Faf du Plessis will lead South Africa in the three Twenty20 internationals against New Zealand in December. AB de Villiers, South Africa’s regular limited-overs captain, is part of the squad but won’t captain because his workload will be managed over the summer. The T20 squad has four new players, including a new wicketkeeper to relieve de Villiers of his burden. Quinton de Kock, who turns 20 on Monday and was part of South Africa’s most recent under-19 World Cup squad, will don the gloves.De Kock is seen as one of the options for a permanent wicketkeeper to replace Mark Boucher in all formats. “We need to find a long-term solution because ultimately we [want] to find a top-six batter in the mould of an Adam Gilchirst to do the job in Tests,” Andrew Hudson, convenor of selectors, told ESPNCricinfo.”AB may eventually end up batting No.4 in Tests, when Jacques Kallis is not around, and if he has to take on a more senior batting role, we will need someone else to keep. It will be nice to try Quinton out – he has shown glimpses of talent and we are going to have a look at him in the shorter versions. But, that’s not to say to the other keepers in the country that we have passed them by, the door is still very much open.”But it seems to have closed on Thami Tsolekile. Lions’ gloveman was nationally contracted in February and touted as Boucher’s replacement, but has not played since then. A source close to team management said Tsolekile would be given a run against New Zealand, but the selectors have decided otherwise. He travelled to England and Australia but was left out of the Test squad, which was also named today.Despite all indications to the contrary, Hudson said Tsolekile remains in the plans. “He has not fallen out of favour. If anything were to happen to AB, he will play.” De Villiers has had a history of lower-back problems which recurred after the England series in August, but he has declared himself fully fit.South Africa squads

Twenty20 squad: Faf du Plessis (capt), Farhaan Behardien, Henry Davids, Quinton de Kock, AB de Villiers, Rory Kleinveldt, Richard Levi, David Miller, Morne Morkel, Chris Morris, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Aaron Phangiso, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

Test squad: Graeme Smith (capt), Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis, Dean Elgar, Jacques Kallis, Rory Kleinveldt, Morne Morkel, Alviro Petersen, Robin Peterson, Vernon Philander, Jacques Rudolph, Dale Steyn.

He played for Titans in their one-day cup playoff match on Sunday, and although he admitted to being “a bit stiff,” he maintained that he experienced no pain. In fact, he said being in the field in that match (Heino Kuhn had the gloves) was harder on his body than wicketkeeping. He will have to embrace fielding in the shorter formats though, with de Kock set to take over that role as part of a more youthful T20 squad. Richard Levi has been retained in the squad but with Hashim Amla rested, could open the batting with du Plessis or new-comer Henry Davids. The Titans limited-overs captain made a name for himself during the Champions League T20 as an aggressive batsman and is second on the one-day cup batting charts. The CLT20 also shone a spotlight on left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso. He finished as the joint second highest wicket-taker and bowled miserly spells for the Lions. Phangiso has been picked as an additional slow-bowling option to Robin Peterson. Johan Botha, who has relocated to Australia, was not considered for selection. The Lions reached the final of the Champions League Twenty20, and will also play in the final of the one-day cup, so it’s no surprise that their players are getting recognition. Allrounder Chris Morris, who travelled with the South African squad for the unofficial T20 tri-series in Zimbabwe in June, is also part of the national squad. Morris, also a big hitter, has bowled consistently in the mid-140kph this season and is the only fast-bowling all-rounder in the squad.Wayne Parnell, who has been working on his batting, is also in the squad along with fellow left-arm seamer Lonwabo Tsotsobe. There has been a recall for middle-order batsman David Miller in the absence of the injured JP Duminy.Hudson said South Africa will use the series against New Zealand to concentrate on their combinations, with an eye on the 2014 World Twenty20. “The mix is going to be key. There will be some of the older players that maybe we will move on from. Going into the tournament in two years’ time, we want to have a mix of core and some youngsters. We need some flair and we need to bring something different to the party as opposed to just a regular side,” he said. The Test squad, though, is focused on consistency, with the same squad that defeated Australia in Perth retained for the two fixtures against New Zealand. Jacques Rudolph, who was dropped for the final match, has been picked but is unlikely to play. “We will probably look to play Dean [Elgar] and Jacques is the reserve batsman,” Hudson said. The only casualty besides Tsolekile is legspinner Imran Tahir, whose performance in Adelaide has left him needing to do some soul searching. Tahir finished with figures of 0 for 260, the most expensive figures without a wicket in Test history and was replaced with Robin Peterson, who took six wickets in Perth. “Robbie has just gone ahead of Imran, but he remains part of our plans in future,” Hudson said.South Africa have two injury concerns. Jacques Kallis is recovering from a hamstring strain, but is expected to be fit to play in the Tests as an allrounder, and Graeme Smith has bruising on his elbow. Smith was hit in the nets in the lead-up to the one-day cup playoff and will not be fit to play in the final for the Cobras, but the team management is confident he will be ready for the New Year’s Test.

