The England performance programme (EPP) squad travel to India next month and director David Parsons hopes to use the trip to enhance the players’ skills on the subcontinent.Batsman, spin bowlers and wicketkeepers will attend a training camp in Pune and Mumbai ahead of selection for the England Lions tours of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in 2012. Parsons believes the trip will provide vital experience for England’s rising stars.”India, statistically if you speak to any past England player, is the most difficult place to go and win,” Parsons told the ECB website. “Obviously, England haven’t got a great record out there in recent years, so we thought that would be a good place to go.”The trip follows England’s 5-0 defeat in the one-day series in India during October and poor performance at the World Cup in March, hosted in the subcontinent, which ended in a 10-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka in the quarter-final.Test captain Andrew Strauss will be among three senior England players joining the training camps ahead of England’s Test series against Pakistan in January.Matt Prior and Eoin Morgan, who has spent the last two months recovering from a shoulder injury which ruled him out of the India trip, will also travel with the EPP squad to begin acclimatisation for the tour to UAE.”The density of population, the traffic, the heat, the humidity; the types of pitches they will be playing on and the stadiums will be very unfamiliar to players,” said Parsons, “We want to give more familiarity with that environment. There will be a heavy emphasis on skills development from both the spin bowlers’ perspective and the batsmen perspective as well. To be effective, especially against spin, is an area where we haven’t been particularly strong.”The EPP squad includes several players who have been involved with senior England teams. Jonny Bairstow, who was part of the England team that lost in India last month; Alex Hales, the Nottinghamshire batsman with four Twenty20 caps; and James Taylor, who is set for a move from Leicestershire to Nottinghamshire, are all in the squad.

Andrew (goleiro do time sub-17) estava no banco, e se dedica bastante.

Australia act on player drain with 'Robson rule'

Cricket Australia approved regulatory changes that will allow dual passport holders to play domestic matches in more than one country

European football had Bosman transfers, English cricket has Kolpak players, and now Australia has passed the Sam Robson rule. At a board meeting on Friday, Cricket Australia approved regulatory changes that will allow dual passport holders to play domestic matches in more than one country. This has effectively freed Robson from having to choose between New South Wales and Middlesex, allowing him to represent both as England and Australia compete for his international loyalties. The player is not thought to have made any written guarantees to England that he will commit his international future to them.It was not only Robson who had a new future opened up for him by the changes, as numerous cricketers who had given up their first-class careers in Australia to play as locals in England are once more eligible to play in the Sheffield Shield, limited overs and Big Bash League competitions. These include the West Australian seam bowler Michael Hogan the NSW batsman Phil Jaques and the Queensland teenager Sam Hain, who joined Warwickshire this year.”The Board has endorsed changes to the definition of an Overseas Player for Australian domestic competitions,” a CA spokesman said. “The changes are designed to allow Australian players who have dual passports to play in more than one domestic competition. CA wants as many quality cricketers playing in its domestic competitions as possible. These changes will allow Australian players with dual passports to play first-class cricket in more than one country.”A number of Australian-qualified cricketers currently playing in ECB competitions in particular are doing so as a local player, meaning if they play in Australia during the summer they need to do so as an overseas player to retain their ECB eligibility. However, CA’s current overseas player definition prevents someone born in Australia, or holding a valid Australian passport, from qualifying to play here as an overseas player.”Changes approved today will ensure state associations and BBL teams will be able recruit Australian players without them having to give up their eligibility to play overseas as a local player. It will remove the burden on these players to choose which domestic competition to play in.”Robson, whose mother hails from Nottingham, previously could not be chosen for New South Wales as a domestic player because although he was born in Australia he played county cricket on a British passport. While the changes have greatly enhanced Australia’s chances of being able to consider Robson in the future, England may also be able to offer him a chance to play first-class matches during the forthcoming southern summer. An outside chance to be named as a reserve opening batsman in the Ashes squad proper, Robson would be a likely choice for the England Lions squad scheduled to shadow the Test touring party over the course of the series.Alternatively, Robson may now head home to Sydney at the conclusion of the English summer and turn out first for the Blues’ Futures League team, and from there earn selection in the NSW Shield XI for the start of the season. In past seasons he has simply played club cricket while ineligible for first-class duty, but given Australia’s current lack of strong batting stock Robson would need only to replicate his consistent scoring for Middlesex to quickly enter international contention.England’s national team has benefitted considerably from the lure of their professional circuit, particularly to South African players who have gone on to qualify for England. The flood of Kolpak players, who are allowed to play county cricket under European Community free labour regulations, has been reduced, however, after a ruling in 2008 enabled the Home Office to introduce a four-year work-permit qualification on players outside the EU.

