According to Alasdair Gold of Football.London, a number of senior Tottenham players are unhappy about the lack of chances for Joe Rodon.

The Lowdown: Lack of centre-back options

Manager Antonio Conte’s footballing philosophy has long entailed the use of wing-backs who are given permission to bomb forward into the attacking third. As a result, the Italian utilises three central defenders to hold the backline together.

However, in recent times, a number of Spurs defenders have struggled. This was illustrated in Spurs’ 2-0 loss to Wolves at the weekend, as Ben Davies and Davinson Sanchez received 6.8/10 match ratings in the respective LCB and RCB positions.

With regular starters Eric Dier and Japhet Tanganga currently out injured, the 52-year-old only really has one other option, but he appears to be against it. That option would be Rodon.

The Latest: Players push Rodon claim

According to a report by Football.London, some of Tottenham’s senior players have been pushing Conte to play Rodon behind the scenes, given his ability to play anywhere across the back three, having been used as a left-sided centre-back at Swansea.

Alasdair Gold shared this news to Twitter, saying: “Senior Spurs players pushing the claims of Joe Rodon.”

The Verdict: Rodon not in Conte’s plans?

With Dier potentially returning from his thigh injury in time for Spurs’ weekend fixture against Manchester City, Rodon’s opportunity to make a first-team impression may simply cease to exist.

Cristian Romero is also fully fit and Davies still appears to be first choice on the left, leaving Rodon as a bench option at best.

Since his arrival in north London in 2020, the young Welshman has made just 22 appearances for the club. Only 13 of these have come in the Premier League, and the 24-year-old is yet to feature in the top-flight under Conte.

Despite being hailed as ‘flawless’ and a ‘special player’ by Welsh journalist Ian Mitchelmore, Rodon should be moved on this summer unless there are significant changes to how he is utilised within the squad.

After an under-strength and under-par Durham lost by an innings here last week, Hampshire came armed with their own set of extenuating circumstances as Michael Carberry joined their roster of absentees, thanks to his selection for the England Lions match against the touring Bangladeshis in Derby on Wednesday.Kabir Ali is out again because of knee trouble, Dimitri Mascarenhas is a couple of weeks from fitness after an Achilles injury, Simon Jones is not yet able to start and Ajantha Mendis, who was supposed to have arrived at the beginning of the season, is unlikely to appear before mid-July. Hardly any wonder, you might say, with such depleted bowling resources, that the pre-season forecasts of a lively Championship challenge are looking optimistic, although nobody, surely, was so pessimistic as to imagine four defeats in the first five matches.Yet Nottinghamshire are not without their problems. Their captain, Chris Read, might reasonably argue that four wins from their first four matches represents an achievement deserving of even greater applause given that Ryan Sidebottom and Stuart Broad have had one match each and nothing has been seen at all of Graeme Swann because of England duty.Add to that injuries to Darren Pattinson, Luke Fletcher and Andre Adams and a late start, after two winter operations, by Charlie Shreck and Read’s contention that his side have overcome difficult circumstances to lead the table is hard to oppose.They face another Test here, with Hashim Amla back with South Africa and Mark Wagh, the most reliable of their top-order batsmen, given time off to take law exams. What’s the story?

Amid David Ornstein’s claim on transfer deadline day that the Wales international is currently at a private airport terminal waiting to decide what club to join, Italian journalist Carlo Laudisa has revealed that the former Arsenal man is seemingly on his way to Ibrox.

Writing on Twitter, he said: “Destination Glasgow #Ramsey is finalizing the details for the i #Rangers loan. Now #Juve can negotiate the purchase of #Nandez from Cagliari.”

GVB will love him

While the Gers currently lead the way in the Scottish Premiership, one area of concern for manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst is really the lack of goals from outside of his forward players – both Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe have scored 23 goals between them, and the next top-scorer for the Ibrox side is full-back James Tavernier with six.

The best goal-scoring midfielder at the club currently is Joe Aribo who has also notched six, but he’s been more of a streaky player, going on a run of five games where he scored four goals back in November and December.

Ramsey meanwhile has been more of a consistent goal-threat when he’s actually been fit and available, and in his time at Arsenal in particular, was very elite in doing so – he broke double figures for goals in three out of his final four seasons with the club.