Former BCB president says constitution change 'unethical'

Former BCB president Saber Hossain Chowdhury has termed the changes made to the board’s constitution “undemocratic and unethical”

Mohammad Isam18-Dec-2012

Saber Hossain Chowdhary: “From what I know of the NSC Act, it contradicts to how the amendments were made. As far as I know, the BCB adhoc committee hasn’t discussed these changes.”•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Former Bangladesh Cricket Board president Saber Hossain Chowdhury has termed the changes made to the board’s constitution “undemocratic and unethical” and has questioned the procedures followed by the board for making the amendments. One of the main issues under the latest amendments made by the National Sports Council, the regulatory body for all sports federations in Bangladesh, is that the BCB president will be elected by the directors instead of the councilors (members of various clubs, districts, divisions, certain institutions and former players who hold voting rights in BCB elections). The change is a complete U-turn from the March amendment in which the BCB had given voting rights to the councilors after an ICC directive had asked for lesser government interference.Secondly, the NSC increased the number of councilorships from the top six Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League clubs from one to two to justify the amount of money spent by the clubs during the league. This would make the BCB more Dhaka-centric rather than decentralised as it would give even more power to the clubs from the capital. The third major change was at the district and division level where anyone, even from outside the district or divisional sports association’s executive committee, can now become a councilor. Previously, a district councilor needed a minimum of three years experience in the executive body of his/her district. On December 13, the Dhaka High Court gave a stay order of three months on the amended BCB constitution, which means the board has to be run under the 2008 charter.Chowdhury was a pivotal figure in the country’s cricket between 1996 and 2001 when Bangladesh won the ICC Trophy, were given ODI and Test status and held a global event and his criticism is a sign of major unease about the conflict-ridden BCB that is now run by an adhoc committee instead of an elected body.”It is a matter of concern to see such divisions in Bangladesh cricket,” Chowdhury said. “I don’t want to pick any of these sides, be it districts, clubs or players. We should be speaking on behalf of cricket.”First of all, it is not clear what recommendations were considered when these changes to constitution were made. Secondly, we also have to know what process was used. When a higher body makes such amendments, it cannot just be made for the sake of it. The amendment has to come through a reference point. What I’m trying to understand is whether these changes were sought by the BCB or the NSC.”From what I know of the NSC Act, it contradicts to how the amendments were made. As far as I know, the BCB adhoc committee hasn’t discussed these changes.”Over the past weekend, the club representatives and those from the districts as well as the players’ body have all commented on the amended constitution in a series of press briefings in Dhaka. The BCB has remained quiet about the matter. Chowdhury criticised this silence and asked the BCB to take the lead in correcting the wrongs.”The cricket board has to take a stance, say whether they support the changes that have been made to the constitution. It is important to know their position because the BCB is the governing body.”Everyone who will be affected by these changes are speaking about it, whether that be criticism or appreciation. But the BCB is quiet,” he said.He also pointed out the lack of clarity when it comes to following a modus operandi of running the BCB. “Ever since we wrote up the model constitution in 1998, it has been like a pendulum where we are swinging from a board of directors to an executive committee system and back to the board of directors.”Chowdhury said that the BCB should not have governmental intervention because it’s a strong enough body, especially through its wealth. “The changes are establishing political influence in cricket. If the government had helped the BCB financially, it would have had a say.”But the BCB has more money in the bank than the NSC probably, so I don’t see a reason for the government to have an influence. I am not a believer of making these changes because the ICC has said so. I want political influence out because it is the right thing to do.”

