HawkeyeSssssmokin’: Dale Steyn took a career-best 7 for 51, his 13th five-for in 37 Tests, to take South Africa to the verge of victory•Associated PressThose 22 yards never mattered less. With one of the most lethal and joyful spells of pace and swing seen in India, a red-hot Dale Steyn took the pitch out of the equation and led South Africa to the verge of what should be close to their finest Test victory. He took out two in the morning with conventional swing, and followed it up after tea with a spell of 3.4-2-3-5 with the old ball. The momentum created was too much to not enforce a follow-on, and Steyn had enough fuel in him to come back and dismiss Virender Sehwag, the only batsman who troubled South Africa in the first innings.Sehwag, whose century was remarkable for its restraint – and one of his best in Tests, will rue his unremarkable first-innings dismissal. He had revived India from 56 for 3 but, when he lobbed a full and wide delivery from Wayne Parnell straight to sweeper-cover, he kick-started a collapse of seven wickets for 41 runs.In the lead-up to the Test, Steyn had famously said, “A 150 or 145km yorker is absolutely no different whether you bowl it here in Nagpur, or Chennai, Johannesburg, Perth.” Turns out even if Steyn is not bowling yorkers, but swinging it accurately at a healthy pace, and if it all comes together in one spell, the pitch matters little. It all started with the sighter from hell from his friend and new-ball partner, Morne Morkel. Gautam Gambhir could consider himself unlucky for getting this delivery first up: back of a length, couldn’t get forward, couldn’t go back, 145ks, angling into him, making him commit, and then leaving him enough to kiss the outside edge. In the second innings, Gambhir would shoulder arms to a similar delivery, and it would jag in and kiss the outside edge of the off stump. Three balls from Morkel, zero runs, out twice. When it’s not your day, it’s probably not your evening either. In between those two wickets there was Steyn. Consistent outswing in his first spell kept Sehwag quiet, and when he got M Vijay on strike it was time for some breakfast. Ball one: full, swinging away, defended by Vijay off the back foot, in front of his body. Ball two: Steyn goes a foot wider, the wrist goes outside of the ball, Vijay shoulders arms, and the inswinger pegs back the prone off stump.Sachin Tendulkar was going to be tougher to get, but got he was. He came forward and off-drove an outswinger for four. End of over. The first ball of the next over was similar, elicited a similar shot, but was about a foot shorter, which meant Tendulkar wasn’t close enough to it, hence the edge.Sehwag was the most difficult to get, and along with the debutant S Badrinath brought India back to even terms. Don’t go by his strike-rate of 78.41. He was as watchful as is possible for him. He ignored short deliveries outside off, mostly scored down the ground, foiled Morkel’s plan of tucking him up by flicking towards midwicket, and even didn’t treat Paul Harris’ spin as the trash he thinks spinners are.Boucher in doubt for remainder of Test

Mark Boucher’s participation in the remainder of the first Test against India is doubtful after he suffered a back sprain on the third day. Boucher did not emerge after tea in Nagpur as AB de Villiers took up responsibilities behind the stumps. Scans taken at a local clinic though, indicated that it was only a strain and Boucher should be available for the second match beginning on February 14 in Kolkata. “The CT scan and MRI scan have given him a clean bill of health. It’s a lower back sprain and he will continue ongoing treatment from the physio,” Michael Owen-Smith, Cricket South Africa’s media officer, said. “I’m not putting a timeframe when he will be back on field but we are confident he will be ready for the Kolkata Test afterwards.”

