Celtic’s predicted lineup vs Livingston for SPFL clash

Celtic will look to continue their rich vein of form when they return to Scottish Premiership action later this afternoon.

Neil Lennon’s side welcome Livingston to Celtic Park knowing a two-goal win would take them to the top spot in the table ahead of their arch-rivals, who play on Sunday instead.

Last time out, the Hoops nudged past St Mirren with Shane Duffy and James Forrest bagging two first-half goals to counteract the home side’s opener.

So what sort of side will the 49-year-old select? Here’s what we are predicting…

We could see Lennon stick with the 3-5-2 system but there may be a trio of interesting changes across the pitch.

Vasilis Barkas will remain between the sticks as the Bhoys’ new first-choice option, though there’s a change in the back three in front of him with Christopher Jullien coming back in for Hatem Abd Elhamed.

He’ll partner both Kristoffer Ajer and fan-favourite loanee Shane Duffy.

Greg Taylor and James Forrest keep their places at wing-back after both making an impact vs St Mirren.

In midfield, there could be a shock alteration with skipper Scott Brown dropping to the bench. It means Olivier Ntcham, who has been linked with a £15m exit this summer, gets the nod instead, partnering Callum McGregor.

Ryan Christie could slot in behind the two-pronged attack of Odsonne Edouard and Alban Ajeti, who replaces Patryk Klimala. The 22-year-old has been better from the bench and Ajeti’s three goals in four SPFL matches should surely warrant a start.

AND in other news, Bhoys should reignite interest in £22.5m “big, big talent”…

Leeds United offered Chelsea star in cut-price deal

Michy Batshuayi’s career at Stamford Bridge has been one big rollercoaster ride ever since his arrival in 2016. Initially, he was touted as a big talent that could give Chelsea what they lacked in attack but the London side soon realised he wasn’t exactly what they needed after all. Various loan spells followed as the striker spent time at different clubs such as Borussia Dortmund, Valencia and Crystal Palace, all with very mixed results.

But now, according to Get French Football News (via The Sun), Chelsea have offered Batshuayi to Leeds United and could even part ways with him for a cut-price. If the same source is to be believed, the forward was initially valued at around £50m a couple of years ago, but now, with only a year of his Chelsea contract left, Frank Lampard would be willing to let him go for around £25m.

Batshuayi is still only 26 and in his prime years so this could be an interesting deal for Marcelo Bielsa’s squad that is now coming back to the Premier League after a long absence. Of course, Leeds have their own targets and for now, we don’t know what’s their stance on Batshuayi.

One thing, however, is pretty much set in stone – Lampard doesn’t see the 26-year-old as part of his long-term plans and wouldn’t be opposed to selling him in the ongoing summer transfer window.

It has been a bumpy ride since his arrival but it seems it could finally be over soon.

Verdict

With the arrival of players like Timo Werner and with the current roster that includes a plethora of attacking talent, selling Batshuayi definitely seems like a good move for Chelsea. And yes, eight goals and three assists across all competitions is not a miserable return but it’s pretty safe to say that the 26-year-old has largely failed to impress.

£25m is not that much compared to what it could’ve been a couple of years ago but it’s still good money for a player that’s not in Lampard’s plans.

Liverpool: Fans agree with Wayne Rooney’s comments on Thiago transfer

Liverpool are on the cusp of making Thiago Alcantara their second senior signing of the summer window.

Talks have been back and forth for weeks, leaving fans anxious and wondering whether a move will come to fruition. A recent update from Bayern Munich chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed the Spaniard will definitely be leaving the club this summer. However, no official offer has been received from Liverpool.

Another major transfer link on everybody’s lips is where Lionel Messi will end up next season. The Argentinian star is set to leave Barcelona, with Manchester City top contenders to secure his signature (via Sky Sports).

Wayne Rooney has had his say on the two links and feels Liverpool will be in the stronger position should both sides get their man. Speaking to talkSPORT (relayed via @AnfieldEdition), the ex-Manchester United man said: “If Liverpool sign Thiago it’s over. He would be a better signing than Messi at City.”

This has sparked a lot of debate amongst fans, with many Kopites siding with their former rival. One Liverpool fan has said ‘he knows’ what he’s talking about, whilst another has described Rooney’s comments as ‘elite’.

Total Duds: Fernando just wasn’t up to scratch for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City

This article forms part of our Total Duds feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how bad a deal the club got.