Burden-free Yardy gives Sussex edge

Michael Yardy scored 89 as Sussex established a first-innings lead of more than 100 against Middlesex before taking two late wickets

Change your captain, change your luck? Well, to be fair, things were going quite nicely for Sussex before Mike Yardy decided to hand the Championship reins to Ed Joyce a fortnight ago but both men seem to have benefitted significantly from the switch.Joyce, having scored 107 during last week’s win against Worcestershire, gave his team a sound base in this match by making 68 at the top of the order. And Yardy, who announced that he wished to concentrate on his own game, ended an indifferent run of four-day form with an excellent innings of 89.Yardy had passed 50 on only a couple of occasions in Championship cricket since hitting 110 against Lancashire back in April but here he looked all set for three figures – and would have deserved them on a still-tricky pitch – until miscuing a pull into the hands of long leg.Although the former England player’s unexpected departure, seventh out with the total 238, put something of a dent in Sussex’s plans to post a truly commanding total, they were still able to reach 287 – despite a career-best 6 for 66 from Toby Roland-Jones. That gave the hosts a first-innings lead of 117, an advantage which ought to prove decisive as they seek to take over second place in the table behind title favourites Warwickshire. There is nothing particularly pretty about Yardy’s batting style, at least not when he sets up with his splayed feet stance. But the left-hander can be mighty effective, and was so on Saturday as he punished Middlesex whenever they fed his strong leg-side play or offered him a bit too much width outside off stump. No batsman has been able to operate with complete freedom (although Chris Rogers tried to late on when he gave Middlesex a flying start) because the odd ball continued to lift quite alarmingly from a good length. Ollie Rayner suffered most, in terms of pain, on Friday when hit on the left hand by a delivery from James Anyon. Today it was Joyce who had to call for the magic spray after one from Roland-Jones reared to locate the opener’s rib cage.Another snorter from Roland-Jones, soon after, did Joyce no physical damage but brought about his downfall, leaping to hit a glove and present keeper John Simpson with a simple, lobbed catch. That breakthrough ended a stand of 78 for the fourth wicket, the highest partnership of the match so far, and came at a time when Middlesex were still hopeful of limiting the first innings damage to around 50.Unfortunately for the visitors, they cannot quite match Sussex for pace and bounce. But in Roland-Jones they possessed a constant threat and it was only fitting that the 24-year-old, who is already on England’s radar, returned the county’s best bowling analysis of the season. The wicket of Yardy, who had concentrated hard for four and half hours, was a bit of a gift. But the youngster worked hard for his other successes, and had to contend with the likes of Steve Magoffin and Anyon scoring valuable runs down the order for the second consecutive match. When Middlesex set about trying to clear the arrears, Rogers looked like a man in a hurry but although his 48 came from only 53 balls he was living dangerously and it came as no great surprise when Monty Panesar had him caught behind. Joe Denly soon played on, to Magoffin, and the same bowler then saw nightwatchman Roland-Jones dropped by Chris Nash at short leg just before the close. It is not game over, by any means, with Middlesex only 25 behind and eight wickets in hand. But it is certainly game on for Sussex as they try to continue their impressive rise up the table.

Enthralling contest cut short by storm

Those arriving at Aigburth early will have witnessed a duel good enough to compensate for the later frustration

