Half-centuries from Andre Fletcher, Keddy Lesporis and Devon Smith set up a five-wicket win for Windwards Islands over Jamaica in the Regional Super50 semi-final in Bridgetown. Windwards will play Combined Campuses and Colleges in the final on April 21.Set a target of 243, Windwards lost a wicket in the second over, but consolidated with a 78-run second-wicket stand between Smith and Tyrone Theophile. Smith contributed a 44-ball 59 to the partnership, hitting ten fours in his innings. The Windwards innings slowed down once Smith was dismissed but picked up once again when Fletcher and Lesporis came together at the crease. The pair added 91 runs for the fourth wicket in 131 balls and by the time Fletcher was dismissed for 68 in the 42nd over, Windwards needed 48 off the last eight overs. Lesporis and captain Liam Sebastien shared a brisk 41-run stand before Sebastien steered the side to a win in the 49th over. Fletcher’s 81-ball 68 included five fours, while Lesporis scored 61 off 91 balls, with four fours and a six.Jamaica, who chose to bat first, failed to capitalise on a 166-run second-wicket partnership between Brenton Parchment and Nkrumah Bonner. The pair took Jamaica from 3 for 1 to 169 for 1, before Bonner was out in the37th over. Their half-centuries had given Jamaica a launching pad for a big score but the rest of the batting line-up failed to contribute as Jamaica lost seven wickets for 63 runs. David Bernard struck an unbeaten 32 off 29 balls but lacked the support needed to push Jamaica towards a large total.

South Africa exit after narrow defeat

An attacking knock of 75 from Stafanie Taylor led West Indies to an important two-wicket win against South Africa in Cuttack

An attacking knock of 75 from Stafanie Taylor led West Indies to a tight two-wicket win which eliminated South Africa from the competition.South Africa didn’t carry over any points from the first round, and the defeat leaves them on zero points with only two matches to play. With Australia already on six points, and New Zealand and West Indies on four and still to face each other, South Africa have no chance of making it to the final. The victory was also important for West Indies as their two remaining matches are against tough opponents in Australia and New Zealand. Defeat against South Africa would have meant that they had to win both those matches and hope for other results to go their way to qualify for the final.West Indies were set a target of 231, and Taylor came to the middle at the fall of the first wicket in the second over. She departed in the 26th, after guiding West Indies to a position of control at 146 for 3. Regular wickets thereafter pegged them back, but the lower order held their nerve to clinch victory.South Africa, after choosing to bat, played steadily for much of their innings, building on the solid start given by opener Trisha Chetty and the captain Mignon du Preez. Middle-order batsman Cri-zelda Brits slammed 44 off 41 and Dane van Niekerk hit 33 off 30 as South Africa took 90 off the final 12.3 overs.West Indies, on the contrary, maintained a high run-rate from the outset. Only as they came close to the target did the wickets slow them down. Besides Taylor, Kycia Knight, Shemaine Campbelle and Deandra Dottin all contributed significantly in the chase.West Indies captain Merissa Aguilleira was delighted with the start to the Super Sixes. “We have no room to make any mistakes in the Super Sixes,” she said. “We really have to be on top of our game, so we knew we had to start well. We could have won with more wickets in hand but there are areas we need to work on.”She also praised her batsmen for getting the job done when facing a stiff target. “I must say they got 60 runs too much, we were a little bit slack on the field. Yes the batters put down their heads and did what they were supposed to do. The ball kept low at times but overall we did a good job. We have been faltering a bit with the batting.”South Africa’s captain du Preez thought her team had put enough runs on the board. “We thought 230 was a lot of runs on this wicket,” she said. “None of us have scored on this wicket so far, so I thought we had a good chance but we faltered in the bowling department.”In a tight match, they bowled 18 wides and conceded a total of 25 extras. “We have been bowling quite a lot of extras, we can’t afford to do that. We have to work on that going into the next game. I think a few misfields here and there added a bit of pressure on us. I don’t think inexperience was the reason why we couldn’t pull through in the end.”