Immediately after reaching a disciplined century, though, Sehwag played an over that went completely against the character of his knock. Parnell consistently bowled full and wide deliveries with a strong off-side field; two balls went for boundaries and one for five wides, but the last one fetched him the big wicket. No doubt there was a trap in place, and Sehwag couldn’t resist walking in.By tea Badrinath had put behind him an edgy start, and nudged and nurdled his way to a creditable half-century, and something resembling a partnership was forming between him and MS Dhoni. Business, though, was about to pick up after the break.Dhoni padded up to Harris in the first over, and the ball kicked up and took his glove, invitingly hanging, and started the slide towards – barring miracles – a first Test defeat as captain. In the next over, Steyn reversed it in towards Badrinath, who couldn’t keep it down and chipped to short midwicket. The field placement showed South Africa knew what they were doing.Had the stumps owned feet in that spell of play, Steyn’s reverse-swing would have still found them. The other debutant, Wriddhiman Saha, had clearly been asleep when Steyn took Badrinath with an inducker, and almost got a return catch from Harbhajan Singh with that delivery. The first ball Saha faced from Steyn he shouldered arms, but the off stump had no such luxury.Zaheer Khan and Amit Mishra didn’t look interested in standing on the burning deck, kept backing away, and before you could say “collapse”, they were both bowled. Had Harbhajan not got his back leg in the way, he would have lost his stumps too. Immediately followed the definitive image, Graeme Smith motioning towards Harbhajan and Ishant Sharma, who were the last pair, asking them to tell their openers to see Steyn and Morkel in 10 minutes. The aggression followed, the momentum followed, and after Gambhir’s wicket, Morkel gave Sehwag a perfect implementation of his plan. Dug in short, the ball seamed in, beat Sehwag’s bat, and hit him flush in the ribs. The bat went flying away, down went Sehwag in pain, and the edge outside off was not too far off.Vijay and Tendulkar batted better in their second efforts of the day, added 38 runs for the third wicket, and made sure others weren’t taking guard for the second time in one day.

West Ham ‘determined’ to bring Mario Balotelli back to the Premier League

West Ham United are believed to be keen on bringing a new striker to the London Stadium this winter.

And, according to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Mario Balotelli has become the latest man to be linked with a move to The Hammers.

It is being claimed that the Irons are determined to bring the former Manchester City and Liverpool striker back to the Premier League.

The 28-year-old’s contract at Nice is set to expire in the summer and West Ham could look to try and capitalise on a cut-price fee for the Italy international if they were to try and land him in January.

Olympique de Marseille are thought to be interested in the attacker, however, a move back to England’s top-flight is thought to be ‘alluring’ for the player.

The Verdict:

West Ham appear to have been linked with a number of different attackers throughout January and Balotelli is just the latest name to appear.

Although his time in England was not considered to be the best, he has managed to turn things around in France with Nice and has a rather prolific record, hitting 33 goals in his last two seasons – however, he is yet to hit the target in 10 appearances so far this season.

With Marseille thought to be interested, it remains to be seen if West Ham will look to bring the Italy international back to the Premier League.

Blizzard blows home from Bangladesh

On a list of cricket’s most glamorous destinations, Bangladesh doesn’t rank highly but fringe first-class players go where the opportunities arise. For Aiden Blizzard over the past month, that has meant domestic cricket in Dhaka

