Sunderland: Mowbray Risks First Transfer Howler With £5.2m Target

Sunderland have rightly been praised for the way they have gone about their transfer business so far this summer, but they potentially risk making their first howler in their ongoing pursuit of Croatian forward Matija Frigan.

What players have Sunderland signed?

The Black Cats have so far signed Nectarios Triantis, Luis 'Hemir' Semedo, Jenson Seelt and Jobe Bellingham, with each of those aged 20 or under as the Wearside outfit look towards the future.

However, manager Tony Mowbray has made no secret of his desire to bring in another attacking player after seeing Amad Diallo return to parent club Manchester United, whilst Ross Stewart will miss the start of the new season through injury.

Having missed out on a deal for Coventry-bound Ellis Simms, who impressed on loan at the Stadium of Light in the first half of last season, Sunderland have since switched their focus elsewhere.

According to Croatian outlet Sportske Novosti, the Championship outfit have already had a first bid of £3.4m turned down for Frigan, but they may now return with a follow-up offer.

However, given the possible size of the fee involved, plus the fact that 6 foot 1 forward is untested outside of his homeland, it would surely make sense for Mowbray's men to look elsewhere.

Who is Croatian forward Matija Frigan?

Frigan has made 42 appearances in the Croatian top flight – 27 of those with current club Rijeka and the rest during a spell on loan at Hrvatski Dragovoljac in the 2021/22 campaign.

The 20-year-old frontman scored 13 goals in those 27 outings last season, with that a more-than-adequate return for a player of his age and highlighting that he is undoubtedly a big talent.

However, Football Insider previously reported that it will take an offer of £5.2m to persuade Rijeka – who is also supposedly wanted by Rangers – to cash in, which is a huge sum as far as Sunderland are concerned.

Sunderland loanee Ellis Simms.

Indeed, it was previously suggested that Sunderland were out of the running to sign Simms from Everton after Ipswich Town tabled a £4m bid earlier in the window.

The Englishman later joined Coventry City in a deal that could climb to £8m.

Frigan would have to be ready to hit the ground for that sort of fee and, while he has scored fairly regularly in the Croatian top flight, that country is ranked behind the likes of Sweden, Israel, Norway and Ukraine in terms of coefficient, giving a clear indication as to the quality of the league.

That is not to say there are no gems out there waiting to be signed at the right price, particularly given the likes of Josko Gvardiol and Luka Sucic have prospered in Europe, but Frigan still only scored at a rate of 0.59 goals per 90 minutes last season, as per FBref.

To give that some perspective, Stewart scored at a rate of 0.86 goals per 90 for Sunderland in the Championship.

Whilst the Croatia U21 international is clearly a talent – a "very interesting" one in the view of football talent scout Jacek Kulig – Sunderland would be better suited to spending their money on a more tried and tested option this window as they look to improve on last season's sixth-place finish.

Tye, Finch lift Lions off the bottom

Andrew Tye’s barrage of variations that fetched him 3 for 12 and a bruising half-century from Aaron Finch left Royal Challengers Bangalore facing early elimination