Dhoni helps India draw level with crushing win

MS Dhoni led the way with the bat and in the field as India condemned England to a 127-run defeat to make it 1-1 in the five-match series

The Report by David Hopps15-Jan-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMS Dhoni fired India to a total that proved far too good for England•BCCI

Kochi, in tourist terms at least, is the gateway to the backwaters but India, 1-0 down in the ODI series with four to play, were in no mood to take that journey. MS Dhoni, impassioned not just with the bat but just as strikingly in every aspect of his captaincy, made that abundantly clear with every muscle flexed and every order barked and it was England who were sunk without trace in a 127-run defeat.England’s pursuit of 286 always looked a daunting task and it became an improbable one from the moment that Bhuvneshwar Kumar removed Kevin Pietersen and Eoin Morgan in the space of three balls in an outstanding new-ball spell. There is nothing like a humid evening in Kochi to perk up a swing bowler and Bhuvneshwar, a 22-year-old from Uttar Pradesh playing in only his fifth ODI, also summoned impressive stamina as Dhoni ran his 10-over spell through without interruption and was rewarded with his best international figures of 3 for 29.But the match had swung India’s way much earlier than that – and it was Dhoni, a captain deemed to be under pressure, and Ravindra Jadeja who were at the heart of it. England had sensed they held an element of control, at the very least, for much of India’s innings but 108 runs from the last 10 overs, 68 from the last five, shook that notion to the core.As so often, Dhoni was left to plot a route to victory, wresting control from England’s attack with 72 from 66 balls. He creates his own virtuous circle, creating a febrile atmosphere and then feeding off it, in turn causing a crowd of around 70,000 to roar with even greater intensity. He fell four balls from the end of the innings when he sliced Dernbach to Joe Root at deep cover – a suitable end because Dernbach’s unwavering policy of bowling wide to him outside off stump had been England’s most effective counter.India approached the last 10 overs in unconvincing shape, at 177 for 5, having been confounded in the batting Powerplay by the variations of Dernbach and Steven Finn, which conceded only 21 runs in five overs and dismissed their batting mainstay, Suresh Raina, in the process.Dhoni had failed to manage India’s run chase in Rajkot, holing out at long-off against Dernbach’s slower ball. He received a near-replica in the closing overs but this time his hands were fast and his brain quicksilver and he muscled it well beyond the boundary rope. It was a statement about how things would be different this time. What Dhoni stirred, Jadeja delivered, rounding things off by taking 14 from Dernbach’s last three deliveries to finish with an unbeaten 61 from 37 balls. They were impressive statistics for a batsman who had been overshadowed until the last. As for Dernbach, for all his relative success against Dhoni, he still spilled 73 from nine overs.Smart stats

The margin of victory – 127 runs – is the second-highest for India in ODIs against England.

England’s score of 158 is their third-lowest all-out total in ODIs against India.

India’s Nos. 5, 6 and 7 all scored half-centuries, only the fifth time this has ever happened in ODIs, and the first such instance for India.

The 96-run stand between MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja came at a run-rate of 9.60 per over, the fourth-best rate for a 50-plus stand for India against England. The top three such stands for the sixth wicket for India versus England all involve Dhoni and Jadeja.

Jadeja’s strike rate of 164.86 (61 off 37 balls) is the fourth-highest for a 50-plus score by an Indian against England.

Since the 2011 World Cup, Dhoni has averaged 83.28 at a strike rate of 92.39, with 11 fifty-plus scores in 27 innings.

Dhoni averages 57.78 in 118 ODI innings as captain. His average is the highest among captains who’ve batted at least 15 innings.