Brydon Coverdale30-Apr-2010On a list of cricket’s most glamorous destinations, Bangladesh doesn’t rank highly – Andrew Strauss didn’t even bother going there for England’s Test tour this year. But fringe first-class players go where the opportunities arise and for Aiden Blizzard over the past month, that has meant domestic cricket in Dhaka.Even by the standards of journeymen Australian players, it was an unusual move. But Blizzard, who did not have his contract with Victoria renewed this month and has been snapped up by South Australia, relished the chance to learn in unfamiliar conditions, even if there were some problems during his stint with Rajshahi Division.”The pre-match addresses were interesting, because they weren’t in English,” Blizzard told Cricinfo. “I had to use my own game-plan because I didn’t know what our actual game-plan was. They understood that. I missed a training session too – I missed the team bus because I didn’t know it was on.”Despite the language barrier, he finished the National Cricket League Twenty20 competition as the fourth-leading run scorer and helped his team win the final. He was one of a handful of foreign players in the league, along with a couple of South Africans and a few Sri Lankans including Nuwan Zoysa. The slow, low surfaces provided an added challenge for Blizzard, who was recruited after a successful appearance in the Port City Cricket League, which featured Bangladesh teams and was played in Dubai. While the big bucks were flying around at the IPL, Blizzard was taking a chance that was about more than money.”It was more about the opportunity and the experience,” he said. “I really struggled to get many first-class games here in Australia, so if the opportunity came to play in a tournament I was jumping at it.”If the opportunity arises next year, I’ll definitely put my hand up to go and play. It did clash with the IPL, so fingers crossed I can get a crack in the IPL, but if the opportunity does arise again I’ll grab it with both hands. It was a great experience.”A week after battling traffic in Dhaka, Blizzard was back home in Melbourne, preparing to pack up his possessions and move to Adelaide to join the Redbacks. Like the Bangladesh deal, it was a decision based on opportunity: he had managed only one innings in two first-class games during his three seasons as a fully contracted Victoria batsman. There had been a couple of remarkable Twenty20 performances – twice in three years he was Man of the Match in the Big Bash final – but Blizzard wanted to play four-day cricket. When Cricket Victoria didn’t offer him a first-round deal for next summer, he made the choice to join his former team-mate Michael Klinger, who is the newly appointed captain of South Australia.”Michael Klinger has been a close friend of mine since I got to Victoria,” Blizzard said. “I had a good chat to him about moving before the start of last season, not necessarily to South Australia, but just how it was for him. He had a big influence on my decision to go to South Australia.”I’m really looking forward to a fresh start. I was pigeon-holed here as a slogger and South Australia were quick to stress that they didn’t see me as a slogger and they wanted to give me an opportunity to play in all three forms. I’m looking forward to getting that opportunity. Whether it’s at the start of the season or the middle is probably up to me, but it should be a great experience.”It will mean giving up the chance to play in the Champions League Twenty20 this year, where he would have been a key man for Victoria. But at 25, Blizzard knew he had to give himself the best chance of fulfilling his potential. Just like Rajshahi, it was another opportunity too good to pass up. At least this time he’ll understand the team’s game-plan.

Celtic: Ewan Henderson headed for Hibs

Celtic midfielder Ewan Henderson is seemingly set to leave Parkhead for Hibernian during the January transfer window.

The lowdown

Celtic have told Henderson he’s free to go this month, rather than waiting until the summer when his £3,300-per-week contract expires.

Should he join Hibernian, he would link up not only with former Celtic coach Shaun Maloney, but also with his brother Liam.

21-year-old Henderson has made 11 appearances in total for Celtic but only one of those has come this season, and that was in the Europa League dead-rubber against Real Betis.

The latest

Patrick McPartlin of the Edinburgh Evening News reports that ‘progress [is] being made’ in Hibs’ pursuit of Henderson.

Clubs in Italy are also said to be interested, but Hibs are leading the race and are hopeful of wrapping up the move in advance of the Scottish Premiership’s resumption on 17 January.

The verdict

Ange Postecoglou doesn’t look to have much use for Henderson. Prior to the winter break, he included him in his matchday squad on just six occasions.

It’s hard to argue he’s a valued member of the roster, and so it’s probably best for both parties that he moves on.

Henderson did grab his opportunity when it was presented to him, netting what Pat Bonner called an ‘incredible’ goal against Betis, but it’s clearly made little difference to his situation in Glasgow, and the move feels like a win win all-round.

DC owners seek BCCI help to find buyer

The BCCI’s working committee will meet on September 4 to decide on the future of the beleaguered Deccan Chargers IPL franchise