Agarkar: Lions cracked their overseas combination

Royal Challengers Bangalore paid the price for another batting meltdown to face an early elimination from IPL 2017. On a Chinnaswamy surface that played much better than other three games previously this season, RCB underachieved by being bowled out for 134, and then let the despondency slip into their bowling.Aaron Finch feasted on an attack without the injured Tymal Mills, to race to a bruising 22-ball half-century to raze down the target with 37 balls to spare and lift Gujarat Lions off the bottom of the points table. But the star was once again Andrew Tye, who unleashed a barrage of variations – including his patented knuckle ball – to finish with three wickets that set up Lions’ third win in eight matches.Tye ties RCB’s top-order in knots
Lions unleashed two young fast bowlers – Nathu Singh and Basil Thampi – on a surface where they got the ball to climb onto the batsmen. Four nights after slumping to 49 all out, the lowest score in IPL history, RCB started cautiously. The first four overs had fetched just two boundaries, one of which was Virat Kohli’s strong bottom-hand whip for six. But the frustration to score freely resulted in him picking out short fine leg in the fourth over. With an early wicket in the bag, Tye, who had taken two or more wickets in three of the four matches this season (no other Lions bowlers had taken more than one before this game) was brought in and he struck first ball with a cross-seam delivery that nibbled away to take Chris Gayle’s outside edge. Off his next delivery, he got a length ball to climb on Travis Head, who nicked to Suresh Raina at slip. Kedar Jadhav extinguished the possibility of a second hat-trick for Tye, but Lions had done the early damage, with RCB tottering at 23 for 3 after five.Jadhav’s lift, Mandeep’s brain-freeze
Jadhav offset the damage by hitting Basil Thampi for three successive boundaries in the sixth over. He started off with a pull in front of square and followed that up with a flick and an upper cut. Then in the next over, Ravindra Jadeja fired them in and got shoveled inside-out over cover. Having raced to 21 off 12 deliveries, Jadhav was in the mood. He welcomed debutant legspinner Ankit Soni by biffing him across the line over deep midwicket. His enterprise overshadowed AB de Villiers’ presence. A fight back was on the cards, but trying to be a little overambitious – exposing all three stumps to cutely dab Jadeja behind square – cost him.Losing wickets in clumps was the order for RCB. Five balls after Jadhav fell, a total breakdown in communication resulted in de Villiers’ run-out. Mandeep Singh ran past his senior partner after initially stopping midway on his partner’s call to leave him stranded. De Villiers’ 11 deliveries fetched him five. At 60 for 5 at the halfway mark, RCB needed a miracle from their lower order. Negi provided that with some lusty blows but fell for a 19-ball 32 in his quest to muscle Soni for a third-successive six. A 23-run ninth-wicket stand between S Aravind and Aniket Choudhary managed to lift them to 134.Badree’s early strikes raise RCB hopes
Ishan Kishan’s promotion to open with Brendon McCullum could’ve meant only one thing: of taking the attack to RCB. Kishan did just that, hitting Badree for three boundaries before being pinned in front by a skidder. Then, Kohli’s decision to give Badree a third-straight over paid off when McCullum holed out to long-on, trying to take the fielder on. With Lions at 23 for 2, RCB were in with a shout.Finch sucker-punches RCB
The game was on the edge, but Finch decided attack was the best way to drive the game forward. He muscled Badree for two sixes in his first three deliveries and punished Aravind for two fours in the over that followed to offset any pressure there was on Lions.Yuzvendra Chahal and Aniket Choudhary came in for similar treatment as Finch used his free swing to pepper the short side boundaries and race to a 22-ball half-century, the fastest for a Lions batsman. At the halfway mark, Lions were 95 for 2. Suresh Raina, far from his fluent self, should’ve been caught at deep midwicket but Chahal reprieved him by overstepping. But by then the game was all but lost by RCB.

"Things are happening" – Romano drops big Man United takeover update

Manchester United are in the middle of a 'very complicated' situation regarding a potential takeover of the club but 'things are happening' at Old Trafford with regard to the process, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.

What's the latest takeover news at Manchester United?

According to The Guardian, Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani is 'increasingly uncertain' that the Glazers plan to sell Manchester United despite the club being up for auction since last November.

The report states that the Qatari businessman, who is heading up the Nine Two Foundation's bid to take control of the Premier League giants, has yet to hear back from the Glazer family concerning his fifth bid for control of the Red Devils, which is said to stand at around £6 billion.

Sheikh Jassim's main bidding rival, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his petrochemicals firm INEOS, are also still in the running to take over Manchester United and Ratcliffe has given an update on their bid to stump the Qatari businessman in a recent interview cited by The Manchester Evening News.

Ratcliffe spoke about the process in a book launch at Knightsbridge, stating: "We obviously can't say too much because we've signed a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) and we respect that but there's still a process and we're in the process. "We have a good offer – we've met the Glazers a couple of times and we had a good conversation but at the end of the day it's their decision … we would still very much like to do it. I also believe we would do a good job and do it for the right reasons. We keep very focused on it."

As per The Daily Mail, Ratcliffe either wants to buy 69% of the club or a stakeholding of just over 50%, which could enable Joel and Avram Glazer to stay on in minority roles. On the flip side, Sheikh Jassim wants to assume 100% control without any involvement from other parties.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, transfer insider Romano has revealed that the battle for control at Old Trafford is still a 'very complicated' situation.

Romano said: "Things are happening, for sure, behind the scenes. This is 100% confirmed."

What next for Manchester United?

When the takeover process at Manchester United will conclude is anyone's guess and will not be something that Erik Ten Hag wastes too much time thinking about as he aims to refine his squad for 2023/24.