For Chris Woakes, who was playing his first ODI in India after his late inclusion for the injured Tim Bresnan, it was an examination far beyond anything he had ever experienced. He thought he had Dhoni caught at the wicket when he had made 6 from nine balls but it was impossible for the umpire Vineet Kulkarni to hear a nick in such a din and normal-speed TV replays, which were all that were shown, made things no clearer.Raina had made 55 from 78 balls before he dragged on a pull at Finn and departed bashing the peak of his helmet with his bat in frustration, just as Virat Kohil had done earlier when he flayed Woakes to the cover boundary. Raina prospered primarily against the offspin of James Tredwell, two slog sweeps for six representing the highlight of his innings, and ensured that Tredwell, who took four wickets in the opening ODI in Rajkot, did not repeat the mayhem. As for England’s bonus allrounder in the opening match, Joe Root, who bowled nine overs relatively unscathed, there was no encore.India’s opening pair did not survive long, Gautam Gambhir and Ajinkya Rahane both departing by the fifth over. Finn and Dernbach, also impressive with the new ball, had clamoured for several lbw appeals before they prospered by hitting the stumps.Dernbach’s nip-backer to bowl Gambhir through the gate was a delivery made to order. There are few more productive, or less convincing, shots in ODIs than Gambhir’s dab through gully for four, bat hanging away from his body and he had played it the previous ball much to the bowler’s frustration. The ball that cut back was the classic retort. Finn also brought a delivery back in his next over, late inswing accounting for Rahane as he shuffled across his crease.India’s frustration grew when Yuvraj Singh fell to an erroneous lbw decision by Steve Davis, who did not see – and, like Kulkarni in the case of Dhoni, certainly could not hear in such a deafening atmosphere – a deflection off the glove as he swept at Tredwell. With no DRS in use, Yuvraj had to take his punishment, although he did not do so without a stray comment or two.So, for that matter, did Alastair Cook in England’s reply, with Bhuvneshwar fortunate to win an lbw decision with a delivery that pitched outside leg stump. Cook should have been run out on 17 when Jadeja failed to pick up cleanly at midwicket to take advantage of complete confusion between Pietersen and Cook over a leg-side single. Dhoni’s annoyance was clear, but Bhuvneshwar’s eighth over had an impact on the course of the match and the captain’s mood.First Pietersen (42 from 44 balls) was bowled by one that jagged back as he sought to run into the off side and two balls later Bhuvneshwar found movement away from the left-handed Morgan from a good length and Dhoni dived to claim one his finest catches against England this winter, in what has been a somewhat troubled wicketkeeping sequence.England, four down for 74 by the 17th over, had much rebuilding to do. But the ball turned for India’s spinners and it was jerry-built stuff. Craig Kieswetter and Joe Root assessed a while then both got out, Kieswetter unimpressively as he pushed a short ball from R Ashwin to midwicket, Root sliced apart by Jadeja’s arm ball. Woakes’ managed a second-ball duck – another Jadeja arm ball to enhance his excellent match -and England’s tail quickly subsided, in no doubt about the extent of the challenge ahead.

Former BCB president says constitution change 'unethical'

Former BCB president Saber Hossain Chowdhury has termed the changes made to the board’s constitution “undemocratic and unethical”

Mohammad Isam18-Dec-2012

Saber Hossain Chowdhary: “From what I know of the NSC Act, it contradicts to how the amendments were made. As far as I know, the BCB adhoc committee hasn’t discussed these changes.”•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Former Bangladesh Cricket Board president Saber Hossain Chowdhury has termed the changes made to the board’s constitution “undemocratic and unethical” and has questioned the procedures followed by the board for making the amendments. One of the main issues under the latest amendments made by the National Sports Council, the regulatory body for all sports federations in Bangladesh, is that the BCB president will be elected by the directors instead of the councilors (members of various clubs, districts, divisions, certain institutions and former players who hold voting rights in BCB elections). The change is a complete U-turn from the March amendment in which the BCB had given voting rights to the councilors after an ICC directive had asked for lesser government interference.Secondly, the NSC increased the number of councilorships from the top six Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League clubs from one to two to justify the amount of money spent by the clubs during the league. This would make the BCB more Dhaka-centric rather than decentralised as it would give even more power to the clubs from the capital. The third major change was at the district and division level where anyone, even from outside the district or divisional sports association’s executive committee, can now become a councilor. Previously, a district councilor needed a minimum of three years experience in the executive body of his/her district. On December 13, the Dhaka High Court gave a stay order of three months on the amended BCB constitution, which means the board has to be run under the 2008 charter.Chowdhury was a pivotal figure in the country’s cricket between 1996 and 2001 when Bangladesh won the ICC Trophy, were given ODI and Test status and held a global event and his criticism is a sign of major unease about the conflict-ridden BCB that is now run by an adhoc committee instead of an elected body.”It is a matter of concern to see such divisions in Bangladesh cricket,” Chowdhury said. “I don’t want to pick any of these sides, be it districts, clubs or players. We should be speaking on behalf of cricket.”First of all, it is not clear what recommendations were considered when these changes to constitution were made. Secondly, we also have to know what process was used. When a higher body makes such amendments, it cannot just be made for the sake of it. The amendment has to come through a reference point. What I’m trying to understand is whether these changes were sought by the BCB or the NSC.”From what I know of the NSC Act, it contradicts to how the amendments were made. As far as I know, the BCB adhoc committee hasn’t discussed these changes.”Over the past weekend, the club representatives and those from the districts as well as the players’ body have all commented on the amended constitution in a series of press briefings in Dhaka. The BCB has remained quiet about the matter. Chowdhury criticised this silence and asked the BCB to take the lead in correcting the wrongs.”The cricket board has to take a stance, say whether they support the changes that have been made to the constitution. It is important to know their position because the BCB is the governing body.”Everyone who will be affected by these changes are speaking about it, whether that be criticism or appreciation. But the BCB is quiet,” he said.He also pointed out the lack of clarity when it comes to following a modus operandi of running the BCB. “Ever since we wrote up the model constitution in 1998, it has been like a pendulum where we are swinging from a board of directors to an executive committee system and back to the board of directors.”Chowdhury said that the BCB should not have governmental intervention because it’s a strong enough body, especially through its wealth. “The changes are establishing political influence in cricket. If the government had helped the BCB financially, it would have had a say.”But the BCB has more money in the bank than the NSC probably, so I don’t see a reason for the government to have an influence. I am not a believer of making these changes because the ICC has said so. I want political influence out because it is the right thing to do.”