La Liga returned earlier this month with a local derby between Sevilla and Real Betis, which the former won 2-0, and the identity of the scorer of their second goal that night may have raised a few eyebrows among Manchester City supporters. The man who put the seal on Sevilla’s victory was a 32-year-old midfielder known as Fernando.

Six years ago, the Brazilian arrived at the Etihad Stadium in a £12m deal from Porto, with Manuel Pellegrini adding him to a midfield which also included Fernandinho and potentially sparking much confusion among supporters and commentators alike.

While the man with the longer name remains an integral figure at the Etihad, his shorter-christened midfield compatriot did not make his presence felt in the same way in a Manchester City shirt. He was by no means a forgotten man under Pellegrini, playing 49 Premier League games in his first two seasons in England, but he managed a meagre return of four goals in those outings. Indeed, they would be his only four goals in 102 appearances in total for the club.

With Manchester City on the verge of reaching a first-ever Champions League final in 2016, Fernando was the player who ultimately nixed those hopes with his fateful own goal in a dour semi-final against Real Madrid, who won 1-0 on aggregate. Four years on, that remains the furthest that the English club have gone in the competition.

Pep Guardiola replaced Pellegrini that summer and it didn’t take him long to decide that the Brazilian midfielder was not for him. Fernando started only five league matches under the Spaniard, whose obsession with ball retention and a passing game ultimately counted against the midfielder. Fernando averaged only 24.9 passes per game under Guardiola, while his 88.5% passing accuracy rate that season was inferior to fellow midfielders Ilkay Gundogan (91.9%), Samir Nasri (90.9%) and Yaya Toure (89.8%).

In August 2017, Guardiola sanctioned the sale of Fernando to Galatasaray for just £5.4m (as per TransferMarkt), bringing an end to the midfielder’s ultimately undistingushed three-year spell at the Etihad. In the end, the Brazilian just couldn’t meet the lofty standards demanded by the current Manchester City manager.

West Ham ‘determined’ to bring Mario Balotelli back to the Premier League

West Ham United are believed to be keen on bringing a new striker to the London Stadium this winter.

And, according to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Mario Balotelli has become the latest man to be linked with a move to The Hammers.

It is being claimed that the Irons are determined to bring the former Manchester City and Liverpool striker back to the Premier League.

The 28-year-old’s contract at Nice is set to expire in the summer and West Ham could look to try and capitalise on a cut-price fee for the Italy international if they were to try and land him in January.

Olympique de Marseille are thought to be interested in the attacker, however, a move back to England’s top-flight is thought to be ‘alluring’ for the player.

The Verdict:

West Ham appear to have been linked with a number of different attackers throughout January and Balotelli is just the latest name to appear.

Although his time in England was not considered to be the best, he has managed to turn things around in France with Nice and has a rather prolific record, hitting 33 goals in his last two seasons – however, he is yet to hit the target in 10 appearances so far this season.

With Marseille thought to be interested, it remains to be seen if West Ham will look to bring the Italy international back to the Premier League.

WHAT THEY SAID

Danilo insists that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner remains an integral part of Roberto Martinez’s plans, telling reporters after a demolition job against hapless Luxembourg: "If Cristiano Ronaldo was here, the result would also be like this. He would help with goals and assists. It wasn't because of his absence that this game was won by eight or nine goals."

How can the USMNT cope without Weston McKennie or Sergino Dest? The best U.S. starting XI for Nations League final vs Canada

GOAL takes a look at how the U.S. could line up against Canada in the Nations League final.

The U.S. men's national team heads into the Nations League final riding high after their best performance against their fiercest rival in quite some time. To put it lightly, the U.S. took Mexico apart, dominating them all over the field in a straightforward, yet still overly chaotic, win.

In an ideal world, the U.S. would simply run it back in Sunday's final against Canada, deploying the same team to keep the momentum moving. This isn't an ideal world, though, due to that aforementioned chaos.

Weston McKennie and Sergino Dest will both miss the finale after earning straight red cards in the win over Mexico. Neither dismissal has been overly criticized, as both were sent off for matching the passion of the game, but the fact is that the U.S. is now somewhat shorthanded for a big game against a solid Canada team.

Because of that, B.J. Callaghan has some massive decisions to make in his second game in charge. How does he replace two key players, both of whom were spectacular against El Tri? Does he make any other changes in the XI, potentially at striker or centerback? And how does he balance a midfield that is now without both McKennie and Tyler Adams?

GOAL takes a look at what lineup Callaghan should go with for Sunday night's final!

GettyGK: Matt Turner

No wasting time here; Turner is starting.