On a positive note, Manchester United have officially announced Mason Mount as their first summer signing for an initial fee in the region of £55 million, with add-ons potentially raising the sum paid to £60 million, as per Sky Sports.

Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana.

In other news, the Red Devils have submitted a bid for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana worth £38.5 million as a new signing in the goalkeeping department remains a key priority at Old Trafford, as reported by Sky Sports.

The Daily Mail claim that discussions are continuing with both Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund and Eintracht Frankfurt forward Randal Kolo Muani over potential moves to Manchester United, signifying that the remainder of the transfer window may be an exciting time for the Red Devils.

Whatmore to coach Kerala in 2017-18

Dav Whatmore has signed a six-month deal as head coach of Kerala

Shashank Kishore13-Apr-2017Dav Whatmore has signed a six-month deal as head coach of Kerala. The formal announcement was made by the Kerala Cricket Association in Kochi last week. He will start mid-September and will likely see out the entire 2017-18 domestic season. Apart from coaching the senior team, Whatmore will also be involved in KCA’s junior cricket programmes and work closely with coaches in charge of the Under-23 team.”It’s important to build a system which can then help extend growth within the game across the state. That is what I’m looking forward to doing,” Whatmore told ESPNcricinfo. “That said, it’s also important to bring in results along with development of these young players. It takes time and I’m confident this association will last more than just the six months we’ve agreed upon. But for now this is a good start.”Whatmore, whose coaching stint with Zimbabwe ended in May 2016, is currently based in India. He is on a three-year deal as a consultant with the Chennai-based Sri Ramachandra University, which has collaborated with his cricket academy – Whatmore Centre of Cricket. He will be assisted there by a team of coaches with whom he hopes to streamline talent across age-groups.”I’m focused on the development side of the game, but it so happened that I could combine that along with coaching an upcoming state side, which I found challenging. That explains my association with Kerala,” Whatmore said. “I’ll be working six months with SRU to help set up a system, and it so worked out that the domestic season in India starts only after that.”June to August is not a good time for cricket in Kerala with the monsoons. With this arrangement, we can also have the senior and junior Kerala teams train in Chennai at the SRU facility. That would also allow an opportunity to work not just with Kerala in the pre-season but also complete my initial commitment as far as setting up of a system in Chennai goes.”Kerala had a poor 2016-17 Ranji Trophy campaign in which they managed just one win in nine matches. Halfway through their campaign, the association sacked P Balachandran as head coach, citing “non-performance”, and replaced him with Tinu Yohannan, the former India fast bowler. Their poor form extended across formats – they finished fourth in the South Zone Inter-State T20s and failed to advance to the knockout stage of the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy.”It’s a completely different challenge because I don’t know much about the side, but what I do know is they’ve been struggling to make the step up as far as first-class cricket is concerned. Helping them graduate to the next level is a challenge that excited me,” Whatmore said. “There is plenty of potential within the state. Taking the lead in five out of the eight games says they’re doing something right. If you can do it in the first innings, surely there is potential, but players are getting lost somewhere. That is why the off-season is crucial.”Whatmore has previously coached four international sides, Zimbabwe most recently. He was in charge of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan prior to that. In India, he has been involved with the National Cricket Academy and the Under-19 team apart from coaching Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.

Sarah Coyte retires from cricket

Sarah Coyte, the South Australia and Adelaide Strikers allrounder, is seeking better balance in life after announcing her retirement from all forms of the game at the age of 25