India A pacers secure comprehensive win

Six wickets between the fast bowlers Ishwar Pandey and Mohammed Shami helped India A beat South Africa A by an innings and 13 runs in the first unofficial Test in Rustenburg

Six wickets between the fast bowlers Ishwar Pandey and Mohammed Shami helped India A beat South Africa A by an innings and 13 runs in the first unofficial Test in Rustenburg, as a fighting 65 from Temba Bavuma went in vain.South Africa A resumed their first innings on 312 for 9 and frustrated the Indian bowlers, as Kyle Abbott and Andrew Birch added another 45. Suresh Raina eventually trapped Birch in front to end the innings on 357, 76 short of the follow-on target.Cheteshwar Pujara asked South Africa to bat again and his decision was immediately vindicated, as Pandey, who had claimed 4 for 46 in the first innings, bowled Reeza Hendricks off the third ball of the innings. Shami dismissed both Dean Elgar and first innings top-scorer JP Duminy in the sixth over to leave the hosts on 15 for 3 and staring at a deficit of 210.Rilee Rossouw continued his counterattacking ways, taking three fours off Shami in the 10th over. But as in the first innings, he failed to capitalise on his start as Raina bowled him for 34.South Africa resisted through Bavuma who, having departed for a duck in the first innings, produced a gritty half-century. Justin Ontong and Thami Tsolekile were stopped in their tracks as Shami and Pandey returned for their second spells.Ontong struck two fours off Shami in the 25th over before his stumps were disturbed and Tsolekile lost his to Pandey in the 35th. Wayne Parnell holed out to Shikhar Dhawan at deep midwicket off left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem, to leave South Africa A on 140 for 7.Bavuma soldiered on, collecting two fours off the 44th over from Nadeem to reach his fifty but pulled Rohit Sharma’s first delivery of the innings to midwicket. Rohit also induced the edge from Abbott to the wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha after ten overs of further resistance and finished with 2 for 19 in eight overs, to go with his century from the first innings. Pandey bowled Birch in the 67th over to end with match figures of 7 for 71.Pujara, named the Man of the Match for his 137 in the first innings, lauded the efforts of his bowlers. “If you want to win a Test match you have to get 20 wickets and to do that in two days in these conditions is fantastic,” Pujara said. “Our experience of playing in Indian conditions where you get similar wickets to this one has helped. Normally the wickets are flat and the bowlers are made to work hard for their wickets and that experience shone through today.”South Africa A coach Vincent Barnes said his players had learnt a lot from the match despite the defeat. “I tell the players that these are the type of conditions you are going to play in most of the time and you have to have the game plan and the skills for it,” Barnes said. “That is what international cricket is about, a few of the guys stepped up, some stuck in and batted well to get us into a good position, especially in the first innings.”At the end of the day these tough conditions give me an idea of the character of the players under situations like this,” he said. “If they got 590 and we scored 480 we would walk off learning very little about ourselves and the game. There is a lot that we have learnt, I think the players understood that they are playing against world-class opposition and it was tough.”The teams will square off in Pretoria for the second and final unofficial Test starting on August 24.

Jeff Stelling rejoices after VAR saves Wolves’ skin

Wolves managed to grab a win against Southampton on Saturday, but in previous years they’d have had to settle for a draw.

The Midlands club were almost denied a penalty in the second half, but VAR came to their rescue and awarded the spot-kick.

It wasn’t just the away fans at St Mary’s who were relieved by the call either as Jeff Stelling rejoiced when the decision finally went in Wolves’ favour.

What’s been said then?

The Sky Sports pundit was pleased to see justice served after the initial decision went against Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

“It’s a penalty all ends up,” Stelling said on Gillette Soccer Saturday (18/1/20 4:20PM).

“Darren England in his first Premier League game has got this horribly wrong, but he’s going to be pulled out by Craig Pawson the VAR, who must give a penalty.

“It’s 100 per cent a penalty, but let’s see what happens they’re still looking at it.”

The penalty was then given, and Stelling rejoiced:

“It is going to be a penalty, he’s got it wrong in his first game, and VAR has done its job, I was always a fan.”

Good side of VAR

Wolves fans have had plenty of complaints about VAR this term as they’ve been on the wrong end of decisions time after time, but this shows what can happen when it rules in your favour.

The Europa League contenders could have been denied two vital points on Saturday if VAR wasn’t present, and this is exactly what it was brought in for.

It wasn’t a dodgy handball or a marginal offside, but a blatant penalty that wasn’t initially given is the type of refereeing error that the video assistant should be putting right.

VAR isn’t the most popular innovation around Wolverhampton, but it did them a real favour on Saturday afternoon.

In other news, Wolves may have to adapt their transfer plans after this injury blow.