Hailed as an “outstanding technician”, the Welshman’s famed ability to time his runs into the box has earned him comparisons with Chelsea icon Frank Lampard – something that the Blues legend himself has previously spoken about.

Writing in a column for The Evening Standard about the 74-goal star: “It will probably come as no surprise to people that I like Ramsey. Like me, he makes late runs in the penalty area and he showed that with aplomb for the second goal at AC Milan last week.”

Given the Gers’ relative lack of goal-scoring punch from midfield, Ramsey’s arrival would certainly help to bring that, and Van Bronckhorst would surely love seeing him become a match-winner for them.

Wolves could still make a last-gasp move for Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey this month, according to a late transfer rumour which has emerged.

The Lowdown: Ramsey leaving Juve?

The Welshman has struggled to make his mark during his time in Italy, only registering six goals and six assists since arriving from Arsenal in 2019.

Juve are thought to be keen on offloading Ramsey before the January transfer window ends, and Wolves have been linked with a move in the recent past.

Leeds have also been backed to sign him, though, as a return to England for the rest of the season potentially comes to fruition.

The Latest: Wolves tipped to make late move for Ramsey

According to Calciomercato [via Sport Witness], Wolves’ move for Ramsey could ‘resolve’ itself at the 11th hour.

It is stated that ‘Jorge Mendes takes care of it’, suggesting that the agent could get a deal over the line for the 31-year-old, who has scored 20 goals in 71 caps for Wales.

The Verdict: Strong last-gasp addition

If Wolves sign Ramsey before deadline day ends, it could prove to be a bonus during an already positive month on the pitch at Molineux, following four wins in a row in all competitions.

While the Welsh midfielder arguably isn’t at his peak anymore, he has proven Premier League pedigree – 40 goals and 51 assists – and could complement the deeper-lying pair of Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves.

With Wolves looking to finish in the European places this season, Ramsey could add a sprinkling of stardust to provide more depth and quality in key matches between now and May.

The transfer window slams shut next week and Rangers have been relatively busy in the market as they have brought in two players and sold one from Ibrox for a club-record fee.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has signed James Sands and John Souttar, whilst selling Nathan Patterson north of the border too. He has also recalled striker Cedric Itten from his loan and reintegrated him into the first-team set-up.

In the last week or so of the window, the Gers may have some big decisions to make on players whose deals expire in July. One player who could be in trouble of being cut loose is Canadian midfielder Scott Arfield, with the 33-year-old’s contract up in the summer.

Axe him

Van Bronckhorst could jettison him from the squad this month or in the summer by bringing in a new player. He has missed a whopping five ‘big chances’ in the Premiership this season and lost 65% of his individual duels, whilst only creating 0.6 chances per game – as per SofaScore – and this suggests that it could be time for him to be axed.

One attacking midfielder who has been linked with a switch to the club is 18-year-old PSG youngster Xavi Simons.

He too is out of contract at the end of the season and this means that the Gers could replace Arfield without having to splash millions and millions in the transfer market. Instead, they could snap up the teenage Dutchman on a free and pay a nominal compensation fee via tribunal or through an agreement with PSG.

In doing so, they could land a terrific player for the future as Simons has shown immense potential in his fledgling career to date.

Football scout Jacek Kulig dubbed him as “phenomenal” earlier this season for his form in the academy side with the French giants. He has scored five goals and provided six assists in 13 appearances for the U19’s, showing off his quality at youth level.

This suggests that he is already too good to be playing reserve team football and that is emphasised by his first-team involvement in France this term. He has played four times for the Ligue 1 side this season, picking up one assist in those games.

His agent, Mino Raiola, previously stated that his client has a “big future” and PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino believes that he will mature with time, saying: “Xavi Simons? There is a big difference between the reserve and the first team. Xavi can play in different positions; as a torchbearer, he can also play on the side. Maturity comes with time; you have to take into account the leadership of the team and complementarities.”

Therefore, he could have the potential to improve further over the years and develop into a top player, which is why he could be a fantastic replacement for Arfield as the ex-Burnley man is nearing the end of his career.