Daniel Brettig01-Mar-2017Sarah Coyte, the South Australia and Adelaide Strikers allrounder, is seeking better balance in life after announcing her retirement from all forms of the game at the age of 25. Her decision arrived a year after she stepped down from international duty with the Southern Stars to combat mental health issues.Having come from a strong cricket background in New South Wales – her brother Scott also played for the Blues and went on to represent the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League – Coyte put together a remarkably consistent record for Australia in ODIs in particular, averaging 22.00 with the bat and 22.27 with the ball over 30 matches beginning in 2011.She excelled largely with the ball in Tests and Twenty20s for Australia, and performed similar feats with NSW and latterly SA. Coyte has spoken publicly in the past of her battles with anorexia nervosa while playing international cricket, and said on Wednesday she had made the decision to quit the game and return home to her family in Sydney to continue working on her personal development and quality of life.”The last two seasons with the Scorpions and the Strikers have been the best and most fun of my career,” she said. “I will miss the girls so much; I have really enjoyed being around them. I want to thank SACA for everything they have done for me and the support they have offered during some hard times.”I am going home to Sydney to be close to my family and restore some balance to my life. I have been realising lately how much I have missed my family and it is finally time for me to go home. I am not going back home to play for New South Wales, I am leaving domestic cricket altogether to refocus on myself and my loved ones.”Coyte took on the mantle of a senior player in SA, offering leadership to others that the Scorpions benefited from enormously – never more so than in the 2015 WNCL final when they snapped a run of 10 consecutive titles for NSW in a memorable final. Coyte contributed a typically tidy spell to tie her former teammates in knots.”Since joining SA, Sarah has had such a great influence over the young players, especially in terms of her commitment to strength and conditioning,” the Scorpions coach Andrea McCauley said. “She really led the way for the younger Scorps and showed them just what it takes to be an elite athlete.”It’s disappointing to lose such a quality player. I have enjoyed having Sarah as part of the group for the past two seasons but it’s so important that she looks after herself and does whatever it is she wants to do with her life next. I truly wish her all the best for this new chapter.”Coyte’s efforts were also recognised by the Cricket Australia chief executive, James Sutherland. “On behalf of the board and everyone at Cricket Australia, we congratulate Sarah on a wonderful career, both internationally and domestically, and thank her for the wonderful contribution she has made to Australian cricket,” he said.”She played a key role in making the Australian team the formidable side it is, and should be proud of her efforts and what she achieved in her career. Sarah always showed a great deal of fight and passion when playing for her country, and we thank her for her commitment to the green and gold.”After she returns to Sydney in April, Coyte will expand her burgeoning career in health and fitness, making use of the many lessons learned while playing elite sport.

Massive Update Emerges Over £350k-A-Week Liverpool Star’s Future

Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah won't be going anywhere this summer despite reports suggesting a shock exit is on the cards, according to reliable journalist David Lynch.

How many goals has Mo Salah scored?

The 31-year-old has etched his name into Reds folklore since arriving back in 2017, arguably becoming one of the greatest players in the club's history.

He has amassed a staggering tally of 186 goals in 305 appearances, and few players have had a greater impact for any club over recent decades. He has won all there is to win, whether it be the Champions League in 2019 or the Premier League title the following year, among numerous other trophies.

Worryingly however, Salah has been linked with a shock move to Saudi Arabia, where clubs are offering eye-watering amounts of money to top players, and the idea of Liverpool losing him at this point is something that doesn't bear thinking about.

The £350,000-a-week Egyptian has two more years remaining on his current Reds contract, putting them in a slightly precarious position, should he suddenly decide that he wants to move on. That being said, it doesn't look as though he intends on doing that any time soon, following a new update.

Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp

Is Salah staying at Liverpool?

According to Football Insider's Lynch, Salah is "set to stay" on Merseyside this summer, despite reports suggesting that he could depart for a new challenge. It is stated that a move there one day remains "probable", though.

This is clearly a massive boost for anyone of a Liverpool persuasion, with Salah a genuine world superstar who remains a priceless player for the Reds. He has been rightly hailed as "world-class" by Jurgen Klopp down the years, and while so many players struggled last season, he still found an incredibly high level, scoring 30 times in all competitions.

He may be 31 years of age now, but he is a physical machine who is rarely injured, and with players managing to be at an elite level well into their 30s these days – Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are two obvious examples – there is no reason why Salah can't be a force for years to come still.

Next summer could be a tricky situation for Liverpool, with Salah having one year remaining on his contract at that point, but for now, fans should appreciate him while he is still at Anfield, as he looks to spearhead their resurgence in 2023/24.

Cartwright ton keeps WA in the match

ESPNcricinfo’s wrap of the third day’s play between Victoria and Western Australia in Alice Springs