Burden-free Yardy gives Sussex edge

Michael Yardy scored 89 as Sussex established a first-innings lead of more than 100 against Middlesex before taking two late wickets

David Lloyd at Hove11-Aug-2012
ScorecardToby Roland-Jones took career-best first-class figures of 6 for 66•Middlesex CCC

Change your captain, change your luck? Well, to be fair, things were going quite nicely for Sussex before Mike Yardy decided to hand the Championship reins to Ed Joyce a fortnight ago but both men seem to have benefitted significantly from the switch.Joyce, having scored 107 during last week’s win against Worcestershire, gave his team a sound base in this match by making 68 at the top of the order. And Yardy, who announced that he wished to concentrate on his own game, ended an indifferent run of four-day form with an excellent innings of 89.Yardy had passed 50 on only a couple of occasions in Championship cricket since hitting 110 against Lancashire back in April but here he looked all set for three figures – and would have deserved them on a still-tricky pitch – until miscuing a pull into the hands of long leg.Although the former England player’s unexpected departure, seventh out with the total 238, put something of a dent in Sussex’s plans to post a truly commanding total, they were still able to reach 287 – despite a career-best 6 for 66 from Toby Roland-Jones. That gave the hosts a first-innings lead of 117, an advantage which ought to prove decisive as they seek to take over second place in the table behind title favourites Warwickshire. There is nothing particularly pretty about Yardy’s batting style, at least not when he sets up with his splayed feet stance. But the left-hander can be mighty effective, and was so on Saturday as he punished Middlesex whenever they fed his strong leg-side play or offered him a bit too much width outside off stump. No batsman has been able to operate with complete freedom (although Chris Rogers tried to late on when he gave Middlesex a flying start) because the odd ball continued to lift quite alarmingly from a good length. Ollie Rayner suffered most, in terms of pain, on Friday when hit on the left hand by a delivery from James Anyon. Today it was Joyce who had to call for the magic spray after one from Roland-Jones reared to locate the opener’s rib cage.Another snorter from Roland-Jones, soon after, did Joyce no physical damage but brought about his downfall, leaping to hit a glove and present keeper John Simpson with a simple, lobbed catch. That breakthrough ended a stand of 78 for the fourth wicket, the highest partnership of the match so far, and came at a time when Middlesex were still hopeful of limiting the first innings damage to around 50.Unfortunately for the visitors, they cannot quite match Sussex for pace and bounce. But in Roland-Jones they possessed a constant threat and it was only fitting that the 24-year-old, who is already on England’s radar, returned the county’s best bowling analysis of the season. The wicket of Yardy, who had concentrated hard for four and half hours, was a bit of a gift. But the youngster worked hard for his other successes, and had to contend with the likes of Steve Magoffin and Anyon scoring valuable runs down the order for the second consecutive match. When Middlesex set about trying to clear the arrears, Rogers looked like a man in a hurry but although his 48 came from only 53 balls he was living dangerously and it came as no great surprise when Monty Panesar had him caught behind. Joe Denly soon played on, to Magoffin, and the same bowler then saw nightwatchman Roland-Jones dropped by Chris Nash at short leg just before the close. It is not game over, by any means, with Middlesex only 25 behind and eight wickets in hand. But it is certainly game on for Sussex as they try to continue their impressive rise up the table.