There may have been little for cricket fans to appreciate on a final day decimated by rain, but those arriving at Aigburth early will have witnessed a duel good enough to compensate for the later frustration. Two county captains, standing toe to toe, attempting to carry their respective sides to victory, provided an enthralling distraction from a disappointing result for both sides.Lancashire and Somerset both began the final day with hopes of securing a victory that would significantly lift their hopes at either end of the division one table. The key confrontation in settling the outcome would be the ability of Marcus Trescothick, Somerset’s outstanding batsman, against Glen Chapple, Lancashire’s ever-green seamer with more than 800 first class victims in his career.Their battle within the game lasted only 10 overs this morning as Somerset resumed on 22 for 1 needing a further 257 runs for victory. It should have set the scene for a compelling contest only for a lunch-time thunder-storm to end play with the game balanced after Somerset reached 93 for 3 with a minimum of 64 more overs in the day.In the end Chapple won their confrontation, securing an lbw appeal with a ball that kept low mid-way through an outstanding eight-over spell from the River End. Trescothick departed for only 27, although he had clearly relished the intensity of a contest that he has encountered all too rarely since problems with depression forced his retirement from international cricket in 2008.”It was really competitive, which is just what you want in county cricket,” admitted Trescothick. “It was two good players going at it and working hard for their individual teams. We are both captains of our clubs and we have to do our best. That’s what you thrive on, that’s the challenge you miss from international cricket and it’s great to get it in county cricket.”Chapple thought he had claimed Trescothick’s scalp in the fourth over of the day, inducing an edge which Paul Horton failed to hold above his head at first slip. Glaring at his Somerset rival in frustration, Chapple trudged back to his mark to try again. There was little doubt Trescothick was the wicket Lancashire craved most, judging by an over-enthusiastic appeal for a catch behind in Chapple’s next over. Trescothick stood in his crease, defiantly, while umpire Peter Hartley remained un-moved. The Lancashire captain succeeded on his third attempt when uneven bounce beat Trescothick’s outstanding hand-eye co-ordination and appeared to deal a serious blow to Somerset’s desire to chase down their target. That was further undermined when James Hildreth edged Kyle Hogg and Andrea Agathangelou dived from second slip to take the catch. The composure shown in the remaining 13 overs before lunch by Nick Compton, county cricket’s leading run-scorer, and Craig Kieswetter only served to heighten the anticipation for the remainder of the day.The weather intervened, leaving Somerset still behind Warwickshire, Nottinghamshire and Sussex in the race for the title, while Lancashire are only nine points ahead of the relegation places having played more matches that Worcestershire and Durham, who occupy the bottom two places in the division.”It’s been a pretty hard fought game all the way through,” said Trescothick. “It was evenly poised although it may have been more in their favour than ours with the scoring rates in the game, but who knows what could have happened if we’d have got a partnership together?”Peter Moores, Lancashire’s coach, was equally frustrated at being thwarted in their attempt to claim an all too rare victory this summer, but knows he has issues to address in the batting line-up. Dismissed for 63 against Worcestershire in the previous match, they slumped to 50 for 6 until Ashwell Prince’s brilliant century turned this match around.”We need people in form. We have had a bit of a strange season, we have had people playing well but not always turning that into runs,” Moores said. “That is something we have talked to the players about. There has to be a steel about them to turn that form into runs when they are playing well.”The lads are very determined. They know we need runs at the top of the order to put sides under pressure. There is a quality in the side. We haven’t finished in the top four of the Championship in the last three years without having decent players who play well under pressure.”

Gayle formally recalled to West Indies squad

Chris Gayle’s 15-month international exile is over after he was formally recalled to the West Indies ODI squad for the forthcoming series against England, due to begin at Southampton on June 16

Chris Gayle’s 15-month international exile is over after he was formally recalled to the West Indies ODI squad for the forthcoming series against England, starting in Southampton on June 16.In keeping with the fractious and drawn out nature of the dispute that kept Gayle out of the team, his recall was confirmed after a meeting of more political than selection nature in St Vincent. Gayle and the West Indies Players’ Association chief executive*, Michael Hall, spoke with an array of political and cricket figures including the island’s prime minister Ralph Gonsalves, Antigua and Barbuda prime minister Baldwin Spencer, WICB president Julian Hunte, WICB director Elson Crick and the WICB’s legal officer Alanna Medford. The meeting, devised to smooth over any “residual matters” between Gayle and the WICB, was followed by the announcement of the squad for the limited-overs segment of the England tour, with Gayle returning to the ranks for the first time since the 2011 World Cup.West Indies’ ODI squad

“Directors of the West Indies Cricket Board recently met by teleconference and are pleased that consistent with his previous commitment Mr Chris Gayle has made himself available for selection to the West Indies team,” a WICB statement had said of the meeting. “The board believes that Mr Gayle’s stated commitment to West Indies cricket will be an asset to the team and looks forward to his contributions in that regard.”Gayle’s recall was first mooted during West Indies’ earlier home series against Australia, when he met with WICB officials to repair a relationship that had deteriorated around the emergence of Twenty20 and the rise of the Indian Premier League. It then dissolved entirely when the former captain criticised the coach Ottis Gibson and the WICB during a radio interview last year.In England the mood for Gayle’s return has gathered strength, pushed along by the words of Kevin Pietersen, who said it would be “brilliant for the game” if he was recalled, while the former West Indies fast bowler and widely respected commentator Michael Holding effectively challenged the WICB to stop delaying Gayle’s rehabilitation as an international player.Lendl Simmons is the other notable recall to the ODI team after he missed the home matches against Australia. Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell also return to the team for limited-overs matches after completing their IPL duties.*15:44 GMT, June 5: The article had qualified Michael Hall as Chris Gayle’s agent.