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Mar-2017
Scorecard File photo – Hilton Cartwright registered his third first-class century•Getty ImagesHilton Cartwright scored the third first-class hundred of his career, and his first of this Sheffield Shield season, as Western Australia clung on to hope in their match against Victoria in Alice Springs. Having conceded a hefty first-innings deficit, the Warriors went to stumps on day three at 7 for 238 in their second innings, leading by 62 runs, with D’Arcy Short on 7 and Jason Behrendorff on 4.To have even a slim chance of victory, the Western Australia tail will likely need to push that advantage up towards 150, but Cartwright’s hundred and a half-century from Michael Klinger at least kept them in the game. The Warriors began the day on 0 for 29 and quickly lost Cameron Bancroft, who was lbw to James Pattinson, and then Jon Wells, who was caught behind off Daniel Christian.Cartwright and Klinger put on 139 for the fourth wicket, both grinding their way through the innings, before Cartwright was lbw to Pattinson for 101. Although Cartwright was overlooked for a call-up to the Test squad in India as a replacement for the injured Mitchell Marsh, Pattinson could be a chance of being called on after Mitchell Starc was also ruled out due to injury. Pattinson finished the day with 4 for 48.Klinger fell soon after Cartwright for 55 from 172 balls, also lbw to Pattinson, and the loss of Josh Inglis and Ashon Turner late in the day gave Victoria hope of running through the tail.

Phil Foden’s Son "El Wey" Goes Viral With New Instagram

It’s not easy to steal the show from Phil Foden. After all, the 23-year-old has just won the treble at Manchester City and has been winning trophies as one of the best young players around since he made his first-team debut in 2017.If anyone was going to take the spotlight from the academy graduate, however, it was going to be another Foden – with Ronnie, his son, going viral after the Champions League final.First nicknamed ‘El Wey’ (the dude) by those in South America, the name quickly caught on across supporters, resulting in the creation of his Instagram account, which has reached over 1M followers in the space of a day.

Why has Ronnie Foden ‘El Wey’ gone viral?

As Man City celebrated their Champions League win, one constant feature was Foden’s son, as he made sure to even get his hands on the trophy, himself, before joining in on the celebrations, dancing in the dressing room. Clearly loved by his dad’s City teammates, Ronnie stole the show in several videos.

The ‘El Wey’ trend began among South American fans out of nowhere and has become bigger and bigger since, with Ronnie’s photo even seen hanging up in a school.

The creation of the Instagram account almost instantly pulled in over 1M followers.

With Foden and his partner controlling the account, Ronnie’s first post showed him sat atop his dad’s shoulders after the Champions League final, with the caption saying: “El Wey has arrived.”

That first post, which came on Sunday, has already received over a million likes. Meanwhile, the account’s second post, which shows Ronnie and Foden with Sergio Aguero at the Champions League final has reached 600k likes in six hours.

Fans react to El Wey on Instagram

Fans have been reacting to the viral Instagram account on Twitter, some of which you can see below:

It seems the Foden’s are pretty popular right now with a mural recently popping up in his home town of Stockport following his incredible treble-winning season with Manchester City.

No doubt, as a homegrown player, the midfielder is adored by the City faithful and with a Champions League now added to his numerous FA Cup, Premier League, and League Cup trophies, he’s essentially completed club football.

And now, after the popularity of his son’s Instagram account, it seems as though he’s conquered social media too! Not bad for a 23-year-old.

Man Utd Could Repeat Casemiro Success With "Super" £206k-p/w Gem

Having snapped up the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Casemiro in recent years, it looks as if Manchester United could be plotting to sign another high-profile, experienced figure this summer, amid current speculation regarding the club's interest in Antoine Griezmann.

According to reports in Spain last week, the Red Devils are said to be among a raft of elite European sides who are interested in prising the 32-year-old from Atletico Madrid ahead of next season, with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan also showing an interest in the playmaking forward.

The suggestion is that the former Barcelona man has a release clause worth in the region of just €25m (£21) in his current deal with the La Liga side, ensuring that the Old Trafford outfit could well be able to snap up the 121-cap maestro on the cheap in their quest to bolster their attacking ranks.

It is not the first time that United have seemingly shown an interest in signing the one-time Real Sociedad man in recent times, with Sky Sports journalist Melissa Reddy having suggested that Erik ten Hag and co had enquired about the prospect of signing the World Cup-winning Frenchman last summer.

With Ten Hag seemingly keen to strengthen his forward line and midfield ranks over the coming months, the Dutchman could perhaps kill two birds with one stone by snapping up the versatile sensation…

Should Man United sign Griezmann?

The £206k-per-week asset could well follow in the footsteps of his compatriot, Varane and last year's summer arrival, Casemiro, in making the move from the Spanish capital to the Theatre of Dreams, with the hope being that Griezmann can replicate the success of the latter man, in particular.