He was rarely tested against Mexico, as the USMNT bossed the game, but one would expect Canada to provide a bit more pressure due to their elite-level attackers.

AdvertisementImago ImagesLB: Antonee Robinson

After another solid performance against Mexico, Robinson will almost certainly remain in the XI.

Any slight chance that he'd be benched went out the window when Dest was sent off, as the USMNT's lack of depth at fullback means he'll be in the XI again.

Getty ImagesCB: Miles Robinson

Thursday night's win was exactly the type of performance that showed why, given all he's been through, many remain so convinced by Robinson.

He's all the way back from his horrible Achilles injury, as evidenced by his fantastic effort against Mexico. The Atlanta United star had an answer for everything Mexico threw at him, which is why he should remain in the XI.

GettyCB: Chris Richards

Why ruin a good thing?

This centerback spot is one that will be up for grabs, with it likely coming down to Richards or Walker Zimmerman. The latter, of course, has the experience edge and will also be well-rested, having only come on for a cameo against Mexico.

But the Richards-Robinson partnership worked really, really well against El Tri, who never really bothered that duo. It's a tough call, for sure, but it seems like a good idea to keep that pairing together as a reward for their solid performance.

Forget Lionel Messi, Alexis Mac Allister and Jude Bellingham – James Maddison is the signing of the summer transfer window for Spurs at just £40m

The England international has completed his transfer to north London after leaving Leicester City following their relegation to the Championship

Even before Leicester City's return to the Championship was confirmed, this summer had long been earmarked as the transfer window where James Maddison would depart the King Power Stadium. Over the past two seasons, Maddison has been linked with a string of Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Newcastle.

In the end, though, it is Tottenham who have finally snapped up the England international. At the beginning of the window, the Foxes were reportedly quoting £60 million ($75.8m) for their prized asset. However, following some push back from Spurs, it's expected that he will cost just £40m ($51m).

Even with Maddison having just one year left to run on his contract, this represents pretty sensational value, especially when you consider how much Manchester United could end up paying for an English player in a similar position: Mason Mount.

This isn't just a transfer born of convenience, though. Maddison is, without doubt, an elite Premier League performer. By picking him up so early in the window, Spurs might have completed the best business of the summer so far.

Getty ImagesAmong elite company

Maddison's consistency after arriving at Leicester from Coventry City was pretty spectacular. He entered his first season with lofty expectations as the Foxes parted with a record fee for a Championship player to secure his services, but he hit the ground running, with no player in Europe's top-five leagues – not even Lionel Messi – creating more chances than him during the 2018-19 season. The arrival of Brendan Rodgers partway through that campaign coincided with a significant improvement in his overall game the following season.

Although he registered fewer assists, only Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish and Bruno Fernandes averaged more goal-creating actions per 90 minutes during 2019-20. Maddison's performances helped Leicester to a fifth-placed finish, and they likely would have broken into the Champions League qualification spots too, if their playmaker-in-chief did not pick up an untimely hip injury in April 2020.

The 2020-21 season was Maddison's best yet as he racked up 15 Premier League goal involvements, despite again being troubled by the same knock. He improved on this further in 2021-22, where he managed 12 goals and eight assists, despite Leicester becoming a far less well-functioning team than they had been previously.

These incremental improvements tells the story of a player who took on more and more responsibility with each passing season. And, heading into the 2022-23 campaign, a Leicester team riddled with problems on and off the field knew they would have to lean upon their talisman more than ever.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesA bump in the road

We all know how it ended, but it's worth highlighting that, for the most part, Maddison's reputation has emerged from Leicester's doomed 2022-23 season relatively unscathed. Ironically, from a statistical perspective, it was one of the midfielder's most productive campaigns.

He ended the season with 10 goals and nine assists, chipping in with some vital contributions along the way. Maddison was unplayable against Nottingham Forest in October, grabbing a fine brace and setting up Patson Daka in a dominant 4-0 win.

Handed the armband against new club Tottenham in February, he produced a captain's display, scoring and assisting in a 4-1 victory. This was supposed to provide the springboard for Leicester to pull away from the relegation zone. However, a nine-game losing run followed, with Maddison's performances falling off a cliff too.

During this dire period, it became increasingly clear that Leicester were depending on their creative fulcrum far too much – and it was getting to him. During the run-in, Maddison was infuriating to watch at times. Not only was he often trying too hard to dig his side out of the hole single-handedly, his on-field body language was overtly negative. More than once he threw his limbs about in frustration at his team-mates as they slipped further and further into relegation trouble.

