order to convince the former Chelsea midfielder to sign for Spurs and join him at White Hart Lane.

Alternatively, Defoe is doing nothing more than publicly backing his coach but it is something that did not need saying. The fans want an apology, not meaningless excuses and tales of hard-luck.

Are fans tired of hearing the England players/coach/Football Association come up with these excuses and why is it so hard to get a simple ‘sorry’?

What the hell has happened to Aston Villa’s Stephen Ireland?

In May 2009 Stephen Ireland was named Manchester City’s player of the year. Things are never plain sailing in football, with a new manager and change in personnel Ireland soon found himself struggling to make the first team. Since then, Ireland has moved to Aston Villa and like the end of his Manchester City career, playing time has been severely limited.

I feel slightly sorry for the Cork born star, Ireland only joined Aston Villa at the start of the season, after being included in the deal that took James Milner away from Villa to Manchester City. It would seem the midfielder has been farmed from club to club allowing little time to settle and regain the form he once had at Eastlands.

With a lack of opportunities at Villa, Speculation surrounding the club suggests that Aston Villa’s new manager Gerard Houllier is willing to allow Stephen Ireland to leave the club in January, providing him with the finances to personalise the team.

It would appear that Stephen Ireland is affected more so than others when it comes to change. Since the departure of Mark Hughes at Manchester City and his move to Villa, he has failed to hold down a first team place and has subsequently fallen down the pecking order at whatever club he found himself at.

With a long list of injuries at Villa, I found it surprising that a fit Ireland was overlooked as Houllier went for youth instead of tried and tested in the games against Fulham and Blackpool. This does not bode well for the 24 year old and would spell out that his days at Villa are numbered. However, Could another move resurrect the career of this talented individual?

It is believed that Ireland would quickly slip in to Roy Hodgson current Liverpool squad, and could make a spectacular partnership alongside captain Steven Gerrard in the Reds midfield. Hodgson has been vocal over his expected transfer activity in the January transfer window, and his desire to improve upon his current Liverpool squad.

Could a move to Anfield be just the ticket Ireland needs in order to regain the form he once enjoyed at Manchester City? Was his rich vein of form at Eastland just a flash in the pan? I guess only time will only tell.

‘Rock n Goal’ with Alistair Griffin

Taking on the Rock n Goal challenge this week is Middlesbrough fan and songsmith Alistair Griffin. He is of course the man behind the Mark Viduka song!

Ideal song for teams to walk out to?

The Power game… old school Ayresome Park walk out music. Or maybe currently Livin’ on A Prayer.

Who’s your football hero?

Slaven and Mowbray were the big ones, John Hendrie too.

Any celebrity football friends?

Doing Coast to Coast Charity bike ride with Craig Hignett in July, he’s a friend and although he’d never admit it, I think he secretly likes my music. Of course Gareth Southgate was a fan of the Viduka song!

Is it better being a rockstar or a footballe?

Well, I’d love to have been a footballer but I guess I’ll have to settle for being a rockstar. Given the wages I’d say footballer!

First match you went to see?

An odd one this, it was the Wilf Mannion Testamonial at Ayresome Park. I was about 4.

Which current player would you most like to have a pint with?

Cesc Fabregas.

England chance drives Agbonlahor

Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has been buoyed by recent words of encouragement from England coach Fabio Capello.

The 23-year-old was overlooked for World Cup duty by the Italian following a season where he scored 16 goals in 46 appearances for the Midlands club.

However, Agbonlahor was recently identified by Capello as one of the new breed of player he might turn to following England’s dismal performance in South Africa.

“It was nice to hear what Mr Capello said and it gives you a boost ahead of the new season,” said Agbonlahor, who was won three full England caps to date.

“But what I need to do is show him that I deserve it. I want to get off to a good start, have a good season and get back in the England squad.

“I’ve been involved before but missed out on the World Cup. It’s not easy for the manager, because he can only pick 23 players, but I want to get back amongst it.

“If you ask me and some of the other lads who didn’t get into the squad, you have to take a look at yourself and question if you did enough to make it.

England up to seventh in rankings

England have risen one place in FIFA's world rankings despite their World Cup debacle.

Fabio Capello's side have moved up to seventh in the world despite failing to make it past the round of 16 in South Africa.

The Three Lions were thrashed 4-1 by Germany in the second round after labouring through a group which included the United States, Algeria and Slovenia.

Elsewhere, Spain have replaced Brazil at the top of the rankings following their final victory over the Netherlands on Sunday.

Holland are up two places to second with Brazil – who only reached the quarter-finals despite being pre-tournament joint favourites with Spain – have slipped down to third.

France and Italy were the biggest losers after slipping 12 and six places to 21st and 11th respectively.

Both the 1998 and 2006 winners failed to qualify from their groups and have fallen dramatically in the rankings.

Meanwhile, Uruguay are the big winners after moving up ten places to an all-time high of sixth following their impressive run to the semi-finals.

New Zealand, who were the only team not to lose a game during the finals, have rocketed up the standings from 78th to 54th.Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email

Was Michael Owen really the worst of a bad bunch?

Newcastle’s track record of signings isn’t exactly the best, especially when Freddy Shepherd was running the club. He might have helped to bring Alan Shearer to Newcastle, but when he was Chairman from the mid ‘90s to 2007, he was also responsible for signing the cheques for Albert Luque, Marcelino and Jean-Alain Boumsong to name just a few Newcastle flops. However, with Manchester United due to travel to St James Park tomorrow, Shepherd said that Red Devils striker Michael Owen is the worst deal he’s ever done.

Speaking to the Sunday Sun, Shepherd said the Owen deal “was probably the worst deal I did at Newcastle. That is just being frank. We paid £16million and we didn’t get £16million worth of value out of him. And there was no added value off the pitch . . . the added value was nil off the pitch. I’m not having a go at the kid as he was fine when he got on the pitch. It was a nightmare from an injury perspective.”

Do you agree with Shepherd that Michael Owen was the worst signing he agreed when Chairman of Newcastle? There’s plenty of competition for that rather unfortunate accolade, as in addition to Luque, Marcelino and Boumsong, he also splashed the cash on Titus Bramble, Hugo Viana, Carl Cort; need I go on? But do you think that Owen was the worst of a bad bunch, or does another Newcastle flop go down as being an even worse signing than the England striker?