Casemiro

The Brazilian has made a "huge difference" since his arrival from Real Madrid on a £70m deal back in August – according to club legend Gary Neville – having proven himself to be a truly "great football player", in the words of his manager, after chipping in with seven goals and six assists in 51 games across all fronts last season.

Much like there may be with Griezmann, there were initial doubts about the 31-year-old midfielder joining towards the latter stages of his career – with pundit Graeme Souness describing the fee as "too much money" at the time – although the experienced machine has seemingly firmly quashed any such concerns.

The aim then will be for Casemiro's old Madrid adversary to also make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League if he is to make the move this summer, with the 5 foot 9 magician having the ability to showcase to those in England just why he is a "super talent", according to Alan Shearer.

Having arguably been his nation's "key player" after taking on a surprise deep-lying midfield role at the World Cup in Qatar – as per ex-United man Diego Forlan – Griezmann continued that impact at club level in Diego Simeone's side, having operated behind the striker for much of the 2022/23 campaign.

It is not wrong to suggest that the Macon native perhaps even outperformed Bruno Fernandes in his playmaking role having contributed 15 goals and 16 assists in 38 La Liga games last season, while the Portugal international, by contrast, registered eight goals and eight assists in 37 Premier League games.

That haul of 31 goal involvements ensured that Griezmann was able to record a standout average match rating of 7.74 – as per Sofascore – with that again putting him ahead of Fernandes (7.56), showcasing just what an astute addition he could be for Ten Hag.

Whether the fleet-footed ace is to operate as an option through the middle or in an advanced midfield role, such a quality recruit could potentially be able to emulate Casemiro's influence on the Red Devils.

Rahane, Tare blitz helps Mumbai cling on in high-scorer

A round-up of the West Zone games from the first round of the Inter-State T20 tournament

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Jan-2017Ajinkya Rahane struck 78 off 53 balls, including 11 fours and a six and Aditya Tare bettered him with 79 off 41 balls to amass 211 for 3 for Mumbai and yet they could barely cling on to victory. Baroda were wilting at 84 for 5 in the 10th over when Vishnu Solanki took control, razing an unbeaten 69 off 34 balls at a strike-rate of 202. The game hurtled to a hair-raising finish at Reliance Stadium in Vadodara but, in the end, there were just too many runs to chase down.Much of that was down to Rahane, who lost his place in the Indian T20 side, and the Mumbai captain Tare. They galloped along during their second-wicket partnership, putting on 152 runs in only 84 balls. There was only one bowler who could maintain an economy rate under 9 – Irfan Pathan, on the 11th anniversary of his taking a hat-trick in the very first over of the India-Pakistan Test in Mohali, conceded a mere 27 runs in his four overs. That’s just over six runs an over in a match that threw up 416 runs at 10.4 per over.File photo: Ankit Bawne’s career-best score could not prevent a five-wicket win for Gujarat•ESPNcricinfo LtdBaroda’s challenge was based on a sound opening stand as Kedar Devdhar and Miten Shah put on 52 in 4.5 overes, but they were hurt badly as soon as they lost their first wicket. Pravin Tambe, the 45-year old legspinner, used that opening to dismiss Deepak Hooda and both Pathan brothers for single-digits to put Mumbai on top. He finished with 3 for 26 in four overs but had to spend much of his time on the field fretting as Solanki kept pushing. He put on 59 for sixth wicket with Swapnil Singh at 10.11 per over and 56 with the seventh with Soaeb Tai at over 16 an over. But eventually, he ran out of time.Gujarat overcame Ankit Bawne’s unbeaten 59-ball 90 to beat Maharashtra by five wickets. That Maharashtra posted 154 for 7 was down to a fifth-wicket partnership of 47 between Bawne and debutant Naushad Shaikh, and an unbroken eight-wicket stand of 45 off 20 balls between Bawne and debutant Jagdish. Offspinner Rujul Bhatt took 3 for 28, while the new-ball pair of Chintan Gaja and Ishwar Chaudhary impressed with figures of 2 for 30 and 1 for 16 in their respective quotas.Gujarat lost two early wickets in the chase, and when Dhruv Raval was taken out for 20, they were 56 for 3. A half-century stand between Bhatt and Chirag Gandhi then kept them on course. Although Bhatt fell for 54 off 34 balls, and Jesal Karia was dismissed for a duck, Rohit Dahiya partnered Gandhi to knock off the remaining runs. Gandhi was unbeaten on 39 off 22 balls, while Dahiya’s struck at 200 for his 32 not out.