(C)Getty Images'We'll be fine'

As Leicester edged towards the trap door, a tweet Maddison sent back in March gained a second life. The player had responded to a piece written by journalist Rob Tanner in which he opined that all the ingredients were there for the Foxes to be relegated following a damaging defeat to Southampton.

Maddison took exception, replying: "Rubbish. Watch and analyse the game properly and stop writing headlines like that which you know makes fans pile on with negativity. Play like that and we’ll be absolutely fine. Created numerous brilliant chances and win comfortably on another day."

Retrospectively, at best it comes across as ill-judged. At worst, it was downright arrogant. It also speaks to the pressure Maddison was feeling to be a leader in the dressing room and on the pitch during the second half of the season.

This mental toll affected his on-field displays, too. In a crunch meeting with Bournemouth in April, Maddison's horrendous attempted back pass allowed Dominic Solanke to slip through and score the only goal of the game. A few weeks later, he stepped up to take a penalty against Everton, only to see it saved by Jordan Pickford. This provided the Toffees with the impetus to recover and earn a point – a result that played a significant role in sending Leicester down.

It a worth noting that Maddison assisted Jamie Vardy in the very same game and also set up the same team-mate to score against Leeds the previous week. But still, there remains a feeling that he struggled with carrying the lionshare of his side's attack last season when the stakes were at their highest.

Getty ImagesTime for a fresh start

This context is important in relation to his move to Tottenham. It would be easy to focus on Maddison playing for a relegated team last season and in turn dismiss his arrival as a criminal overpay. However, Spurs are likely to offer the 26-year-old the exact environment he needs to recover from a mentally-draining season. Maddison is coming into a squad where he won't be expected to be the main man.

Provided he doesn't seal a move to Bayern Munich, Harry Kane will be performing that role, alongside Son Heung-min. Freed from that responsibility, Maddison will have the headspace to focus solely on feeding his team-mates or scoring goals himself. It should be a perfect fit.

England, Wales, Iran: How did USMNT's World Cup Group B opponents do in the September window?

The four teams in Group B had varying amounts of success.

With the World Cup just weeks away, the September international window was the last chance for teams to fine tune before turning their focus towards Qatar.

For the U.S. men's national team, that meant a pair of friendlies against Japan and Saudi Arabia, two teams that will also be present at the World Cup in November.

But the rest of the USMNT's Group B competition also took the field, with England and Wales in Nations League action while Iran took the field for a pair of high-profile friendlies.

Here's a closer look at how each of Group B's four teams fared:

How did the USMNT do in the September window?

It was a frustrating window for the USMNT, who certainly didn't provide many reasons for optimism during their pair of games.

They were outclassed in a 2-0 loss to Japan that was certainly one of the worst performances of the Gregg Berhalter era. It was a match where few could hold their heads high after.

And against Saudi Arabia, they were slightly better, but ever so slightly. It wasn't enough to win the game, or score a goal for that matter, in their final pre-World Cup audition.

AdvertisementHow did England do in the September window?

It's safe to say that things could be going better with England as Gareth Southgate's side marches towards the World Cup.

England suffered relegation from Nations League A, having failed to win any of their six matches against the likes of Hungary, Germany and Italy.

The Three Lions were stifled by the Italians in a Euro 2020 final rematch in their first match of the window. Italy, who won't be heading to the World Cup this fall after crashing out of World Cup qualifying, finished atop the group thanks to a 1-0 win over England with Giacomo Raspadori scoring the goal.

And, in England's second match, the Harry Maguire show was on full display in a match that proved very entertaining for the neutral. In a match that featured six goals in the second half, England were forced to settle for a 3-3 draw with Germany as Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Harry Kane found the back of the net.

Getty ImagesHow did Wales do in the September window?

Wales' struggles continued as they suffered relegation from Nations League A with just one point in six games.

That point didn't come this window as Gareth Bale and co. sputtered to two losses against fellow World Cup teams.

The first was a 2-1 defeat to Belgium with Kevin De Bruyne and Michy Batshuayi getting on the scoresheet.

And the second defeat came via Charlotte FC star Karol Swiderski, who scored the lone goal in Poland's 1-0 win.

GettyHow did Iran do in the September window?

Perhaps the only Group B team that will feel good about how they performed this month.

Iran started the window with a 1-0 win over Uruguay, even if the South American powerhouses weren't quite at full strength.

And then Iran followed it up with a 1-1 draw with another World Cup-bound team, Senegal, who, just earlier this year, were crowned as African champions.