Nagraj Gollapudi02-Sep-2012The BCCI’s working committee will meet on September 4 to decide on the future of the beleaguered Deccan Chargers IPL franchise. The meeting comes after the franchise owners sought the board’s help in finding a new buyer, conceding they could not carry on running the franchise given their financial problems. At the meeting, board president N Srinivasan – who met the franchise owners recently – is likely to explain the BCCI’s future stand. “They have thrown up their hands. They met the BCCI president directly and said that they cannot get their house in order,” a BCCI working committee member, told ESPNcricinfo. On August 14, the IPL governing council had asked the Chargers management to explain why the franchise had been mortgaged to two leading Indian banks when the BCCI held the ownership rights for the franchise. Granting a month to Deccan Chronicle Holdings Limited (DCHL), the board asked the Chargers’ owners to come back with a reassurance that they were in a strong position to continue owning the franchise. T Venkatram Reddy, DCHL chairman, who was present at that meeting was confident the crisis would be resolved soon. But earlier this week, Reddy revealed to that DCHL were in advanced talks with potential buyers and the franchise was in safe hands. However, according to the board official, the issue had become “complicated” with the investors in the franchise having asked the board to get involved.”The lenders do not want the team to die. Nine lenders have written to the board saying they do not mind the team being sold and the board should try and help. The BCCI just wants now to facilitate in finding a buyer. We want to see if there is an amicable sale of the franchise,” the official said.In June DCHL had appointed Religare Capital Markets to look for potential investors who might be interested in buying a part or the entire stake in the franchise. But the board official pointed out any sale could not be a straightforward process. “It is not an easy task because there are some legal proceedings against the Deccan Chargers owners. There are also a number of lenders, number of people who have a stake in the team. One of the lenders has even filed a company winding-up petition,” the official said.Asked if the IPL could be in the danger of being reduced to eight teams, the official said that would be the final step. “We are trying to see and find out an amicable way out. If not, there is no other option. It is a complicated issue and is likely to be discussed during the working committee meeting,” he said. However not all board members are impressed at the sudden “soft approach” being thought about by the BCCI top brass. “Less than a month ago we had stated and issued a notice to the Deccan Chargers owners that in case they would not settle their dispute the board would auction for a new team. Now apparently we have to take a softer route. How are we concerned? The lenders are knocking at the BCCI doors because they are in trouble,” a working committee member said.

Hauritz given chance to impress in T20s

Nathan Hauritz has been given the chance to cement his spot before the World Twenty20

Cricinfo staff18-Feb-2010Nathan Hauritz has been given the chance to cement his spot before the World Twenty20 after being added to Australia’s 15-man squad for the two games in New Zealand next week. Hauritz has become the No. 1 slow bowler in Tests and ODIs but has not been picked for any of the short-form encounters at home. The selectors were keen to see how the legspinner Steven Smith would perform against Pakistan and Hauritz has been rested from the contests against West Indies on Sunday and Tuesday. “With the important role spin plays in Twenty20 cricket, Nathan deserves the chance to try and establish himself in Australia’s Twenty20 side ahead of the World Twenty20,” Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, said. While Hauritz can fine-tune for the tournament in the West Indies in April and May, Michael Hussey’s international Twenty20 career in the format appears over after he was left out. His brother David is in the squad along with Cameron White, Travis Birt and Smith, who doubles as a hard-hitting batsman and could be competing with Hauritz for the spinner’s role at the World Twenty20.”I’ve got the next two Twenty20s coming up against West Indies and the two Twenty20s in New Zealand,” Smith said. “I’m going to be looking to put the best performances up possible and if I get a chance to be part of the World Twenty20 tournament that would be outstanding.”The one-day side will play five games next month before the two-Test series and the selectors have been loyal to the squad that has been so successful over the past 10 months. Real Madrid rule the world again! Winners, losers & ratings as Vinicius Junior, Fede Valverde & Karim Benzema strike in Club World Cup final

Vinicius Junior and Fede Valverde scored two goals apiece to lead Real Madrid to a 5-3 win over Al-Hilal in the Club World Cup final on Saturday.

The celebrations weren't over-the-top after the final whistle blew. Real Madrid, having put away Al-Hilal in a high-scoring Club World Cup final, didn't storm the pitch. Instead, it was the standard slew of high-fives and hugs, a reaction more associated with a win over Elche on a rainy midweek in February than the European crown they captured last May.

Still, there was reason for some smiles. Madrid turned in one of their best attacking performances of the season, putting five past Al-Hilal to win their fifth Club World Cup.

Champions of the world have a nice ring to it.

Vinicius Junior opened the scoring early, capping off some neat interplay with a side footed finish to give Madrid a 1-0 lead. Fede Valverde added a second five minutes later, with Abdullah Al-Mayouf fumbling his relatively tame strike.

Al-Hilal pulled one back after Moussa Marega coasted through the Madrid defence and slipped the ball past Andriy Lunin. There were suggestions that another might come, but Real did just enough to retain a 2-1 lead at half-time.

Karim Benzema quelled any comeback fears with a tap-in 15 minutes after the break. Valverde made it four shortly after, latching on Dani Carvajal's through ball and chipping the keeper to put Madrid out of reach. Al-Hilal stuck around, though, trading goals in a high scoring affair that somehow ended 5-3, with just enough jeopardy to make things interesting.

Much like Chelsea at this tournament a year ago, this was a chance for Real Madrid to hold silverware during a season in which achievements might be in short supply.

Even if the Club World Cup can feel like a dressed-up friendly, grabbing the 100th official trophy in club history was an accomplishment worth savouring.

Getty ImagesThe Winners

Federico Valverde:

His first goal might have been fortunate – the product of a horrible blunder by the keeper – but Valverde badly needed to see the ball hit the net. The midfielder was evolving into a reliable goalscorer before the World Cup, but dropped off immensely after his time in Qatar. But there were echoes of his old self on Saturday evening. Valverde was elegant on the ball and immensely effective in the final third, bagging a brace while being heavily involved in Madrid's suddenly fluid build up play. Yes, the opposition wasn't of the highest quality, but it might be exactly what Valverde needed.

Vinicius Junior:

There was a kind of joy to Vinicius' game on Saturday that hasn't been seen for some time. The winger has been battered with on field mistreatment and rancid racial abuse over the last six weeks. And, not unreasonably, it appeared to be getting to him. But in Morocco, away from the controversy of La Liga, the Brazilian has thrived. He bagged a brace in the final, his third goal of the Club World Cup. There was a real ease to his finishing too, the comfort of a player entirely relaxed and confident in his abilities. He was a delight to watch.

The Club World Cup:

Yes, major clubs in the middle of their league campaigns really don't need to jet off to play a far inferior team. But what a game this was. Madrid probably should have scored five, and really shouldn't have conceded three. But, more than anything, that added to the fun. Madrid never really looked in danger of losing the contest; each goal was a product of individual errors rather than Al-Hilal brilliance. Still, Los Blancos were just careless enough to make it all a bit fun. As far as needless games go, this was a fantastic one to watch.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe Losers

Antonio Rudiger:

He wasn't the only Real Madrid player to turn in a poor defensive performance, but Rudiger's wayward play directly contributed to two of Al-Hilal's goals. He was caught out of position on the first, and gave the ball away in the run-up to another. With Militao out and David Alaba working his way back to full fitness, Rudiger is the only fit first-choice centre-back. And his poor spell is something of a concern as Madrid enters a period of must-win contests.

Luka Modric:

Was this Modric's last final in a Madrid shirt? The Croatian hasn't looked the same player since the World Cup, with his 37-year-old legs finally showing signs of slowing down. He was, predictably, handed the start against Al-Hilal, as Ancelotti fielded his strongest XI. But he was the weakest of three Madrid midfielders, and with Dani Ceballos lifting the level after he came on, it's easy to wonder how much longer Modric might be a surefire starter.

Getty ImagesReal Madrid Ratings: Defence

Andriy Lunin (5/10):

Conceded three without doing loads wrong. Probably has more grievances with his back four than individual showing. A wayward pass or two didn't help, though.

Dani Carvajal (6/10):

Seems to have benefitted from some time off, and turned in a lively performance.

Antonio Rudiger (5/10):

Shaky, which isn't very good. Will need to improve in the coming weeks.

David Alaba (6/10):

Given problems by the strength of Marega, and should have done better on the forward's goal. Looked more comfortable at left-back.

Eduardo Camavinga (7/10):

Good at left-back, even better in central-midfield. A delightful player to watch who will surely only get better. Bellingham who?

Luka Modric (6/10):

Uncharacteristically leggy from the Croatian, who is really starting to show his age. This could be his last final in a Madrid shirt.

Aurelien Tchoaumeni (6/10):

Fantastic at winning the ball, not as good once he'd actually won it. Seemed to get himself banged up – Ancelotti will hope it's not serious.

Toni Kroos (7/10):

Classy, measured, technically sound. A signature Kroos performance, who loves these slower-paced games these days.
